Job Title: Biologist
Pay Range: $32,000‐$34,000 plus benefits

Duration: Permanent, beginning spring 2016

Project Location: based in Ashland, OR; job duties throughout southern OR / northern CA

Position Description: Klamath Bird Observatory (www.KlamathBird.org) seeks to fill a Biologist
position with primary responsibilities to support ongoing avian long‐term monitoring and applied
ecology studies to advance bird conservation. The Biologist will have a primary role in one to several projects and a support role in other research studies. Implementation of field studies is a primary responsibility; hiring, training, and supervising field crews and/or interns, and managing field logistics. This includes development and coordination of project partners, data management, and analysis and reporting of project data. Field studies may include multiple avian survey methodologies much as point count, area search, spot‐mapping, nest searching, mist‐netting and bird banding, and species specific survey protocols.


Job Duties (to include, but not limited to):
• Assists in the development, design, and review of research studies
• Coordinates and manages field studies, including scheduling, data collection, data entry, data
management, and project reporting
• Recruits and hires field technicians and/or interns
• Provides for daily supervision, training, support, and coordination of field technicians and/or
interns
• Performs field work as needed and associated data entry
• Coordinates and maintains field station housing for field crews and/or interns
• Manages and maintains vehicles, equipment, and supplies
• Performs data analysis and writes project reports
• Contributes project specific goals and objectives to annual planning
• Develops and retains project specific partners
• Presents research findings at scientific conferences
• Participates in local and regional professional networks as needed
• Develops project budget and support for project accounting
• Participates in community outreach activities
• Markets science projects to partners and community


Basic Qualifications
The Biologist must have a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s
degree in the Natural Sciences and a minimum of two years of field experience and one year of
project management (or a Master’s degree). The applicant should have experience in field
studies, preferably with avian monitoring techniques, and willingness to work as a team member
for a growing non‐profit organization. They must be in good physical condition and be able to
work in the field hiking over rough terrain in inclement weather conditions. Additionally, this
position requires willingness to travel and work remotely on a regular basis for short durations.


Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Experience with avian monitoring methodologies and familiarity with research design
• Knowledge of avian natural history and ecology
• Experience implementing field studies, specifically avian studies
• Experience with intern management and supervision of field crews
• Ability to develop, implement, track, and manage a project budget
• Experience with fundamental statistics and analysis of avian data
• Good oral and written communication skills, including technical science writing
• Ability to represent KBO to partners and the public
• Experience with public speaking
• Experience with data management and analysis programs (Access/Excel/R/PCord or Primer)
• Experience with ArcGIS
• Good attention to detail and ability to multi‐task in a busy work environment
• Ability to work with others, both internally and externally
• Ability to collect meticulous data
• Ability and positive attitude to work long days in the field beginning before sunrise
• Ability and positive attitude to hike in rough and steep terrain in inclement weather, in areas with
poison oak, ticks, biting and stinging insects, rattlesnakes, black bears, and cougars
• Willingness to live in a remote area and/or camp on a regular basis
• Ability to drive on unmarked narrow forest roads
• Experience with fleet management and equipment maintenance
Must provide and maintain reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and meet minimum
driving record and insurance requirements
