FIELD TECHNICIANS (2 POSITIONS)

Position will be located in the areas of Newton and Salem, Illinois. Housing is provided in Salem, IL.
The Illinois Natural History Survey, a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois is seeking applicants for Telemetry Field Technicians. Applicants will assist in the translocation of Greater Prairie-chickens from Kansas to Illinois. Some travel out of Illinois will be required. Duties include assisting with trapping, banding and radio tagging of birds in Kansas during March and April and radio tracking translocated birds once released in Illinois. Additional duties include attending leks before sunrise and re-sighting banded birds, driving throughout the area searching for radio-tagged birds, locating and monitoring nests and broods, vegetation surveys, and entering and managing data.
Preferred duration: March 1, 2017 – June 30, 2017
Rate of pay: $12.00 to $15.00 per hour commensurate with experience and skills.
B.S. or related degree required. Minimum qualifications include demonstrable radio telemetry skills using standard VHF telemetry, and experience re-sighting color-marked birds. Must be able to determine colors visually. A good candidate will also have experience using GPS, the ability to follow a standardized protocol, previous experience working in grasslands, and the ability to work well, both independently, and with others. Experience handling and banding birds, preferably grouse-like birds, is preferred but not required. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be in good physical condition, be able to work for extended periods, and be enthusiastic about early mornings and a rigorous field season. Must be willing and able to work in extreme weather conditions including heat and humidity.
