A PhD student position in the area of evolutionary genetics, with a focus on the evolution of sexual dimorphism, is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, the Evolutionary Biology program, Uppsala University.

Project description: The PhD candidate will work on the project “Evolution of sexual dimorphism in the face of genetic constraints” within the group of Assistant Professor Elina Immonen, at the Department of Ecology and Genetics.
The research of Dr. Immonen focuses on studying sex-specific selection and the genetics of sexual dimorphism, using experimental, genetic and genomic techniques. The PhD project will be carried out in collaboration with Professor Hans Ellegren (second supervisor to the PhD candidate). Professor Ellegren’s group studies many key questions in evolutionary biology, including the evolution of genetic diversity, using genomic and bioinformatic approaches (http://www.ieg.uu.se/evolutionary-biology/ellegren/).
Duties: The PhD candidate will investigate fitness consequences and the genetic architecture of genetic correlations between the sexes, using artificial selection, phenotypic assaying, and modern RNA and DNA sequencing technologies. The doctoral student is expected to learn to conduct her/his own research projects, to write articles and the dissertation, and take courses relevant to the research program.
Qualifications required: To be eligible for a PhD-student position the applicant must hold a master degree (or equivalent) in evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, ecology, behavioral ecology, or other relevant field. We are looking for a highly motivated student, and in addition to scientific skills within the subject area, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills such as communication and collaboration skills, ability to work independently, scientific maturity and creativity. The candidate must be fluent in both spoken and written English.
Qualifications desired: Experience in conducting laboratory experiments in insects, molecular laboratory and bioinformatics skills, and in-depth knowledge in sexual selection and -conflict theories are desirable.
Position: The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The position can be combined with teaching or other duties at the department (maximum 20%), which prolongs the employment with the corresponding time. The salary will be set according to local agreements.
