Associate professor in biological diversity (Norway)

The NTNU University Museum, Department of Natural History seeks a highly motivated entomologist to perform biosystematic research in one or more of the large insect orders, preferably Lepidoptera, Coleoptera or Hymenoptera, and to be curator of parts of our terrestrial invertebrate collection. The successful candidate will be linked to the Systematics and Evolution research group and strengthen the Department’s research in biological systematics according to the museum's strategic plan.



The successful candidate will have work tasks at the NTNU University Museum, within the areas of: 1) research, 2) curation of scientific collections, 3) public outreach, 4) teaching at bachelor, master and PhD level, including supervising MSc- and PhD-students, and 5) administration and project management.


The Department of Natural History offers a diverse and progressive research environment focused on projects that aim to describe and analyse biological diversity in space and time, including factors leading to speciation and population fluctuations.



The successful candidate will have a PhD in biology in the field of systematics and taxonomy, or a related field in evolutionary biology or biodiversity, and must have the following qualifications:
Knowledge of species diversity in one or more of the major insect orders preferably Lepidoptera, Coleoptera or Hymenoptera, especially of the fauna of northern Europe.
Experience of working with Natural history collections.
Experience with use of molecular data in biosystematic research projects.
Experience in obtaining externally funded research projects.

It is desirable that the candidate has the following qualifications:
Experience with project acquisition and management.
Experience with taxonomic research.
Experience with state of the art analytical tools in systematics and evolutionary biology.
Experience in public outreach.
Experience as supervisor of graduate students and in teaching university level courses.
Proficiency in a Scandinavian language (as frequent contact with the public is expected).

The Department seeks to build strong collaboration between the Systematics and Evolution and Conservation Biology research groups. It is therefore an advantage if the applicant has experience of integrating systematics with ecological research, through for example, network ecology, biogeography or biodiversity assessments.


The successful candidate should have good cooperative skills, be motivated, creative, resourceful and able to deliver. Applicants will be evaluated based on scientific publications, documented experience, references, CV, interview and trial lecture.



Information about the working environment

The NTNU University Museum, Department of Natural History currently has 16 faculty positions, six temporary research positions, 10 PhD students and 12 technical and administrative positions. The department’s research activity is facilitated through two research groups: the Systematics and Evolution Group and the Conservation Biology Group. The Department cooperates formally with the NTNU Department of Biology and is responsible for teaching biosystematics (systematics, taxonomy, biogeography, floristics, faunistics) at the university.



The NTNU University Museum is located in historic Trondheim, Norway’s third most populous municipality. Salaries

Associate professor, code 1011 is paid a gross salary from 490.500 to 722.000 NOK annually (before tax), depending on qualifications. Two percent of gross salary is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.



Other information

Academic staff employed without having prior formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching, and who are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.



New members of the academic staff who do not already master a Scandinavian language are within three years expected to achieve proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. This proficiency should correspond to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Applied Linguistics.

The associate professor should adhere to regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at NTNU.

Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.
