PhD position in coastal dynamics, Monash University, Australia

G'day, we are seeking a talented applicant for a fully funded PhD position in coastal dynamics funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Award. The project is a collaboration between Monash University, The University of Cambridge (UK) and Birkbeck University, London. The student will be based at Monash University (School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment) in Melbourne, Australia, but will require some travel to the UK.

The project focusses on the response of vegetated foreshores to sea level rise. The low elevation coastal zone contains 13% of the Australian population and is subject to intensive agriculture and urbanisation. Accelerating sea level rise is thus a major societal concern and its impacts on shorelines must be accurately determined. This Australian-UK collaboration aims to improve Australia?s capacity to predict changing shoreline position with sea level rise, better understand the role of vegetation in foreshore stabilisation and identify under what conditions the shoreline might suddenly shift landwards.

The successful applicant will apply field based wave and sedimentation measurements with remote sensing (drone and satellite) data within a numerical modelling framework to determine the forcings affecting shoreline retreat with sea level rise in Australia, in order to improve predictive capacity.

The candidate should hold, or expect to shortly obtain, at least an Honours 1 degree or equivalent in physical geography, oceanography, environmental science or other relevant disciplines.

Applications are now open. If you wish to be considered for the position, the application deadline is 12 noon on Thursday 21 December 2017, with interviews expected to be held mid-January.

Please send a cover letter detailing your motivation and research experience along with a CV to Dr Ruth Reef, ruth.reef@monash.edu Feel free to contact me for further information.

The funded position is open to high achieving domestic and international students and will provide a stipend and a living allowance according to the Monash University fee and scholarship schedule.
