Research Scientist position at the ILL

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international fundamental research institute funded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Agreements on scientific collaboration have also been signed with Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Russia, Spain and Switzerland. The Institute operates the most powerful source of neutrons in the world, a 58MW reactor, which was completely refurbished in 1995. The reactor forms the basis for a programme of research covering a wide variety of fields, supplying neutrons to a broad range of instruments which are available to scientists from the member countries.

ILL currently has an opening for a Research Scientist in its Three-Axis Spectrometer (TAS) Group. The post represents an excellent opportunity for a young postdoctoral scientist to develop his/her expertise, broaden his/her experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more experienced scientists who are able to obtain a secondment period from their home institute will also be considered.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated scientist with a PhD in solid-state physics or chemistry and an interest in instrumentation and computing. Some experience of neutron scattering, preferably in the field of the study of collective excitations in crystals, would be appreciated. In addition to carrying out his/her own research programme, he/she will take charge, in collaboration with the first instrument responsible, of the operation and development of the three-axis spectrometer IN14, which is installed on a cold neutron beam. His/her duties will also include promoting scientific partnerships in his/her field of research and acting on a regular basis as "local contact" for outside users carrying out experiments at the ILL, in particular on the various instruments in the TAS group.

The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract, the duration of which will under no circumstances exceed five (5) years. In addition to a competitive salary, certain benefits (reimbursement of removal expenses, adaptation allowance, etc.) may be offered. Further information can be obtained by contacting:Dr J. Kulda, tel. +33 (0)4 76 20 72 56 ; e-mail : kulda at ill.frDr A. Stunault, tel. +33 (0)4 76 20 76 57 ; e-mail : stunault at ill.fror via the internet: http://www.ill.fr/tas. Applications with curriculum vitae, a list of publications and the names of two academic referees should be sent, quoting reference 04/20, no later than 15.06.2004 to: Dr. J. Kulda, Head of TAS group INSTITUT LAUE-LANGEVIN
