Job Description
The Junior Wetland Ecologist will play a key role in tasks related to wetland classification, impact assessments, mitigation plans, restoration monitoring, and more.
Primary responsibilities:
- Assist with wetland field and desktop delineations, classifications, and assessments.
- Use tools like ABWRET-A (fieldwork) and ABWRET-D (desktop assessments).
- Contribute to data analysis, quality control, and GIS mapping.
- Participate in various reports and monitoring activities (e.g., wildlife, water quality, soils).
- Work collaboratively with team members while upholding WEST's core values.
Fieldwork conditions:
- 75% fieldwork and 25% office work, depending on the season.
- Long workdays (8-12 hours) in extreme weather conditions and remote terrains.
- Work in areas with limited or no cellphone signal, using satellite or radio communication.
Requirements
- Legal authorization to work in Canada (citizenship, permanent residency, or valid visa).
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in biological sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of relevant experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to rent vehicles.
- Expertise in wetland classification in boreal, prairie, and parkland ecosystems.
- Proficiency in GIS tools such as Esri ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or Google Earth.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
- Eligibility or registration as a P. Biol. or BIT.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with wildlife surveys, water quality monitoring, or soil assessments.
- Interest in working with wildlife and in diverse sectors.
