Location: Cambridge, UK

Organization: University of Cambridge, Department of Veterinary Medicine

Contract Type: Postdoctoral Research Associate, fixed-term 18 months (BBSRC-funded)

Main Description:
This BBSRC-funded postdoctoral position investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying antiviral immunity and immune regulation in bats. The project focuses on the functional characterisation of key innate immune genes — including NLRP3, MyD88, and STING — using cell systems and molecular techniques. The aim is to understand how bats tolerate viral infections that are lethal in other mammals, with implications for both evolutionary biology and disease ecology.

Requirements:
  • PhD (or close to completion) in cell biology, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, or a related discipline
  • Experience in cell culture and molecular cloning (essential)
  • Understanding of innate immunity (advantageous)
  • Experience in evolutionary bioinformatics (advantageous)
  • Experience in lentiviral transduction (advantageous)
  • Experience in CRISPR-mediated genome modification (advantageous)
  • Experience in functional immune assays (advantageous)
Benefits/Conditions:
Salary: £37,694–£46,049 per annum

How to Apply:
Submit a completed CHRIS/6 form, CV, covering letter, and contact details for two referees through the University of Cambridge online recruitment system. Quote reference PP50380. For informal enquiries, contact Julie Ingham at ji217@cam.ac.uk.

Deadline: 29 July 2026, 09:00 (BST)
