Contract Type: PhD (3.5 years, fully funded)
Main Description: A 3.5-year fully funded PhD position investigating the mechanisms driving water use by trees in tree-based agricultural systems (agroforestry) across contrasting environmental contexts. The research combines field measurements (sap flow, soil water, stable isotopes) with process-based modelling to understand tree-water interactions and predict the impacts on water availability.
Requirements:
- Good degree in a relevant subject (plant-water relations, ecology, environmental science, hydrology, agricultural systems or related discipline)
- Experience in experimental and field-based research
- Experience in quantitative analysis and data interpretation using R
- Willingness to undertake fieldwork in contrasting environmental conditions
- Environmental sensor deployment
- Stable isotope analysis
- GIS or remote sensing
- Process-based environmental modelling
Benefits/Conditions:
- Fully funded PhD position (3.5 years)
- Training in field ecology, sensor deployment, stable isotope analysis, statistical modelling, and remote sensing
- Opportunities to contribute to international fieldwork across multiple countries
- Embedded within an international research programme
