Position Summary

The Discovery Passage Aquarium offers educational and interpretive programs for residents, schools
and visitors highlighting the fascinating marine life of the Discovery Passage and surrounding waters.
Are you outgoing, upbeat, and full of curiosity? A creative and enthusiastic communicator, with a
strong interest in the marine environment, natural history and conservation? If so, you might like to
join us as an interpreter/aquarist this summer.
Hours and Location of Work
Between 35-40 hours/week including weekends and some evenings. Depending on funding and
availability, the positions will start in May and end on Labour Day. Some positions may be available
for high school students starting in July. Rate of pay is $17.00 per hour, depending on experience.
The Discovery Passage Aquarium is located in Campbell River, BC
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Aquarium Interpreter will focus on the upkeep of aquarium exhibits, animal
husbandry, and visitor relations. This will include the following tasks:
● Deliver one-on-one and group interpretive education programs and tours while maintaining
guest satisfaction through interactive and enthusiastic programming for all ages
● Assist in maintaining exhibits with live animals and provide high quality animal husbandry
● Deliver interpretive programs for school groups and daily public events
● Sales and cashiering
● Assist in the supervision of volunteers and provide a rewarding learning experience
● Communicate animal handling protocols to volunteers and guests
● Maintain appearance of building, interpretive props and materials
● Provide a safe and positive work environment
● Prepare and distribute feed for the specimens
● Adjust water flows and air supply
● Record water quality measurements
● Other duties as required

Qualifications

● Post-secondary education in a field of biological sciences, marine biology, education, tourism
or related field is preferred
● Level 1 First Aid with CPR-C is an asset
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Candidates must be able to demonstrate:
● Experience and competence in computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and email
● Knowledge of local marine biodiversity, species, life history and habitats
● Excellent interpersonal communications, presentation and public speaking skills
● Experience developing and/or delivering educational programs to youth of all ages an asset
● Professional and friendly demeanor with demonstrated experience as a team member
● Strong time management and organizational skills
● Ability to be creative and flexible with problem-solving skills
● Familiarity with social media promotional opportunities, including web blogs
● Strong language skills in English are required. A second language is an asset.
● Experience in customer service, tourism, or retail sales is an asset
● Experience in animal handling and interpretation is an asset
● Basic mechanical skills are an asset
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:
● Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
● Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has
been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the
employment*
● Must Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally
entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and
regulations.
● Complete a criminal record check for Discovery Passage Aquarium
● Be able to lift up to 50lbs (Buckets, merchandise, equipment, etc.).
