Quantifying marine biodiversity through movements and feeding: Assessing coastal marine
ecosystem dynamics near estuary mouths

Responsibilities: A PhD student will participate in a study funded by the National
Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOAA, BOEM, and ONR) on the interactions between a
model coastal consumer (Atlantic cod) and measures of marine biodiversity. Assessing marine
biodiversity is integral to conservation and management, and techniques are advancing to
measure biological processes (e.g., environmental DNA [eDNA], passive acoustics, active
acoustics). But it remains unclear how biodiversity measurements across techniques vary with
scale through space and time, and at which scales measurements are relevant to local species.
The PhD student (advised by Dr. Nathan Furey) will focus on the movements and diet of Atlantic
cod in the coastal waters off New Hampshire and the Isles of Shoals as well as Casco Bay off
Portland, Maine, through acoustic telemetry and stomach content collection and
metabarcoding. The student will integrate Atlantic cod movements and feeding with
information on local marine biodiversity, through one or more of the following techniques,
dependent upon interest: eDNA, passive acoustics, and active acoustics. The student will have
opportunities to collaborate with, or potentially be co-advised, by co-PIs and collaborators (Drs.
Alison Watts, Elizabeth Craig, Graham Sherwood, and Jennifer Miksis-Olds, among others). The
student will also work closely with another PhD student conducting parallel studies through the
perspective of seabirds (already in progress).
Qualifications: We are committed to valuing diverse identities, experiences, and skills. M.S. or
extensive B.S./B.A. experience in biology, fisheries, ecology, oceanography, statistics, or other
relevant discipline required. Additional quantitative skills, experience working on small vessels
and in inclement conditions, and experience with fish biology and behavior, or telemetry or diet
studies are a plus. Please note in your cover letter your interest in eDNA, passive acoustics,
and/or active acoustics and any relevant experience. If interested in passive acoustics data,
please note if you have coursework in partial differential equations and your willingness to take
such courses. A willingness to learn and attention to detail and research ethics are necessities.
Good communication skills are essential as this project will be collaborative with multiple
partners including an exciting team of researchers and resource practitioners.
Salary: Minimum $30,000 per year (4 years, including summers) will be paid through Research
Assistantship and ~two semesters of Teaching Assistantship. Tuition is covered by the project,
and the graduate student will have access to UNH student healthcare.

PhD scholarship within fish ecology and alpine aquatic community ecology


About the position

Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), has a vacant 3-year PhD position related to salmonid species in alpine lakes (Canada).

The main objectives of this PhD project: 1) understanding and quantifying baseline status of these ecosystems and 2) identifying the processes that are the most susceptible to alter this baseline in response to global climate change. In order to meet these objectives, we will sample the food-web of alpine lakes during the winter and summer, during three years in the Chic-Chocs mountains of Quebec, Canada. This project will adopt an approach at the nexus of biogeochemistry and community ecology to better describe and understand these unique ecosystems, with an emphasis on three salmonid species (e.i., Arctic charr, brook charr and lake trout). Winter conditions are poorly understood factors that may determine summertime characteristics, resulting in cascading effects between seasons and food webs (e.g., phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish).


The candidate will have access to a wide range of data – habitat use and diet (isotopes and fatty acids and acoustic telemetry data) and growth (juvenile and adult growth rate based on back-calculated otoliths), and their expressions at different scales of intra- and interspecific competition and through different environmental conditions (seasons and years).

The research conducted in this position will be closely linked to a key task of the recently established knowledge hub from the Canadian Mountain Network (https://www.canadianmountainnetwork.ca/fr/research/knowledge-hubs/developing-knowledge-of-aquatic-realities-in-chic-choc-mountains), where NMBU is the co-leader of this network.

Main tasks
To study cascading effects of winter conditions on fish population dynamics and through the food-webs: top-down, bottom-up, and feedback loops
Conduct field work in alpine lakes in the Chic-Chocs (Canada).
Use a wide range of data, from telemetry (e.g., habitat use) growth, isotopes and fatty acids of three salmonid species, to food-web components.
Collaborate closely with other students and researchers in the fields of fish ecology, limnology, geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and genomics.

The specific tasks will be adjusted to the candidate’s interest and background.

The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.


Competence


The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master's degree level. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English. Summary of Position

The Senior Research Technician and Lab Manager work within the Fish and Movement Ecology (FME) Lab, led by Dr. Nathan Furey. This position will provide field and logistical support across lab projects, including coastal, estuarine, and freshwater ecology projects. Field support includes driving small vessels and using a variety of fisheries gear types and collecting environmental samples and data. The lab manager will also assist in lab logistics, including the use of the university purchasing system, the development of the written field and lab protocols, assisting in permit applications, and written reporting. The individual will work closely with all members of the FME Lab and their collaborators, including faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers.


This position will support all of the FME Lab’s activities, but will focus on three projects: 1) marine biodiversity monitoring in coastal NH and ME waters, focusing on Atlantic cod and common terns, 2) movements and feeding of Arctic charr in Maine, and 3) interannual survival of rainbow smelt in Great Bay, New Hampshire. The position will require occasional and seasonal travel to field sites and collaborating institutes.

This position is within a generous funding of Expro project of Czech Science Foundation to Martin Reichard on reproductive parasitism in fish. It uses two understudied fish brood parasitic systems: bitterling fishes (Acheilognathidae) and their mussel hosts, and cuckoo catfish (Synodontis multipunctatus) and their cichlid hosts from Lake Tanganyika.

The project aims at identifying the conditions for the origin and evolution of host specificity in brood parasites. Field and lab studies are combined with barcoding, population genetics and phylogenetics.

Selected candidate will work along with two other postdoctoral researchers. There is flexibility in the specific focus within the broad terms of the project, although we would particularly welcome a candidate with expertise in:
  1. fish morphology (dentition, gill rakers, osteology) or
  2. comparative phylogenetic biology.

A fully funded post-doctoral scholar position for 2 years will be available after the 1st of June at Prof. Axel Meyer lab to work on DFG funded work related to species delimitation in sympatric and allopatric populations of live-bearing fishes. The project aims at integrating whole-genome resequencing data and phenotypic data to conduct species delimitations applying coalescent-based integrative taxonomic approaches and to validate these by contrasting their outcome to empirically determined degree of reproductive isolation among species pairs. We seek applicants with a background in some of the following areas: evolutionary biology, taxonomy, phylogenetics and field research. We encourage applicants with bioinformatic skills.

The Meyer Lab at the Department of Biology at University of Konstanz, is interested in the origins of adaptations, speciation, and phylogenomics of fishes, in particular the cichlid fish adaptive radiations from Nicaragua and Africa. A total of three research groups two of which are headed by Junior Group Leaders make up the evolutionary biology group (15 members total in the lab).

The Department of Aquaculture and Fish Biology, Hólar University, Iceland, is looking for an intern student (from bachelor to masters, or even DUT/BTS, ...) for a project about brain gene expression related to cognitive abilities in the Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus).

Context of the study:
Comparative studies might give an insight on how cognition has evolved across taxa. The evolution of spatial cognition is of a particular interest because all animals depend on navigational skills to find food or mates, retrieve the nest and escape predators. Hence, spatial cognitive abilities have an impact on individuals’ fitness and are consequently subject to natural selection. In that sense, spatial cognitive abilities in each population should be locally adapted to its particular ecological conditions. The Icelandic Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus, AC) is found as several sympatric morphs thriving in very different types of habitats, from anadromous to benthic and pelagic lake-resident morphs. We hypothesize cognitive abilities and behavior to be shaped according to both evolutionary history and current ecological factors, implying differential expression patterns of genes linked with spatial cognition and neurogenesis between populations. The project is led by Pr. David Benhaïm (lead PI, Hólar Univ.) in collaboration across Hólar Univ. (Pr. Bjarni K. Kristjánsson, Dr. Camille Leblanc), University of Caen, France (Dr. Christelle Jozet), IFREMER, France (Dr. Marie-Laure Bégout), INRA, France (Dr. Xavier Cousin) and University of Iceland (Pr. Zophonías Jónsson).

Student project:
The student will specifically identify molecular clues underpinning behavioral and cognitive ability differences between populations, morphs and environments. This will be done by monitoring genes expression patterns in several brain structures of offspring from three wild AC morphs raised under complex vs. plain conditions, that underwent personality and spatial learning tests. To do so, the student will
perform:
  • RNA extractions from several brain regions
  • Reverse transcription
  • qPCR with specially developed PCR primers for a set of genes involved in neurogenesis, neural plasticity and stress regulation
  • DNA extraction, PCR & gel electrophoreses to genetically sex the test individuals.
  • If interested, the student will also analyze and interpret the data obtained.
This work will be carried out in Reykjavík at the University of Iceland. The student will be working in close collaboration with a PhD student, Marion Dellinger.

Requirements:
The candidates must be enrolled in a degree in the fields of biotechnology or genetics, or relevant equivalent fields. Meticulousness, experience in laboratory manipulation and a solid sense of organization are required. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in pluridisciplinary research with an emphasis on neurosciences and is willing to improve lab bench skills. S/he enjoys working in a dynamic group but should be able to work independently as well. Statistical skills will be a plus. Working language will be English.

Una posición de técnico y tres de postdoc en un nuevo proyecto de conservación centrado en peces 🐟

A technician position in fish ecology and conservation and three postdoc positions in fish ecology, niche modelling and conservation are available (each 2-3 years) in the Aquatic Ecology & Evolution group of Ole Seehausen at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

With the Wyss Academy for Nature, we are starting an ambitious freshwater conservation biology project with a focus on fish. Working initially at the scale of the largest Swiss catchment, the Aare, home to more than 60 different species of fish, we want to go all the way from field ecology, niche modelling and projections of range shifts under climate change to identifying priority areas for biodiversity conservation, and designing measures to mitigate predicted and recover past losses. As implementation partner, the Swiss Fisheries Competence Center will develop applications of such measures initially in a test region. The project is supported by the Wyss Academy for Nature at the University of Bern in partnership with the Canton of Bern and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN/Bafu). If successful, the project may continue for up to eight years, with the goals of upscaling projections to other catchments of Switzerland and a fully fledged mitigation program.

The Aare catchment contains several of the large perialpine lakes, each of which has endemic species of coldwater fish, several of which have already gone extinct. It also has many mountain rivers with environmental gradients stretching from the arctic-alpine to the temperate climate zone, including one of the most pristine braided rivers left on the North face of the Alps. We have an extensive data set on distribution records for most species of fish in Switzerland and many environmental variables. Our goal is to complement this data with additional dense sampling of fish and environmental variables across the entire Aare catchment. Our recent work has uncovered old cryptic species as well as postglacial ecological species within the broad category of taxonomic “species” currently in use in management. Whenever possible we will do niche modelling and change projections at the level of these evolutionary significant units (ESUs). We will work with and add to our large collection of voucher specimens and tissue samples covering many populations of most Swiss fish species. We will develop data rich niche models for all species/ESUs of fish and also for some key aquatic invertebrates. We will combine the niche models with locally resolved climate and land-use change projections to predict habitat gains and losses and identify hotspots of expected biodiversity loss. We will use the results to develop mitigation strategies, components of which will be explored initially in a test region, in close collaboration with the Swiss Fisheries Competence Centre, the Wyss Academy for Nature, the Canton Bern office for the environment (LANAT) and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

We are hiring a technician to support a team of postdoctoral scientists. You are in charge of the sampling. This includes electrofishing and snorkelling in streams, netfishing, diving and ROV operations in lakes, processing of samples and genetic lab work (barcoding and RAD sequencing). You are also in charge of obtaining sampling permits. Employment as technician/senior technician depending on experience.
Qualifications: MSc or PhD in fish biology with relevant field experience and strong technical skills. Social skills and proficiency in German/Swiss-German are required for interactions with fisheries administrations and stakeholders.

We are hiring 3 Postdocs with 3 different profiles:
  1. Fish ecologist, evolutionary or conservation biologist to co-lead the field work with emphasis on sampling, identification, integrative taxonomy, and ecology of fish. Employment at Postdoc/senior Postdoc level depending on experience. Qualifications: PhD in ecology/taxonomy/systematics with excellent knowledge of fish, fieldwork, population genetics, phylogenetics, good understanding of integrative taxonomy and excellent analytical skills. Social skills are required for interactions with stakeholders. Some knowledge of German/Swiss-German is an asset but not absolutely necessary.
  2. Aquatic ecologist, evolutionary or conservation biologist to co-lead the field work with emphasis on ecological and environmental data collection and invertebrates. Employment at Postdoc/senior Postdoc level depending on experience. Qualifications: PhD in aquatic ecology/taxonomy/systematics with excellent knowledge of aquatic systems beyond fish and excellent analytical skills. Social skills are required for interactions with stakeholders. Some knowledge of German/Swiss-German is an asset but not absolutely necessary.
  3. Ecologist or evolutionary biologist with strong modelling skills to lead the niche modelling and projection of population dynamics and range shifts under climate and land-use change. Employment at Postdoc/senior Postdoc level depending on experience. Qualifications: PhD in ecology, conservation or evolutionary biology with strong background in ecological niche modelling and/or projections of biodiversity under climate change scenarios.
Your responsibilities include field work and data collection (position 1 and 2), data analysis, writing papers and publishing in leading journals in the field (all 3 positions). Provided appropriate skills, one senior Postdoc is expected to take on the responsibilities of overall project management. The group of Seehausen is based at the Institute of Ecology & Evolution of the University of Bern and at the Eawag Centre for Ecology, Evolution & Biogeochemistry in Kastanienbaum (Lucerne). The group works on the ecology, evolution and conservation of freshwater fish with a strong focus on the fish of the Alpine region and the African Great Lakes. The Postdocs and the Technician in this project will function as a project team within a much larger team of ecologists, evolutionary biologists and conservationists. The group’s working language is English and fluency in speaking and writing is required. Knowledge of German is also required for the field technician. Salary will be according to University of Bern salary scheme and commensurate with experience and job profile (e.g. responsibilities as project manager). Members in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences at McGill University are seeking highly motivated applicants for graduate student, postdoc, and research technician positions for the FISHSENS project for Fall 2021. Most marine fishes in Canada’s Arctic are not well enough known to assess how they will be affected by climate change, information which is urgently needed to reduce Arctic biodiversity loss and protect northern cultural and food systems.

FISHSENS will combine genomics data with dietary and movement assessments to develop tools needed by federal and Inuit co-management partners to establish Arctic marine fish monitoring strategies and assess their sensitivity to climate change. Recruited candidates will develop projects combining laboratory and data analysis approaches and will collaborate with Canadian academic, government, and Inuit organizations in Nunavut and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region in the Northwest Territories.

Ideal candidates will have a strong work ethic, enthusiasm for the research, independent and team-work skills, and a suitable academic training in a relevant discipline: natural resources, ecology, evolution, genetics, bioinformatics, environmental chemistry, environmental science, or a closely related field, and experience in at least one of the following:
  • DNA extractions, library preparations, quality screening, PCR, extraction robots, gel docs, and associated instruments
  • Stable isotopes or fatty acids extraction and analysis (GC-FID, IRMS)
  • Statistical analysis of biological or environmental data (e.g., in R), bioinformatics tools (e.g., VCFtools, genome assemblies, and annotation)
  • Fieldwork, fish identifications, working in Inuit communities and organizations
Potential graduate students will have to apply to the Department of Natural Resource Sciences at McGill, which has strict admission standards (minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, or 3.2/4.0 in the last two years).
