Master Internship: Estimation of genetic load through prediction tools and evaluation of its impact in resilience and productivity of grapevine

Population genetics theory predicts that most of the new mutations occurring in a population are neutral or slightly deleterious. High effect deleterious mutations would be rapidly removed by the means of
purifying selection. The efficacy of natural selection to remove harmful alleles can be compromised under certain situations, such as demographic bottlenecks and the presence of Hill-Robertson interference (i.e. a phenomenon that links alleles that may have different fitness values into regions of low recombination). A reduced efficacy of purifying selection entails the accumulation of deleterious mutations (genetic load) that can compromise the fitness of natural populations or the productivity and resilience in crop species. Identifying, controlling and repairing these mutations in major crop species have been identified as a capital question to move to next-generation breeding.

The main goal of this internship is to establish the relationship between genetic load and the productivity and resilience in grapevine. To meet this goal, we will take advantage of a panel of different grapevine varieties, combining whole genome re-sequencing data with the evaluation of plant fitness components (vegetative growth, grape production and resilience traits).

The activities of the student will mainly imply computer work and occasionally he/she could participate in field-work. Data analysis will imply:
  • Test different bioinformatic tools to identify potentially deleterious mutations (such us SNPeff, PROVEAN…)
  • Analyze phenotypic data from the experimental plot.
  • Estimate the correlation between the accumulation of deleterious mutations and the measured phenotypes.

The University of Cantabria invites applications for an 18 months Research Associate holding a PhD in Geochemistry, Archaeology, Biology, Geology, Prehistory, History, Earth Science (palaeoclimate reconstruction), or related subjects. The aim of the project is to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental conditions during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in Southern European peninsulas by analysing multi-isotopic values in archaeological animal bones (collagen).

Who should apply?

Ideal candidates have earned a PhD in Archaeology, Prehistory, Geochemist, Earth Science or related subjects, have a strong commitment to research, are passionate about animal-environment-human relationships, enjoy analysing coding and writing, and have some experience and interest in at least one of the areas described above.

Good writing, analytical and programming (ideal) skills are required. Good command of English both spoken and written is also required.

Eligibility criteria
The RA will have:
  • a PhD in Geochemistry, Archaeology, Biology, Geology, Prehistory, History, Prehistory, Earth Science or related fields.
  • Knowledge in stable isotopes applied to archaeological contexts.
  • Experience of advanced analyses of isotopic data and/or modelling data;
  • Ideally, knowledge of methods and tools of statistical analysis (e.g. R) and in managing large data sets.
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination.
  • Capacity to work independently and in a team, to lead on specific tasks and deliver on time under pressing deadlines.
  • Interest in working in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • The position is based on the University of Cantabria in Spain. Starting date between July-September 2022. Full-time position for 18 months.

About SUBSILIENCE PROJECT

SUBSILIENCE is an ERC Consolidator Grant project (ref 818299) funded by the ERC Executive Agency (ERCEA) based at the University of Cantabria (Spain). Principal Investigator is Assistant Professor, Ana B. Marín-Arroyo, University of Cantabria, marinab@unican.es

The RA position is advertised within an ERC-Consolidator Grant (ref. 818299) funded by the ERC Executive Agency (ERCEA) on “Subsistence and human resilience to sudden climatic events in Europe during MIS3” (https://www.subsilience.eu/). The main objective of this project is to evaluate the subsistence and resilience of Neanderthals and Anatomically Modern Humans to MIS3 climatic events, in different archaeological sites located in the southern European Peninsulas, dating from Mousterian to Gravettian periods.

The RA will be involved in the analysis and interpretation of isotopic (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S,) data obtained from archaeofaunal assemblages of archaeological sites. The RA will process isotope results already available to prepare publications and conferences presentations.

The post-doctoral fellow will join a young and dynamic scientific team at EvoAdapta (https://evoadapta.unican.es) and will work closely with international experts in stable isotope analysis, radiocarbon dating, zooarchaeology and human evolutionary studies.
