Postdoctoral Researcher in Coral Eco-Evolutionary Modeling (Hawai'i)

LOCATION: Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Eco-evolutionary modeling to inform coral reef management within National Marine Sanctuaries

Coral reefs face unprecedented challenges due to climate change, necessitating a deeper understanding of their adaptive potential. This project aims to develop eco-evolutionary models to advance our understanding of coral reef responses to environmental stressors and evaluate management strategies in the Pacific Islands Region’s National Marine Sanctuaries, both existing and proposed. The project will investigate key adaptation mechanisms, including genetic diversity, heritability, dispersal and population growth rates of different coral species. We will work closely with stakeholders to test a set of management strategies with the model, including assisted gene flow, coral restoration and wastewater management. This research will provide critical insights for predicting reef futures and evaluating management interventions in a changing climate.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES/SKILLSETS

The successful applicant will serve as a Postdoctoral Researcher within the Marine Ecological Theory Lab <https://lmcmanus47.github.io/index.html> (PI Lisa McManus) at the Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The successful candidate will contribute to the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries Pacific Islands Region (ONMS)/HIMB Pacific Remote Sites Partnership project. They will conduct eco-evolutionary modeling studies to inform coral reef management in National Marine Sanctuaries. Specifically, the successful candidate will develop and implement models simulating coral dynamics under various scenarios, perform sensitivity analyses, and manage data collection and analysis. Working with the PI and collaborators, they will adapt models for specific Pacific Islands reef systems, interpret results to link human actions to reef outcomes, and disseminate findings through presentations and publications. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D., strong modeling and data analysis skills, and expertise in ecological modeling. Excellent communication skills are essential. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to coral reef conservation while advancing modeling skills and conducting impactful research. Preferred start date is September 2024 or soon after. Expected salary is approximately $65K USD per year.

Required qualifications:

Ph.D. in Ecology, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or related field
Experience in ecological or eco-evolutionary modeling, including development, implementation and analysis
Programming experience in languages commonly used for ecological modeling (e.g., Python, Julia, R, or similar)
Strong publication record demonstrating novel, independent research and project completion
Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Desirable qualifications:

Working knowledge of climate change impacts on marine ecosystems, especially coral reefs
Demonstrated aptitude for applying advanced quantitative and computational tools in a research setting
Experience with implementing ecological models in marine contexts

The position


This is a seasonal, full-time position from late-September through mid-December 2023, and is primarily fieldwork, with a lesser component of office work. The position has potential for renewal for the 2024 breeding season (mid-April through mid-December 2024). Lodging is provided for the duration of the project and will change frequently based on survey locations on Maui. Fieldwork is an odd schedule, with two surveys per day – dusk & dawn. Dusk surveys start with arriving to a site 30 minutes prior to sunset, setting up and surveying from sunset for 3 hours, then packing up equipment and heading to lodging. Dawn surveys begin by arriving to site 30 minutes prior to survey, setting-up, and surveying for 2-3 hours ending at sunrise, then packing up and returning to lodging. Fieldwork will typically occur Sun evening through Fri mornings, but may be variable depending on available lodging, and may include overnight stays at a subsample of sites.


Duties may include:


Conducting surveys to monitor and identify Hawaiian seabirds by sight and sound.

Serving as Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, and/or Lead monitor on projects.

Performing surveys for ESA-listed Hawaiian seabirds.

Performing high-quality, precise work using scientific protocols.

Working together with staff and project stakeholders.

Preparing technical summary reports and preparing/reviewing field data.

Traveling for field projects, meetings, and/or training.

Working odd hours, including early mornings and late evenings in the field, as needed.


Who you are


You should have excellent communication, scientific writing, and field research skills. You must be comfortable working as part of a two-person team.


You must have:


B.S. or M.S. degree in the following fields: Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, or a similar course of study.

1+ seasons of Hawaiian wildlife survey experience, preferably with sea and water birds.

1-2+ seasons of avian survey experience.

Familiarity with state/federal environmental laws and regulations.

Proficiency with Microsoft apps, data analysis, software, and tools

Strong organizational skills.

Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to remote, rugged field locations.

Must be able to pass a federal background check and be authorized to work in the U.S.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Hawaii Marine Animal Response (HMAR) is the field operations arm of Hawaii
Marine Mammal Alliance Inc. and is the largest Hawaii-based non-profit
marine species conservation and response organization. We cover nearly 300
miles of coastline on the islands of Oahu and Molokai with our team of
volunteers, interns and staff. We are a U.S. based 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization dedicated to the preservation, conservation and stewardship of
Hawaii's protected marine species and our ocean ecosystem. We focus our
work on marine species whose natural behaviors and habitat put animals in
close proximity to and are therefore most affected by human impacts. These
species include the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, the threatened green sea
turtle, the endangered hawksbill sea turtle and several vulnerable seabird
species. HMAR is supported by private donations, corporate funding and
government grants and operates under partnerships with the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,

FIELD OUTREACH AND SUPPORT (FSO) TEAM INTERN DUTIES:

-Responding to sightings of endangered or threatened marine species such
as Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles to provide shoreline response to
haul-outs and strandings.

-Perform or assist in field escalations, interventions, stranding support
and rescues.

-Report on animal behavior, provide animal assessment information, provide
photo-documentation and other important data used in protected marine
species research, health management and species recovery efforts.

-Perform outreach to the public to teach sustainable human interaction and
fishery behaviors and encourage stewardship of protected marine species and
the ocean ecosystem.

-Participate in dispatch and reporting activity such as the taking and
documenting phone call reports of marine species activity, coordinating
field response activity, data entry and generating reports.

LOCATION: These positions require on-island travel throughout the island of
Oahu in the State of Hawaii.

FIELD SUPPORT AND OUTREACH (FSO) INTERN GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

-This is an un-paid internship that requires the intern to live on the
island of Oahu in the State of Hawaii for the period beginning 2 weeks
prior to the start of the internship until the end of the internship. The
intern is responsible for all lodging, living and transportation costs
associated with the internship.

-U.S. citizenship or possession of a passport and all applicable visas and
work permits are needed prior to and during the internship period.

-18 or more years of age.

-English language fluency.

-Must be a degree-seeking student or a graduate of a college or university
program associated with one of the following courses of study: marine
biology, marine ecology, conservation, environmental science or a related
field.

-Minimum grade point average (GPA). For college/university graduates, a
2.7 cumulative GPA prior to the internship. For current students, a 2.7
cumulative GPA prior to and during the internship.

-If college credit for this internship is desired it is the responsibility
of the intern to obtain necessary approvals from the applicable college or
university.

-Ability to walk in sandy, rocky and unstable shoreline conditions for 2
miles.

- Ability to work outdoors in a sunny, rainy, windy and hot climate.

-Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 75 pounds for 100 feet in
shoreline beach and rocky conditions.

-Ability to swim required.

-Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in potentially stressful conditions.

-Possess a team-based work ethic and attitude.

-Acceptance of our Intern Policies, Waivers, Releases and Indemnifications
agreement.

-Attend mandatory in-field or classroom training sessions as required.

- Possess an interest in and a desire to engage with the public.

- Must have access to a reliable car or truck (truck preferred) during the
internship period. Motorcycles or scooters will not be sufficient.

-Possession of a valid driver's license.

-Proof of automobile insurance carrying Hawaii minimum liability coverage
levels.

-Access to a cellular phone with 4G data service and camera.

-Access to a digital camera (not a smartphone) with at least a 35X zoom lens and
Wi-Fi capability. If it does not have wifi capability, you can buy an adapter.

FIELD SUPPORT AND OUTREACH INTERNSHIP ACTIVITY EXPECTATIONS:

- Internship term: Minimum of 3 months (may be extended for up to 1 year
upon mutual agreement). Start date for 3-month minimum internship is
somewhat flexible, but must be between August 15th and September 30th,
2020. Interns must be on Oahu, settled and ready to begin training at least
2 weeks prior to the internship start date.

-Hours per week: 20 hours minimum, however, due to the unpredictable nature
of marine animal response, the intern may sometimes be required to work
beyond, or outside of, their normal scheduled hours. Work hours flexibility
is required. Travel time to and from training and field response locations
is not included in these minimum hours. The intern must be able and willing
to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

-The intern must be available for response anywhere on the Island of Oahu
in the State of Hawaii.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai’i at Manoa, seeks applications for a faculty member / Assistant Researcher in the field of Coral Conservation Genetics and Coral Reef Restoration Ecology.

Duties and responsibilities include to conduct scientific research in the field of conservation genetics and coral reef restoration ecology. Conduct conservation genetic and biodiversity research on coral reef ecosystems and associated organisms, including phylogenomic analyses of Reduced Representation (RAD) genomic datasets for population and species-level patterns. Develop environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis pipelines for metabarcoding of fish, algal and invertebrate mesophotic coral reef communities. Develop eDNA biomonitoring tools for Species of Concern and alien species. Maintain a floating coral nursery platform to conduct research on coral micro-fragmentation, genotype by environment interactions, and reef restoration techniques. Write proposals for future support, publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Present results at appropriate conferences and public meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in the fields of Marine Biology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology or equivalent life sciences degree.
Ten years of experience conducting conservation genetic and/or coral cultivation/restoration research.
Two years of experience working with resource managers at the State and/or Federal level.
Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with sound critical thinking and proper scientific methods.
Demonstrated ability to communicate results to the science community through peer-reviewed publications, including first-authored publications, and public presentations.
Demonstrated history of obtaining extramural funding in support of coral restoration and/or conservation genetics.
Experience with coral restoration and the construction and maintenance of coral nurseries.
Experience working with State, Federal, and NGO stakeholders on coral reef conservation issues.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications
Demonstrated background in phylogenetics, phylogenomics, high throughput sequencing, and data analyses, including Linux scripting and command line bioinformatic pipelines.
Proficiency with RADseq approaches and data analysis, proficiency with installing, compiling and running Linux programs, BASH scripts, and statistical analysis in R.

Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is seeking a motivated and resourceful individual to support our work on Maui. This is a part time role that will include between 5-10 hours/week of work as needed. This role will support our stream restoration project that is currently planned to finish on May 31st, 2020 with possibility for extension.

This role will ensure the successful execution of a monitoring plan that measures the impact of restoration activities designed to reduce sediment and nutrient pollution in Wahikuli and Honokōwai streams in West Maui. The Research Officer will coordinate data collection activities by various parties and ensure protocols are followed to ensure data quality. They will report to the Program Manager who is based in Maui.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
**Execute data collection for identified components of the monitoring plan. These are anticipated to include:
Monitoring sediment posts and erosion pins to measure sediment accumulation or loss from stream banks
Monitor sediment posts at restoration sites for accumulation or loss
Track and log in-stream turbidity data and ensure equipment is functioning properly
Photographic documentation of before and after pictures of installed restoration BMPs and monitoring of their performance over time
Recording survivorship and growth of plants
Collecting and analyzing video footage of streams following during storm events
Collecting and analyzing rain gauge and weather station data from partners
Collecting and analyzing photographic documentation of brown water events
Track satellite data from weather stations and turbidity monitors and upload to data storage website
Collect and collate data from partners on an as needed basis
Conduct data analysis
Develop periodic reports for CORAL and stakeholders as needed
Develop a final report (December 2019)

** If the Research Officer is not based on Maui, they must be able to make regular visits to Maui (every 2-3 months, including after significant storms) to ensure data collection is being implemented in line with protocols and data quality standards.

If the candidate is interested to lead the development of a paper, there may be an opportunity to publish project results in a peer-reviewed journal.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

The minimum required qualifications include BA/BS degree in physical science-related field, such as geology, environmental science, fluvial geomorphology and hydrology.

Additionally, the Research Officer must have:
Experience with installing, monitoring, and troubleshooting water quality monitoring instruments
Field experience with HOBO pressure transducers, turbidity probes, telemetric instrument installation, data loggers, and ISCO sampler units.
Experience collecting, preparing, and analyzing water quality data
Excellent organizational and prioritization skills, including developing and maintaining research plans and coordinating with multiple collaborators.
Resourcefulness and ability to work proactively; ability to complete tasks independently, efficiently, and in a timely manner; and the ability to work effectively with a remote team
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals from a variety of disciplines, cultures and backgrounds
Ability to work in hazardous steep terrain, hiking over several miles to project sites in all types of weather ranging from very hot and dry, to cold and rainy

Ability to safely drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle over steep unimproved roads
The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid U.S Driver’s license and good driving record
The position requires that the successful candidate be able to perform field work in hot dry and sometimes wet conditions in the mid slope region, as well as the ability to swim, snorkel and lift 50 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Research Officer may work in variable weather conditions, at remote outdoor locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, coastal and marine environments and vessels, and under physically demanding circumstances that may require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Work conditions may require international and domestic travel including to remote island areas, the mainland US, neighboring and other islands or nations. Additionally, the work may be performed independently without day-to-day supervision.

COMPENSATION AND WORK-SCHEDULE: Competitive wage. Estimated between 5 and 10 hours per week. Some weeks there may be a heavier load than others depending on where we are at with project execution. OUR WORK IN HAWAIʻI

CORAL has more than a decade of experience working in the Main Hawaiian Islands on coral reef conservation. Currently, our work focuses on our Clean Water for Reefs Initiative, with an emphasis on preventing land-based sources of pollution from entering streams and groundwater which eventually lead to the ocean.

In West Maui, our work focuses on restoring natural filtration processes within watersheds. We take a “ridge to reef” approach to restore the natural function of an ahupua‘a (watershed) to filter stormwater and absorb nutrients, sediments and other chemicals. At the shoreline (makai), we provide guidance to shoreline property owners, the tourism industry, and Maui County on how to implement reef-friendly landscaping using low impact design (LID) to naturally filter stormwater before it reaches the ocean.

Further mauka in the midslope region, we recently launched a major multi-stakeholder project to restore streams and watershed function to reduce the amount of sediment and nutrients flowing to the ocean. We are working with farmers, Hawaiian communities, local nonprofits, private businesses, and the government to pilot watershed restoration techniques that combine modern technology with native vegetation and traditional agricultural practices, such as wetland taro patches (loʻi kalo). The Conservation Leadership Development Program (CLDP) has been developed for members who are looking for an intensive entry-level experience in preparation for a career in the conservation field. Members serve at a single host site/agency that best matches the individual’s interests. Applicants must be comfortable serving in rugged environments, and be able to perform physically demanding duties (see physical and behavioral requirements below*).

As previously mentioned, participants in the CLDP serves with a single environmental agency for the duration of the membership (approximately eleven months). Members typically serve one-on-one with a mentor/supervisor to gain a more in-depth understanding of the agency as a whole, as well as the type of environmental duties and research the agency is involved in. Members may participate in a variety of conservation activities and serve across various landscapes, depending on the agency they are selected by. This may include fieldwork, research projects and presentations, leading/assisting with volunteer groups, etc. Members will gain valuable experiential
education throughout the program, and will have the opportunity to build close relationships with conservation field experts. He/she will also gain skills in the areas of leadership, organization, and decision-making, serve in some of the most interesting and beautiful natural areasin Hawai‘i and have an opportunity to make a positive impact in those areas.

Although a site-specific Position Description will be provided by the Host Site, CLDP members typically begin serving at their site immediately after the program starts and participate in program activities Monday through Friday. The program will involve all weekdays (with schedules ranging between 7am-5pm) with possible weekends, evenings and/or camping. Members may have extensive camping requirements throughout the program depending on the needs of the host-agency. Due to the individual nature of the Conservation Leadership Development Program and the length of the service term, members are held to a high degree of personal responsibility. On a monthly basis, CLDP members are expected to check in with their program coordinator, keep a record of their efforts and ensure timesheets and other paperwork are turned in on time.

Postdoc on conservation genomics between New Zealand and Hawaii

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on a Marsden-funded research
project titled ﹕esolving the genomic architecture of hatching failure to
improve conservation of endangered birds' and will involve conducting
genomic research on two critically endangered birds, the Alala (Hawaii) and
Kakapo (New Zealand). The project will combine genomic and bioinformatic
analyses with the conservation management of these threatened species, with
the successful applicant spending time in both New Zealand (University of
Otago) and Hawaii (University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Keauhou Bird
Conservation Center, both of which are on the Island of Hawaii).

Your Skills and Experience:
- A PhD and research experience in conservation genetics, evolutionary
genetics or genomics of diploid organisms is essential.
- Experience in population genomic and bioinformatic analyses is essential.
- Experience with whole genome analyses is desirable.
- Experience with different types of phenotype-genotype analyses is an
advantage (e.g. genome-wide association studies (GWAS), analysis of runs of
homozygosity (ROH)).
- Experience with analysis of pedigrees is an advantage.
- Good knowledge of conservation biology and conservation genetics,
including inbreeding and inbreeding depression, is an advantage.
- Knowledge of avian biology, ecology, and animal behaviour is an advantage.

The goal of this course is to expose participants to innovative technologies and their uses in the field of marine science. The course will be open to incoming and current graduate students, postdocs, and other early-career researchers. The course will leverage the exceptional research capacities, facilities, and location of HIMB and Moku o Lo’e (Coconut Island) to advance scientific and career goals of participants who otherwise would not have this unique opportunity. The course will include lectures, hands-on field work, a lab component, and data analysis for projects developed during the program. The course will provide a brief introduction to the fundamentals of conducting robust science, including ethics in science, open and reproducible science, science communication beyond academia to diverse stakeholder groups, and more. Included in the course will be a statistical programming module and guest lectures by scientists, conservation practitioners, and/or managers using cutting-edge technology. Participants will gain hands-on exposure to one or more specific technologies and tools (e.g., unoccupied aerial systems (UAS), above-water and underwater photogrammetry, remote sensing imagery, 3D laser scanning and printing). Participants will gain hands-on experience with one type of technology relevant to the instructors’ research portfolios. Participants will be engaged in project design, data collection/compilation, data analysis, and potentially publication of results of group research topics. Broadening participants’ exposure to new and emerging technologies will provide them with a strong foundation on which to incorporate these technologies into their scientific and career goals.

Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program

The Edwin W. Pauley Summer Program in Marine Biology is a graduate-level research and training program, which draws faculty and students from around the world. Each summer, a new topic is chosen to be the research focus of that program.

Announcements concerning the topic of the summer program are made around March of each year.

Faculty and researchers give seminars and instruct students in the new field and laboratory techniques. Faculty members frequently use the facilities of the Institute to further their research, or to obtain specimens from our tropical environment. Students are nominated by the professors attending the program, but a few students may be selected independently as well.

Academic credit is not given for the program.

Project Summary

Two major threats to birds worldwide are collisions with power lines and disorientation caused by artificial light sources. This is especially true on the Hawaiian island of Kaua`i, where both power lines and artificial lights are a serious threat to the three endangered and endemic seabirds, the Newell’s Shearwater, Hawaiian Petrel, and Band-rumped Storm-Petrel. These seabirds are vulnerable to colliding with power lines when they make frequent nocturnal flights from the sea to their montane breeding colonies and back again. The young of these species are particularly vulnerable to grounding when they become disoriented by artificial lights on their maiden voyage out to sea in the Autumn.

The Underline Monitoring Project (UMP) is a sub-project within the Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project (KESRP), and has multiple related research avenues: 1) determine where and to what extent seabirds hit power lines or are grounded by lights, 2) identify environmental and behavioral predictors of power line collision and grounding, and 3) conduct experiments testing the efficacy of minimization strategies. Job Summary
(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project, Underline Monitoring Project, located on Kauai. DUTIES: Monitors wildlife impacts as a result of human activities associated with electrical transmission, distribution infrastructure, and outdoor lighting. Works under the direction of the Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project (KESRP) Avian Conservation Biologist. Duties include incidental take monitoring, biological monitoring, seabird population survey and monitoring, mapping species locations, data entry, and preliminary analyses of field data. Performs effective public outreach. Operates a motor vehicle, radar unit, and a variety of equipment for field studies. Must adhere to equipment use, pesticide use, and invasive species prevention protocols. Significant amounts of nighttime and early morning survey work will be required.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: One to three (1-3) years of college level biological sciences coursework from an accredited college or university. Description: The State of Hawai'i’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) is seeking volunteers for work at Kure Atoll Wildlife Sanctuary in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Kure Atoll is a part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (PMNM), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is located 1,400 miles northwest of O'ahu. Kure Atoll occupies a unique position referred to as the “Darwin Point”, which is the northern extent of coral reef development and the atoll is estimated to be 29.8 million years old. Kure is an important breeding site for wildlife, including several rare and endangered species. Eighteen species of seabirds nest on Kure including Black-footed albatross (Phoebastria nigripes) and Christmas shearwaters (Puffinus nativitatus). The endangered Laysan teal (Anas laysanensis) was recently introduced to Kure. Currently native plant species are outnumbered by non-native and invasive plant species. DLNR is committed to eradicating the invasive plant Golden crown-beard (Verbesina encelioides) from the atoll. Invasive plants are a significant management concern because they displace native plant habitat and nesting areas, and may entrap wildlife in a dense vegetative mass. Native plants are an integral resource for nesting habitat and dune stabilization. This position is a unique opportunity to protect and recover important habitat while living in an intact wildlife sanctuary!

Kure Atoll is an extremely remote work location. Transportation to/from Kure Atoll is by ship and is infrequent. The ability to live and work in close quarters with a small group of people for an extended period of time is of the utmost importance. The seasonal field teams consist of 6 to 8 people. Due to limited transportation, there are only 2 field seasons per year (approximately 6 months each). Contact on Kure is limited to text only e-mail (no pictures or attachments) through the field station’s satellite phone. There is no Internet or cell phone service available.

Strict Quarantine: Biosecurity protocols are in place to prevent further introduction of alien species. This quarantine requires that all “soft” items (clothing, shoes, straps, etc.) must be purchased new and frozen for 48 hours prior to departure to Kure Atoll. All “hard” items (cameras, electronics, musical instruments, etc.) must be inspected thoroughly and may need to be frozen or fumigated prior to departure.

Primary responsibilities include: invasive plant removal (manual and chemical), Big-headed ant monitoring, Laysan teal monitoring, native plant propagation and out-planting, vegetation surveys, seabird and shorebird surveys, Hawaiian monk seal monitoring, marine debris removal, data collection and entry, weekly meetings. Additionally, all personnel will help with regular camp upkeep and chores outside of regular work hours.

**Although the work load is diverse, most of the hours are dedicated to invasive plant removal (75-80%)**

Desired Skills/Experience: invasive species management, plant identification, Hawaiian plant propagation and out-planting, avian reproductive monitoring and identification, binocular/spotting scope use, data management, familiarity with Excel and ArcGIS, GPS use. Other useful skills include carpentry, boating, and maintenance.

Requirements: strong interpersonal skills, excellent physical and mental health, able to walk 10 miles per day with a 40lb pack over uneven terrain, lift 50 lbs., work for long hours in uncomfortable and/or unpredictable weather, bend or stoop for long periods of time, able to swim, 20/20 color vision or correctable lenses. Must be comfortable with use of pesticides.

Personnel can expect to work 40+ hrs/wk. Although most weeks are Monday-Friday, work hours are project dependent and may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends. DLNR/ DOFAW will provide transportation between Honolulu and Kure Atoll. Travel dates are subject to change. Lodging and food while on Kure and in transit between Honolulu and Kure are provided. Most field clothes and gear are provided. Applicant must supply all other transportation, housing, and personal items.

Telemetry technician needed (1 position) to study game bird ecology as part of a seed dispersal study on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

Forest ecosystems of the Hawaiian Islands have increasingly faced threats of species extinction and biological invasion, resulting in novel communities composed of native and non-native species. Although many native Hawaiian plants rely on birds for seed dispersal, nearly all native frugivorous birds are extinct. In the last century, the Kalij Pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) and Erckel’s Francolin (Pternistis erckelii) were introduced to the Hawaiian Islands for recreational hunting. We are investigating the ecological impacts of these two species on seed dispersal networks.

Technician responsibilities will include tracking and monitoring game birds (GPS/UHF telemetry), bird capture and banding, line transect surveys, behavioral observations, vegetation surveys, fecal sample collection, camera trap deployment, and data entry. Fieldwork will involve long days of strenuous hiking and heavy lifting in temperamental weather conditions.

This research is a part of the Hawaii VINE Project, a collaborative research effort seeking to determine how well different species of non-native vertebrates disperse native plants species.

Start date is mid-January. The duration of this position is 6 months, with the potential to extend.

We will provide housing, a living stipend of $1,000 per month, and access to vehicles.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, zoology, ecology or a related field and at least two years of field experience pertaining to wildlife biology or botany are required. Applicants MUST have experience with telemetry and bird banding, and be responsible, organized, and comfortable working independently.

Overview

In 2014, The Marine Mammal Center opened Ke Kai Ola (“The Healing Sea”) a hospital and education center dedicated to caring for injured, ill, and orphaned Hawaiian monk seals and returning them to the wild and to be a place where children and the community learn to care for this beautiful marine mammal. The goal of Ke Kai Ola is to promote Hawaiian monk seal recovery through 1) a science-based rehabilitation program; 2) a highly trained and well-managed volunteer stranding response network; and 3) coordinated community efforts and partnerships to inspire the local community to protect, care for, and ensure the future of this endangered species.



The Hospital Director of Ke Kai Ola works as an integrated member of the Kailua Kona community and the broader conservation and education communities in Hawaii, and across departments at The Marine Mammal Center to ensure that Ke Kai Ola is tightly integrated into the Center’s planning and operations by closely liaising with directors and staff of the Veterinary Science, Life Support System and Facilities, Education and Guest Experience, Development and Marketing, Finance, and People and Culture departments. The hospital director is responsible for the strategy, structure, budgets, people, financial outcomes and agreed metrics of Ke Kai Ola. S/he administers and managesveterinary care of Hawaiian monk seal patients, manages the day-to-day operations of the hospital and works to ensure the growth and sustainability of the program. The person in this role works quite closely with colleagues at NOAA Fisheries, and directly manages a team of two staff and many volunteers. This position reports to the Executive Director, is a part of the Management Team, and works between Kona, HI and Sausalito, CA.

· Invest in building relationships, fostering community, representing The Marine Mammal Center and Ke Kai Ola to Hawaiian partners, colleagues and supporters, and listening and learning to members of those same groups to encourage the continued positive embrace of the community and to identify pathways towards further strengthening rich and mutually beneficial relationships.



Management

· Serve as a member of Management Team, the Marine Mammal Center’s leadership body, and work alongside department directors to set strategy and guide the organization in the achievement of its mission.

· Develop an annual budget and manage revenue and expenses in compliance with Center policies and procedures and in coordination with the Chief Financial Officer.

· Liaise with department leads to ensure coordinated planning, collaborative work efforts, integrated programming and shared success towards agreed goals.

· Manage direct reports including partnering with the Human Resource function to support individuals through their employee life cycle. Responsibilities include setting goals and ensuring accountability, providing timely and routine feedback, counseling, and managing employment transitions.

· Support education program staff and integrate into Ke Kai Ola workforce community. Coordinate with TMMC-based supervisor to ensure close communication, guidance and support.

· Lead, supervise and support a dynamic and growing facility and animal care volunteer corps, in coordination with the Director of People and Culture and the Volunteer Services Manager.



Veterinary Care

· Manage veterinary care and provide a lead role in direct veterinary support for Hawaiian monk seals in rehabilitation at Ke Kai Ola.

· Implement communication strategies that engage external partners (NOAA Fisheries, chief among them) on matters of short- and long-term consequence (including individual patient treatment and diagnostic plans, policies and procedures as they relate to patient care, coordination of patient transportation, etc.)

· Direct the management of the hospital to ensure facility operation, equipment and supply readiness, and adequate staffing.

· Ensure compliance with all required permitting and record-keeping.



Communication

· Lead and coordinate communication amongst Ke Kai Ola staff and volunteers.

· Liaise with Center staff outside of Hawaii to ensure that Ke Kai Ola community is integrally connected with other TMMC staff and volunteers via multiple communication vehicles.

· Foster and develop community engagement and awareness in Kona and the broader Main Hawaiian Islands.

· Chair the Ke Kai Ola advisory council.

· Represent TMMC and Ke Kai Ola on the Hawaiian Monk Seal Recovery Team.

· Collaborate with Media team and Education team to promote communication of Ke Kai Ola clinical care, science and research.

· Represent TMMC and its mission before a spectrum of audiences; press, professional associations, donors, staff, volunteers, the public.



Development

· Partner with development colleagues to support and lead efforts to raise revenue through major donor cultivation, donor events, and pursuit of foundation, public (federal, state, and local) and corporate funding opportunities.

· Prospect Development: Work with community members and other leadership volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward appropriate donors. Implement programs/activities to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors at the $2,500 level or higher, with an emphasis on maximizing revenue for TMMC. Update donor records in TMMC database.

· Relationship Development: Develop ongoing relationships with major donors for the benefits of TMMC. Accountable for cultivating relationships for individual and institutional fundraising, as outlined below:

o Individuals: Cultivate relationships with individual donors personally and by supporting volunteer leaders in peer-to-peer outreach.

o Organizations: Cultivate, solicit and steward support from corporations and foundations to meet annual fundraising goals within the Region

· Partner with TMMC research staff and external colleagues to maximize funding opportunities dedicated to Hawaiian monk seal research.



Research

· Encourage and support internal and external collaborations to advance clinical science in support of Hawaiian monk seal conservation.

· Collaborate and/or lead studies and secure funding for research that furthers the TMMC

mission; analyze data and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.



Additional TMMC Responsibilities

· As assigned (but may include limited contract work, or other marine mammal conservation projects.



Knowledge + Abilities

· The successful applicant must be well-versed in fundamental and applied clinical veterinary medicine in marine mammal species, and possess an in-depth knowledge of current conservation strategies as they relate to the Hawaiian monk Seal.

· Experience with phocid medicine and rehabilitation required.

· Experience and familiarity with global marine conservation issues and skill in managing cross-functional, inter-agency, domestic and international programs required.

· A strong aptitude and disposition for teaching and training required.

· Very strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to advance the mission of TMMC.

· An appreciation for Hawaiian culture and a passion and humility for learning from local leaders and colleagues to best integrate people and programs into Hawaii communities.

Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent, with additional post-graduate degree or experience in fields preferred.

• Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California and Hawaii, and possession of a DEA license.

• Effective oral and written communication skills and ability and experience communicating in varied settings in front of diverse audiences.

• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to supervise and motivate volunteers and team members

• A proven track record for publishing in well-respected scientific journals.

• Ability to travel, nationally and internationally, for long periods.

• Committed to spend as much as 60 – 70% of time in Kona and 30 – 40% of time in Sausalito. (This ratio to shift based on program needs and other factors.)

• Comfort with various modes of travel including small watercraft, small planes.

• Comfort working in field conditions and extreme environments.

• Ability to carry up to 50 pounds.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service seeks Refuge Biology volunteers for a Six-month tour of duty for the Fall-Winter 2017-18 Season at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and the Battle of Midway National Memorial (NM).

About the refuge: Located on the far northern end of the Hawaiian archipelago within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. It is one the oldest atoll formations in the world that provides nesting habitat for millions of seabirds and it a touchstone for one of the most significant naval battles in our human history. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff, volunteers and contractors live on Midway Atoll NWR to support the recovery and integrity of wildlife habitat and species and to protect historical resources while balancing their own human impact on the land and seascapes.

Dates: The fall/winter volunteer season begins on September 5, 2017 and will end in mid-March 2018 (2018 flight schedule TBD). Applications are due by June 15, 2017. Start dates are set due to limited contract flights to Midway Atoll NWR and training requirements for new volunteers. Round-trip flights between Midway Atoll NWR and Honolulu, three meals a day, and housing at Midway Atoll NWR are provided..

Responsibilities: Volunteer work emphasizes habitat restoration including native plant propagation and out-planting, seed collection and processing, removal of invasive plants both by hand and through chemical application of herbicide, and monitoring plant populations. Other work includes seabird and Laysan duck monitoring, marine debris removal, data entry, and equipment maintenance, along with other tasks depending on current projects and refuge needs.

Volunteers:
o are expected to work 40 hours/week with additional weekend work when necessary
o should have a strong work ethic along with the ability to live and work closely with a small group of people for six months
o are responsible for the proper upkeep of their living quarters which includes individual bedrooms, a common living area, and a full kitchen
o must be willing and able to perform all duties in sub-tropical wind, sun, rain and humidity extremes
o must be physically fit and able to confidently ride a bike
o able to hike up to three miles in the sand or on uneven terrain while carrying a spray pack, lift 50 pounds
o must be willing to spray herbicide with proper protective gear
o must be willing to handle albatrosses and other seabirds for banding, monitoring studies, and disentanglements.
o able to pass a swimming proficiency test


Midway Atoll NWR is a remote site and accessible by plane twice a month. Because of the isolated nature of this work, safety is of the utmost importance. Volunteers should be aware that evacuation for emergencies or medical issues can typically take at least 24 hours and be potentially very expensive. All volunteers will need to carry medical-evacuation insurance. A current passport is required for travel to and from Midway Atoll NWR. Volunteers are responsible for their own travel to Honolulu.

The “Clipper House” on Midway Atoll NWR serves cafeteria-style food with a wide variety of dishes, including vegetarian options and a full salad bar, courtesy of the hydroponics garden. There is also a small convenience store on Midway Atoll NWR that provides some basics: toiletries, refreshments, etc. Midway Atoll NWR is a small community where volunteers will be working and living amongst Service employees, cooperators, and contractors. For everyone’s well being, there is a zero tolerance policy for harassment or abuse of any kind, including alcohol or drug abuse.

Postdoctoral Scholar in Microbial Oceanography (Hawaii)

The Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) is headquartered at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. C-MORE is organized around four interconnected themes: (I) Marine microbial biodiversity; (II) Microbial metabolism and biogeochemistry; (III) Remote and continuous in-situ sensing of microbial processes and their links to climate variability; and (IV) Ecosystem modeling, computer simulation and prediction. This interdisciplinary research consortium includes scientists, engineers and educators from the University of Hawaii, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California at Santa Cruz, Oregon State University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Columbia University and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. We are seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals to join the C-MORE team at the University of Hawaii as C-MORE Postdoctoral Scholars.

Areas of Focus: The C-MORE Postdoctoral Scholars' research will focus on one or more of the C-MORE theme areas as described above. Areas of special interest include (1) microbial diversity within marine plankton, including comparative genomics and the application of novel cultivation methods to isolate representatives of major groups; (2) marine virus ecology, including the development of virus-host systems for major groups of marine microbes; (3) physiology, metabolism and biogeochemistry of marine microbes; and (4) microbial community activities and dynamics assessed via high-throughput "omic" technologies, bioinformatics, and modeling. We are particularly interested in individuals whose expertise bridges disciplinary boundaries and will complement our ongoing Hawaii Ocean Experiment (HOE) field project. C-MORE Postdoctoral Scholars at UH will be encouraged to interact with scientists from the partner institutions, and those with strong career interests or experience in science education have additional opportunities to participate in C-MORE's innovative education and outreach programs.

Postdoc in Hawaii's forest birds

This post-doctoral opportunity is a 1 year position (with possibility of
an additional year of funding) to implement demographic modeling and
population viability analysis of Hawaii forest birds to address important
conservation issues.  Hawaii’s forest birds are famous for both their
unique diversity and dire conservation needs.  Population models of the
forest birds are needed to better understand how current and future
threats may affect population viability, and to evaluate relative
effectiveness of multiple management actions to prioritize conservation
resources.  Primary focus of position will be utilizing Integrated
Population Models (IPM) to link mark/recapture data with long-term census
data from Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, Hawaii Island, to
estimate demographic parameters for eight native and two introduced forest
bird species.  Population models will then be constructed for each species
using these demographic estimates and used to simulate population
viability under multiple threat and management scenarios to provide
guidance for mangers and policy makers.  This is a great opportunity for a
quantitative-orientated ecologist with a passion for conservation to work
closely with a diverse team of ecologists, field biologists, and managers
to help develop conservation strategies to ensure the persistence of an
imperiled community.  Opportunities to be involved in ongoing demographic
studies of the forest birds will be made available.  The position is based
