Overall purpose of the job

This role will in particular contribute to scaling up the restoration of European peatlands. A key driver of peatland loss and degradation in Europe is drainage and conversion for agriculture. Working with our member organisations and partners we pioneer, promote and advocate for sustainable climate-friendly alternatives to drainage-based agriculture including paludiculture. Increasingly carbon finance is playing an important role in enabling restoration and paludiculture and we are working to influence the development and implementation of relevant EU policy such as the Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming Certification Framework and Nature Restoration Law.

This position will primarily contribute with technical expertise to our policy work on peatland restoration and carbon financing, focusing on EU policy through advocacy activities and steering project implementation. The successful candidate will have a strong technical understanding and knowledge of European peatlands, their restoration and the importance of paludiculture. They will have a strong understanding of peatland relevant European policy and advocacy. Project management experience in EU funded projects is essential.

A priority for this position in the coming years will be to provide work package leadership, technical guidance, coordinate tasks under the PaluWise project and support similar work under other projects. PaluWise is an innovative and exciting project funded by Horizon Europe starting in early 2025, that focuses on paludiculture demonstrations and recommendations for large-scale adoption in the EU. The candidate will lead one of the project work packages on behalf of Wetlands International Europe. Working closely with our policy team, the candidate will contribute to EU level advocacy to advance paludiculture and wet farming activities in peatlands in related policies (e.g. Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Regulation).

Responsibilities and tasks

Policy advocacy and communicationsProvide technical input and support policy and advocacy work towards EU institutions and member states;
Provide technical input to policy analyses and advocacy materials such as policy briefs and reports;
Share peatland restoration and management best practices by organising site visits, stakeholder events, webinars and targeted publications to build political support;
Mobilise a community of paludiculture practitioners comprising key stakeholders (farmers, landowners, companies, decision-makers);

Conservation International (CI) is seeking a Grant Manager, who will be responsible for supporting CI staff and field teams in the maintenance of CI’s public donor portfolio through engagement with public bilateral and multilateral donors. RESPONSIBILITIES

• Oversee a portfolio of 15-20 active public projects (funded up to $10,000,000) from a variety of donors, with a focus on European donors.

• Lead project-related communication between CI and donors during the project lifecycle. Manage correspondence with donors regarding implementation, audits, and reporting.

• Organize and manage the project reporting process to ensure CI delivers on all reporting commitments to the donor. Monitor reporting schedules and assist field teams in meeting deadlines. Submit technical and financial reports to donors.

• Review and edit interim and final reports, budget narratives, and annual work plans submitted by CI, ensuring compliance with donor requirements.

• Assess technical inputs in reports (including Performance Indicators, Key Activities, Accomplishments, Staffing Updates, Gender/DEI Updates, Communications, and Project Challenges) to meet requirements for content and format. Ensure inputs are aligned to goals and objectives outlined in donor agreements and contracts.

• Collaborate with CI’s Awards Management Services (AMS) and Grants and Contracting Unit (GCU) on financial reports to donors.

• Ensure all relevant information about donors within Account Lead portfolios is entered and updated in internal databases such as Raiser's Edge, on a weekly basis.

• Organize and lead kick-off and close-out meetings for active grants and contracts, including support on project close-out and internal data management.

• Advise Project Leads and Project Finance Leads on donor stewardship throughout the course of the grant or contract to address donor needs.

• Strategize with donor and field teams to overcome challenges in project implementation.

Additional Responsibilities

• Align with the GPP Outreach team around collaboration opportunities or events with key donors that may arise during project implementation.

• Collaborate with the Outreach team on the kick-off process for new projects.

• Manage micro-assessment and audit process for active projects, collaborating with AMS and GCU to ensure timely responses to donors and auditors.

• Maintain data integrity in databases utilized by CI, including PowerBI, RE, and Business World; includes the creation and management of monitoring systems and PowerBI dashboards utilized by GPP.

• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The policy officer will support and coordinate BirdLife Partnership’s work on these policy areas and represent and promote BirdLife’s views to the EU Institutions, and also help design and deliver successful campaigns aiming to achieve the policy priorities of the organisation.

MAIN DUTIES/WORK PROGRAMME RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION/SKILLS AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A PhD or mobility postdoctoral position on fish modelling in the Black Sea.

A PhD or postdoctoral mobility position is available under a joint supervision at the Liège University (MAST-FOCUS group, Department of Astrophysics, Geophysics and Oceanography), the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) in the Nederland and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (US).

The research project aims at modelling the dynamics of selected fish species (e.g. anchovies, horse mackerel, sprat) in the Black Sea to assess the impact of past and projected environmental changes (e.g. deoxygenation, warming, fishing) on fish distribution and stocks. A Dynamic Energy Budget model will be coupled with an existing low trophic model that consists of a 3D hydrodynamical-biogeochemical model. The hydrodynamical model is the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO), the biogeochemical model is the BiogeochemicAl Model for Hypoxic and Benthic Influenced areas (BAMHBI). This coupled model is run in forecasting and reanalysis mode in the Black Sea in the frame of the marine Copernicus program (CMEMS).

The position is offered in the frame of the recently funded 4-year Horizon-Europe project NECCTON (New Copernicus Capability for Trophic Ocean Networks, 01/01/2023-31/12/2026).

Research activities
The candidate will have to develop and implement a model for the modelling of fish dynamics in the Black Sea and, in particular, to:

1. Implement an existing Dynamic Energy Budget developed for anchovies (in the California current system) forced by a coupled physical-biogeochemical model;
2. Finetune its parameterization for reproducing Black Sea’s selected fish species (mainly anchovies but also, sprat and horse mackerel);
3. Assess the impact of past environmental changes on fish stocks and distribution by performing multi-decadal simulations.
4. Perform climate projection along the Fish-MIP protocol under two scenarios of changes (SSP1-2.6, SSP5-8.5) and assess the impact of warming and deoxygenation on fish stocks and distribution.
5. At regional scales (i.e. the north-western shelf), assess the combined impact of environmental (e.g. eutrophication) and fishing effort changes (as provided by socio-economic analyses).

The outputs of the model will serve to support fishery management in the Black Sea at basin and regional scales in response to (over)fishing and the ongoing warming and deoxygenation processes. Interactions with a wide diversity of stakeholders (e.g. the FAO General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean and Black Sea, ICES, IUCN) are foreseen in the frame of NECCTON and other ongoing projects (e.g. the H2020 BRIDGE, the UN Decade Global Ocean Oxygen Decade program GOOD).

In addition to the scientific project described here above, the successful candidate will have to:

• Travel to project and international scientific meetings
• For the PhD candidate, to follow the Doctoral Formation mandatory for obtaining a PhD.
• To help in the supervision of master students and teaching activities performed by the group.

Requirements for application

• For PhD candidate: Applicants must have completed a master’s degree in a field closely related to geosciences, physics, engineering or equivalent.
• For post-doc candidate: Applicants must have a PhD in oceanography with an expertise in numerical modelling. Candidates must be non-Belgian citizens and should not have lived and/or worked in Belgium for more than 24 months during the past 3 years.
• Skill in programming in languages like R, FORTRAN, C, and/or Python is required. Also, knowledge of ecological modeling and population dynamics is beneficial.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Tropical Seascape Genetics

The Tropical Seascape Genetics is embedded in the SISSTEM program (University of Aruba) and the Division ‘Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity Conservation’ (KU Leuven). Marine science in the perspective of small islands offers excellent prospects for a career, especially during the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. We are looking for a motivated, and internationally oriented colleague with an excellent research record and a sound appreciation for research and outreach in a small island context.

Research assignment:
The research profile focuses on advanced expertise in seascape genetics to investigate research questions at the interface of marine evolution and global change biology. More specifically the candidate will determine the ecological and evolutionary interdependency of populations by studying the genetic structure and connectivity of tropical corals in the environmental context of the Southern Caribbean Sea (Southern Antilles). You genotype four coral taxa with high throughput genetic tools and analyze connectivity patterns with an individual- and population-based statistical models. The study will result in advice on the conservation management of coral reefs fitting in a context of regional anthropogenic impact. The position is funded by the European Union.

The candidate is expected to further develop the analysis of high-throughput microsatellite genotypes with biostatistical tools, and prepare high-quality scientific publications. You will be supported in your research by colleagues skilled in molecular tools and data analysis, and in the oceanographic and biological context of tropical research. Scientific, societal, and internal services are an integral part of the assignment.

The ideal candidate:
Is an excellent, internationally oriented researcher and strengthens a research program at the forefront of seascape genomics;
Brings complementary and/or new expertise in ecological and evolutionary genomics;
Strengthens current research lines by working closely with UA and KU Leuven staff;
Publishes at the highest scientific level in the top 5% journals of her/his research field;

Requirements:
Ph.D. in Marine Science, Oceanography, Molecular Ecology, or related disciplines.
Well acquainted with molecular ecology.
Intermediate to excellent programming skills.
Skilled in academic teaching.
Holds adequate diving certification.
Has indisputable research integrity.
The quality of the research can be proven by publications in leading international top 5% journals.
International research experience is an important advantage.
Has excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

The appointment is expected to start on June 1, 2022.
