Since 2016, we have focused our efforts on monitoring and protecting active nests of this species, where the next generation will develop and integrate into the existing population. The current protection/monitoring efforts are part of a collaborative effort between New Mexico State University and Belize Bird Conservancy. In addition, we will be installing motion activated cameras around nest sites, as well as temperature data loggers to monitor temperature fluctuations in the nest. Data on habitat characteristics, such as characteristics of nesting cavity as well as spatial characteristics of habitat, will also be collected at various stages of the nesting season. Volunteers are also expected to assist in record keeping of nests, data entry and inventory of existing equipment used in the field.
