The Group Mountain Ecosystems within the Research Unit Alpine Environments and Natural Hazards investigates how climate change and land use affects the diversity and functioning of alpine ecosystems and is offering from Mai/June – August/September (4 Months) an

Automatic insect monitoring systems using digital cameras and computer vision offer great potential to advance our understanding of insect declines. Cameras can track insects on images, making it easy to monitor insects and their biomass across environmental gradients in a standardized way. In a Pilot-project we test the DIOPSIS insect camera system along three elevational gradients in Switzerland, to explore how insect numbers, biomass and diversity are affected by climatic gradients. Moreover, results from Diopsis cameras will be compared to results from classical insect monitoring methods. Your task will be to install 10 Diopsis cameras in the field in the mountains (ranging from 1500m to almost 3000m) and monitor their functionality and correct settings. Depending on your interest and abilities, the intern project could also involve analysis of images and advancing the algorithms and pipelines. You will also help collecting samples from traditional insect traps that are installed next to the cameras.

We offer an inclusive environment in an enthusiastic and diverse team of ecologists, set amidst a stunning mountain environment. The internship takes place in Davos at the SLF, and we help in finding housing in Davos. Depending on interest and ability there is the possibility to work in collaboration with Michele Volpi from the Swiss Data Science Center for the analysis of the images.

          Insects are important agricultural pests that rely on their sensory system for mating and host plant selection. By exploring their sensory systems we can develop environmentally friendly control methods. Lobesia botrana is a small moth in the family tortricidae that causes economic damage to grapevines worldwide. The candidate will explore how L. botrana uses the sensory information provided by the host plant to determine oviposition and feeding suitability. The chemical and structural cues present on the plant surface of fruits and leaves will be analyzed and the behavioral and electrophysiological responses of the moths to these cues will be explored by means of laboratory, semi-field and field tests. In addition, the candidate will explore if chemical cues other than the sex pheromone are involved in mating behavior. Finally, the candidate will study how visual and morphological cues affect host plant selection and mating.      

Ph.D. candidate profile

The Ph.D. candidate should have a Master in Biological or Physical Sciences. Previous experience with insects is valuable but not essential. Background in electronics, programming and signal processing would be helpful. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

Academic requirements

  • Bachelor´s degree obtained in January 2014 or later
  • Undergraduate GPA of 6.5 or higher in a scale of 1-10
  • Masters degree completed or close to completion
  • At least 300 ECTS from Undergraduate and Master degrees
  • Should not have obtained a Ph.D. degree previously

Research Technician position on morphological novelties and insect evolution

The Almudi lab located at the Genetics, Microbiology & Statistics Department, at the University of Barcelona is offering one research assistant position to work in the mayFLYeye ERC-CoG-funded project.

Eligibility research technician
The research technician should have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, etc.) and a minimum of 1 year of related experience is required. Candidates must be organized, able to work well independently and in teams and have excellent communication skills. Previous experience with animal manipulation (rearing animal lines, injection protocols, etc.) and/or molecular biology and -omics techniques are highly recommended.

We are looking for two Advanced Research Assistants (one long term, and one 12 month maternity cover) to work as part of our team, focused on using sequencing approaches to study flying insects and their associated cobionts. The primary aspect of your role will be to run projects in the molecular lab including but not limited to high throughput DNA and RNA extractions, PCRs, evaluation and testing of new SOPs, and detailed tracking of sample management and processing. We often have new project ideas that require creativity and independent research to implement, and we are looking for a creative problem solver who takes initiative and has genuine interest in helping all lab projects succeed. You’ll be experienced handling large numbers (1000s) of samples, with careful attention to detail. You’ll have at least one year of full time lab experience with DNA and/or RNA, including extractions, measuring quality and quantity, PCR, troubleshooting, summarizing and presenting results to the lab team, and making proposals for next steps.
