Prácticas remuneradas trabajando con bonobos

Under the mentorship of Harvard professor Martin Surbeck, fellows will gain valuable fieldwork and applied conservation experience, including data and sample collection that will contribute to the scientific understanding of the bonobo ecology including food availability, prey species, other sympatric wildlife, climate, and the relevance of human impact. Other learning opportunities will include conducting social surveys and collecting many organic samples to support genetic, pathogen, diet, metabolomics, and isotope analyses of the bonobo ecosystem.

Along with the first-hand research data collection and analysis, fellows will also gain experience with other aspects of project management including coordinating field assistants and reporting back to the PI and camp administrator on data and fieldwork status updates.

Those individuals who would be the best fit for the fellowship may have a combination of the attributes below:

  • Undergraduate degree in biology or a related field
  • Previous fieldwork experience, preferably in remote areas of the tropics
  • Conversational competency in French and English
  • Proficient with email communication, MS Excel, and Word
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience working with an international team
  • Communicate clearly and regularly via remote connections with coordinator/director
  • Comfortable living and working in a context and culture potentially significantly different than your own
  • Willing and able to live away from developed areas, isolated and with minimal living conditions (no plumbing, electricity, or housing) in extremely remote locations
  • Experience with GPS, camera traps, and biological sample collection
  • Proficiency with Cybertracker, QGIS, BaseCamp/MapSource

About the Fellowship:

This fellowship will offer:

  • Unique opportunity to gain field experience in the central African rainforest with the world’s least known ape species
  • Fellows will receive rigorous training and gain proficiency in diverse research and scientific methods relevant for careers in applied conservation and ecological research
  • All expenses covered, including visa, roundtrip flights to Kinshasa (DRC), transport to/from the site, and lodging and food during the project
  • All necessary equipment to perform diverse sets of research
  • $500 monthly per diem to cover incidentals

The following will be the responsibility of the Fellow:

  • Health insurance that covers emergency repatriation and liability, including COVID-related illness

Urgente- (Prácticas/Voluntariado remunerado) Research Assistant position Ozouga Chimpanzee Project (OCP), Gabon

We still have ONE vacancy for a motivated Research Assistant (RA) to collect behavioral data on central chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) living in the Loango National Park, Gabon. The OCP is a long-term field site conducting research on many aspects of chimpanzee behaviour, health, and cognition (For more information see: https://en.ozouga.org/)


Responsibilities include:
The RA will receive an initial training of one week at the Comparative BioCognition Group, Institute of Cognitive Science (IKW) in Osnabrück, Germany, by members of the OCP on the data collection methods and health and safety protocols. After the initial training, the RA will travel to the Loango National Park in Gabon. The RA will be responsible for conducting daily focal animal follows on the habituated chimpanzees of the OCP. This entails following a focal chimpanzee all day long, observing and documenting aspects of their behaviour. The RA will also collect fecal and urine samples, demographic and nutritional information and potentially other data needed for specific projects (e.g., audio or video recordings). Assistance with phenology transects and camera trap maintenance will also be required. The RAs are locally supervised by the OCP field-site manager and remotely by a team of experts.


Qualifications include:

The RA should have a Bachelor/Master in Biology, Anthropology, Zoology and/or Psychology with a strong interest in behavioral ecology/animal behavior. Field experience and knowledge of behavioral data collection will be a strong advantage.

Living conditions are extremely basic. There is no running water, very limited phone coverage and internet access, and only basic solar power for electricity. Satellite phones are available in the event of an emergency. Team members live in wooden huts and the food is local and basic. Additionally, the challenging aspects of living in remote tropical conditions, coupled with the necessity of both living and collaborating with team members, underscore the importance of stress resilience, excellent social skills, and maintaining professionalism in the work environment. Working with the chimpanzees is also physically demanding, so excellent physical and psychological conditions are necessary. The RA needs to speak French AND English, and needs to be able to work independently after the training in the forest. Note that the OCP adheres strictly to gender equality and will not tolerate any form of sexual harassment.

Compensation and training:
We offer the initial training of about 1 week (depending on existing knowledge and experience) by experts from the OCP in Osnabrück, Germany. Afterwards we expect a tenure of 12 months in the Loango National Park. The research assistant receives free accommodation and a compensation of 200€ per month for living expenses etc and a contribution of 50€ towards health insurance costs. After the successful tenure, we reimburse return international flights from Düsseldorf to Libreville, as well as visa costs (to a max of 1000 €).

¿No sabes si hacer un doctorado? Mira qué te cuenta la primatóloga Mireia Olivé

Si estás estudiando biología u otros estudios superiores, en algún momento quizás te plantees continuarlos haciendo un doctorado. 

¿Vale la pena hacer un doctorado? ¿Cuánto tiempo y esfuerzo deberás dedicar al doctorado? 

Conoce de primera mano la experiencia de escribir una tesis y doctorarse con esta entrevista a la primatóloga Mireia Olivé. 

EL INTERÉS POR LA BIOLOGÍA Y PRIMATOLOGÍA

Mireia, gracias por dedicar tu tiempo para compartir tu experiencia. Empecemos por los inicios: ¿cuándo supiste que querías estudiar biología? ¿Por qué elegiste esta carrera y no otra?

La verdad es que la elección no fue nada fácil porque siempre me han gustado muchas cosas y me costó decidirme. Para escoger la carrera, uno de los criterios que seguí fue pensar qué campo me abriría más puertas, lo que me permitiría ser más interdisciplinar. Lo que también terminó de decantar la balanza fue la parte emocional: me motivaba mucho saber que, algún día, podría saber cosas que siempre me había preguntado (en el ámbito de los primates, especialmente).

¿Por qué hiciste un doctorado? ¿Tenías algún futuro profesional en mente, surgió la oportunidad sin tenerlo meditado…?

Es curioso que acabara haciendo el doctorado porque no lo había pensado nunca. Algunos compañeros de la Universidad tenían clarísimo que se dedicarían a hacer investigación, pero yo estaba participando en otros proyectos que no estaban relacionados con la investigación y no lo había tenido en cuenta. Me lo propuso el tutor de mi trabajo del Máster en Cognición y Evolución de Primates, y tras valorarlo mucho (y de saber que podría seguir compaginándolo con los otros proyectos) acepté la propuesta.

¿Sobre qué temática es el doctorado que hiciste? ¿Qué investigaciones llevaste a cabo?

Mi doctorado estudiaba la relación entre la jerarquía y el grooming en un grupo de macacos de Berbería (Macaca sylvanus). Para integrar estos dos conceptos y ver cómo interrelacionaban, la investigación tuvo varias vertientes:

  • Una primera, de tipo bibliográfico, sobre la jerarquía y el grooming.
  • Una segunda sobre los modelos computacionales y la simulación (pertenezco al GCAI –Grupo de Conducta Adaptativa e Interacción-, que estudia la conducta adaptativa y la psicología computacional).
  • Una tercera, empírica sobre el terreno, observando los individuos del grupo de macacos.

EL TRABAJO DE CAMPO

Hablemos ahora sobre la vertiente empírica: ¿en qué zona llevaste a cabo tus observaciones? 

La parte empírica fue un poco complicada de iniciar porque nos costaba encontrar un grupo que fuera suficientemente representativo, ya que tenía que tener un mínimo de individuos de cada género y clase de edad, y tenía que ser de una familia de primates determinada. Finalmente, y después de algunos intentos fallidos (ya habíamos comenzado la observación de un grupo pero la tuvimos que parar porque hubo problemas con los individuos), escogimos un grupo de un parque francés cerca de Poitiers que se llama La Vallée des Singes, donde el grupo de macacos de Berbería cumplía todos los requisitos que habíamos establecido. Además, el grupo estaba en condiciones de semilibertad, y esto nos ofrecía muchas ventajas respecto a otras opciones que habíamos considerado.

Así que tuviste que hacer parte de la investigación en el extranjero. ¿Cómo valoras la experiencia?

Fue una experiencia muy interesante que me permitió conocer a estudiantes, técnicos y profesionales del sector “animalier” (no se si animalístico es una buena traducción) y del campo de la primatología, ampliar el círculo de amigos y mejorar el nivel de lenguas extranjeras.

¿Era duro el trabajo de campo?

El trabajo de campo fue muy intenso, porque quise aprovechar mi estancia para recoger tantos datos como pudiera (incluso, pensando en posteriores investigaciones para desarrollar al finalizar el doctorado). Salir a observar a los animales es una tarea que requiere mucha constancia y dedicación: una vez establecida la dinámica de las observaciones hay que mantenerla en todo tipo de condiciones. Esto quiere decir que iba a hacer registros tanto si llovía, como si la temperatura era inferior a 4ºC, en días laborables y en fin de semana, y en cualquier momento del día. La parte empírica, sin embargo, fue la mejor de todo el estudio.

¿Pasaste miedo en algún momento?

Habitualmente las sesiones eran tranquilas, pero en dos ocasiones pasé bastante miedo. El lugar donde hacía las observaciones era directamente sobre el territorio de los macacos, una extensión de 3’3 hectáreas de bosque por donde los animales circulaban libremente. En momentos puntuales había personal del parque que pasaba a controlar que todo estuviera en orden, pero yo podía estar en la otra punta del territorio y, a menudo, no veía a nadie en todo el día. En el grupo había varias hembras juveniles, con muchas ganas de jugar y de ponerme a prueba.

Una de las veces en las que sufrí un poco fue cuando el grupo de las cuatro hembras más jóvenes me rodearon, se me acercaban y me estiraban la ropa (era una manera de jugar un poco agresiva). La situación era complicada porque en ese momento yo ya había sido más o menos aceptada por el grupo como observadora y me podía acercar bastante a los animales, pero si las asustaba para que me dejaran marchar no sólo me arriesgaba a perder esa confianza y, consecuentemente, la capacidad de observar sus conductas de cerca, sino también porque que los adultos las hubieran venido a ayudar (y los adultos tienen mucha fuerza y ​​unos colmillos muy largos) y me habrían atacado (no se lo hubieran pensado dos veces).

CONSEJOS PRÁCTICOS SOBRE EL DOCTORADO

La dedicación es muy grande, ¿es posible compaginar el doctorado con un trabajo? ¿Puedes dar una idea a futuros estudiantes de lo que supone la carga de trabajo?

Tanto si compaginas el doctorado con un trabajo como si haces la tesis de manera exclusiva, la carga es considerable y es necesaria mucha constancia para poder ir avanzando. Para mí era importante no dejar de trabajar e ir participando en otros proyectos que no eran de investigación, por lo que asumí que tardaría más en terminar el doctorado. Estar mentalizada era importante para poder seguir trabajando en todos los frentes abiertos.

En mi caso, durante la mayor parte del doctorado hice un horario laboral que me permitía estar en casa entre las 17h y las 18h, y entonces me ponía a trabajar (ya fuera leyendo artículos, estudiando, redactando o haciendo cálculos) hasta las 21h o las 22h, y los fines de semana dedicaba entre 4 y 6 horas diarias . Los amigos que trabajaban haciendo la tesis en la universidad destinaban unas 8 horas cada día, de lunes a viernes, aunque también dependía de la etapa en que se encontraran (la etapa final de redacción es bastante más intensa).

Pero también tiene su parte positiva, ¿no?

¡Por supuesto que tiene cosas buenas! Para empezar, investigas un tema que te apasiona y te intriga y en el que haces algún descubrimiento. Además aprendes de primera mano lo que significa hacer investigación y qué supone (organización, hipótesis, resultados, etc.).

También conoces a un montón de gente que comparte los mismos intereses y motivación que tú y estás a la última de todo lo que ocurre en el tu campo. Tanto a la última y descubriendo tantas cosas sobre el tema, que acabas siendo la que más sabe: ¡es tu tema!

¿Pensaste en dejarlo alguna vez? ¿Por qué?
 
Sí, como decía antes, es un proceso largo e intenso. Además, en investigación a menudo no salen los resultados que esperas, y hay que ir reconduciendo la situación, planteándose nuevas hipótesis o enfocándolo desde diferentes puntos de vista… En estos momentos hay que ser capaz de mirar un poco más allá: o bien hacia los inicios y ver desde donde salías y donde estás en ese momento, o bien intentar ver hacia dónde vas, lo que quieres acabar descubriendo…

Por eso es importante que te guste lo que investigas, porque sino es fácil no implicarse y acabar desistiendo.

¿Qué te animó a seguir?

Quiero añadir que, además de esta motivación personal, el apoyo de familia y amigos es muy importante: son los que te animan, te vuelven a animar y te siguen animando, y cuando estás en un momento bajo te convencen de que lo que haces vale la pena, y que hay que seguir trabajando.

¿Lo volverías a hacer?

Creo que sí, que volvería a hacer un doctorado. Eso sí, ahora, gracias a la experiencia, tanto el planteamiento de la tesis como el personal serían muy diferentes.

Para finalizar, ¿puedes dar alguna recomendación para personas que quieran hacer un doctorado?

Lo que les recomendaría es que, si pueden, cambien de universidad porque es muy interesante conocer otras maneras de trabajar y de enfocar la investigación.

También les diría que escojan un tema que realmente les motive: durante el doctorado hay momentos de desánimo, en que tienes ganas de mandarlo todo a paseo (es inevitable, porque es una tarea de esfuerzo continuo y bastante largo) pero si el tema te ilusiona, es más fácil encontrar energía para continuar.

Tu tesis suena muy interesante, ¿nos puedes facilitar un enlace a la publicación?

Una de las conclusiones de mi tesis ha sido la elaboración de unos indicadores que permiten conocer el estado de un grupo de macacos de Berbería, lo que puede facilitar las posibles intervenciones (reintroducción en el hábitat natural, migraciones de individuos…).

Are you thinking about a PhD? The experience of primatologist Mireia Olivé

If you are studying biology maybe you are thinking to continue working in a doctor's degree. Is it worth it? How much time and effort will you have to dedicate? Know firsthand the experience of writing a thesis and getting a doctor's degree with this interview with primatologist Mireia Olivé.

THE INTEREST IN PRIMATOLOGY

Mireia, thanks to dedicate your time to share your experience. Let's start from the beginning: when did you know you wanted to study biology? Why did you choose this degree and not another?

The thing is that the choice was not easy because I have always liked a lot of things and it was difficult to decide. To choose the degree, one of the criteria I took into account was that the field should open doors for a future projects (in a professional way), enabling me to be more interdisciplinary. What finally did tip the scales was the emotional part: it was really motivating to know that, someday, I might know things that I always wondered (in the field of primates, especially).

Why did you do a PhD? Did you have a professional future in mind, the opportunity arose without thinking about it..?

It’s funny that I really undertook a doctoral thesis because I had never thought about it. While some friends of mine had no doubts about conducting research, I was involved in other projects that weren’t related to research and I didn’t have in mind taking a PhD. Actually, it was a proposal of my academic mentor from the  Master’s degree in Cognition and Evolution of Primates I had already done. After considering it (and knowing that I could continue working in my other projects), I accepted.

On what topic was your thesis? What research did you carry out?

My thesis studied the relationship between hierarchy and grooming in a group of Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus). To integrate these two concepts and see how interrelated, the research was focused on several aspects:
  • First; bibliographic, regarding the hierarchy and grooming.
  • Second; on computer models and simulation (I belong to GCAI -Group of Adaptive Behaviour and Interaction-, which studies adaptive behaviour and computational psychology).
  • Third; empirical, observing individuals in a group of macaques.

WORKING IN THE FIELD

Let's talk about the empirical aspects: in what area did you take out your observations?

The empirical part was a bit difficult to start because we struggled to find a group that was representative enough, since it had to have a minimum of individuals of each gender and age class, and from a particular family of primates. Finally, after several failed attempts (we had already begun observing a group but we had to stop because there were problems with the animals), we chose a group of a French park near Poitiers called La Vallée des Singes, where the Barbary macaques group met all the requirements we had set. In addition, it was a semi-captivity group, which provided many advantages over other options we had already considered.

So you had to do some research abroad. How do you evaluate the experience?

It was a very interesting experience that allowed me to meet students, technicians and professionals of the “animalier” sector and in the primatology field, to expand the circle of friends and to improve my level of foreign languages

Working in the field was very hard?

The fieldwork was very intense, because I wanted to take advantage of my time collecting as much data as I could (even considering further research to develop at the end of the PhD). Going out to observe animals is a task that requires a lot of perseverance and dedication: once the dynamics is established, observations must be maintained in all conditions. This means it had to be done even if it rains; the temperature is below 4° C; on weekdays and on weekends, and at any time of day. The empirical part, however, was the best of the PhD.

Did you experienced fear at some time?
Usually the sessions were quiet, but twice went pretty scary. The place where the observations were made was directly on the territory of macaques, an extension of 3.3 hectares of forest where the animals were circulating freely. At peak times park staff checked that everything was in order, but I could be on the other side of the territory and I often did not see anyone all day. In the group there were several juvenile females, eager to play and challenging me.

Once, I was surrounded by the group of the four youngest females. They approached me and stretched my clothes. I was a bit scared (it was an aggressive way to play). The situation was complex, because at that time I had already been more or less accepted by the group as an observer and I could be quite close to animal. I frightened them to let me go, not only I risked to lose that confidence, and consequently the ability to observe their behavior closely, but at the same time, the group would have attacked me to help the youngest without hesitating (adults are very strong and have very long fangs).

TIPS ON PhD

Dedication is very big, is it possible to combine the PhD with a job? Can you give an idea to future students how much is the workload?

The workload is heavy, either combining the PhD with a job (which was my case) or doing the thesis exclusively, and perseverance to move forward is necessary. For me it was important not to stop working and continue participating in other projects that were not related to research, so I assumed it would take longer to finish my PhD. Being focused was important to continue working on all fronts.

In that time I got home from work between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., and then I began to work (either reading articles, studying, writing or doing calculations) until 9-10 p.m. and at weekends I spent between 4 and 6 hours a day. Friends, who worked doing exclusively the thesis at the University, spent about 8 hours every day, Monday through Friday, but this schedules also depended on the stage where they were (the final stage of drafting is far more intense).

But it also has its positive side, right?
Of course you have good times! First, you research a topic you are passionate about and you do some discoveries. In addition, you learn, firsthand, what it means to do research, what involves (organization, hypotheses, results).

You also know a lot of people who share the same interests and motivation, and you’re aware of everything happening in your field. You are so up to date and discovering so much about the subject that it ends up being you the one who knows the most: it’s your topic!

Did you ever think about quitting? Why?

Yes. As I said before, it is a long and intense process. In addition, research often do not turn out the results you expect, and you have to go redirecting the situation, raising new hypotheses or approaching it from different points of view. At that moment you have to be able to look a little further: either to the beginning and see where you were and where you are at the time, or trying to see where you go, what you want to end up discovering.
So this is why it is important that you like what you investigate, because it is easy not to get involved and giving up.

What encouraged you to go on?
I want to add that beyond this personal motivation, support from family and friends is very important: they are who cheer you up, who encourage you again and again and will continue to encourage you, and when you have hard times, they convince you that your work worths it, and that you  must continue working to go on.

Would you repeat the experience?
Yes, I think I would do a PhD again. However, thanks to the experience, I would look at the issue differently, both the thesis content and the personal approach.

Finally, can you give some tips to people who want to do a PhD?

I would suggest them to change to another University (different from the one where they have studied the Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree) because it is very interesting to know other ways to work and focus research.
In addition, it is important to choose a topic that really motivates you. During the thesis there are moments of discouragement, when you want to throw it all away (it is inevitable, because it is a task of continuous effort and quite long) but if the subject excites you, it is easier to find energy to continue.

Your thesis seems very interesting,  can you give us a link to the publication?
One of the conclusions of my thesis has been the development of indicators that provide insight into the status of a group of Barbary macaques, which may facilitate possible interventions (reintroduction in the natural habitat, migration of individuals).

Kokolopori Bonobo Research One Year Fellowship to begin late April 2024:

 

Kokolopori, DRC:

Under the mentorship of Harvard professor Martin Surbeck, fellows will gain valuable fieldwork and applied conservation experience, including data and sample collection that will contribute to the scientific understanding of the bonobo ecology including food availability, prey species, other sympatric wildlife, climate, and the relevance of human impact. Other learning opportunities will include conducting social surveys and collecting many organic samples to support genetic, pathogen, diet, metabolomics, and isotope analyses of the bonobo ecosystem.

Along with the first-hand research data collection and analysis, fellows will also gain experience with other aspects of project management including coordinating field assistants and reporting back to the PI and camp administrator on data and fieldwork status updates.

 

Those individuals who would be the best fit for the fellowship may have a combination of the attributes below:

      undergraduate degree in biology or a related field

      previous fieldwork experience, preferably in remote areas of the tropics

      conversational competency in French and English

      proficient with email communication, MS Excel, and Word

      good interpersonal and communication skills

      experience working with an international team

      communicate clearly and regularly via remote connections with coordinator/director

      comfortable living and working in a context and culture potentially significantly different than your own

      willing and able to live away from developed areas, isolated and with minimal living conditions (no plumbing, electricity, or housing) in extremely remote locations

      experience with GPS, camera traps, and biological sample collection

      proficiency with Cybertracker, QGIS, BaseCamp/MapSource  

 

Expectations of conduct for fellows: respectful to members of local communities and wildlife - honest and accountable communication with project management - no drug use (including alcohol) allowed in camp or during working hours - sexual and/or gender-based harassment of any type will not be tolerated - failure of any of these points will be grounds for immediate dismissal at your own expense

About the Fellowship:

This fellowship will offer:

unique opportunity to gain field experience in the central African rainforest with the world’s least known ape species

      fellows will receive rigorous training and gain proficiency in diverse research and scientific methods relevant for careers in applied conservation and ecological research

      all expenses covered, including visa, roundtrip flights to Kinshasa (DRC), transport to/from the site, and lodging and food during the project

      all necessary equipment to perform diverse sets of research

      $500 monthly per diem to cover incidentals

The following will be the responsibility of the Fellow:

      health insurance that covers emergency repatriation and liability, including COVID-related illness

      vaccinations required for entry into DRC prior to departure, and any medications recommended for remote field work, including malaria prophylaxis

      clothes, shoes, and personal field equipment (a suggested list of these items will be provided)
