Dos oportunidades para hacer el doctorado en Australia estudiando ADN de mamíferos amenazados

 We are currently looking for two enthusiastic PhD students to work on a

new project preventing extinctions of Australia’s threatened mammals
with DNA.

These PhD projects will be based at the University of Adelaide’s
Environment Institute and Australian Centre for Ancient DNA. They will
be part of a recent Linkage Project funded by the Australian Research
Council, involving several senior and postdoctoral scientists, and
conservation practitioners. The successful candidates will work closely
with this diverse and highly skilled group of researchers.

Background: Australia’s unique mammals have suffered the highest rate
of recent extinctions of any continent. Reversing further declines, and
averting new extinctions, requires more detailed understanding of past
distributions and preferred habitats. These PhD projects will use ancient
DNA extracted from sediment and bulk-bone deposits to reconstruct changes
in mammal and plant diversity across Australian landscapes through time.
Their significance is that they will establish historical distributions
and habitats of Australian threatened mammals at geographic scales and
spatial resolutions needed for evidence-based ecological restoration.

Position 1: Establishing
past mammals and their habitats using sedimentary DNA Ancient DNA
from sedimentary archives is now providing information on the former
distribution and diversity of life that was previously invisible
in the fossil record. This PhD project will leverage methodological
breakthroughs in sedimentary ancient DNA to provide a direct window into
how pre-European patterns of mammal and plant diversity once varied across
Australian landscapes.  Specifically, the successful PhD candidate will
use high throughput analysis of sediment and high performance computing to
generate inventories of pre- and post-European assemblages of Australian
native mammals and their vegetation communities at a geographic scale
never done before. This will deliver the very information conservation
organisations need to optimise future efforts to restore and safeguard
Australia’s most threatened mammals.  Supervision and mentoring: will
be provided by A/Prof. Damien Fordham, Dr Jamie Wood and A/Prof. Jeremy
Austin at the University of Adelaide’s Environment Institute and
Australian Centre for Ancient DNA. These supervisors and their labs are
international leaders in the fields of environmental genomics, ancient
DNA and biodiversity conservation. They will collaborate with staff
from Australia’s three largest non-profit conservation organisations:
Bush Heritage, World Wildlife Fund-Australia, and the Australian Wildlife
Conservancy.

Position 2: Quantifying losses of mammals at key conservation areas using
bulk bone metabarcoding Bulk bone metabarcoding is enabling effective
species identification of fragmentary bones from archaeological and
paleontological excavations. This project will establish past mammal
assemblies by applying these new ancient DNA techniques to highly
fragmented and morphologically indistinct late-Holocene aged fossil bones
collected from caves across Australia. Specifically, the successful
PhD candidate will use bulk bone metabarcoding and high performance
computing to generate inventories of pre- European assemblages of
Australian native mammals in priority conservation areas, spanning
broad climates and environments.  New scientific understandings will
allow current-day patterns of mammal diversity to be contextualised,
recovery targets for threatened species strengthened, reintroduction
programs optimised.  Supervision and mentoring: will be provided by
A/Prof. Damien Fordham, Dr Jamie Wood and Dr Liz Reed at the University
of Adelaide’s Environment Institute and Australian Centre for Ancient
DNA. These supervisors and their labs are international leaders in the
fields of environmental genomics, ancient DNA, biodiversity conservation
and paleoecology. They will collaborate closely with staff from the
Australian Museum and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, as well
key conservation organisations.

The project “Physiology, Life History, and the Pace of Life: Understanding the Role of Cryptobenthic Fishes in Coral Reef Ecosystems” is looking for two volunteer field assistants with the following qualifications:Current Passing Dive Medical Evaluation (April 2024 or more recent)
Current First Aid Certification
Current Advanced Resuscitation Certification
At least 60 hours of logged SCUBA dives. The station will likely ask to see your logbook.
A MERL-Recognized Diving Credential (ADAS Restricted Scientific Diver OR Recreational qualification equivalent to ISO 24801-3. Examples include PADI Divemaster, SSI Dive Guide, NAUI Assistant Instructor, NASE Divemaster, IDEA Europe Divemaster, etc.
Australian Driver’s License (Manual)
Ability to travel to Exmouth without needing to obtain an Australian visa

Successful applicants will work at the Minderoo Exmouth Research Lab (MERL) in Exmouth, WA alongside a PhD student from the University of Texas, USA.

Expectations:Successful applicants will stay at MERL for the full duration of the project and will assist in all research components, including cryptobenthic reef fish collections via SCUBA, fish identification and sample processing, basic aquarium work and fish care, oxygen consumption measurements using respirometry, and possibly otolith extraction and polishing.
Safe, conservative diving activity on all dives, including adhering to the dive plan and not exceeding specified depth and time limits.
A positive, respectful, collegial attitude and a willingness to help other members of the research team with whatever tasks come up.
Patience and flexibility, as fieldwork plans can change suddenly.

Bring your own dive equipment, including fins, wetsuit, dive computer, BCD, regulator, mask, and gloves. Tanks and weights will be provided.

As an Experimental Scientist you will be responsible for providing expert technical support in one or several areas of molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, genomics and field activities. The position will provide lab and field based experimental skills and act as a captain of data records and metadata curation.  We are currently seeking expressions of interest from PhD candidates to join the MAVE Lab at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia:


Project title

A changing Sea Country: establishing an ecological baseline of a key marine predator in Jervis Bay to enable detection of future climate change effects


Research area and project description

Climate change is expected to reshape the distribution and population dynamics of various species within their ecosystems. In the case of key predators such as dolphins, this can cause cascading effects throughout the entire system. Despite these implications, many species and populations lack the fundamental ecological data to assess the effects of climate change on dolphins ranging patterns and population dynamics. The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) population in Jervis Bay, NSW, is such an example, as no targeted research has been done here since 1998. Jervis Bay is home to a diverse marine ecosystem, and bottlenose dolphins are a key part of this biodiversity. The bay provides a critical habitat for these dolphins, offering them a place to hunt, breed, and raise their young. Bottlenose dolphins are a major draw for tourism in Jervis Bay, as the opportunity to observe these dolphins in their natural habitat attracts many visitors. Dolphin-watching tours are particularly popular, making these dolphins a significant part of the region’s ecotourism industry. Overall, bottlenose dolphins in Jervis Bay are vital for ecological, economic, and scientific reasons, making their protection and study important for the region. Nevertheless, this population has not been studied for more than 20 years. This project will address this gap by investigating abundance, distribution, behaviour and habitat use of bottlenose dolphins in Jervis Bay, thus providing a baseline against which to measure future changes.

Fieldwork will require long hours in the field, including work outside the traditional Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm hours.


While the general project direction is set out as described above, PhD candidates will have opportunities to shape their projects together with supervisors to match their skills and interests. Both domestic and international students are welcome to express their interest. Applicants with a MSc degree and/or first-author publication are especially encouraged to apply.


Required qualifications: 

·       Applicants will need to hold a 1st  or high 2nd class Honours or equivalent in biology, ecology or a related field to be competitive for a University Postgraduate Award (UPA)

·       strong analytical and coding/programming experience in R or similar

·       excellent verbal and written communication skills

·       the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team


Desirable qualifications:

·       candidates should be well-read in biological literature, especially pertaining to marine ecology and climate change

·       peer-reviewed publications

·       field experience in doing boat surveys, flying drones, and using photo-ID methods

·       Coxswain license

·       Remote Pilot License


The project is a collaboration between the Marine Vertebrate Ecology Lab at the University of Wollongong (New South Whales) and the Cetacean Behaviour, Ecology and Evolution Lab at Flinders University (South Australia). The student will be enrolled at the University of Wollongong and be based at Wollongong. They will be supervised by Dr Katharina J Peters and A/Prof Guido J Parra.

Strong candidates will be invited to apply through the official University of Wollongong admissions process to compete for either a domestic or international scholarship, which pays an indexed stipend of $34,000 p.a. tax free (2024 rate) and covers tuition fees charged by the university for up to 3.5 years. The closing date for these scholarships is 3rd October 2024. If successful, the selected applicant will start in February 2025.
