About Us:

Save the Elephants (STE) is a non-profit organization committed to the conservation of African elephants and their habitats, conducting research to better understand their behaviour and ecology, and developing innovative strategies to protect them from threats such as poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and habitat destruction.

The Role:

The Coexistence Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and implementing human-elephant coexistence (HEC) activities in Samburu and Isiolo counties. The officer will work closely with community members, government agencies, and other stakeholders. You will be based at the Save the Elephants camp in Samburu National Reserve, and report to the Chief Operating Officer with technical input from the Coexistence Director and the Director of Field Operations.

Responsibilities:Conduct regular field visits to identify areas and nature of human elephant conflict in Samburu and Isiolo counties;
Work with communities in these HEC hotspots to identify and implement coexistence toolbox solutions;
Develop and/or update community awareness and coexistence activities in Samburu;
Coordinate with STE’s Rapid Response Units to identify conflict hotspots and recommend toolbox solutions;
Collect coexistence data, monitor and prepare reports and recommendations on implemented toolbox activities;
Assess community proposals for toolbox trials/ implementation and approve grants through a new micro-grants scheme;
Collaborate with the research team to collect data, monitor human-elephant interactions, and contribute to coexistence research;
Facilitate meetings and training to promote community understanding of elephant behaviour, and use of STE’s Coexistence Toolbox;
Liaise with national government (and its relevant ministries), local government and NGOs on strategies to minimize conflicts, especially regarding water resources;
Regularly update and consult with the Director of Operations on ground-level activities and progress.

Who You Are:You have at least three years of professional experience in community engagement in healthcare, education, or conservation.
You hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Natural or Social Sciences, or have substantial relevant experience.
You are fluent in English and Kiswahili; knowledge of Maa is a plus.
You possess strong data collection and analytical skills.
You have a deep understanding of community dynamics and conservation strategies.
You are capable of managing complex projects in challenging environments and are self-motivated with a professional demeanor.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Project Coordinator & Research Expert Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS) was founded in 1995 by Bala Amarasekaran together with the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL). Everything TCS does starts with the chimps and transitions into wildlife conservation, research, climate change mitigation, advocacy, law enforcement, youth and women empowerment, community outreach, eco-tourism, environmental education and livelihood support initiatives. Previous studies have recognized the Outamba-Kilimi-Madina-Oula (OKMO) transboundary landscape in Guinea and Sierra Leone as a hotspot for endangered species such as the western chimpanzee (CR), African forest elephant (CR), hooded vulture (CR), giant ground pangolin (EN) and flora species such as Nymphoides guineensis (EN) and the endemic to Guinea Dilophotriche occidentalis (VU).The present 1 year project supports ongoing conservation initiatives (EU-Funded OKKPS PAPFor project) that were born out of the government will in both countries. WCF and TCS collaborate together on this project, with WCF as main applicant and TCS as co-applicant. In addition to support the creation process of the Penselli-Soyah-Sabouyah National Park in Guinea, this project aims to enhance habitat regeneration, conservation, and biodiversity in the Outamba-Kilimi-Madina-Oula trans boundary landscape of Guinea and Sierra Leone. In order to develop and coordinate the operational management of the forest landscape complex of OKMO, the project is recruiting a Project Coordinator in Sierra Leone, under funding obtained from the WABiLED, and the mandate given by Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS) and the Government of Sierra Leone.

OBJECTIVE
The Project Coordinator & Research Expert will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the implementation of all project activities (community work, research, education, finance and logistics) to improve the management of the Outamba-Kilimi-Kuru Hills landscape in Sierra Leone.

THE TEAM The Project Coordinator & Research Expert will work closely with TCS Outreach staff, staff on the current EU-funded OKKPS PAPFor project incluiding staff from WCF, these includeTCS: Conservation Manager, Field Manager, Assistant Field Manager, Research Manager
OKKPS SL: Community Conservation Manager, Logistics and Finance team, GIS Officer, Community Field Officers, Ecoguards, NPAA Guards
OKKPS Guinea: WCF Project Manager, WCF Special Projects Manager, WCF Financial Director, Ecoguards, OGPR Guards

MAIN ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Contribute to the development of the OKMO project’s strategies in Sierra Leone
 Coordinate a wildlife survey using systematic linear transects and camera traps to gain information and confirm the importance of the conservation value of the zone. WCF and TCS will carry two complementary, standardized, and harmonized methods of wildlife monitoring within the OKMO landscape.
 To enhance law enforcement in the landscape using the implementation of monthly surveillance and anti-trafficking patrols by community ecoguards in collaboration with the national authorities (NPAA in Sierra Leone).
 Plan the effective management of wildfires in the landscape.
 Promote forest landscape restoration through Natural Ecological Regeneration (NER) approach with a conditional adaptation of the Moyen Bafing National Park (MBNP) a model developed by WCF in Guinea.  Design and implement different outreach activities that help to create awareness for the local villages, including radio broadcasts, focus groups conducting regular awareness sessions.
 Support the local governance with the involvement of all socio-professional structures and Committees.
 Ensure the supervision of all socio-economic studies and the diagnosis of the local communities’ resilience to climate changes.
 Ensure good communication between the project and the representatives of local communities.
 Support the data collect and the monitoring and evaluation of activities related to community development and involvement in Sierra Leone.
 Support the writing of field reports following a standard template;
 Support the development of competitively strong proposals and concept notes in coordination with the development team.  Ensure the synergy between the actions of her/his program and the other programs of the OKKPS project;
 Regularly exchange with colleagues from other WCF and TCS projects and bring and share her/his expertise.
 Contribute technically to the preparation and organization of office activities: oral presentations, government and community-based meetings, consolidation of the terms of references before validation by the hierarchy.
 Support the writing and publication of the OKKPS project’s results in Sierra Leone;
 Help with the writing of field and meeting reports and make recommendations.
 Write monthly and quarterly reports of activities and submit them to the hierarchy on time.
 Write articles to be posted online on specific Media.
 Communicate with her/his immediate supervisor.
 Ensure the supervision and the quality of the terms of references, the production and monitoring of budgets, and the writing of activity reports.
 Regularly produce activity reports related to her/his program and share results with her/his immediate supervisor.
 Assist in forest landscape restoration through a Natural Ecological Regeneration (NER) approach with a conditional adaptation of the Moyen Bafing National Park (MBNP) model developed by WCF in Guinea.
 Working closely with 26 project ecoguards, subdivided into field teams, to patrol across the OKMO landscape in Sierra Leone;
 Working closely with rangers from the National Protected Area Authority, and assigning rangers to the ecoguard field teams, to jointly patrol across the landscape in Sierra Leone.  Providing regular training for all ecoguards and rangers patrolling in the landscape on the use of SMART, GPS devices, camera traps, recces, and other survey design methods.
 Planning different research surveys in collaboration with the WCF team involving the collection of human and wildlife data within the landscape;
 Providing law enforcement training to all ecoguards and rangers in collaboration with the National Protection Area Authority (NPAA) to ensure the conservation of the landscape.  Planning joint field missions with WCF to undertake joint patrols in both Guinea and Sierra Leone with all ecoguards and rangers assigned to the project.
 Inputting research and biomonitoring data into suitable software to facilitate analysis;  Analyzing research and biomonitoring data and building the capacity of other team members to do the same.
 Working closely with the GIS officer to extract and report on data-driven conclusions.  Inspecting sites to ascertain the appropriateness of existing conditions.
 Conferring with project beneficiaries and support staff to evaluate uptake, pitfalls, and areas necessitating expansion.
 Working closely with the Logistics Officer to ensure procurement activities and logistics procedures for purchasing, inventory, and equipment management are implemented and adhered to.
 Revising and creating novel implementations that cover shortfalls in extant initiatives.

EXPERIENCES AND SKILLS
Qualification–Masters / Ph.D in science or a university degree in Rural Development / Sociology / Agronomy / Conservation or any other similar field;
At least 3 years of professional experience in rural sociology, rural development, participative mapping, surveys, structuring of local communities;
At least 2 years of experience in the management of natural resources involving local communities within a national or international NGO;
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet and medias (social network, websites, site web, etc.).PROFILE / DESIRED SKILLS
Have strong listening and communication skills;
Have good human relation skills and team spirit;
Have excellent skills for synthesis, and for written and oral expression; Be able to guarantee the confidentiality and discretion and be able to represent the NGO at the local level;

In all her/his activities, she/he must be proactive, meaning that she/he must suggest improvements and adaptations. At the Gelnhausen site, the renowned Senckenberg Research Institute is located in a Barbarossa town with historic charm in the region of Frankfurt.

The Department of River Ecology and Conservation at Senckenberg in cooperation with the Faculty of Biology at the University of Duisburg-Essen jointly invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (full time; 2 years with option for extension)

We are looking for an enthusiastic ecologist (m/f/d) with a background in community ecology, macroecology, metacommunities, and/or analysis of ecological time series. The applicant should have a strong track record of scientific publications.

The position is partly embedded in two large EU funded projects, namely the eLTER PLUS project: European Long-Term Ecosystem, critical zone and socio-ecological Research Infrastructure PLUS (https://elter-ri.eu/elter-plus) and the newly funded MARCO-BOLO project: MARine COastal BiOdiversity Long-term Observations. Both projects provide access to a wide range of long-term biodiversity and environmental data and a fantastic opportunity to become part of European networks of established researchers, postdocs, and graduate students working with long-term monitoring data.

The postdoc will investigate trends in ecological communities over time and space, and identify drivers of ecological variation. We can provide access to large-scale and long-term biodiversity and environmental datasets covering various terrestrial, freshwater and marine taxa groups and accompanied environmental data depending on candidate interests. We encourage applications from ecologists with backgrounds in terrestrial or freshwater systems.

Your tasks:
  • Analyzing biodiversity time series and accompanied environmental data to elucidate temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their drivers. Contribute to the research of the eLTER PLUS and MARCO-BOLO projects and conduct research on global change impacts on biodiversity within the framework of other projects in the department (i.e. restoration ecology, multiple stressor analyses, long-term ecological research).

At the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED), University of Amsterdam, we seek to appoint an early career assistant professor for a tenure track in the area of Evolutionary Ecology in rapidly changing environments.

At IBED, we investigate how species relationships determine the structure and stability of biological communities, and how the integrity of these communities is influenced or compromised by processes such as species extinction, the introduction of non-native invaders, and the growth of harmful species. Within EPB, our research comprises fundamental and applied investigations at the level of individual variation, population genetics and community dynamics, to understand the process of speciation, the evolution of resistance, the evolution of endangered and invasive species, and evolution in the face of climate change. Specifically, we are working on evolutionary questions related to plant communities, plant-herbivore, herbivore-herbivore, predator-herbivore and host-pathogen interactions, both within and between species.

We are looking for candidates that can complement the research program of the department of Evolutionary and Population Biology (EPB, seehttps://ibed.uva.nl/content/research-departments/epb/epb.html) at IBED, that covers a broad range of topics related to the eco-evolutionary dynamics of species interactions in challenging environments. The ideal candidate will also strengthen collaborations between existing research lines within EPB as well as within IBED, and link fundamental research on evolutionary ecology with applied areas such as (urban) planning, nature conservation or pest management and values public engagement and outreach.

The Insect Biome Atlas (www.insectbiomeatlas.org) at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (www.nrm.se) is advertising two postdoc positions. IBA is a five-year international project aimed at characterizing the diversity of insects in Sweden and Madagascar. The project uses metabarcoding of
thousands of Malaise trap and soil samples to study the size, origins, structure and function of the insect biomes and associated microbiomes.

We are looking for:

1) An applied *statistician / quantitative ecologist* with a keen interest in ecology, to work on joint species distribution models, community structure and species richness estimators using large datasets of
insect community composition.

2) A *community ecologist* with a firm grip on quantitative methods, to work on phenological patterns of insect species and address questions related to spatial variation in ecosystem functions.

The postdocs will have access to unprecedented datasets on insect community composition compiled through the metabarcoding of >8000 insect community samples collected over 12 months sampling in Sweden and Madagascar. The positions will be associated with the Swedish Museum of Natural History, in close collaboration with Tomas Roslin at SLU Uppsala and Ayco Tack at Stockholm University.

A position for a Postdoctoral Researcher is available to work on the project "Does competition really structure ant communities in tropical forest canopies?"

A highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher is sought to join a project that aims to explore the relative contribution of biotic (interspecies competition, forest structure) and abiotic effects (climate) on the
structuring of canopy ant communities in tropical rain forests. The successful candidate will co-design, and conduct field surveys, and experimental transplants of ant colonies across different forest systems and between dominant species territories in New Guinea, a region with globally high insect and plant diversity. In addition to innovative manipulations of species composition, the project will include functional and phylogenetic measures of ant diversity, and behavioural and thermal-tolerance experiments. He/she will have opportunities to develop the project, as well as to build upon existing plot-based datasets on the ants living in trees. Duties will include conducting and supervising the field work in Papua New Guinea, and working in our laboratory in the Czech Republic.

The successful applicant will join the Ant Research Group (http://antscience.com/) at the Institute of Entomology, Biology Centre CAS, Czech Republic, under the leadership of Dr. Petr Klimes. The research facility is in Ceske Budejovice, a charming historical city in the south of the country, within easy reach of Prague and Vienna. The laboratory is a dynamic, multinational group studying ant ecology. It is embedded within the Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology of Prof. Vojtech Novotny (the head), a world-class centre for tropical ecology research that publish in leading journals (e.g. Ecology Letters, Ecography, Science). The applicant will also collaborate with New Guinea Binatang Research Centre and the Laboratory of Behavioural Ecology at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz.

The deadline for applications is January 15th 2021, with expected start date of April 1st 2021 (negotiable). The successful applicant will receive the full time employment with salary CZK 40,000 per month (approx. EUR 1500 pre-tax). Required
  • A PhD degree in ecology or a related field.

The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation project "An experimental assessment of how trophic interaction modifications affect community stability and predictability."

Understanding and predicting the dynamics of ecological communities is challenging for all but the simplest communities. Even well-studied systems sometimes display unforeseen dynamics and sudden changes, which may be so unexpected that they can only be described as “ecological surprises”. One reason for these surprises lies in the multitude of indirect effects that arise in complex communities. Such indirect effects occur whenever species interact in more than pairs, which is the rule for most ecological communities. Indirect effects can be both density- and trait-mediated, and we currently do not have a good understanding of how they affect the stability and predictability of ecological communities.

We will develop a new experimental system – a tritrophic community of protists in a flow-through system – to collect long-term, high-frequency time series of community dynamics to which community models can be fitted. At the same time, we will estimate interactions strengths from short-term experiments (functional responses) and parameterize community models. Trophic interaction modifications and strengths from both approaches will be compared to elucidate differences in time scales and their ability to predict out-of-sample dynamics. Furthermore, we will test hypotheses regarding the long-term stability of the food webs based on the distribution of interaction strengths observed.

The project will be embedded in the Biotic responses to environmental change research group led by Dr. Frank Pennekamp in the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies at the University of Zurich. Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, a diverse and interactive scientific atmosphere, and an international, largely English-speaking working environment is provided. The modeling part will be supported by Prof. Jordi Bascompte (University of Zurich) and Louis-Félix Bersier (University of Fribourg). Opportunities for professional development, e.g. in project management, leadership, mentoring, teaching and grant writing, are available and encouraged.

We are looking for a motivated candidate to apply for a PhD scholarship from the regional call “Severo Ochoa” in Asturias to join our recently funded project “Effects of community assembly processes for trophic network structures in the high arctic: Implications for understanding the ecological consequences of climate change”. The student would be registered at University of Oviedo, Asturias, and based at the Mixed Research Unit for Biodiversity (UMIB, https://www.unioviedo.es/UMIB/). The project will use existing data on vascular plants, arthropods and vertebrates from high arctic Greenland to evaluate the consequences of local and regional community assembly processes on the structure of trophic interactions, and interpret the results from a climate change perspective. The work will be primarily laboratory and data driven, but with opportunities for some additional field work during the PhD period. The project is a collaboration between scientists in CSIC, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Stockholm University. The project is an international collaboration and good communication skills in English will be required. Good GIS and R skills will be a benefit. We are looking for students with at least an 6.5 grade point average, or equivalent in terms of foreign candidates. Citizens from all EU countries are eligible for this funding, as well as citizens from non-EU countries as long as they hold a Spanish foreign identity number (NIE) at the time of application. All foreign applicants need to hold a degree that allow them access to PhD studies in their home country at the time of application.

Applications are invited for a PhD position to join the department of Plant Ecology in the Research Center of Desertification (CIDE) in Valencia, Spain 

The successful candidate will work on a project investigating the
ecological and evolutionary implications of nutrient transfer among
plants as a mechanism of cooperation in arid environments. The project
will evaluate nutrient storage in plants after precipitation pulses,
and its re-distribution among neighbors when soil water and nutrients are
limited. The PhD will combine field work monitoring of plants phenology
and fitness, temporal dynamics of the use of nutrients by plants,
water use efficiency and seed production with stable isotope analyses
to quantify nutrient transfer among plants and local adaptation of plant
populations to the community in which they live.

The applicant will be encouraged to propose her/his own ideas and
research interests within this conceptual framework, and in this sense,
the candidate is expected to be highly motivated, and has curiosity and
leadership skills in order to propose ideas independently.

The Project will involve fieldwork in gypsum plant communities in south
Alicante combined with greenhouse experiments in Moncada (Valencia)
(Spain), therefore, it is required to have a driving license. Although the
framework of the PhD in mainly plant community ecology, expertise/interest
in eco-physiological aspects (water use efficiency, nutrient cycling in
plants) will be taken into account.

We are seeking a post doc to analyse extensive ecological datasets. The
successful candidate will take part in developing the specific
research questions, and in linking spatial and temporal data on the
abundance and distribution of species and on community composition
to data on habitat structure, population harvesting, fragmentation,
land use and/or weather. Examples of questions of interest include the
effect of environmental change on biodiversity in different habitats,
on the spread of pests, disease, and invasive species, on the threat
status of endangered species, and on potential mismatches in phenology
among interacting species. The data and research questions concern both
aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The focus of the specific research
questions can be modified in accordance with the background and interests
of the candidate.

The successful applicant should have completed a PhD in ecology
or a related field, and have a strong background in statistics,
spatial statistics, and/or GIS. We seek candidates with excellent
written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to conceive,
execute and complete research projects, and to think independently and

analyzing long-term ecological data and in statistical analyses within

The methodological work focuses on the development of Hierarchical
Modelling of Species Communities (HMSC) and hierarchical multivariate
Gaussian processes. HMSC is a joint species distribution modelling
framework that can be used for the statistical analysis of data on
species occurrence, environmental covariates, functional traits and
phylogenetic relationships. HMSC can be applied to hierarchical, spatial
and temporal study designs, and it applies to many kinds of response data
(presence/absence, counts, etc.). Gaussian processes are a flexible
and versatile modeling approach, and are rapidly spreading through
statistical ecology as tools for species distribution and population
dynamics modeling. Gaussian processes are used to model spatial and
spatiotemporal heterogeneity in data and describe species responses to
their environment in a nonparametric manner.

The successful applicant should have doctoral degree in ecology,
statistic or other relevant field and will have experience in the
development and application of Bayesian methods for computationally
challenging problems. A successful candidate will also have experience
in scientific computing. Prior experience in ecology is not necessary,

2 proyectos de master ecoagricológicos en Suiza

Land-use change, loss and fragmentation of semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes threaten crop pollination and biological pest control services provided by insects. Semi-naturals habitats and specific mass-flowering and pest hosting crops provide food resources to pollinators and pest natural enemies. However, the spatio-temporal availability of these resources may either facilitate or compete with the pollination or control of pest in a focal crop. We investigate how the fragmentation and the spatio-temporal availability of resources affect the distribution of beneficial insects and its consequences on related ecosystem services.

Objectives:
– One student will focus on pollinators and pollination. Another student will focus on pest enemies and biological control
– Map the food resources availability in agricultural landscapes
– Monitor pollinators or pest enemies in resource contrasting landscapes
– Conduct experiment to measure crop pollination or biological control

Postdoc in Community Ecology (USA)

A full-time, two-year, NSF funded Post Doctoral Fellow position in Community Ecology is available in the Siepielski Laboratory housed in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Arkansas (Position # 15781). The position is available for one year (anticipated start is January 2016, although this is flexible), with possibility of extension for one additional year based on satisfactory performance. The applicant will explore how niche and neutral processes may vary along a latitudinal gradient adopting theoretical, observational and experimental approaches.

Summary of job duties: The applicant will conduct field, laboratory and theoretical studies aimed at understanding the contributions of niche and neutral processes in shaping community structure of a diverse damselfly (Odonata) assemblage. The applicant is also expected to help oversee daily operations in the lab, organize field studies, prepare reports and manuscripts and present results at scientific conferences. The applicant will also be strongly encouraged to develop his/her own projects under the purview of the grant.

Minimum requirements: Ph.D. in Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology or related field.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary community ecology theory, mathematical modelling, experience managing large complex field experiments and experience programming in R. Volunteer Field Assistant in Community Ecology - Berlin, Germany

We are searching for an excited, motivated and hard-working individual to
assist with field work in the project “MetacommuniTree - Land-use effects on
patterns and processes in decomposer metacommunities in tree holes”. The
project is part of the Biodiversity Exploratories
(http://www.biodiversity-exploratories.de/1/home/) and the project is based
at Freie Universität in Berlin. We will be mapping and collecting samples
from water-filled tree holes in three different regions of Germany –
Schorfheide-Chorin, Hainich and Schwäbische Alb. Working conditions will
require an individual who will not mind or preferably enjoy working
outdoors, in possibly inclement weather. The candidate should have an
interest in ecological research.

This is a full-time unpaid internship position however travel for field work
will be covered. Ideally work will begin on the final week of April and last
approximately three months. You will gain knowledge in various sampling
techniques, use of equipment and gain valuable research experience.
Additionally you will have the opportunity to meet with other researchers.

Ecology Postdoctoral Position in Jonathan Levine’s group at ETH Zurich

A two year postdoctoral position in ecology is available in the research
group of Jonathan Levine at ETH Zurich, with a flexible 2014 start date. In
collaboration with Levine, the successful candidate will develop a project
combining empirical and theoretical approaches to explore questions in plant
population and community ecology.  The research focus is flexible and those
with plant, non-plant, or theoretical backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Research in the Levine group focuses on three general problems: (1) the
maintenance of species diversity in communities, (2) the determinants of the
success and impacts of biological invasions, and (3) plant community
responses to climate change.  Our coexistence projects explore how
individual variation, community drift, plant traits, and phylogeny influence
the outcome of competitive interactions.  Our invasions projects explore the
role of landscape patchiness, rapid evolution, and genetic variation in
influencing invasion success. Our climate change projects ask how changing
competitor identity influences plant species response to warmer climates,
and how phenological shifts with climate change alter population
trajectories and opportunities for coexistence.  All projects combine
empirical approaches with mathematical theory to achieve their aims.

Ph.D.-position available in Community Ecology (Germany)


We offer an additional fully-funded Ph.D. position (TVL E13 65%, ~€1400/month) available for all students (EU and International) within the project “Metacommunity genetics in a plant-aphid system” funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) at the Technische Universität München (TUM) and in collaboration with the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU). Candidates are required to have a M.Sc./Diploma in Biology or a related subject with appropriate specialisation. We expect the candidates to have good communication skills and the ability to work in a team. The ability to read, speak and write in English are essential requirements, knowledge of German is beneficial.

This project will investigate the factors that drive metacommunity dynamics in a plant-aphid system, involving tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) and its specialised aphid species, with focus on genetic and chemical variation in the plants. The work will involve local field surveys during the summer months and experimental work in the greenhouse throughout the year. All applicants should have a strong interest in community ecology and ecological genetics (sequencing and fragment analysis), and should have taken relevant courses in these subjects. Other relevant skills include experience with fieldwork, ecological experiments, molecular lab work, bioinformatics and statistical packages such as R. A clean driving license is essential.

The successful applicant will be based in the Terrestrial Ecology Group at TUM, Freising (Dr Zytynska and Prof. Weisser). Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship in Community Ecology at the University of Alabama

The Howeth Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University
of Alabama invites applications for a Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship
in community ecology beginning Fall 2013. A highly motivated student
is sought to collaborate on a project which aims to understand how
metacommunity dynamics may affect the establishment, spread, and impact of
non-native species, using freshwater zooplankton communities as a model
system. The research will include observational studies of zooplankton
communities in reservoirs across the United States, mesocosm experiments
at the University of Alabama Tanglewood Biological Station, and population
genetic/genomic analyses. Requirements: M.S. in Ecology and Evolution
or related field with preference for candidates who have a background
in freshwater ecosystems, experimental ecology, and/or evolutionary
ecology. Interested students should send an e-mail to Dr. Jennifer Howeth
