About the role
Embedded within the Vertebrates Division, the Curator / Senior Curator of Fishes will be developing expertise (Curator) or a recognised expert (Senior Curator) in their field of collections-based science and will demonstrate relevant scientific scholarship (e.g., taxonomy, systematics, evolution).
The post holder will be responsible for our world-class ichthyological collection, ensuring best practice in collections care, and providing access to research, teaching, and exhibitions. The NHM Fish Collection is based in South Kensington, although the Senior Curator of Fishes will be expected to work closely with NHM staff across sites when required (e.g. at our new Science and Digitisation Centre at the Thames Valley Science Park once open). About you
Qualifications

• Minimum 1-2 years of collections management experience, and relevant qualification e.g. zoology, evolution, biodiversity.

Skills and experience required for the role

• Knowledge and experience of (ichthyological) collections management, demonstrating the care and development of a collection via the successful delivery of curatorial projects.
• Demonstrable practical experience of collections information systems (e.g. Specify, EMu) for core collections data management processes, e.g. object tracking, registrations, loans (essential).

Fossil Reptiles Curator.

Embedded within the Vertebrates & Anthropology Curatorial Division, this is an important role in a world-renowned institution with a strong scientific mission and public profile.

The successful applicant will join a large science group composed of approximately 300 scientists, in an institution that houses some of the largest, most significant scientific collections in the world. The Museum is also home to an internationally important natural history library, a suite of advanced analytical and imaging facilities, and offers the opportunity to communicate science to national and international audiences.

The Curator will be responsible for acquiring, curating and making specimens within their area of responsibility in Fossil Reptiles available to facilitate research, teaching, and exhibitions. These collections are frequently accessed by internal and external researchers and are heavily used for the NHM’s public engagement activities, including permanent exhibitions, temporary and touring exhibitions, and outreach events for the general public and media.

Applications are open to candidates in the field of vertebrate palaeontology, with particular expertise in an area relevant to fossil reptiles.

About you

• You should possess both expertise in the anatomy and taxonomy of fossil reptiles and/or amphibians and experience of working with museum collections
• A strong knowledge and/or experience of databases or information management systems for museum collections would be highly desirable as would the ability to work with datasets.
• A postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc) relevant to vertebrate palaeontology is required for this post.
• You should have experience of successful delivery of projects as a team member and be competent with relevant IT software such as Microsoft Word, Excel etc.

Fish Curator

Embedded within the Vertebrate Collections Division, the Senior Curator in Charge (SCiC) of Fish will lead and manage a curatorial team (currently two full-time collections managers) ensuring best practice in collections care and providing a world-class collection of natural history specimens in Ichthyology. Fish specimens are to be acquired, curated and used and made available to facilitate research, teaching, training, reference and exhibitions. An expert in their field of collections-based science, the SCiC of Fish will demonstrate a high level of scientific scholarship (e.g., systematics, evolution, organismal biology). They will conduct and support collections-based research and attempt to secure external funding for that purpose. The SCiC of Fish will work with other SCiCs across the Vertebrates Division, and will line manage other Curators and Senior Curators within the Division. The SCiC of Fish is in turn line managed by and is expected to support the Principal Curator in Charge of Vertebrates.

The NHM Fish Collection is based at South Kensington, though the SCiC of Fish will be expected to work closely also with NHM staff at Tring and in the near future Harwell. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and integrate ichthyological curation and collections-based research in one of the World’s largest and most important fish collections.

About you

• Qualifications - Relevant higher qualification (MSc or relevant postgraduate experience is essential, a PhD is desirable), or equivalent experience, with an emphasis on taxonomy or systematics and the use of natural history collections in science.

Project Description:


Funded by the Emmy Noether Programme of the DFG, the MultiplEye Lab is investigating the function and evolution of many-eyed visual systems in animals. The project uses selected model organisms, including spiders, molluscs and echinoderms, to explore the fundamental principles that govern how and why these unusual visual systems arise. Using a combination of comparative morphology, neuroethology, developmental and molecular biology, we want to understand how animals collect and combine multiple streams of information simultaneously, how this relates to their ecology, and what shapes the evolution of their visual systems. This position will use synchrotron scans and empirical data to explore how spiders and molluscs sample the visual environment, and how changes to morphology are likely to affect visual function.


Responsibilities:
Scientific research into the function and evolution of vision in selected organisms

3D reconstruction of the visual system (including in spiders and chitons), or parts thereof, using specialist software (Amira, VG Studio)

Using these models to predict how visual stimuli are received and processed, using custom analytical tools (Python)

Developing hypotheses to determine the integration of stimuli, and subsequently designing and performing behavioural experiments to test these

Reconstruct the evolution of vision in spiders using phylogenetic comparative methods, geometric morphometrics, functional data and, if necessary, exemplary fossils

Fieldwork to collect animals for behavioural experiments, developmental studies and microCT

Publication of results in scientific journals

Presentation of results at scientific conferences

Requirements:

Project Description:


Lifestyle transitions are major evolutionary events often reflected by extreme morphological modifications. One particularly obvious example is the secondary adaptation of whales to an aquatic lifestyle. Toothed and baleen whales (Cetacea) are included in the Cetartiodactyla clade with even-toed ungulates (“Artiodactyla”). Their early fossil record documents species within the paraphyletic “Archaeoceti” that are crucial to understand this major evolutionary transition from the terrestrial to the aquatic environment. Members of the earliest known family, the Pakicetidae, were mostly terrestrial with some adaptations to water. They lived during the early Eocene (ca. 50 million years ago). And it is mostly during the middle to late Eocene when the quadrupedal whales “Protocetidae” diversified. They represent a key stage of cetacean locomotor evolution, displaying swimming abilities close to modern otters. This project will focus in particular on a new middle Eocene protocetid from Peru, with exceptionally well-preserved postcranial elements, Peregocetus pacificus. Its postcranial gross morphology and microanatomy will be thoroughly described – combining external morphology observation and measurements to computed tomography data – and compared with other extinct and extant mammals to interpret the function of key anatomical traits. Variables of importance for the land-to-water transition will be further studied with phylogenetic comparative methods. This will involve reconstructing the most likely ancestral states for these variables and mapping the evolution of these aquatic adaptations on the phylogeny of cetartiodactyls. We will identify the most likely evolutionary model that led extinct whales to an aquatic lifestyle by means of evolutionary model comparison. Finally, a multivariate dataset will be used in a phylogenetically informed discriminant analysis to reconstruct the locomotion mode of Peregocetus pacificus and other extinct cetaceans.


Responsibilities:
Identification of evolutionary patterns associated with cetacean lifestyle and adaptation to the aquat-ic environment, with a focus on „Protocetidae“

Integrative functional morphological analysis of the postcranial skeleton

Modelling and explaining the evolution of the Cetartiodactyla

Biodiversity Informatics, within which the position is situated, develops research data infrastructures for LIB. Research data infrastructures primarily comprise all data from the collections and related research. This also includes data from genome research and biodiversity monitoring. Major goal of biodiversity informatics at LIB is the development of new tools, based on semantic web technologies, for the management of research data, e.g. to facilitate AI-based annotation and discovery of the data. The infrastructure makes the data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), scales with Big Data.

The main tasks of the biodiversity informatics scientist will be to advance the digitization of the natural history collections, contribute to the further development, expansion and usability of LIB's Digital Collection Catalogue (see e.g. https://collections.zfmk.de) in a national and international network of natural history collections, and to train scientists in digitization and management of specimen information. The American Museum of Natural History is recruiting an exceptional postdoc to be part of a highly innovative project to optimize techniques in isolating historical DNA (hDNA), modeling DNA degradation, and analyzing DNA from specimens in the herpetology and ornithology collections at the (AMNH). This project is funded by a National Science Foundation award to Christopher Raxworthy and Brian T. Smith in the Division of Vertebrate Zoology, AMNH.

This NSF-funded project aims to develop efficient and open-source protocols for yielding genome-scale molecular data from typical traditional museum specimens, based on rigorous experiments using time-series collections at the AMNH. Museum specimens of amphibians, reptiles, and birds will be sampled for DNA across two collecting periods of:

1. <1-30 years for field-frozen, dry and fluid preserved voucher tissues, all taken from the same specimens for which alternative DNA prep types will be directly compared; 
2. 30-150 years, for older traditional voucher specimens which lack frozen tissue samples. 

This combined approach will determine the optimal source and extraction methods for hDNA, develop improved methods for reverse crosslinking with formalin-fixed DNA, and provide a much deeper understanding of how DNA degrades due to exposure to formalin, alcohol, tissue buffers, and archival storage time. This project will also develop pipelines for bioinformatics processing of hDNA, to better detect contamination, evaluate the effects of hDNA on phylogenetic inference, and improve the utility of hDNA in all aspects of comparative biology.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

• conduct and co-design experimental tests of DNA extraction; 
• prepare samples for molecular sequencing; 
• analyze molecular data; 
• model DNA degradation across sample types and time; manage project internet portal and web pages; 
• co-mentor undergraduate and high school students; 
• co-develop best-practices for bioinformatics processing of hDNA; 
• and prepare results for publication as lead author. 

The postdoc will have opportunities to present their work at conferences, attend various professional development activities, and get to participate on an expedition to Madagascar to collect samples for the project. Currently, this is a 2.5 year term position.

Required experience:
Ph.D. or equivalent in evolutionary biology, computational biology, or related fields and demonstrated record of productivity and publications. Experience with DNA extraction, next-generation sequencing, wetlab methods (ideally including 'clean room' DNA labs), computer programming (e.g., python; R), genomics, molecular evolution, and vertebrate biology.

Internship opportunity at the French Natural History Museum: Green Roofs as Nature Based Solutions: identifying links between ecosystem service provision and biodiversity

France’s National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) is a public institution that has studied the relationship between humans and nature for almost 400 years. Its current fields of study are vast, and include how nature can help humanity respond to modern day challenges (i.e. climate change) through bioinspiration and Nature Based Solutions (NBS) .

Context

With its extensive experience in urban ecology , the Museum recently became a partner of the H2020 Regreen project, which aims to foster Nature-Based Solutions for the ecological transition of cities in Europe and China . Bringing together 20 partners in four countries (France, Denmark, Croatia and China), Regreen has four key goals: i) improving knowledge on Nature Based Solutions; ii) the development of cartographic tools and models; iii) the deployment of markets and jobs related to Nature Based Solutions; and iv) studying the links between well-being, health and nature in cities.

The Museum is involved in the Regreen’s Work Package 3, on the “Mapping and modelling of ecosystem services” provided by Nature Based Solutions. One aspect of this WP requires investigating the link between urban NBS and biodiversity, and specifically how the quality of NBS might depend on biodiversity.

The Museum has selected green roofs as the target NBS for this work, as they represent an accessible type of green infrastructure that can be applied at multiple scales, and for which a knowledge base and political commitment already exists in France and internationally.
Green roofs are often described as Nature-Based Solutions that can deliver ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration; urban heat island reduction; stormwater management; insulation (sound and heat); improved air quality; food production; improved photovoltaic outputs (due to cooling effect); recreation/well-being and human health. However, these benefits are not yet well quantified. The GROOVES project (2017 – 2019) carried out an assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services of 36 green roofs in the Greater Paris area. The study showed that these benefits vary across green roofs and depend on design and management principles.

Moreover, questions remain regarding how biodiversity underpins the provision of these ecosystem services. Green roofs in urban areas are often challenging environments for plant growth, in part due to their exposure to environmental stresses. It is hypothesised that biodiversity, and associations between species in particular, might play a critical role in ensuring resilient biological communities. Exploring these relationships would increase our understanding of the ecology of green roofs and help urban planners to create green roofs in a “nature-based” way.

Internship objectives

The internship will build on existing expertise and data available on Paris Region green roofs, particularly the GROOVES project, in order to:
i) Map green roofs’ biodiversity in the greater Paris region;
ii) Model the relationship between green roofs’ biodiversity and ecosystem service provision and;
iii) Provide guidance on the creation of green roofs that support ecosystem service provision and biodiversity

Although primarily focused on the greater Paris region as one of the Urban Living Labs (ULL) of Regreen , this work should be applicable to other ULLs (Denmark, Croatia and China), and sufficiently flexible to accommodate local biogeographic and socio-economic conditions.

Tasks and activities

Under the co-direction of Annabelle Aish (Bioinspire-Museum) and Dr Laurent Palka (UMR CESCO), and in collaboration with other MNHN and ARB colleagues, the intern will carry out the following two activities:
1. Mapping and modelling
Using relevant statistical tools and software, analyse the existing GROOVES datasets (multi-taxa inventories of flora/arthropods/microorganisms) and ecosystem services data (in particular, temperature mitigation and water retention/evapotranspiration) collected during the Grooves project to evaluate how green roof biodiversity contributes to ecosystem services provision. These datasets cover 36 roofs across the greater Paris area.
2. Guidance
Based on the above analyses, suggest how green roofs, as NBS, might be constructed to maximise their ecosystem services (and biodiversity) in cities.

Outputs and deliverables

The internship will deliver three key outputs:
• A scientific report summarising the work undertaken as part of activities 1 and 2.
• A scientific article, co-authored with project supervisors, for submission to an appropriate conservation journal.

These documents will build on existing literature and will be written in English.

functional genomics and 3D skull shape modelling of bottlenose dolphins
globally. The project is led by Dr Andre E. Moura at the Museum and
Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, whose research
group is focused on cetacean ecology and evolution. The research group
is based at the Research Station of the Museum and Institute of Zoology
(MIZ), Polish Academy of Sciences in Gda?sk ? G?rki Wschodnie.

The successful candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student in the
Bioplanet Doctoral School of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with
starting date of October 1st 2020 (application to the Doctoral School is
required, and attendance of the required oral entry exam). A tax-free
stipend is available for the 4 years of the PhD and is not extendible.
The stipend is sufficient to cover life expenses of a single person and
ensures a good standard of life in Poland. The School does not charge
tuition fees, and includes mandatory and optional classes for PhD
students, which are run in English. Travelling from Gda?sk to Warsaw
will be required to attend the classes.

The project involves collaboration with international institutions,
including the Smithsonian Museum (Washington, USA) and the National
Museum for Nature and Science (Tokyo, Japan), and will likely require
travelling to museums worldwide for data collection (funding is
provided). This includes a 3 month stay in Japan for data collection and
learning of 3D modelling techniques (will require funding application to

This PhD position falls within the scope of long-term research investigations developed at SMNS, aimed at understanding the origins and modalities of subterranean evolution and adaptation in beetles.
The successful applicant will reconstruct the first molecular phylogeny of the tribe Bythini, with focus on subterranean species. The results will allow to clarify phylogenetic affinities between the genera, test the monophyly of the Dinaric group and the phylogenetic validity of previous classifications. Comparison of phylogeny and morphology will allow to test the importance of convergence in subterranean life. Moreover, acquisition of taxonomic expertise on the group and description of new taxa are among the expected results of the project. The evolutionary history of the group and the impact of paleogeographical events on its present distribution will finally be analysed.

The successful candidate will be based at the Entomology Department of the SMNS. The project will be supervised by Dr. Arnaud Faille http://www.naturkundemuseum-bw.de/forschung/entomology/faille
The applicant will also collaborate with Dr. Peter Hlaváč (Natural History Museum, Prague).

The successful candidate is expected to have:
• M.Sc./Diploma degree or equivalent in biology by the time of the start of the project
• strong English language skills in both spoken and written form
• experience and interest in insect/beetle biodiversity and evolution
• ability to work in a collaborative environment
• organizationaI skills and flexibility
• willingness to traveI for sampling of cave and soil faunas
• skills in molecular biology and bioinformatics

Applicants must be highly motivated and have a background in entomology and phylogenetic analysis. Skills in speleology as well as experience in sampling of soil and cave invertebrates in the field would be a plus.
Please note: The applicant must enroll in a doctoral program at the University of Hohenheim to obtain the appropriate degree.

The malacological collection of the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt am Main is one of the major collections of Senckenberg. Its origins date back to the early 19th century and the collection comprises recent as well as fossil materials from the Tertiary and Quaternary. With currently more than 700.000 catalogued series and about 8.000 primary type specimens it ranges among the most important collections worldwide both in terms of scientific importance and scope. With the Archiv für Molluskenkunde Senckenberg’s malacology section publishes one of the oldest journals for molluscan studies.
We are looking for an experienced malacologist with an outstanding background in integrative taxonomy and systematics, who is well connected in the international malacological community.

Your tasks:
• Assume responsibility for the management and curatorship of the malacological collections together with the extensive malacological library and archives at Senckenberg’s headquarter in Frankfurt am Main
• Foster the collections importance as an international tool for research by developing and enlarging it with a focus on marine (preferred) and/or terrestrial taxa
• Conduct collection based research on the taxonomy, systematics and phylogeny of (preferably) marine molluscs including the acquisition of external funds
• Actively publish results of your research in international scientific journals
• Participate in joint marine research with other scientists at the department of Marine Zoology and in marine expeditions
• Assume editorial responsibility for the journal Archiv für Molluskenkunde
• Teach students and supervise practical work in the course of their academic qualification
Your profile:
• Doctoral degree in biology/zoology or related field; additional knowledge in paleontology would be desirable
• Excellent knowledge of molluscan systematics
• Experience in curating and managing of zoological collections

• Experience with modern research infrastructure and research approaches, such as molecular genetics or imaging methods
• Outstanding research record in systematics or morphology of molluscs, documented by publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals
• Fluency in English both spoken and written; good knowledge of German
