Dos becas/prácticas remuneradas en ornitología, trabajando con rapaces en Alemania

The Raptor-research group at the Department of Animal Behaviour is

searching for a new team-member with a focus on behavioural experiments
in the field for the beginning of 2024.  Our research group studies
the ecology of local raptor species regarding the behavioural ecology
and interactions of Common Buzzards (Buteo buteo), Goshawks (Accipiter
gentilis) and Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo). The Eagle Owl has experienced an
impressive comeback in the last decades. At the same time this species
does not only exert pressure on birds of prey such as Buzzard and
Goshawk through competition for prey and breeding sites, but also as
a predator ("intraguild predation"). The consequences of the Eagle
Owls expansion on the behaviour and habitat choice of the Common Buzzard
are not yet understood.  The current project includes experiments on the
territorial behaviour of Common Buzzards towards Eagle Owl and Goshawk
and the acquisition of data on their breeding habitat (nest environment,
forest patch size, distance to roads etc.) in our approximately 300 km²
large study area near Bielefeld. The behavioural tests will be conducted
using Eagle Owl and Goshawk dummies. The field work requires the usage
of a private vehicle. The costs for fuel are of course reimbursed.
The field season is constituted of a mapping phase (mid-March to May)
followed by an experimental phase (May to max. August). Analyses will
be performed subsequently.  The estimated duration of the project is
at least six months. We therefore offer a six-month stipend as support
(750€/month).

Requirements
We apply established ornithological methods during our yearly field
season (e.g. nest searching and checks, bird-ringing), which involve a
high workload in the field but are equally rewarding. A background in
ornithology is beneficial, but not required. Most importantly, we are
searching for enthusiastic and autonomous students. Of course, there will
be introductory training at the beginning of the field season. You will
also be a part of our bird-ringing teams sampling raptor nestlings. We
view the successful conclusion of your project and field season as a
superb basis for a future PhD position.

Supervision
The supervisors of the project are Dr. Nayden Chakarov
(nayden.chakarov@uni-bielefeld.de) and Prof. Dr. Oliver Krüger.
Applications should be submitted by 15.01.2024

-----

The Raptor-research group at the Department of Animal Behaviour is
searching for a new team-member with a focus on parasitology for the
beginning of 2024.  Our research group studies the ecology and evolution
of local raptor populations and their blood parasites (Haemosporida),
which represent Malaria-like protists transmitted by mosquitoes,
blackflies and biting midges. Blood parasite diversity is high and
accompanies the evolution of their hosts. Simultaneously, blood parasites
are also drivers of evolution and should be considered at least equally
representative of biodiversity as metazoan species. In the current project
we aim to study the spatiotemporal occurrence of blood parasites in a
raptor population that has been studied for the past decades. The focus
lies on understanding the influence of environmental factors and habitat
properties on the diversity and occurrence of these parasites.

The project includes sample acquisition and parasitological analysis
(microscopy, molecular methods) of blood samples of Common Buzzards
(Buteo buteo) and other raptor species. Furthermore, you will acquire
data on breeding habitat properties (nest environment, distance to
water bodies etc.) in our approximately 300 km² large study area near
Bielefeld. The field work requires the usage of a private vehicle. The
costs for fuel are of course reimbursed.

The field season is constituted of a mapping phase (mid-March to May)
followed by a sampling phase (May to max. August). Analyses will be
performed subsequently (the application/implementation of advanced
methods is favourable). The estimated duration of the project is at
least six months. We therefore offer a six-month stipend as support
(750 euro /month).

Requirements
We apply established ornithological methods during our yearly field
season (e.g. nest searching and checks, bird-ringing), which involve
a high workload in the field but are equally rewarding. A background
in ornithology or parasitology is beneficial, but not required. Most
importantly, we are searching for enthusiastic and autonomous students. Of
course, there will be introductory training at the beginning of the
field season. We view the successful conclusion of your project and
field season as a superb basis for a future PhD position.

Supervision
The supervisors of the project are Dr. Nayden Chakarov

Trabaja en el seguimiento y la recuperación de poblaciones de águila real, halcón peregrino y otras rapaces

Oferta compartida por Cristina

Job vacancy: Raptor Conservation Officer, Cairngorms National Park

The Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) is advertising a three-year, full time position for a Raptor Conservation Officer, to deliver the actions laid out in the National Park’s latest Partnership Plan (2022-2027) aimed at increasing the home range, occupation and breeding success of golden eagle, hen harrier, merlin and peregrine across the National Park.

This is a promising move by the CNPA, who have previously faced severe criticism for not dealing effectively with ongoing raptor persecution in some areas of the Park, notably on land that’s managed for intensive driven grouse shooting (e.g. see here & here).

Crimes against birds of prey, especially those that take place within the Cairngorms National Park, are often high profile, and quite rightly so. For example the recent poisoning of a golden eagle on a grouse moor within the Park (here) and the poisoning of a white-tailed eagle on another grouse moor within the Park (here) generated widespread outrage and media coverage, as did the sighting of a young golden eagle flying around a grouse moor in the Park with a spring trap clamped to its leg/foot (here).

Last year, the CNPA stated its intention to address intensive gamebird management within the Park as part of its Partnership Plan (here), which was seen as a good move by many of us who know that raptor persecution is disproportionately associated with land managed for gamebird shooting. That, combined with the creation of this new Raptor Conservation Officer post, is indicative of things moving in the right direction.

Make no mistake though, this new post will be a challenging one. There are some fantastic estates in the Cairngorms National Park who have been hosting and protecting breeding raptors (e.g. golden eagles, white-tailed eagles, hen harriers) for some time now, but there are also other estates that stubbornly refuse to tolerate these species and still behave as though it’s the 1890s.

The post is full time for three years, attracting a salary between £33,652 – £40,362. The closing date for applications is Sunday 30th April at 23.59hrs.

Trabaja monitoreando rapaces en UK

Seasonal Assistant, Bowland

Reference number: A5140119

Location: Lancashire

The RSPB is looking for a skilled and dedicated Field Officer to help monitor and protect birds of prey on the United Utilities Estate in the Bowland Fells. Located in Lancashire, the Bowland Fells are designated as a SSSI and SPA for their blanket bog and upland heath habitats and for the suite of exciting species that breed there.

The focus of this role is on monitoring and protecting Hen Harriers, Merlins, Peregrines and Short-eared Owls. Historically, Bowland was at one time the most important area in England for Hen Harriers, and the RSPB is working with Unitied Utilities and other partners to restore the population of this species to its SPA designation and back towards its historical population level. Excellent field skills and experience of monitoring and protecting upland birds of prey (including nest finding) are essential, particularly of the four named focal species. You will also have a thorough understanding of bird of prey ecology and the challenges associated with bird of prey conservation in the uplands, and apply this knowledge to your work accordingly.

Reporting to the Project Officer, you will work with him to organise the field work schedule following best practice monitoring protocols as well as health and safety protocols and have the leadership skills required to oversee the project in the event of his absence.

Working in a small tight-knit team, during a fast-paced breeding season, excellent comunication skills, attention to detail, accurate record-keeping, and the ability to work well under pressure are key requirements. Most of your time will be spent working outdoors so you must be physically fit and comfortable working in remote upland locations in all types of weather.

In addition to bird of prey monitoring, a core responsibility of this post is the support of our dedicated team of around 20 volunteers as a vital component of our work in Bowland. You will employ positive people skills to support and inspire them, and to develop their skills. You will also use excellent communication and diplomacy skills to build positive relationships with local partners and stakeholders, deal with conflicts constructively, and to encourage engagement and support for our work and to deliver results.

A driving licence will be necessary due to the need to travel within Bowland, and experience of driving off-road over difficult terrain is desirable. This is a five month post running from the beginning of March to the end of July. It often involves working long hours, including some early-morning and late-evening working, and occasional weekend work.

Set in beautiful upland scenery as well as the birds of prey that make Bowland so special, there are also important populations of Curlew, Ring Ouzel, Common Sandpiper and Pied Flycatcher amongst many other species. The Forest of Bowland in the breeding season is an incredibly exciting place to be for wildlife enthusiasts, and this is a very special opportunity for someone with the required skills.

This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be asked to declare unspent convictions and cautions at offer of employment stage.

http://www.seo.org/2012/04/09/censos-de-especies/

Post-doctoral research at the Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, University of Cape Town (South Africa)

Project:  Analysis of expanding urban raptor populations using long-term
data sets

We invite applications for the above one-year, full-time research
opportunity at the FitzPatrick Institute, a world-renowned, national Centre
of Excellence (CoE) in ornithological research with a strong emphasis on
postgraduate studies.

The successful applicant will have access to two long-term raptor studies
which have been carried out on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa. Firstly, a
25-year study of the Peregrine Falcons (1989-ongoing) carried out by Dr
Andrew Jenkins and secondly, a 13-year monitoring study of the Black
Sparrowhawks (2001-ongoing) principally collected by Ann Koeslag. During
both studies, populations have increased dramatically (from <10 50="" p="" pairs="" to="">pairs over the period of study).

Annual monitoring data includes recording of territorial occupancy,
population size, site fidelity, turn-over, breeding success and
productivity. Both studies have colour ringed a large proportion of the
adults and juveniles, thus providing information on life time reproductive
success and other data only obtainable with individually marked populations.
Additionally we have dietary information for both populations and blood
samples have been collected for a number of years. We have robust survival
estimates for both populations and we have some information on home range
use of the Black Sparrowhawk.

There is considerable flexibility in the scope of the research, dependent on
the applicant’s interests or skills, although the successful applicant will
be expected to make use of the existing long-term data sets and to submit a
number of papers for publication in top international journals within the year.

Funding is secured for a R140 000 CoE bursary (tax exempt) for one year and
adequate project running costs (w.e.f. January 2014).

Support and supervision will be provided by Dr Arjun Amar and Dr Res
Altwegg, and by Dr Andrew Jenkins for the Peregrine data and Anne Koeslag
for the Black Sparrowhawk data. Applicants must have completed their PhD in
a relevant subject within the past five years, have strong analytical skills
and a good publication record for the current stage of career.
To apply, please send a CV (including your academic record, publication list
& the names and contact details of three referees) plus a short motivation
letter and an outline of how you would use these data to answer questions of
interest to the your areas of expertise to Hilary Buchanan at
hilary.buchanan@uct.ac.za. Informal enquires can be directed to Dr Arjun
Amar: arjun.amar@uct.ac.za.
