Lead Surveyor

About Us

At Saildrone, we sustainably explore, map, and monitor the oceans to understand, protect, and preserve our world. We provide real-time access to critical data from any ocean on earth, 24/7/365, and use proprietary software applications to transform that data into actionable insights and intelligence. Our fleet of uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), powered by renewable wind and solar power, have a minimal carbon footprint and operate without the need for a crewed support vessel.

Saildrone works with governments, civil agencies, foundations, universities, and private companies around the globe to drive better information about our oceans and seas—from sailing into the eye of a category 4 hurricane to obtain new data about how storms intensify, collecting new CO2 data in hard-to-reach areas, and counting fish biomass to inform sustainable fishery management, to mapping the ocean floor and reducing illegal fishing and drug trafficking. As a result of our work, we have been included on TIME's List of the 100 Most Influential Companies in 2024, Fast Company’s list of the "World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2022," and earned the Ocean Awards’ Innovation Award, presented by the Blue Marine Foundation. Saildrone's hurricane mission was included as one of The New York Times' "Top 21 Things that happened (for the first time) in 2021" and Popular Science's "100 Greatest Innovations of 2021," and entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for recording the "highest windspeed recorded by a USV."

We are based in Alameda, CA, with offices in Washington DC and St. Petersburg, FL, and operate our missions worldwide. Saildrone is backed by top-tier investors in the frontier tech and sustainability sectors, including Social Capital, Capricorn, Lux Capital, BOND Capital, and Emerson Collective.

This is an exciting opportunity with a fast-growing team at the cutting-edge intersection of big data services and autonomous hardware. You will be an integral part of a high-performing multi-disciplinary team that delivers high impact for humanity and future generations.

  • Coordinating and directing contracted survey watch-standers in their roles and responsibilities.

Position description

The Ocean Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for two positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure-track) level. We encourage applications from scientists working in the subdiscipline of biological oceanography with an emphasis on ocean microbiomes (first position) and marine ecology and food webs at intermediate trophic levels (second position), with a preference in both positions for a research program that emphasizes observational oceanography. We seek scholars seriously committed to applying inclusive undergraduate and graduate mentoring practices, and to applying inclusive teaching practices of undergraduate and graduate level courses in oceanography and in specialty courses in their field of expertise. The successful candidates will have considerable breadth in Biological Oceanography. We encourage applications from candidates who incorporate environmental justice in their research, teaching, and/or community engagement and professional activities. We also seek evidence of an ability to mentor students and postdoctoral associates and to contribute broadly to the university and the profession.

The preferred candidates will be expected to develop and maintain vigorous research programs that complement existing departmental strengths in biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography. For the first position, preferred areas of interest include leading-edge research in the broad field of ‘omics (genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, proteomic) to understand fundamental and/or applied biological or biogeochemical processes in marine systems. For the second position, preferred areas of interest include trophic ecology of organisms from planktonic (protist) to mid-level (e.g., forage fish) predators, including the distribution, population dynamics, and adaptive capacity of organisms and ecosystems to provide mechanistic insights for how the oceanic biosphere changes in response to, for example, deoxygenation, acidification, marine heatwaves, and human exploitation. Both positions will have the opportunity to shape the direction of the newly established Coastal Resilience Initiative at UC Santa Cruz, that aims to build resilience and sustainability in the face of growing coastal hazards.

UC Santa Cruz is distinguished by our high-impact research and our commitment to diversity, social justice, the environment, and educational opportunity. We recognize the inherent link between diversity, innovation, and excellence in all aspects of the academic enterprise. Our innovative approach to research and experiential education provides a transformative student experience. The campus is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Serving Institution. It enrolls over 18,000 students, many from historically underserved communities; 34% are first-generation and 40% are Pell recipients. We welcome candidates that demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion through research, teaching, mentoring, community engagement and/or service and that have experience in creating an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. We welcome candidates with demonstrable, or a strong potential to develop, leadership skills, particularly in promoting DEI. UC Santa Cruz is committed to addressing the holistic needs of faculty. We also welcome applications from those who have had non-traditional career paths, who have taken time off for personal reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)

Ofertas de master y doctorado en oceanografía en Canadá

Graduate Student Opportunities in Oceanography at University of Victoria

I am seeking motivated MSc and PhD students to join my chemical oceanography group at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria (Victoria, BC, Canada). We use high precision measurements of dissolved gases to study the ocean carbon cycle. How ocean carbon is changing is a defining issue in our field today, because of its implications for future climate change and ocean ecosystems. We study this question by making measurements of oxygen to quantify ocean productivity, of nitrogen to look at denitrification, and of inert gases like neon and argon to understand the physical processes that affect carbon.

Possible scientific research directions include:
- quantifying net biological productivity over an annual cycle using oxygen sensors on profiling Argo floats in the NE Pacific, including comparison to our lab?s discrete estimates from discrete oxygen/argon ratios
- elucidating the nitrogen cycle in the Arctic from measurements of dissolved nitrogen/argon ratios to detect denitrification rates
- using noble gas measurements to understand the impact of water mass formation on deep ocean carbon and to refine parameterizations of air-sea gas exchange
Any of the projects in my lab would require a student to periodically go to sea to collect dissolved gas samples and then analyze the samples in my laboratory using cryogenic gas processing techniques and a mass spectrometer. See my research projects page for more information:http://web.uvic.ca/~rhamme/research.html

While I would expect to train any student in the necessary procedures, it is important that the student possess a strong attention to detail and good analytical chemistry skills. Prospective students should be bright and self-motivated with good communication skills, a natural curiosity about science, and some patience for lab work.

If interested, please contact Dr. Roberta Hamme at rhamme@uvic.ca Applications are due at University of Victoria by 15 February for full consideration.

Probablemente una de las mejores oportunidades en oceanografía

We are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for Year 5 of the Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence (NF-POGO CofE) at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). The training will run from October 2017 to August 2018.

The NF-POGO CofE has provided world class education and training courses in the field of observational oceanography since 2008. Since 2013, the NF-POGO CofE has been hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Germany’s foremost polar and marine research institution.

Venue and Background

Located in the North Sea, the NF-POGO Centre of Excellence at AWI will be conducted on the offshore island of Helgoland and the UNESCO reserve Waddensea island of Sylt. Helgoland provides opportunities for the study of open-ocean sciences; shelf/basin interactions are topics of study at Sylt.

Course Synopsis

The training will promote excellence in integrated, multidisciplinary oceanography at a global scale. Scholars will receive ten months of training to include one month of formal introductory training, followed by more detailed courses emphasizing core skills (e.g. writing, scientific presentations, statistics and experimental design) and specialised scientific topics such as modelling, remote sensing, ocean-atmosphere interactions. Scholars will also receive training in instrumentation, sample collection and analytical protocols. Each scholar will conduct an independent research project during the programme. The scientific staff of AWI can mentor research projects in numerous fields as it is large in number and diverse, with strength in many areas of Observational Oceanography; the scientists on Helgoland and Sylt have unique expertise in biology, ecology, time-series work and coastal processes.

How to apply

The course is open to early-career scientists from developing and developed countries, although preference will be given to those who currently hold a position in a research or academic institution in a developing country and anticipate returning to the country after completion of training. Candidates must have at least a first degree in science. Application details can be found here: www.awi.de/en/nf-pogo-cofe

The deadline for applications is 6 March 2017.

Please forward this on to your colleagues or students who may be interested.

Marine pollution is one of the main issues of our time and sediment is one of the recommended matrix for the evaluation of marine pollution as it can act as a sink and a source of pollutants to the marine environment. The study of both natural and synthetic
pollutants gives the whole picture of what is happening and the future trends and harms. In this context and having into account that microplastics are recognized as persistent and ubiquitous contaminants in aquatic environments and as one of the major challenges of the 21st century, this is one of our focal interests at the moment. Plastics typically compose around 80% of marine litter and have accumulated at the sea surface, on the sea floor and on shorelines worldwide. Attempts to quantify microplastics in the marine environment are more recent and require improvement in the methods applied in monitoring programmes on the marine environment. Microplastics can act as a “passive sampler” accumulating persistent pollutants that can be then transferred either to biota that ingest them or to sediments where they settle....More info: http://eshorizonte2020.es/expressions-of-interests/lucia-vinas
