Research Associate

Apply

JOB NUMBER
ACAD106723CONTRACT TYPE/WORK PATTERN
Open ended / Full time
CLOSING DATE
12 Apr 2023
FACULTY/DIVISION
Faculty of Life Sciences
SALARY
£36,333 - £40,745 per annum

The role

A postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) position is available to develop novel remote sensing approaches to track how the 3D structure of tropical forest canopies recovers following disturbance from logging. The PDRA will be based in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol within the research group of Dr Tommaso Jucker (https://www.selvalab.org). This is a 2-year full time position with a proposed start date of 1st June 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

What will you be doing?

You will use a combination of airborne laser scanning (ALS) and satellite time series data to better understand how the 3D structure of tropical forest canopies recovers in the aftermath of logging. The project will initially focus on the Sabah Biodiversity Experiment in Malaysian Borneo, where repeat ALS data will be used to test the effectiveness of different restoration interventions (e.g., tree planting and liana cutting) for speeding up the recovery of selectively logged tropical forests. You will then apply these analytical approaches to other tropical regions, leveraging a newly compiled pan-tropical ALS database alongside with satellite time series data. You will be embedded within an international team of forest ecologists and remote sensing scientists funded through a recent NERC grant. In particular, the project will involve close collaboration with Prof. David Coomes at the University of Cambridge and Prof. Andy Hector at the University of Oxford. You will be expected to lead the analyses of the remote sensing data, write-up the findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences and project meetings.

You should apply if

You will have a PhD in forest ecology, remote sensing or other relevant subject, with a strong computational background and previous experience working with ALS and/or satellite data. You will be highly motivated, collaborative and an excellent communicator, as well as having a demonstrable desire to learn new skills. Training and guidance will be provided in database management, ALS data processing and analysis, as well as statistical modelling and scientific writing. Within the broad remit of the project, there is scope for you to help shape the focus and direction of the research based on your expertise and interests.

Oferta de asistente de campo voluntario en el trópico (Malasia)

A field assistant is required to help with a project on behaviour in social wasps. The position is a fantastic opportunity to gain tropical field experience, working in a vibrant research group, lead by Dr. Seirian Sumner, University College London, UK (http://www.sumnerlab.co.uk/). This exciting project combines behavioural experiments with next-generation sequencing to understand the molecular mechanisms behind sociality. The fieldwork will be conducted in Frasers Hill, Malaysia, and will run from January until March/April 2017 (minimum three months). The work involves marking wasps, manipulations, conducting censuses, sample collections, and behavioural observations.

Assistants are generally expected to have a good degree (2:1 or
equivalent) in the biological sciences. Background in molecular studies
is not required, as fieldwork is behavioural based. A keen interest in
behavioural ecology, social evolution, and/or entomology is desirable.
Applicants should be fit, enthusiastic, hard working, happy with living
in shared accommodation, and working in uncomfortable & challenging
conditions. Previous experience of working on social insects would be
an advantage. The applicant must be able to commit to the full field
season. These wasps can sting when provoked, so applicant must have no
known previous allergies to wasp/bee stings. Due to the nature of work
you may also be required to work up ladders, and must have full colour
vision.

All work-related costs in Malaysia will be paid for, including
accommodation and flight. Worldwide applicants are supported, although
must be fluent in English.

Please contact Dr. Daisy Taylor (daisy.taylor@bristol.ac.uk) for more
details. Applications should include a CV with email addresses for two
referees and a 1-page cover letter explaining why you would like to
work on the project. Applications should be submitted by e-mail to Dr.
Daisy Taylor . Shortlisted applications will be notified by email, and
will be invited for interview either in person or over skype/phone.

Voluntariado con avispas (de las que no pican) en Malasia

VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANT needed for 3 months starting early May 2011,
for study of hover wasp behavioural ecology in peninsular Malaysia (note:
these are small wasps that do not sting, with average colony sizes <5
individuals!). The work will involve helping a PhD student to census
and observe colonies as part of experiments to elucidate the basis
of helping behaviour in these wasps. The successful applicant must be
prepared to work hard and have an interest in behavioural/evolutionary
biology and enthusiasm for fieldwork. A driving licence is essential and,
because the work involves recording colour marks on individual animals,
the job would not be suitable for someone who is colour-blind! For
further details of how to apply and the research that we do, see:
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/lifesci/fieldlab/. Accomodation will be
provided, and air fare (from the UK) will be reimbursed on successful
completion of the field trip, with the applicant needing to pay for
only their own food/personal expenses, which are relatively cheap in
Malaysia. Accomodation will be a room in a small flat shared with the
PhD student and (for the first 2-3 weeks) supervisor - relatively good
for tropical research (shower, cooking facilities, TV etc.), and is in
a small village which is a centre for bird-watchers.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applicants should send a covering letter and a CV, including contact
details (including e-mail addresses/telephone nos.) for the applicant
and 2-3 referees who would be available to provide references during
February and March 2011. Applicants must be available for interview in
the UK during that time, and review of applications will begin 18 March
and continue until the position is filled.

Applications should be sent to:

Professor Jeremy Field,
School of Life Sciences,
John Maynard Smith Building
University of Sussex
Brighton BN1 9QG, UK.
