Free workshop on Animal Welfare Research

Animal welfare research impact is measured by its ability to drive positive changes in the way animals are treated, ensuring their wellbeing. There has been a huge increase in animal welfare research over recent decades, but improvements to global welfare standards are much slower than expected. While researchers may generate valuable insights and recommendations, implementing change in real-world settings is complex. Additionally, there may be resistance from individuals, industries and governments to adopt new practices that incur additional costs or require big changes to existing systems.

Addressing animal welfare research and impact gaps requires improved communication, knowledge translation, and funding allocation to help bridge the gaps between researchers, advocacy groups, industry and policymakers and make a meaningful impact on animal lives. Thus, we are excited to announce the launch of our workshop website. Global Synergy for Animal Welfare is a free online event taking place on the 19th-20th June which aims to help develop a greater understanding of how to improve communication and sharing of knowledge, in order to ensure greater impact, better lives for animals, and for the people who depend on them.

We are also honoured to reveal our distinguished plenary speakers, Dr. Dennis Bahati (Africa Network for Animal Welfare), Dr. Helen Beattie (Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Aotearoa, New Zealand), Prof. Georgia Mason (University of Guelph, Canada), Dr. Lynne Sneddon (the University of Gothenburg, Sweden) and Dr. Leopoldo Stuardo (World Organisation for Animal Health) further details of whom can be found on our website. Registration and abstract submission are also now open, and we invite contributions from animal welfare scientists, animal welfare NGOs, industry and governments, which demonstrate clear examples of where research has resulted in improved animal lives.

Trabaja en remoto como director de asuntos científicos en una ONG centrada en conservación de fauna salvaje

Oferta compartida por Nuria

Wild Animal Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to understand and improve the lives of wild animals.

Even in nature, most wild animals struggle to survive every day. Unfortunately, preserving habitats or species does not guarantee that animals themselves have good lives. At Wild Animal Initiative, we believe we have a responsibility to act to improve the well-being of wild animals, whether they live in captivity or somewhere else.

Yet, responsible action requires sound science. There is still so much we don’t know about which animals are sentient, what their lives are like in the wild, and how we can responsibly help them. While conservation biology informs efforts to preserve species in the wild and animal welfare science informs efforts to improve the well-being of animals in captivity, there is no unified academic discipline to inform efforts to improve the well-being of animals in the wild.

Our work supports the study of wild animal welfare by conducting original research, fostering connections between academics from diverse disciplines, and securing funding for promising projects.

In brief, our programs to support scientific research include:
  • Outreach: organizing workshops and conferences concerning wild animal welfare, supporting our postdoctoral and advisory panels, and fostering new relationships with relevant academics and researchers.
  • Grant Assistance: helping scientists secure funding for wild animal welfare-relevant research projects.
  • Research: identifying priority research areas in wild animal welfare and conducting relevant studies or literature reviews.
We are seeking a Director of Scientific Affairs to unify and optimize our activities across these three areas. They will lead the planning and implementation of our programs that directly serve researchers. The director will ensure that our efforts maximize our effectiveness and advance our goal of supporting wild animal welfare-focused science in the academic community.

Basic information:
  • Full time, ~ 40 hours per week.
  • $62,784 to $76,736 depending on cost of living at residence.
  • Permanently remote
  • Reports to the Executive Director
  • Manages 2+ direct reports

Responsibilities
Listed in descending order of estimated time spent on each category.
  • Research and outreach: Maintaining and growing our network of collaborators, working with team members to identify our research priorities, and identifying new grant opportunities for our research partners.
  • Program design: Managing existing program activities and developing new mechanisms for advancing interest in wild animal welfare research.
  • Evaluation: Critically evaluating our programmatic activities for impact.
  • Management: Managing our research and outreach staff members, supporting their professional development and assisting them in their projects.
  • Strategy: Working with the Executive Director and leadership team to identify strategic priorities for the organization
  • Assistance: Assist the Development and Communications teams as necessary to develop relationships with philanthropists and science/program directors at foundations, advise on scientific content in grant proposals, and support our scientific communications.
Requirements
Listed in descending order of importance to candidate evaluation.
  • Familiarity with the scientific community and funding environment in the US or the UK.

  • Ability to thrive in a remote work environment.
  • Experience managing and/or coordinating research projects or similar services.
  • Preferred: A strong network of relationships within an ecological or biological scientific community.

Os cuento cómo lo he hecho:

PhD in animal welfare (UK)

We are looking for candidates who may be interested in a PhD studentship based at the University of Bristol and Newcastle University investigating a novel method of welfare assessment in domestic dogs. The project has been short-listed for funding by UFAW and requires a named PhD student for the final stage of application. The studentship investigates “Telomere length as a novel measure of cumulative life experience in domestic dogs” and would be supervised by Dr Rachel Casey (Bristol), Prof Melissa Bateson (Newcastle) and Dr Lucy Asher (Newcastle). The project is described briefly below:

Telomeres are nucleoprotein ‘caps’ on the end of linear chromosomes which act to protect them from recombination, fusion and being broken down as damaged DNA. Because telomeres do not replicate as effectively as the rest of the chromosome, they become shorter each time the cell divides and hence telomere length decreases with age. In people, an increased rate of telomere attrition has been associated with environmental and psychosocial stress (e.g. poor caregiving environments in childhood) suggesting alterations in the rate of shortening as a potential biomarker of cumulative stress exposure. In this study we use the domestic dog as a model to investigate telomere attrition as an indicator of naturally occurring cumulative experience in domestic animals. The study uses a dog birth cohort study in which puppies between birth and 16 weeks of age are recruited and followed prospectively through life with owner questionnaires, biological samples and veterinary health records. The primary aim of the project is to investigate whether rate of telomere attrition varies between dogs exposed to naturally occurring stressors in this population over both short and longer term time frames, as compared to unaffected controls.

Further information about the use of telomere attrition as a measure of animal welfare can be found in a recent review: Bateson, M. (2015). Cumulative stress in research animals. BioEssays. doi: 10.1002/bies.201500127

If you are interested in this opportunity and have a Bachelors or Masters degree in veterinary medicine, animal behaviour, psychology, animal science or biosciences please get in touch with Dr Rachel Casey (Rachel.Casey@bristol.ac.uk).

Animal Welfare Studentship

The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare is now inviting applications for the 2011 UFAW Animal Welfare Student Scholarships. The aim of this scheme is to enable students to pursue their interests in animal welfare and to provide them with the opportunity to conduct relevant research or other (e.g. educational) projects. Students will usually be undertaking courses in the agricultural, biological, psychological, veterinary or zoological sciences. However, we would also welcome applications from students from other disciplines and who are interested in carrying out a project in animal welfare.

Projects must be relevant to improving the welfare of farm, laboratory, companion, zoo, or free-living wild animals whose welfare is compromised by human factors, and may be carried out within the UK or overseas. Successful applicants will be awarded up to £1600 to cover subsistence and project expenses.

Application forms and further information are available from the ‘Grants & Awards’ page of the UFAW website: www.ufaw.org.uk, or please email: scioff@ufaw.org.uk.

Please note that the closing date for applications is: 28th February 2011.

With best wishes
