The Peregrine Fund busca formar un equipo de biólogos de campo para participar en el proyecto de investigación y recuperación del Gavilán de Sierra (Accipiter striatus venator) que está en peligro de extinción en las montañas centrales de Puerto Rico. El objetivo del proyecto es determinar el estado de la población y el número de parejas que anidan, y aumentar la productividad a través de propagación en cautiverio y la liberación de crías y el manejo de los sitios de anidación.


El trabajo de campo se llevará a cabo de enero a agosto (la fecha de finalización puede variar según la actividad de dispersión de las crías) e implicará la búsqueda de parejas territoriales o individuos, monitoreo de parejas durante su anidación y ayudar a seguir la dispersión de las crías. El trabajo será temprano en la temporada de reproducción y requerirá conducir por caminos sinuosos en las montañas, caminar en bosques tropicales densos para buscar las parejas territoriales, observar desde puntos estratégicos o miradores sobre hábitats boscosos en terrenos públicos y privados para detectar gavilanes y posibles parejas territoriales. Los candidatos deben estar en buenas condiciones físicas, ya que el trabajo implica rigurosas caminatas en bosques de terrenos accidentados para localizar parejas territoriales y realizar observaciones de nidos para la estimar productividad. Los candidatos deben estar dispuestos a ayudar a los coordinadores del proyecto a acceder a los nidos, recopilar datos sobre los huevos, tratar preventivamente los nidos para evitar infestaciones de parásitos y colocar cámaras de seguimiento. Los candidatos experimentados pueden liderar los esfuerzos para capturar gavilanes adultos y equiparlos con transmisores de radio para rastrear sus movimientos. Es importante que los candidatos sean pacientes y puedan permanecer concentrados mientras se sientan inactivos durante períodos de 4-6 horas mientras monitorean las parejas que anidan. Más adelante en la temporada, los gavilanes juveniles serán monitoreados hasta que alcancen la independencia y la dispersión puede ser rastreada mediante transmisores satelitales o telemetría de radio. El aplicante debe sentirse cómodo trabajando largas horas en clima húmedo y lluvioso, estar motivado y ser capaz de trabajar tanto solo como en equipo. Los candidatos deben trabajar bien en un ambiente de equipo y ser capaces de comunicar problemas y / o inquietudes de manera oportuna y respetuosa. Es muy deseable tener experiencia en telemetría, acceso a nidos, manipulación de aves jóvenes, captura y anillamiento de aves rapaces. Sobre todo, una actitud positiva y el deseo de trabajar y aprender son cualidades que se esperan de los candidatos. El equipo de campo estará en constante comunicación con un supervisor de campo y un especialista en propagación. Hay posibilidades de que este puesto se convierta en tiempo completo en un futuro cercano y alentamos a los candidatos a expresar su interés en trabajar a largo plazo para la recuperación sostenible de esta especie única. Los puestos de tiempo completo abarcarán una gama más amplia de deberes y responsabilidades incluida la divulgación / educación ambiental, la coordinación de voluntarios y oportunidades para colaborar y ayudar en el análisis de datos y publicaciones.



Salario o estipendio estacional: $1000-$1800/mes

Vivienda: Se proporcionará sin costo.

Enero-Septiembre: Casa de campo principal; Casa de 3 dormitorios con una cocina y lavandería cerca de la ciudad de Ponce.

Según sea necesario: Cabinas rústicas con habitaciones compartidas en el sitio de liberación cerca de la ciudad de Adjuntas pueden ser utilizadas dependiendo de las necesidades y los lugares de anidación de parejas identificadas. El agua corriente y la electricidad no están garantizadas en todo momento, los candidatos deben estar dispuestos y ser capaces de llevar un estilo de vida de “campamento”.



Transporte: Se proporcionará pasaje aéreo de ida y vuelta a la isla, junto con el uso de vehículos de campo compartidos. El millaje se reembolsará a las personas que utilicen su vehículo personal para tareas del proyecto.

Cualificación requerida o altamente deseable:

● Experiencia previa de trabajo de campo con aves: es importante estar familiarizado con el comportamiento y la identificación de las aves rapaces.

● Navegar con mapas topográficos y unidades GPS portátiles.

● Se requiere licencia de conducir válida.

Cualificaciones deseadas:

● Cómodo hablando tanto en español e inglés.

● Experiencia en el uso de telemetría para el seguimiento de fauna silvestre.

● Anillamiento y captura de aves rapaces.

● Experiencia previa en la incubación y / o de cría de especies de aves.

● Escalar árboles para acceder a nidos.

● Rehabilitación de aves o experiencia veterinaria.

● Experiencia básica de carpintería.

The Biology Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez invites applications for the position of assistant professor in microbiology. The selected candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses according to departmental needs. Courses could include, but are not limited to: General Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, and Food Microbiology. The candidate should design and develop new courses in the area of expertise or adopt previously created ones that are not currently offered. Other responsibilities include coordinating teaching laboratories, attending faculty an departmental meetings, active participation in departmental committees, and developing a successful, externally funded research program in the required area of expertise. External funds, when obtained, will allow eligibility for release time during the academic year to a maximum of half the teaching load (6 cr./hrs. out of a minimum of 12 credits per semester). Furthermore, since our Institutional mission is education, research, and service, faculty are expected to publish and present the research work in conferences and peer-reviewed journals, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, participate in faculty committees, professional and community service, and collaborate with institutional activities.

Postdoc in evolutionary genomics (Puerto Rico)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Postdoc in evolutionary and functional genomics. An EPSCoR-funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Riccardo Papa in the Department of Biology of the University of Puerto Rico, RÃo Piedras Campus, and in collaboration with Dr. Brian Counterman of thearchitecture of color pattern development in butterflies. These regions provide exciting candidates for further validation using functional approaches such as ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq and CRISPR to better understand the pathways involved in color pattern development and their evolution.

SPECIAL REQUISITES

The candidate must have completed Ph.D. degree within the last 5 years,
preferably in genomics, population genetics or statistical genetics.
The position requires skills in the more bioinformatical areas of
biology, and a strong record of research in these areas. High
motivation and mobility will be necessary to collaborate with the
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI, Panama; Owen McMillan),
Cornell University (US; Robert Reed), George Washington University (US;
Arnaud Martin) and Cambridge University (UK; Chris Jiggins). The work
will focus on bioinformatics methods to analyze genomic sequencing and
functional genomic data. Specifically, this includes building pipelines
to assemble and analyze whole genome resequencing data using multiple
platforms and obtain and analyze ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq data. Strong
knowledge of the Heliconius system is preferred but not required.

Técnico de campo para trabajar con anfibios (Puerto Rico)

Job Description: One field technician needed from early April to late June to assist Ph.D. student in collection of amphibian data in the northern karst region of Puerto Rico. The focus of the season will be to gain preliminary understanding of terrestrial frog (Eleutherodactylus) species’ distributions in the region. Sites will have digital recording equipment for collecting acoustic data and artificial retreat structures for monitoring reproductive activity.

The karst region is a sparsely populated region characterized by short,
forested hills (mogotes). Daily fieldwork will include lots of driving
on narrow, curvy roads between field sites. Getting to sampling sites
will involve hiking up and down mogotes. Days will be long, and some
late nights are inevitable. Time off will be irregular.

Salary range: $1600-1800/month, depending on qualifications. Remote,
primitive housing will be provided.

Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a good sense of humor
and strong work ethic, and be detail-oriented and curious about the
natural world. Ecological field research experience is required, and you
must be comfortable handling frogs. You should have a demonstrated
ability to walk across rugged terrain while carrying equipment and
maintaining a positive attitude. You must possess a valid U.S. driver’s
license and good driving record. Ideal candidates will have experience
living in a Spanish-speaking environment.

Postdoc position : Climate change impacts on a tropical aquatic ecosystem

We are looking for a highly-motivated candidate with significant
experience in community ecology to run a multi-site project in the
Neotropics. The applicant must be in possession of a PhD by September
2012.
We seek candidates with the following :
- proven ability to manage field experiments in remote locations,
especially tropical
- available for fieldwork in remote tropical locations for several months
of the year
- strong publication record
- strong quantitative skills
- previous experience with aquatic food webs desirable
- strong spoken and written English, fluency in French or Spanish would be
useful

The PDF would be based at both the Functional Ecology Lab, Univ. Toulouse
(Ecolab, France) and the Biodiversity Research Center, Univ. British
Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), with fieldwork in French Guiana, Puerto Rico
and Costa Rica.

The overall aim of the project is to understand the interaction between
biogeographic changes in regional species pools and climate change, to
build a robust, multi-regional theory of how changes in the hydrologic
regime affect ecosystems. The post-doc will oversee and conduct replicated
experiments in Caribbean islands and in Central-South America, to examine
the effects of disrupted hydrological regime on aquatic food webs. We will
take advantage of an ecosystem that is naturally replicated throughout the
neotropics: the invertebrate food web inhabiting water-filled bromeliads.
This system is especially amenable to studies of food web structure and
ecosystem function, and forms a relevant model system for testing
ecological theory.

This position is contingent on successful receipt of a research grant by
the PIs, with a start date expected in early October 2012.
