Associate Professors of biodiversity conservation, natural resources and/or data science in Tokio

 Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) invites applications for one (1) associate professor for the tenure-track position in the field of natural environment conservation and data science. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong publication record and evidence of ability to conduct original research together with willingness to collaborate with existing facility members. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, and sustainable use of natural resources. The tenure-track period is five years. The appointee will be affiliated to the Institute of Agriculture and will run their independent research laboratory as a Principal Investigator. The appointee who makes outstanding achievements during the tenure-track period will be promoted to tenured position. The appointee will receive favorable treatment in the allocation of start-up funds for the initial launch of their laboratory, administrative support, etc. Furthermore, an environment in which they can focus on their research is provided with fewer duties in teaching and administrative work during the tenure-track period. They are expected to give lectures in their field of expertise at the affiliated department and graduate school and to supervise graduate students for their thesis research. Tenure reviews are conducted in the third and fifth years of the tenure-track period by the review committee. If the evaluation indicates that the appointee is appropriate, they will be promoted to tenured position. If they makes a significant achievement, they may be promoted to the tenured position in the third year. Evaluation criteria will be established within six months after the appointment. As described below, salary and benefits of this tenure-track appointee is about the same as tenured faculty with similar ranks.

Required qualifications:

Applicant must have a doctoral degree in the biological sciences, environmental sciences, or related field (or should provide proof they are expecting to graduate before this position begins).

Applicant should have a strong research record in species distribution / niche modeling or biodiversity modeling, spatial modeling and mapping, and effects of global change on biodiversity, as well as be skilled in R programming and GIS. Interest or research experience in ecosystem functions and services, and in phylogenetics and phylogeography, is preferred but not necessary. Applicant is expected to lecture and develop teaching materials for undergraduate ecology, particularly topics in community ecology, biogeography, and macroecology, so teaching experience is required. Applicant will also collaborate with Assoc. Prof. Jamie M. Kass on cutting-edge macroecology research, as well as assist in supervising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the lab. Lastly, applicant will work in an international environment where both English and Japanese are spoken, and should have interest in collaborating with other departmental faculty.

The involvement of creative young scientists is critical in pioneering new frontiers of science and technology. RIKEN’s Special Postdoctoral Researcher Program is a program to foster the development of researchers who will become internationally active in the future, and provides creative young scientists with the opportunity to be involved in autonomous and independent research on a topic of their own choosing that is in line with RIKEN objectives and research fields. The total number of hiring is about 60.

 Report and coordinate their actions directly with the OC Executive
Director.
 Develop the funding for the program through grant writing and work
with high end donors
 Represent OC conservation and science policy and programs at high
level scientific-conservation meetings, with government and private
sector institutions.
 Supervise the work of the Project Coordinators of the
conservation-field station and community focal areas.
 Act as a senior management staff member and coordinate with other OC
senior staff
 Build partnerships with research institutions and other conservation
entities.

Specific Duties

 Prepare, execute, and monitor the Reef to Ridge plan, both for OC and
the broader coalition of stakeholders.
 Develop the processes and policies that allow improving the
implementation of conservation activities in the field station,
private reserve, and broader corridor.
 Review any proposed research at OC field sites – principally
terrestrial and support to Marine Conservation Director on marine
areas.
 Design and conduct the organization's conservation-research grant
program (along with Marine Cons. Prog. Director) and, in coordination
with the Science Coordinators, provide technical support to the
grantees.
 Disseminate the organization's findings nationally and
internationally, generating connections with researchers and teachers
from national and foreign universities to attract research in the
field station.
 Ensure the collection, maintenance and use of the databases of
stations
 Seek and prepare proposals for the financing of terrestrial based
field and conservation projects in the corridor and station.
 Organize training courses where necessary for team members and
potential students.
 Build a strong social media presence by actively promoting the
conservation programs, organization overall and field sites on social
media and ensure that all associated staff do likewise.
 Other tasks and duties ongoing and as assigned.

Chulada de doctorado estudiando genómica y modelizado 3D de delfines por museos de todo el mundo

A fully-funded PhD position is available in a project integrating
functional genomics and 3D skull shape modelling of bottlenose dolphins
globally. The project is led by Dr Andre E. Moura at the Museum and
Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, whose research
group is focused on cetacean ecology and evolution. The research group
is based at the Research Station of the Museum and Institute of Zoology
(MIZ), Polish Academy of Sciences in Gda?sk ? G?rki Wschodnie.

The successful candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student in the
Bioplanet Doctoral School of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with
starting date of October 1st 2020 (application to the Doctoral School is
required, and attendance of the required oral entry exam). A tax-free
stipend is available for the 4 years of the PhD and is not extendible.
The stipend is sufficient to cover life expenses of a single person and
ensures a good standard of life in Poland. The School does not charge
tuition fees, and includes mandatory and optional classes for PhD
students, which are run in English. Travelling from Gda?sk to Warsaw
will be required to attend the classes.

The project involves collaboration with international institutions,
including the Smithsonian Museum (Washington, USA) and the National
Museum for Nature and Science (Tokyo, Japan), and will likely require
travelling to museums worldwide for data collection (funding is
provided). This includes a 3 month stay in Japan for data collection and
learning of 3D modelling techniques (will require funding application to
relevant scheme). We are mindful that travelling might be disturbed
under the current Covid19 situation, and any decisions regarding
travelling for this project will take the situation into account as it
develops.

Research environment

The research at the MIZ is focused on a broad range of themes in animal
biology, including systematics, biogeography, evolutionary biology,
ecology and population genetics. Andre Moura?s research group is part of
the Laboratory of the Molecular and Biometric Techniques led by Prof.
Wieslaw Bogdanowicz, grouping researchers focused on population
genetics, phylogeography and evolutionary genomics of a broad range of
animal taxa. MIZ laboratories contain modern equipment for genomic
analyses, including Pacific Biosciences RSII long-read sequencer and
Illumina MiSeq System. The state-of-the-art ancient DNA laboratory
carries out work on mammalian palaeogenetics. The Museum?s zoological
collection is among the largest and most valuable in Europe.

Postdoctoral Researchers (temporary job)
Nagano University - Nagano, Japan

Nagano University is planning to seek two trained researchers to work with a team on a study about the population dynamics and fisheries management of Japanese eel (Project Head: Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama). The project is supported by the Fisheries Agency of Japan, and is going to last
for at least several years. The outcome of the project is expected to contribute to discussions at FAO, IUCN and CITES and policy design and implementation on the management of Japanese eel. Lab technicians (several people) are going to help the postdoctoral researchers.

Duties & Responsibilities:
(1) Postdoctoral Researcher #1 (Data Scientist/Bioinformatician,
population genetics, SNPs (MIG-seq and/or RAD), effective population
size, pairwise sequentially Markovian coalescent, PSMC) The researcher's
primary responsibilities include: developing the research design to get
information about SNPs (MIG-seq and/or RAD) and estimating the yearly
effective population size of Japanese eel; estimating demographic history
by the PSMC method; developing statistical and mathematical methods for
population genetics; and writing papers with co-workers.

(2) Postdoctoral Researcher #2 (Statistician, frequentist, time-series
analysis, fisheries management, mathematical modeling) The researcher's
primary responsibilities include: analyzing multivariate time-series
of fisheries and environmental data of Japanese eel in frequentist
approaches (not Bayesian); developing statistical and mathematical
methods for fisheries management; and writing papers with co-workers. The
spatiotemporal data include missing values.

Moreover, all postdoctoral researchers should cooperate with each other,
participate in team discussions, assist the members of the team and the
lab in all respects, and accept other duties as assigned.

Minimum education: Ph.D. in a related field

The Graduate School of Engineering, Shizuoka University

position in Mathematical and Systems Engineering, at the associate or
assistant professor level, beginning at the earliest possible time in
2014. Applicants should have a doctoral degree and a substantial record
of publications in such areas as Mathematical Engineering, Systems
Engineering and Computer Science. Applicants must be non-Japanese and
capable of offering courses in English. Preference will be given to
those applicants fully qualified at the associate professor level.
However, the assistant professor level may also be considered for
promising candidates with satisfactory qualifications.

The successful candidate will conduct research and teach some major
subjects in Mathematical and Systems Engineering in English.
Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to teach “Academic
English for Engineering” which focuses on technical writing and reading,
and also speaking and listening in technical English. The English
teaching load is two classroom courses per year. Expectations include
cooperating with others in developing international exchange programs in
both undergraduate and graduate levels. The appointment will be made on
