Main Description:
CIBIO is seeking an Assistant Researcher to carry out scientific research activities under a permanent contract. The successful candidate will participate in the design, development and execution of R&D projects, supervise research work, contribute to scientific training, and manage research staff. The position has a strong emphasis on genetics, functional genomics, and evolutionary and developmental biology, with a focus on non-model vertebrates.

Requirements:
  • PhD in Biological Sciences or related field, obtained at least 5 years ago
  • 5+ years of postdoctoral experience with an independent and consolidated research track record in genetics, functional genomics, and evolutionary and developmental biology
  • Demonstrated expertise in genetic and cellular mechanisms of biological pattern formation, morphogenesis, and phenotypic diversification in vertebrates
  • Experience with non-model systems and emerging genomic technologies (scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq, bulk RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, Hi-C, etc.)
  • Proficiency in both experimental and computational approaches to integrative functional genetics and genomics
  • Experience in advanced training (supervision of master's and doctoral students)
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary studies and act as corresponding author

The Plant Biodiversity lab at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is hiring a full-time lab manager for plant phylogenetic and phylogenomic research. The position is initially for two years but can be made permanent if performance is satisfying.

Our primary study systems are the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) and the flora of the Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic, where we study speciation processes. See more details on our webpage.

Responsibilities include:
  • DNA extraction
  • from field and herbarium samples, PCR, sequencing (Sanger, Illumina, Nanopore). 
  • Ordering supplies, managing the lab and maintaining equipment.
  • Training and helping undergraduate and graduate students in the lab. 
  • Lab safety management. 
  • Help with herbarium management (TUM herbarium is small, with c. 100.000 specimens). 
  • Participating in lab meetings and seminars when appropriate. 
  • Participation in field work and collecting trips is optional.
We look for an independent and focused person with problem-solving skills and genuine interest in research. The preferred candidate should have a B.S. or higher degree in Biology or demonstrated experience as lab manager or lab technician. The applicant should be a team player, fluent in English, and have a good working knowledge of molecular biology, and genetics, as well as basic computer skills.

Multiple Ph.D. positions are available in the Weir Lab (http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/~jweir/) in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (https://eeb.utoronto.ca/education/graduate/) at the Scarborough campus of University of Toronto (https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/biosci/). Our lab uses genomic, morphological and behavioural data to address how speciation occurs in tropical and temperate regions, with a special focus on birds.

Possible PhD projects available include:
  1. Genomic analyses of avian hybrid zones in Amazonian and Canadian birds.
  2. Conservation genomics and phylogeography of New Zealand kiwi (using our dataset of 55 kiwi genomes).
  3. Comparative phylogeography and population genomics across multiple co-distributed avian species complexes to better understand biogeographic drivers of diversification in boreal and Amazonian regions.
  4. Analyses of rates of avian colour and song evolution across latitudinal gradients.
The positions would begin in September 2023 and could involve field work (collecting genetic samples in the Amazon of Peru, Brazil, and Canada), lab work (generating genetic data sets using next generation sequencing methods that sample broadly across the genome), and bioinformatic analyses (mining genomic data).

In addition, students can pursue graduate projects in any of the key research areas of the lab and exceptional students may wish to pursue their own projects.

Contrato de dos años como asistente de investigación en biodiversidad de anfibios y reptiles de Melanesia 🐢🐍🦎🐸

Western Melanesia (including New Guinea) sits at the crossroads of Asia and Australia and is one of the most interesting, puzzling, and understudied hyper diverse regions on Earth. Clarifying how tectonic movements have sundered or joined different Melanesian landforms in the past several million years is key to understanding the origins of this biotic diversity. The Research Assistant will generate data to help us investigate how the diversity and evolutionary history of the five major geological landforms that comprise most of western Melanesia have impacted evolution of that region's biota and to identify those ancient insular landmasses critical in the origin of lineages that colonised and radiated across New Guinea, Australia, and/or insular Asia. The project will use herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) to address these evolutionary questions. The research will help to replace the outdated, unidirectional "out-of-New-Guinea" model for origins of Pacific biodiversity with a more dynamic and nuanced understanding that ancient, yet under-appreciated, land areas in Melanesia have long been important in shaping biotic evolution in the broader region. The project will use a combination of traditional sequencing methods alongside ultra-conserved elements from fresh and historic museum samples (aka archival DNA) and analyse these data with respect to new geological models to be generated by a project partner.

We are seeking to appoint a research assistant to help study the Origins of Western Melanesian Diversity on a 24 month, fixed-term contract. This project is funded by a joint NERC-NSF grant to Dr Simon Maddock (University of Wolverhampton, UK) and Dr Fred Kraus (University of Michigan, USA). The position will be based in the School of Sciences at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. You will possess the skills and knowledge to generate high-quality molecular sequence data.

You will have completed an MSc in biological sciences or an equivalent subject and have experience of molecular and phylogenetic methods. You will be responsible for generating sequence data (Sanger and sequence capture), analysing data, co-supervising lab work by undergraduate and postgraduate students, and, if interested, disseminating research. Good communication and organisational skills are essential attributes.

Phylogenomics and evolution of speciose desert rodents (genera: Gerbillus)

We are looking for an enthusiastic student / researcher to join project and expeditions to the Sahara to collect data and accomplish research / PhD thesis. The selected candidate will apply with the team for an independent research position / PhD scholarship. Several financing opportunities exist within the supervisor team institutions (see below).

Ongoing climate change, and extreme weather events, raised concern for species survival throughout the world. Some organisms have long coped with those problems, by adapting to new conditions and seeking shelter in suitable patchy areas. Therefore a promising approach to predict the future of the species is to first reconstruct its evolutionary past. North Africa has been exposed to frequent, and repeated, climatic oscillations. Therefore, the Sahara desert can serve as a laboratory to study how species respond to climate change and extreme conditions. We study speciose Gerbillus rodents (estimated > 50 species) that inhabit arid habitats and deserts. Due to remoteness of the area evolutionary history and ecology of Saharan inhabitants has been rarely studied. Our previous research showed high cryptic diversity within Gerbillus rodents, and suggested ecological processes involved in diversification.

With field work in remote and distinct geographic locations, expected to host endemic and rare lineages and species, and sequencing of historical museum samples, this project aims in reconstructing phylogenetic history (phylogenomics) to study biogeography and mechanisms of diversification in harsh and fluctuating desert conditions.

Short term contract (3 months), Steppe Bird Phylogenomics 

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to join our Conservation Genetics team to develop pilot phylogenomic datasets for certain clades of African/Asian steppe birds of conservation concern. The position is ideally suited for an early career scientist contemplating further graduate study in conservation genomics/evolutionary biology, especially those interested in improving their knowledge of wet lab and bioinformatics methodologies that result in the generation of genome-wide phylogenomic markers using multiple reduced-representation approaches.

The ideal candidate has passion and curiosity for arid land birds, avian conservation, and/or the biogeography of steppe ecosystems. Prior experience with next-generation sequencing methodologies, systematic biology, and basic bioinformatics is a plus. The position is contemplated for someone with Master's level experience, but qualified applicants with undergraduate (Bsc.) degrees are encouraged to apply. 

The goal of short term contract positions in the Conservation Genetics teams is to generate pilot data/proof of concept for emerging research in biodiversity genomics in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region with the goal of creating promising new research areas for our group; as such, some successful projects may have the possibility of becoming converted into funded graduate student projects, as funding allows. 

This is a three-month position based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, starting around 10 March 2022. The incumbent will receive round trip transportation to Abu Dhabi, room and board at the National Avian Research Center (NARC), as well as a monthly stipend. The intern will join a growing, international team of conservation genomicists and ecologists. The future employee will work in a brand new, state of the art, conservation genomics laboratory located at the NARC under the close supervision of the laboratory head.

The Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) was founded in 2008 as a joint Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). It is located in Barcelona (Spain), in front of the Mediterranean.

  • Lead efforts in the lab to develop methods and resources for non-model organisms, and use these resources and pipelines to address novel questions in genome assembly and annotation, phylogenomics and comparative genomics.
  • Work closely with the other team members to advise and help on analysis of sequencing data and other biological 'big data'.
  • Manage the computational resources of the lab, including data storage, computing resources and databases.

About you:
  • PhD in evolutionary biology, computational biology, bioinformatics or a related field, or a Masters degree with at least 3 years of experience with bioinformatics methods.
  • Excellent programming skills in languages commonly used in bioinformatics (such as Python or R). 
  • Fluency with Linux shell scripting and high performance computing.
  • Strong background in computational and evolutionary biology.

The Metazoa Phylogenomics Lab at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology

About IBE:

The Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) was founded in 2008 as a joint
Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Pompeu
Fabra University (UPF). It is located in Barcelona (Spain), in front of the

The mission of the IBE is to address biodiversity studies describing
functional and evolutionary genomics at all levels of observation:

About the Metazoa Phylogenomics Lab:

The overarching goal of the lab is to understand how animals reshape their
genomes to generate their vast diversity and to adapt to the different
environments. For that, we generate and interrogate genomic and
transcriptomic data through the lens of phylogenomics and comparative
genomics. Our favorite creatures are arthropods and annelids, but our
interest often transcends the level of phylum to understand animal genome
evolution at a macroevolutionary scale. We are committed to maintaining a

Rosa Fern芍ndez joined IBE as a Group Leader in January 2020, so this is a
chance to help build a lab from the ground up and contribute your knowledge

Biodiversity and Evolution Program at IBE. We are currently funded by the
Spanish Ministry of Science and by an ERC Starting Grant to understand the
genomic basis of terrestrialization across animals.

About the role:

As a Research Assistant, your role will be to manage the lab's day to day
affairs, including managing a wet molecular lab. You will be in charge of
the wet lab organization and experiments, which will include DNA/RNA
extractions, library preparation and sequencing (Illumina and Nanopore),
and managing bacterial cultures (for the protein engineering experiments).
You will be in charge of contacting vendors and placing orders and help the
PI with grant administration (ie, help process invoices, etc.). You may be
asked to supervise and mentor others in the lab with experiments and tasks,
including postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Depending on your
project involvement, you may also be asked to help prepare or edit
manuscripts (for which you would receive authorship credit where
appropriate) and talks for presentations.

The ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate will have at least a BSc (undergraduate) degree in life
sciences with wet lab experience. A Master's or PhD in life sciences or
equivalent experience is desirable. You will have experience with molecular
biology and genetics techniques (ideally including DNA and RNA extraction,
library preparation for genome/transcriptome sequencing, Nanopore
sequencing, and bacterial cultures), strong record-keeping skills (e.g. lab
notebook, collections maintenance, data storage and organisation) and a
strong command of written and spoken English. You'll also be comfortable
maintaining the lab on a day to day basis, including developing standard
operating procedures, ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies,
managing and disposing of chemical inventory safely.

You will be comfortable working both independently and as a member of
a larger team, as well as having good time management, attention to detail,
and prioritisation skills. You'll be comfortable collaborating with
international and local colleagues from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
You will be able to travel locally and internationally for e.g.
collaborations or meetings.

Postdoc filogenómico en el Museo de Historia Natural de Estocolmo

Postdoctoral position in phylogenomics

A two-year postdoctoral position is available in the Department of
Zoology, Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm. The position is
supervised by Prof. Ulf Jondelius, as a part of the project "Evolution
of Xenacoelomorpha, an ancient animal group " funded by the Swedish
Reseach Council. The goal of this project is to perform an analysis of
phylogeny, evolutionary rates and gene content of the marine animal group
Xenacoelomorpha using transcriptomic and genomic data. The successful
candidate will manage and analyse transcriptome and genome sequencing
data, perform phylogenomic analyses and write papers. There will be
opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching and supervision
of students.

Qualifications
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of
research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree
or an equivalent degree from another country. The degree should
have been completed no more than three years before the deadline
for applications. In the appointment process, special attention
will be given to research skills. We are looking for candidates with
primarily dry-lab skills in the fields of genomics, transcriptomics
and phylogenomics including experience with managing, processing and
analysing next-generation sequencing data. Specific experience with
metazoan evolution and microscopic invertebrates constitutes an advantage,
but is not strictly necessary. The candidate must be highly motivated,
creatively thinking with a collaborative attitude, have strong writing
skills and a record of high-quality scientific publications. Excellent
English language skills both written and spoken, are a requisite.

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years,

The project will be part of a larger effort with international collaborators in the UK and USA that aims to develop methods that efficiently and accurately analyse data streams being generated by laboratories around the world. Open position: PhD fellowship on the phylogenetics & phylogeography of petrels

Context:
The phylogeography of many seabird species remains poorly known. They are highly mobile organisms supposedly free from geographical barriers to dispersal, which should theoretically prevent population differentiation through isolation. However, population differentiation within a species can be significant despite high mobility (Friesen et al. 2007). Many species of seabirds are highly philopatric, partially or completely removing the effects of dispersion. Petrels (family Procellariidae) are among those species. Despite a large number ecological studies on petrels, little is known of their phylogenetic relationships and their phylogeography, and many taxonomic issues are yet to be resolved.
The overall objective of the proposed project is to study the phylogenetic and phylogeographic characteristics of the Procellariidae to better describe their current distribution, and attempt to characterize the population differentiation processes that took place among species in this family. From a large collection of field and museum samples (genetic samples of nearly 4,000 individuals from 44 different species; morphological data from 12,000 museum specimens already available) and behavioral data (vocalization data for most species), the aim of this PhD project will be to improve our understanding of procellariid evolution and biogeography by selecting a few emblematic case studies (eg. Speciation radiation in the genus Pterodroma; species complex or super species in either Pterodroma or Puffinus) and by expanding already available data sets. For instance, whether retained ancestral genetic variation is masking contemporary barriers to gene flow, and how past population bottleneck contribute to contemporary genetic structure, could be evaluated using coalescent-based methods. This work will be strongly anchored in conservation biology, since half of the petrel species are currently threatened.

Postdoc in Antarctic plant phylogenomics (South Africa)

An exciting postdoctoral position to investigate Antarctic terrestrial plant phylogenomics is available at Stellenbosch University (http://academic.sun.ac.za/cib/team/academic/jleroux.asp) and the
University of Johannesburg (http://www.molzoolab.co.za/), South Africa; collaborative project. The successful applicant will be based at Stellenbosch University, but will be expected to spend some time at the University of Johannesburg. The envisaged research will address a major question in modern biology: how has plant life evolved and spread around the Antarctic region, both in the past and currently? This research forms part of an international collaboration: "A Functional Biogeography of the Antarctic (AFBA, see http://antarcticbiogeography.org)" as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). ACE involves 22 projects, 55 researchers and 19 countries and is the first project of the newly created Swiss Polar Institute.

The successful candidate will be responsible for plant phylogenomic
research on selected taxa from the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Islands.

Using the latest phylogenomic and analytical approaches, the research
aims to shed light on the history of plant life in the region, how it
will respond to environmental change, and what can be done to secure its
future.

Only candidates with demonstrable (i.e. published) skills in next
generation sequencing data analyses with an emphasis on phylogenomics
will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with previous
postdoctoral research experience and an excellent academic track record
(i.e. publications in international journals). Successful candidates
will be fully funded for 1 y ear, to be extended for an additional 1 to 2
years depending on satisfactory performance. An attractive annual
bursary will be offered along with additional expenses for research,
international travel and subsistence, and conference attendance.

Postdoctoral Fellow - Insect Phylogenomics (Australia)

The Systematics and Collections Program within CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences
comprises staff and collections resources (traditional research
collections, cryofrozen tissues, sound, data) of the Australian National
Insect Collection (ANIC) and Australian National Wildlife Collection.
Recent years have seen growth in molecular and evolutionary research.
Taxonomic and biogeographical work on Australian terrestrial insects now
embraces morphological and molecular systematics, phylogeography and
population genetics as well as modern approaches to morphology such as
micro-CT Scanning. We wish to continue this growth and see its relevance
maintained with respect to current rapid growth in genomics.  A solid
grounding in collections is still seen as essential to this work.

This is an opportunity for a molecular systematist with a special interest
in insects and phylogenomics to make a substantial contribution to ANIC,
the largest and most significant collection of Australian insects in the
world. The collection is housed in CSIROĒs Ecosystem Sciences, which also
conducts research on many other aspects of insect biology (e.g., ecology,
biocontrol, biosecurity and insects as model genomic systems).
