Position overview Position title: Assistant/Associate Professor of Ocean Sciences
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (nine-month basis).
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: July 1, 2023, with the academic year beginning in September 2023. Degree requirements must be met by July 1, 2023, for employment effective July 1, 2023.
Review timeline: An initial ranking of candidates will be done through a holistic review of the application package for each candidate. A selected group (~8-12) will then be invited for a zoom/online interview during which each candidate will be sent a number of questions ahead of time and asked these in a formal setting in a prescribed period of time (e.g., 30 minutes). Candidates will then be ranked, and the search committee will choose candidates for in-person interviews, seminars, and meetings with faculty and students.

Position description
The Ocean Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for two positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure-track) level. We encourage applications from scientists working in the subdiscipline of biological oceanography with an emphasis on ocean microbiomes (first position) and marine ecology and food webs at intermediate trophic levels (second position), with a preference in both positions for a research program that emphasizes observational oceanography. We seek scholars seriously committed to applying inclusive undergraduate and graduate mentoring practices, and to applying inclusive teaching practices of undergraduate and graduate level courses in oceanography and in specialty courses in their field of expertise. The successful candidates will have considerable breadth in Biological Oceanography. We encourage applications from candidates who incorporate environmental justice in their research, teaching, and/or community engagement and professional activities. We also seek evidence of an ability to mentor students and postdoctoral associates and to contribute broadly to the university and the profession.
The preferred candidates will be expected to develop and maintain vigorous research programs that complement existing departmental strengths in biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography. For the first position, preferred areas of interest include leading-edge research in the broad field of ‘omics (genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, proteomic) to understand fundamental and/or applied biological or biogeochemical processes in marine systems. For the second position, preferred areas of interest include trophic ecology of organisms from planktonic (protist) to mid-level (e.g., forage fish) predators, including the distribution, population dynamics, and adaptive capacity of organisms and ecosystems to provide mechanistic insights for how the oceanic biosphere changes in response to, for example, deoxygenation, acidification, marine heatwaves, and human exploitation. Both positions will have the opportunity to shape the direction of the newly established Coastal Resilience Initiative at UC Santa Cruz, that aims to build resilience and sustainability in the face of growing coastal hazards.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Doctorate (or equivalent foreign degree) in oceanography, biological oceanography, marine ecology, fisheries science or equivalent to the positions. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by July 1, 2023.
