Main Description: The Muscle Physiology in health and disease lab led by Prof. Marco Sandri is looking for 1 post-doc position to join us. Our team is dedicated to the identification of signaling pathways that control protein breakdown and protein synthesis and particularly on the discovery and characterization of novel genes that are involved in autophagy-lysosome and ubiquitin-proteasome systems. Recently our laboratory has discovered the novel gene Mytho involved in autophagic pathway being important in promoting healthy ageing and being a crucial regulator of skeletal muscle integrity. Our research was published in 2 different high impact factor journals (Nat.Comm and JCI) and was a topic of interest for a TV documentary, national journals and politic institutions!

Project Description: For this position, YOU will be joining an ongoing project in the context of identify the consequences of MYTHO depletion in the whole organism (total KO) in order to mimic genetic disease condition in mice. The candidate will investigate the organs most affected and understanding whether there might be other functions of the protein that are still unknown. For example, is MYTHO involved in DNA damage repair? Is MYTHO contributing to a good mitochondria homeostasis? Is MYTHO involved in cancer? How is the metabolism affected? Your contribution will involve in vitro and in vivo experiments, with also a deeper investigation of the molecular mechanisms of this novel protein.

  • PhD in Biological/Medical Sciences, Molecular/Cellular Biology, Biochemistry or equivalent (motivated graduate students interested in a PhD program are also welcome to apply)
  • Trackable experience in mouse experimentation
  • Enthusiastic, creative, rigorous, collaborative, and autonomous mindset

PhD Opportunity in Behavioral Ecology at University of Nevada, Reno

The Baldan lab at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking a PhD graduate student to join their team in spring or fall 2025. This exciting opportunity is ideal for students interested in evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, parental care, and sexual conflict.

Program Details

  • Collaborations with University of Madrid, Spain and University of Padova, Italy

Preferred Experience: Bird handling, animal husbandry, and/or neuroendocrine lab work

Project Description

The research focuses on family life as a fascinating social system, exploring how two parents cooperate to raise offspring while navigating evolutionary conflicts of interest ('sexual conflict'). This conflict has led to various parental care strategies, from biparental care to female-only and male-only care.

Research Topics

  1. Parental Response Dynamics: Plan and execute behavioral field experiments to understand the rules parents adopt when negotiating offspring care.
  2. Neuroendocrine Mechanisms: Study the hormonal and physiological regulation of mating and parental strategies using the neuroendocrine lab at UNR.
  3. Climate Change Impact: Investigate the effect of climate warming on alpine bird reproduction using long-term breeding datasets and active population monitoring.

About the University and Location

  • University of Nevada, Reno is an R1 institution
  • Biology Department features 40 faculty members with recognized, funded research programs
  • 75 graduate students and active undergraduate research participation
