Becas de ornitología Francisco Suárez



La beca Francisco Suárez nace en 2023 con el objetivo de fomentar el interés ornitológico entre los jóvenes científicos y científicas, y aumentar el conocimiento sobre las aves de la Comunidad de Madrid. Por ello, SEO-Monticola junto a la familia de Francisco Suárez convocan dos ayudas anuales (cuantía máxima de 300 euros para cada beca) para financiar, en parte, algún estudio básico sobre la ecología y conservación de las aves en la Comunidad de Madrid.

La beca debe su nombre a Quico (Francisco Suárez), quién fue profesor de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid durante más de dos décadas, y pionero en la Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental y en la defensa y conservación de los ecosistemas y aves esteparias.

La beca está destinada a estudiantes matriculados en grados o máster, independientemente de la edad y del centro de educación, que en el momento de realizar la solicitud no formen parte de la plantilla (contratado o becado) de ninguna universidad o centro de investigación.

Los proyectos que se soliciten tienen el único requisito de que han de realizarse dentro de la comunidad de Madrid y que se realicen durante el año natural para el cual se solicite la beca (2025 en este caso).

Our team works across Southern Costa Rica, connecting and protecting landscapes and biodiversity from the ridges of the Talamanca mountain to the coral reefs of the Golfo Dulce and the Pacific Ocean. Be part of our conservation successes and come get your boots dirty in one of Earth’s greatest wildernesses.

Osa Conservation’s Movement Ecology Program

Broadly, the project aims to develop and use novel animal tracking technology to increase our understanding of the movement ecology of scavenger networks, and the predators which drive them, in south and central America. It involves the capture and deployment of tracking equipment on cathartidae vultures and large cat species, taking biological samples and implementing a variety of different surveys to estimate the density and determine the ecological roles of scavenging communities.

Long-term intern activities, training and experience

This is an opportunity to learn more about the scavenger networks in a tropical rainforest, and document their importance via photographs and videos but also to tell the stories of the passionate biologists, conservationists and veterinarians who dedicate their lives to this physically and mentally challenging work. Long-term internships are designed to empower and immerse early-career conservationists in one of the most important neotropical landscapes on Earth while developing crucial career skills. Come live in a tropical rainforest and learn, explore and achieve alongside an outstanding community of conservationists, biologists, media-specialists, educators, community outreach leaders, and more to fill knowledge gaps and push the frontier of tropical conservation. This team will provide one-on-one mentorship, and equip interns with tangible career skills to produce effective conservation communication.

The Scavenger Networks Storytelling Field Fellow will: Experience training in capture and monitoring techniques by experienced biologists and veterinarians for vultures and predators; this includes camera trapping and radio tracking.
Execute the production of 15-20 high quality photos to tell the story of each of the scavenger network projects: Radio tracking: What are animals doing in these locations?
Vulture Photobox: Exploring the colors of vulture heads and why these colors change?
Vertebrate Exclusion: What happens to dead things if vultures disappear?
Vulture mark-recapture: Using ground-break technologies to estimate population densities
Carcass Provisioning: What is the tropical rainforest scavenger network
Farmers: Perspectives and relationships with scavengers and predators
Support Conservation Videographer - Ian Rock in producing content for a youtube series where science meets reality TV. Showcasing the species, conservation, science and team members of the movement ecology program. This will include programmed filming sessions and acting in the moment as things happen and develop.
Assist the movement ecology team in designing and creating materials for an outreach campaign for each species/species group we are tracking with GPS technologies [currently vultures, tapirs and wildcats] to be used in workshops, presentations and media campaigns.
Assist the movement ecology team in all field activities with a special focus on community outreach activities.
Produce 3 posts a month for your personal social media account to showcase the life of a storyteller/ conservation communicator living in the field.
Assist the Movement Ecology Team in producing 2 social media posts a month to showcase stories from the field and the big impact of the work for Osa Conservations media platforms - twitter, instagram and facebook.
Create workshops and working sessions to develop the Movement Ecology teams communication skills and generate an excitement for media creation to allow for bigger impact in the youtube series and program social media posts.

In addition to Movement Programactivities, long-term field interns will interact with and build skills alongside Osa Conservation’s wide breadth of programs. You will have the opportunity to: Release baby sea turtles, monitor nesting mothers, and relocate threatened nests.
Plant and monitor native tree restoration efforts.
Trial new rewilding techniques for tropical rainforest restoration.
Install and organize data from camera traps, acoustic devices and citizen science apps for vital wildlife monitoring across the Osa region.
Practice regenerative farming techniques to grow sustainable produce.
Develop scientific communication skills and learn to produce cutting-edge stories from one of Earth’s greatest wilderness areas.

Long-term field fellowship details:

Long-term field fellowships range from 6-12 months. Interns live alongside the team at the Osa Conservation Campus (OCC), located at the heart of Osa’s tropical rainforest. The OCC is home to our top-tier biological station, boasting a new research lab and classroom, regenerative farm, arboretum, restoration experiment, and over 20 km of trails through old-growth and secondary forests, mangroves, rivers and pristine coastlines.

During your internship, all food and accommodation will be provided. At the OCC, you will live in the middle of the rainforest in basic shared-living accommodation. You will be provided with groceries to cook meals in your living quarters as part of a team.

Department of Botany Travel Awards are presented annually to support the study of collections in
the United States National Herbarium. Typically, about four awards are made, each with an
allowance up to 4000 USD. Preference is given to students working on tropical plants. 

Cuatrecasas Award. This award commemorates the late Dr. José Cuatrecasas, who was associated
with the U.S. National Herbarium for over fifty years. He dedicated his career to the study of the
high elevation flora of northern South America, and he monographed or revised a variety of
neotropical angiosperm genera. 

Lyman B. & Ruth C. Smith Award. This award is intended to provide career development
opportunities for young scientists. The fellowship was created to honor the legacy of the late Dr.
Lyman B. Smith and his wife Ruth C. Smith. Dr. Smith, former Curator of Botany at the U.S.
National Herbarium, monographed several neotropical angiosperm families and contributed to
several flora projects of South America; his wife’s support was instrumental in his success. 

Harold E. Robinson & Vicki A. Funk Award. This award is restricted to the study of Asteraceae.
It honors the late Drs. Harold E. Robinson and Vicki A. Funk, both former Curators at the U.S.
National Herbarium, who devoted most of their careers to understanding the systematics and
phylogeny of this large and diverse family, especially in the Neotropics.

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to undertake research in seed and stress biology. Working with Kew’s seed and plant collections, you will pursue a research programme aligned to our ambitious strategy for Kew Science and Kew’s Manifesto for Change.

The successful candidate will help deliver the Trait Diversity and Function (TDF) Priority in Kew’s new science strategy. The overarching goal of TDF is to ‘understand plant and fungal traits, to aid conservation, increase resilience to global change, and explore their uses and benefits for human health and well-being.’

TDF will deliver this through 4 ambitious initiatives: Adaptation and Resilience; Biointeractions and Bioactive Molecules; Sustainable Agriculture; and Enhancing Survival. Working within the Seed and Stress Biology research group, this role will contribute primarily to Enhancing Survival.

Enhancing Survival has three deliverables that provide a framework for delivery of science. The research findings of the FLF in SSB may impact some or all of these deliverables:

1. The Kew Cryosphere (TKC) for research, training and biobanking, where scientists seek to understand and apply low temperature science to enhance ex situ conservation

2. TRAits for species Conservation and Environmental limits (TRACE), where we aim to understand oxygen, temperature and moisture stress tolerance for seed storage and use

Reporting to the Senior Research Leader for Seed and Stress Biology, you will have a relevant PhD in seed functional traits, stress biology or cryobiology, and their applications.

Your research programme will benefit from access to a broad range of equipment relevant to making advances in an understanding of low temperature science (including differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis and cryomicroscopy), biochemistry (time-domain NMR, GC-MS, HPLC) and molecular biology.

You will also have access to Kew’s world leading collection of seeds in the Millennium Seed Bank. A main objective of the Seed and Stress Biology Group is to understand traits to inform species conservation and environmental limits. We take a comparative approach to biodiversity science, aim to develop predictive models for seed responses and seek impact from our work globally.

The Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) opens one (01) Research Fellowship for a person with a Master Degree (Bolsa de Investigação não conducente à obtenção de grau académico para mestre), for applicants of any nationality, including stateless candidates, and holders of political refugee statute, in the scientific field of Biological Sciences, within the research project: CIRCNA/BRB/0156/2019, named as A-Fish-DNA-Scan “Cutting-edge DNA-based approaches for improved monitoring and management of fisheries resources along Magellan-Elcano´s Atlantic route” funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P./MCTES through national funding (PIDDAC).

This fellowship is intended for Master’s Degree holders that are enrolled in a non-academic degree course, integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution and developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units at the starting date of the fellowship.

The A-Fish-DNA-Scan project aims to develop and implement a DNA metabarcoding method for species profiling of ichthyoplankton, and to explore the utility of eDNA for monitoring marine fish communities. Specifically, the fellowship holder will be involved in the following tasks and objectives:

  1. Provide support in ichthyoplankton and eDNA sampling and sample processing 
  2. Field preparation and equipment maintenance for field surveys. 
  3. Taxonomic identification and processing of ichthyoplankton samples.
  4.  Contribute to the general lab maintenance.

Requirements for the application: Applicants must meet all the conditions stated below: 

  1. Have a master’s degree in Biology, Marine Biology and/or Ecology, Fisheries, Marine Sciences or similar area.
  2. Have a good knowledge of spoken and written English.
  3. This fellowship may only be granted to those who do not exceed, with the conclusion of the present fellowship contract, an accumulated period of two years in this type of fellowship, consecutive or otherwise, to be confirmed through the candidate’s CV and should be explicit in the motivation letter.
  4. The candidate must agree to enrol in a non-academic degree course offered by a higher education institution and developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units at the start of the fellowship. Enrolment at the time of application is not mandatory. 

 It is desirable that the applicants have experience in (as demonstrated in their Curriculum Vitae): 

  • Zooplankton sampling techniques.
  • Morphological identification of ichthyoplankton communities of coastal and estuarine areas.
Fellowship conditions: The fellowship will have an initial duration of 6 months, expected to start from December 2021 eventually renewed for periods of 3 months, or until the end of the project never exceeding a total maximum of 12 months. The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (KLI) in Klosterneuburg (Austria) announces 5 Writing-Up Fellowships for late-stage PhD students working on topics related to “Dealing with diversity in the life and sustainability sciences”.

The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (KLI) is an independent center of advanced studies in the life and sustainability sciences. The mission of the KLI is to enable scientific reasoning dedicated to understanding and sustaining life in its biological, cognitive, social, and cultural diversity. At the KLI, we are committed to contribute to addressing pressing social-environmental challenges of our time through inter- and transdisciplinary research. We especially support theoretical and conceptual research as well as philosophical and historical work in the life and sustainability sciences. In line with this mission, we recognize equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) as fundamental values of our institute. We believe that only if research institutions engage with the broadest spectrum of views, opinions and experiences will we be able to contribute to addressing the pressing societal and environmental challenges of our world through research.

Dealing with diversity in the life and sustainability sciences
Diversity is a fundamental and defining characteristic of life on Earth. Diversity comes in many interconnected forms: from human biological diversity (e.g., of morphologies and genomes) to cultural and cognitive diversity (e.g., of languages and knowledge systems) and biodiversity (e.g., of organisms, species, and entire ecosystems). In the history of life, these different manifestations of diversity have co-evolved over millions of years and, in the present, they still are inextricably interdependent. However, diversity is under threat on many fronts. On a daily basis, we experience an exponential loss of life forms, from species extinction to the disappearance of traditional and indigenous cultures. The increasing loss of diversity endangers the integrity of ecosystems, depletes the resources our societies rely on, and threatens the livelihood, especially, of the most vulnerable. Thus, a major imperative for research in the life and sustainability sciences is to learn how to deal with diversity in its different manifestations, from understanding diversity to preserving and fostering it.

This call aims to support an interdisciplinary cohort of late-stage PhD students whose work deals with diversity in the life and sustainability sciences. The 5 KLI Writing-up Fellowships are not restricted to specific topics or approaches. However, as A Home to Theory that Matters, the KLI will support projects that engage with theoretical and conceptual work in the life and sustainability sciences as well as philosophical, historical, and sociological work related to these fields. Though not exclusively, we look forward to receiving applications especially in the following research areas:

1. Theories and concepts to explain the evolution of human diversity:
Which theoretical and conceptual framings are needed to explain the plethora of phenotypes we see in human populations, today (from morphologies to individual and social behaviors to cognition, language, and cultures)? How can these framings help to integrate methodologies and evidence (e.g. morphological and genomic evidence) dealing with the multiplicity of factors (e.g. environmental, cultural, social) underpinning the emergence of biological and cultural diversity in human populations? How can we evaluate the most plausible explanations that account for human variability as well as the processes and factors involved in human evolution? What forms of reasoning and methodological approaches are needed to make sense of new data (e.g., from morphological to genomic)? What are the ethical and philosophical implications of theories and approaches from the past (e.g., eugenic and race theories) used to explain human evolution? How do legacies from such approaches influence current research and how can scientists deal with them in their own work? What theories and conceptual approaches can contribute to overcome these legacies?

2. Theories and concepts to understand and foster diversity of life forms:
Which theories and conceptual framings do we need to capture and explain the interdependencies and co-evolution of diversity of life forms, such as cognitive, cultural, social, and biological diversity? How can we explain the interconnection between the loss of cognitive or cultural diversity and the loss of other species or ecosystems diversity? How can we define and decide upon parameters, indicators, and concepts to assess diversity of life forms? Which frameworks and research approaches (e.g., ecological models; evolutionary models) can support efforts to preserve and foster diversity of life forms? Which kind of framings can support actions aiming to preserve and foster diversity of life forms locally and globally? How can we integrate insights from socio-economic sciences as well as social-ecological research and transformation studies to value and foster diversity of life forms? How can theories enhance research approaches (e.g. inter- and transdisciplinary research) to be able to value and foster diversity of life forms? And which theories and approaches can help predict future scenarios of diversity of life forms (e.g. biodiversity) on Earth?

3. Theories and concepts about diversity, equity, and inclusion in the life and sustainability sciences:
How do the life and sustainability sciences engage with issues of diversity of knowledge systems? How can work in the philosophy, history, and social studies of science support efforts to deal with these issues? How can such efforts be non-hierarchical, acknowledging the asymmetries of power that animate engagement with non-Western knowledge systems? How can work in the life and sustainability sciences engage with postcolonial theory and indigenous knowledge to decolonize research? How can feminist epistemology, queer theories, and intersectional studies nurture and inform the way inter and transdisciplinary collaborations deal with difference and identity in these fields? How do the environmental sciences engage with questions of climate and social justice? How has research in this field accommodated concerns based on inequities related to, for instance, class, caste, race, and gender in its analytical approaches? How can the life and sustainability sciences engage with and nurture subaltern voices? What theoretical framings can help to include the voices of people with different abilities in the life and sustainability sciences?

Who is encouraged to apply?
The 5 KLI Writing-up fellowships aim to support doctoral students in the final stage of their PhD research. Writing-up fellowships are individual fellowships awarded to work independently on the applicant’s research project supervised by their advisor in the home university. The 5 fellowships are especially well-suited for two categories of PhD students:
Those who have completed empirical research and wish to use the Writing-up fellowship to elaborate on the (conceptual, epistemological, and methodological) underpinnings and implications of their work.
Those whose research deals with the historical, philosophical, and conceptual foundations of research in the disciplines mentioned above in relation to diversity.
Both categories of PhD students should be interested in and eager to extend their research perspective by drawing on novel concepts of evolutionary theorizing based on long-standing work done at the KLI.

Details of the fellowships:
Duration: KLI Writing-up fellowships are awarded for a period of maximum 6 months. The minimum fellowship duration is three months.
Starting date: Fellowships must start within the calendar year of 2021. Ideally, a start date in September/October 2021 is encouraged.
Eligibility criteria:
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program.
Applicants are in the final stages of their PhD work (as certified by their advisor).
Applicants should remain in close exchange with their PhD advisor.

Being part of the KLI Resident Fellowship Program: Students awarded a KLI Writing-up fellowship will be part of the KLI Resident Fellowship Program and will enjoy all benefits connected to this position.

Position Description

The Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University invites applications or nominations for the Sarah and Daniel Hrdy Visiting Fellowship in Conservation Biology. The Hrdy Fellowship is open to researchers at any rank; we encourage applications from both established scientists as well as those who have recently received their Ph.D. The fellowship supports visits of either one or two semesters.

The Hrdy Fellowship is awarded to an individual who will engage in scientific study in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. Recipients of this fellowship are expected to have a strong and transformative effect on the study of conservation biology at Harvard University. Applicants from any research field within conservation biology are welcome to apply. Examples of previous Hrdy Fellows has included conservation paleobiology, marine evolution and conservation, conservation biology of amphibians and reptiles, and the impact of human activities on the environment. The Hrdy Fellowship award provides a stipend of up to $80,000 per year, depending on professional status, need, and duration of the fellowship. Modest support is also available for research and travel costs. Hrdy Fellows are ordinarily employees of Harvard University during their tenure and are eligible for health insurance benefits. Fellows must be in residence for the full term of the Fellowship.
Primarily, the Hrdy Fellow is expected to engage in leading-edge research, where possible in collaboration with members of the Harvard community. Additional responsibilities include a public lecture by the Fellow in any area of conservation biology. Applications are sought from researchers whose work focuses on contemporary issues in conservation biology. FAPESP’s Post-Doctoral fellowship is aimed at distinguished researchers with a recent doctorate degree and a successful research track record. The fellowship enables the development of research within higher education and research institutions located in the State of São Paulo.

Post-doctoral fellowships are available within FAPESP funded research projects, when calls for applications are issued internationally, or as individual fellowships requested on demand. In the former, positions are advertised in the FAPESP website (www.fapesp.br/oportunidades) and candidates are selected through international competition. In the latter, the proposal for a fellowship must represent an addition to a pre-existent research group and should be developed in association with faculty in higher education and research institutions in Sao Paulo.

In both cases, applications should highlight the contribution that the development of the proposed research project and the previous training of the candidate will bring to the group. In particular, the connection between the research group’s ongoing projects and the activities proposed by the fellowship holder should be highlighted.

The candidates for these post-doctoral fellowships should have completed their doctoral programs no more than seven years prior to application and the proposed research project should be strongly linked to the work being developed by the proposed host group in Sao Paulo.


1. Modalities of PD fellowships

a. Post-doctorate fellowships linked to Research Projects
Major FAPESP funded research projects (e.g. Thematic Projects, RIDCs, Young Investigator Awards and the Biota Program) can be granted post-doctoral fellowships as part of their research budget. In this case, the Principal Investigator must open an international call and carry out a competitive selection of candidates before submitting the name of chosen researcher for FAPESP’s validation. Post-doctorate fellowships in this category can only be applied for when a position is announced.

b. On demand Post-doctorate fellowships
Applications for Post-Doctoral fellowships which are not connected to ongoing FAPESP funded projects should be developed by the candidate in association with faculty in higher education and research institutions in Sao Paulo. The research project must represent an addition to a pre-existent research group. The application must be presented to FAPESP by the supervisor.


2. Duration of PD Fellowship
PD Fellowships are granted for 24 months and can be renewed for 12 months. When associated with FAPESP funded larger projects (e.g. Thematic Projects, RIDCs, Young Investigator Awards and the Biota Program), fellowships can last up to 48 months, provided it is within the term of the project to which it is linked.

Fellowships are not awarded for periods shorter than six months.


3. Applications

Any time of year.


4. Time frames for analysis

Each line of funding defines the standard time frame necessary for applications to complete the evaluation process. FAPESP is committed to adhering to these time frames, although it cannot guarantee compliance in every case.

On demand post-doctorate fellowship applications that receive a favorable assessment from the ad hoc reviewers will be put forward for a monthly comparative analysis session. On average, the process of analysis takes around 100 days.

For post-doctorate fellowships within larger projects, the principal investigator must open an international call for the position. Time frames vary according to each research group. Once the candidate is chosen and is submitted to FAPESP’s approval, the validation process takes at most 20 days. It is important to note that FAPESP may not award the fellowship to the researcher selected by the principal investigator of the larger FAPESP funded project. In this case, the call for applications may be re-opened.


5. Fellowship components

The Post-Doctorate fellowship includes a monthly stipend and research contingency funds.

a) The stipend of the FAPESP post-doctoral fellowship is R$ 6.819,30 (from April 1st, 2016).

b) The Research Contingency Funds are intended for use in activities developed by the Fellowship holder, strictly related to the fellowship research project, during the term of the fellowship. The funds are equivalent to 15 per cent of the annual value of the fellowship. Together with the Scientific Report, the Fellowship holder should report on the use of the Research Contingency Funds. This Report should be approved by the Supervisor.


6. Candidate’s requirements

a. The candidate should have concluded a doctorate less than seven years before the beginning of the PD fellowship.

b. The fellowship demands full time dedication to the research project (except under conditions outlined in resolution PR Nº 13/2009, 15 July 2009).

c. The fellowship holder may not hold any formal or informal employment nor receive, during the term of the fellowship, a fellowship from another entity, salary or remuneration deriving from the exercise of activities of whatever nature (except under conditions outlined in the decree PR Nº 13/2009, 15 July 2009).


7. Candidate’s obligations

a. Full dedication to research (except under conditions outlined in the resolution PR Nº 13/2009, 15 July 2009).

b. Not to receive a fellowship from another entity, salary or remuneration deriving from the exercise of activities of any nature (except under conditions outlined in the resolution PR Nº 13/2009, 15 July 2009).

c. To consult FAPESP before accepting any financial support from any other funding source, public or private, for the development of the research project that concerns the fellowship awarded.

d. Not to make any modifications to the project (initial plan, dates etc.) without the prior consent of the Foundation.

e. To submit scientific reports and reports on the application of the Research Contingency Funds within the time frames laid out in the Terms of Award (TA), accompanied by the requested documentation.

f. Not to absent himself from the institution in which he is developing his research project, except to carry out field research or a research placement, for a limited time and with the authorization of FAPESP and with the supervisor’s endorsement.

g. To refer to the support from FAPESP in theses, articles, books, abstracts of presentations in meetings and any other type of publication or form of outreach activities that result, wholly or in part, from the fellowship.


8. Supervisor’s requirements

a. The supervisor should hold the title of doctor or an equivalent qualification, as well as competence and productivity in research in the area of the submitted project, as judged by his career history, as well as availability, measured by the work regime and the current number of students under supervision.

b. The supervisor should be formally attached to a research institution in the State of São Paulo.

c. FAPESP does not award any fellowships in situations where the supervisor has a close family relationship with the candidate. It is understood that a close family relationship represents a situation of potential conflict of interest, which compromises the indispensable impartial perception in the analysis of fellowship holder’s qualifications and performance.

d. To provide merit reviews, free of charge, when requested by FAPESP on projects within his/her specialty and within the time frames established by the Foundation.

e. To be up-to-date with FAPESP (handing in reviewed proposals, delivery of scientific reports and submission of accounts) or risk having funds freezed.


9. Intellectual Property

Researchers undertake to verify, at anytime, whether the development of the project is producing or might produce results that are potentially the object of any form of registration of intellectual property rights (e.g. Patents, Industrial Designs, Softwares).

In this case, a disclosure communication should be made to FAPESP and to the University’s TTO, before publication in journals, congress annals or theses, or any form of outreach that may bring the invention into the public domain.

Invention patents, utility models, industrial designs or any other form of registration of intellectual property rights deriving from the execution of the project should carry the name of FAPESP as co-owner, unless University has a TTO qualified by FAPESP.

The registration, at the request of the grantee, could be eventually financed by FAPESP, through its Support for Intellectual Property Program, managed by the Patenting and Licensing Office (Nuplitec), if the Foundation judges this to be convenient. In any case, the net income deriving from the sale or licensing will be shared with FAPESP, in accordance to an Intellectual Property agreement between FAPESP and University.

10. Reports

All recipients of a PD fellowship must deliver at least one scientific report on the development of their research project. Number and time frame for reports vary according to the duration of the fellowship:

a) Fellowships awarded for a period of 18-24 months: a Scientific Report should be submitted, on the tenth day of the month following the termination of the fellowship. In the case of an application for an extension, the report should be submitted 6 months prior to the date on which the fellowship ends.

b) Fellowships awarded for less than 18 months: a Scientific Report will be required on the tenth day of the month following the ending of the fellowship. In the case of a request for extension beyond the initial period awarded, the report should be submitted 2 months before the date the fellowship ends.

c) Fellowship holders should submit progress reports which should be read and commented on by the supervisor, along with the report submission form (www.fapesp.br/sage) Reports are sent by FAPESP to reviewers for analysis and recommendations.

We are proud to announce the 2017 – 2018 MASNA Student Scholarships. This year there are two scholarships available; one $4,000 scholarship for a college undergraduate student and one $4,000 scholarship for a college graduate student

To be eligible for a $4,000 MASNA Student Scholarship, an applicant must be a current/entering undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university.

The student must have declared a major/focus or have intent to declare a major/focus in one of the marine science disciplines.

Selection will be based upon the student’s academic history and the student’s contributions and demonstrated commitment to the marine aquarium hobby.

Successful MASNA Student Scholarship recipients must be able to travel to MACNA 2017 in order to receive the scholarship. Funding is available to assist each of the chosen applicants in attending MACNA.

North American students, no matter where they are studying in the world, as well as students from abroad, who are studying in North America, are eligible, as long as they attend/plan to attend an accredited college or university. MASNA recognizes these locations as being in North America.

The MASNA Student Scholarships are in U.S. Dollars.

Our ideal scholarship candidate:

1: Is seeking a degree in a marine science field.

2: Is active in the marine aquarium hobby.

3: Will be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in 2017 – 2018.

4: Has a GPA above 2.5 / 4.0.

The 2017 – 2018 MASNA Student Scholarships will be publicly awarded to the recipients at the 29th annual Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA) in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 25 – 27, 2017.

Summer research fellowship (USA)

PLE Early Career Fellowship
Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology

The University of Pittsburgh's Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology (PLE) is pleased to offer a summer research fellowship of $10,000 plus up to three months of station fees and residency costs for the primary investigator (PI). PLE is a vibrant research and education facility located on Lake Pymatuning in Northwest Pennsylvania. PLE's research facilities are spread across 350 acres and include access to a variety of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Its 10,000+ square feet of laboratory facilities include a field laboratory adjacent to an open field that can be used for large-scale replicated experiments, a modern molecular laboratory, and facilities for animal, plant and aquatic studies.

This opportunity is open to researchers holding PhD degrees in any science
discipline that can benefit from PLE's resources
(http://www.biology.pitt.edu/facilities/pymatuning). The purpose of the
fellowship is to permit researchers to explore new projects or collect
preliminary data. Fellowship funds can be used at the PI's discretion to
facilitate the research but not for compensation. Preference will be given
to individuals and projects with the potential to develop into long-term
research activities at PLE. We especially encourage applications from
individuals in the postdoctoral or early faculty phases of their careers but
researchers holding PhD degrees at all stages of their careers are
encouraged to apply.
