WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Electronic Monitoring Specialist is responsible for engaging with industry, government, and local partners in Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, to advance the application of electronic monitoring to improve fisheries transparency and enhance ecological and socio-economic resilience across large-scale fisheries in the Humboldt Current. The Electronic Monitoring Specialist reports to the Humboldt Current Iconic Place, with a dotted line into the global Large Scale Fisheries strategy team.

Working closely with TNC country programs of Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, and global teams, he/she may drive and contribute to strategy design, coordinate implementation, and facilitate adaptive management. The EM Specialist will support country programs in EM-related national policy dialogues, may represent TNC in regional fishery management fora, and engage in industry roundtables.

He/she develops and maintains strong partnerships with other NGOs, academic and scientific institutions, local and regional fisheries management agencies, and other relevant organizations to build a strong analytical and institutional foundation to design and implement EM policies and practices in the Humboldt Current Large Marine Ecosystem. He/she may contribute to innovative methods, tools, and frameworks that address the scaling of Electronic Monitoring, as well as negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and industry partners.

The position is based in Ecuador, Peru, or Chile.

The EM Specialist contributes to developing The Nature Conservancy’s global large-scale fisheries strategy and the global strategy’s alignment and execution into the Humboldt Current context. 
The Specialist helps to establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner for Electronic Monitoring (EM) in Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, and within the Latin America Region. The Specialist builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and develops partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. The Specialist will contribute to advancing the growing portfolio of projects in the Humboldt Current and the Latin America Region, focused on fisheries transparency and seafood sustainability. It will entail fundraising efforts in alignment with the country, regional and global teams.

This is a dynamic position that works across at least three Latin American country programs, the global strategy team, and the business functions of operations, finance, communications, policy, and corporate engagement.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

CI’s Americas Field Division (AFD) and the Conservation Finance Division (CFD) are seeking an experienced finance professional who can serve as an enabler/facilitator of the CFD portfolio across the Amazonia Bioeconomy. Both divisions have collaborated on a number of programs & mechanisms in the past, however, require the leadership to effectively coordinate and strategically grow this program regionally. This role has been trialed in both Asia Pacific and Africa Field Divisions, with great effect, leading to large coordinated programs of work. Given the momentum in, and focus on, the Amazonia Bioeconomy, now is the perfect opportunity to replicate this role in our Americas Field Division. 

This amazing opportunity double-hats building our Amazon Bioeconomy investing program – primarily through CI Ventures – an investment program that provides loans to small- and medium-sized enterprises that operate in the forests, oceans, and grasslands where Conservation International works​ – while also supporting the Americas Field Division with other private sector engagements to deliver an articulated investment strategy for Amazon bioeconomies.

This fellowship aims to achieve the following goals over a two-year period:

• Develop investment opportunities in the Amazonia Bioeconomy, leveraging existing efforts such as the Panamazon Network and other initiatives.
• Develop and lead CI Ventures investment activities in the Americas Field Division, with a primary focus on Amazonia Bioeconomy (including investment transactions, portfolio management, and fundraising).
• Establish a clearly articulated Conservation Finance strategy for Bioeconomy in the Americas, embedded within the AFD strategy as a key delivery tool of AFD priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The CI Ventures (Americas) & Amazonia Bioeconomy Investment Lead will strengthen the links between CI’s Conservation Finance Division and America’s regional program. The role sits within the Americas Field Division and reports to SVP Conservation Finance, with a matrix reporting line to the SVP/Chief Field Officer Americas.

This position will oversee all CI Ventures Bioeconomy activities in the region (whether delivered by regional or global staff) and coordinate with the Americas Management team. Moreover, the position will take an active leadership role in the Amazonia Bioeconomy program, looking at how conservation finance tools can be leveraged to achieve our impact ambitions in this landscape.

The position’s primary focus & responsibilities include two main areas of work:

Develop an Amazonia Bioeconomy Finance Strategy for CI, and the development of related  investment opportunities

• Collaborate with AFD countries and market networks to identify relevant opportunities to mobilise financing at scale for Amazonia Bioeconomy through CFD programs (including SME investment, innovative nature-based business model development, etc).
• Articulate an Amazonia Bioeconomy strategy to guide CFD activities in the region
• Support the development of the PanAmazon Bioeconomy Network; and (potentially leading) the Finance Task Force.
• Contribute to the design of innovative conservation finance mechanisms for the Amazon Bioeconomy in conjunction with CFD teams.
• Contribute to the management of projects in which CI collaborates with the private sector to increase investment in nature.
  

Management of CI Ventures America’s program

• Manage CIV Americas, with a focus on Amazonia Bioeconomy investments.
• Design and fundraising for an Amazonia Bioeconomy investment window for CI Ventures ($10-$20mn venture philanthropy) and explore return-seeking pathways for CIV in the Americas. Return-seeking vehicles as determined by the market opportunities. $10-$20mn fundraise for a CIV Americas window
• Manage the existing team and portfolio. (approx. 3-4 investments per Investment Officer per year).

Additional Responsibilities

The position requires a high level of interaction across internal divisions and will represent CI externally in interactions with investment and development partners engaged in conservation finance, CI grantees, and implementing partners.  

PEOPLE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

This position directly supervises the work of the junior Investment Officer position for the Americas, contributing to CFD’s investing activities and may also supervise new hires in the region or interns.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• The position will serve for a two-year period as a Fellowship. The Fellowship Program will provide opportunities to expand the breadth of their professional skills and experience through collaboration with a global network of subject matter experts across disciplines. About the Project
The project funded by PROCIENCIA aims to combine information regarding the morphology, distribution, natural & life histories, and ecological interactions of butterflies and moths in southeastern Peru with DNA sequence information (DNA barcodes) generated in the field to study important questions surrounding the diversity and ecology of this key group of Amazonian organisms. To generate DNA barcodes, a field DNA laboratory equipped with a nanopore-based sequencer and other miniaturized equipment will be installed at the Finca Las Piedras research station located in the rainforest of Madre de Dios, Peru.

Scope of Work
The main responsibilities of the Research Technician (RT) are to:

1. assist in the establishment of a field-based molecular genetic laboratory at Finca Las Piedras (FLP), 
2. provide specific technical and research support to the project in the form of routine and novel molecular genetics techniques to conduct in situ DNA sequencing, and 
3. be responsible for the smooth functioning of the molecular genetics laboratory at FLP, including keeping the lab organized, managing data collection, processing, and storage, ordering and stock-taking of materials, and ensuring health and safety in the lab.

The RT will also train and support experimental work by collaborators and students, solve technical problems as they arise, and assist in other relevant tasks as needed.
The RT will perform their work on site at FLP. Full room and board will be provided throughout the entire duration of the contract period.

Profile of the Research Technician
We are seeking a Research Technician with experience performing standard molecular genetic laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA extractions, preparation of DNA sequencing libraries, etc.) and the ability to use emerging technologies (e.g., nanopore-based sequencers) to conduct DNA sequencing, all in a field setting that presents unique challenges but also great opportunities. Therefore, you should have a strong desire to learn new techniques and an ability to adapt to new environments, be well-organized, have a proactive and self-motivated attitude toward problem solving, and have a willingness to support other team members.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
Research Duties

• Be responsible, under the general guidance of Dr. Geoffrey Gallice and other project collaborators, for performing tasks required to achieve project goals independently
• Conduct the routine preparation of tissue samples and libraries for DNA sequencing from field-collected and/or museum specimens on a nanopore-based sequencer
• Support and/or lead the development and application of new laboratory techniques using portable, miniaturized equipment to perform field-based DNA sequencing
• Maintain appropriate written and digitized records of research/laboratory protocols and results, and ensure proper data storage 
• Contribute to experimental work by project collaborators, staff, and students
• Keep up to date with new methods and contribute to the development of improved protocols and techniques, including solutions to problems as they arise
• Perform other relevant duties that may reasonably be expected by the project lead or collaborators in order to achieve the project objectives

Laboratory Management

• Ensure safety in the working environment in accordance with project-related protocols
• Assist in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous wastes including equipment, glassware, chemicals, solvents, and biological waste
• Non-scientific tasks such as ordering materials, stock-taking of reagents, and general organization of the lab

Principales responsabilidades:
1) Elaborar los documentos de gestión de los proyectos tales como plan anual, presupuestos,
informes de progreso y los presenta de forma oportuna, precisa y profesionales cumpliendo
con los requisitos de los donantes y de las organizaciones que lo requieran.
2) Garantizar el uso eficiente y efectivo de los recursos para alcanzar los resultados deseados
de los proyectos, monitoreando los planes de trabajo, presupuestos y finanzas, de acuerdo
con los procedimientos de los donantes, todo ello en estrecha coordinación con las diversas
direcciones y divisiones de Conservación Internacional
3) Supervisar la implementación y asegura el cumplimiento de todos los requisitos técnicos,
incluidos los resultados de los proyectos y los entregables, desarrollando soluciones para
mantener los entregables en marcha.
4) Liderar la construcción de relaciones interinstitucionales con los diversos actores de la región
Loreto afines al proyecto, principalmente con las Jefaturas de las áreas protegidas, tanto de
nivel regional como nacional.
5) Garantizar el establecimiento de sinergias con los diversos proyectos de Conservación
Internacional que sean símiles en temática y/o geografía.
6) Liderar la gestión del proyecto con las diversas instancias de Conservación Internacional,
tanto a nivel nacional como con los demás países que son parte del proyecto y de las
divisiones regionales y globales con los que interactúa este proyecto.
7) Coordinar con la Gerencia de comunicaciones de CI Perú las diversas acciones que permitan
socializar y visibilizar los avances del proyecto.

Blue Carbon Manager

Conservation International (CI) has been protecting nature for the benefit of all for over 30 years. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous, and more productive planet.

POSITION SUMMARY

Conservation International (CI) is a global leader in using nature-based solutions to combat climate change. Over the last decade, CI has developed a comprehensive program focused on the conservation and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems (mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses) based on their mitigation and adaptation value. CI is rapidly expanding its portfolio of Blue Carbon initiatives with the goal of incentivizing the conservation and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems at scale through carbon-related finance, sustainable production, and improved human well-being.

CI’s Blue Carbon Manager for Latin America will oversee aspects of the day-to-day running and success of the Blue Carbon Program’s body of work, including a diverse set of activities and works to ensure that the program outcomes and goals are effectively achieved. Duties include developing and implementing program and conservation strategies, project management, technical oversight, monitoring and capacity building in different countries of Latin America, including Costa Rica (at least 20% of the time), Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Perú, Brazil, and Chile.

The Program Manager works across CI to build strong relationships to advance program initiatives. They will represent CI and work to build alliances with community and external stakeholders who are critical to program success.

The Blue Carbon Manager supports the program’s financial well-being by playing a role in identifying program funding sources and developing and managing funding relationships with partners and prospects. They will work with program and HQ staff on proposals and funding initiatives.

This position does not manage staff. They will work under general direction in close collaboration with all of CI’s country programs, other teams within the Center for Natural Climate Solutions, the Center for Oceans, Moore Center for Science, Conservation Finance Division, Center for Communities and Conservation, and others across CI as well as external partners to ensure successful completion and maximum integration of blue carbon projects at CI.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop program strategies, objectives, work plans, and metrics.
Monitor, measure and provide periodic progress and metric reports.
Ensure compliance with CI policies, funding agreements, and local requirements.
Identify capacity building needs and support efforts to address capacity gaps.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Blue Carbon Manager for Latin America will be responsible for ensuring quality information management for the Latin America portion of the Blue Carbon portfolio including meta-data and monitoring data and keeping up-to-date and accurate files with key documents for all projects.
They will collaborate with the rest of the CSP team to support cross-regional thinking, sharing, and delivery at best-in-class levels.

PEOPLE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Does not have direct supervisory authority but provides feedback on team member and/or contract/partner staff and support personnel performance.
Act as a technical or subject matter expert to peers and other staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

SFS Peru has a thematic focus on the complexity of this Peruvian Amazon region with its dramatic diversity of species and habitats and rich cultural elements.
On a contract basis, deliver the Political Ecology of Development Landscapes course during the spring semester, and teach one-third of the Directed Research course. Contribute to student learning in the areas of conservation planning, natural resource use, and rural development. Course Description: Political Ecology of Developing Landscapes: Peru
In this course we focus on human interactions with and impacts on local natural systems, and vice versa. The course considers these interactions through the interdisciplinary lens of political ecology, examining the political, economic and social factors of environmental issues and changes. The course provides a conceptual framework for understanding how nature-society interactions, such as agriculture, resource extraction, tourism, and rural development shape both the natural landscape and the social and economic conditions in both rural areas and urban areas. Because resource extraction, rural development, and conservation are simultaneously social, cultural, economic, and ecological phenomena, holistic critical thinking is essential to understand these systems to enable us to propose solutions that make sense. The course provides the conceptual and practical skills and tools to critically examine and assess the human-environment nexus in the field. We also consider the theories and ethics of sustainable and unsustainable development and the need to view these issues in ways that are inclusive and just. We will use the lens of political ecology to frame lines of inquiry and define research questions.

Course Description: Directed Research
The aim of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to apply ecological, biological, and/or social-scientific methods to a field research project that addresses a local issue related to the environment. We will also investigate the ways that various methods and theories distinguish (or don’t) fact from interpretation, cause from correlation, and advocacy from objectivity. The directed research topics are derived from Center’s Research Plan as defined by the Center staff and local stakeholders. Through the Directed Research project, students will contribute to a growing body of scientific research that informs local conservation and resource management decisions. SFS program lecturers lead a small group of students in this research component of the program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide high quality, modern and experiential teaching in critical environmental issues in an interdisciplinary curriculum, and participate fully in the implementation of the program’s research plan that addresses these issues. The publication of research results is critical. Work closely with the other program lecturers to deliver an interdisciplinary program through education and research in a field setting. Each lecturer is expected to provide high quality, inquiry-based teaching and will lead students in Directed Research projects defined in the program’s research plan.

Teaching

L’organisation Quesquento Sostenible, portée par plusieurs jeunes natifs de la communauté, cherche à construire un système communautaire respectueux de l’environnement et en accord avec les traditions. L’organisation travaille à changer le fonctionnement agricole du territoire de Quesquento. De plus, elle participe dans les écoles à une éducation tournée vers les arts, les savoirs indigènes, et l’environnement.

Quesquento (Dept. Cusco, Pérou) est un village en bordure de la forêt amazonienne. Environ 25 familles Quechuas habitent le village. A travers un réseau de chacras (exploitations familiales), la communauté cultive la coca, les agrumes, le cacao, le café, le manioc. Cependant, les systèmes agroforestiers de Quesquento connaissent de profondes transformations sociales et environnementales. Depuis les années 1980, l’expansion de monocultures intensives de mandarines-oranges tend à détruire les écosystèmes et à rompre les liens unissant les Hommes à la terre. Dans ce contexte, Quesquento Sostenible veut développer sur parcelles expérimentales des pratiques agricoles durables. L’organisation veut également réaliser l’inventaire faune/flore de la commune et identifier en particulier les plantes natives, médicinales, ou endémiques. Enfin, elle s’implique dans les programmes d’éducation et transmet une vision basée sur le respect de la nature et des valeurs ancestrales.

Objectifs (suivant le profil du candidat) :
– Développer des pratiques agroécologiques sur parcelles familiales ;
– Inventaire partiel de la faune/flore de Quesquento ;

JOB DESCRIPTION

Lepidoptera Research Assistants (LRAs) work closely with ASA faculty and staff to facilitate ongoing biological research and monitoring projects at Finca Las Piedras, the ASA’s field site and base of operations in Peru’s Madre de Dios Department. LRAs are part of the public face of the ASA’s programs in Peru, and are part of a dynamic team of researchers, conservation and development professionals, and students from around the world. In addition to assigned tasks, LRAs are encouraged to develop individual projects within their areas of interest and that overlap with the ASA’s priority research areas.

This is a residency position, meaning that the successful applicant will live on site, full time. LRAs receive the equivalent of two days off per week, although given the nature of field research and ongoing projects at the field site, time off will be scheduled to ensure that a staff member is always available on site daily to perform essential tasks.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The LRA will contribute primarily to several ongoing, long term projects focused on Lepidoptera diversity and biology at the field site. Current projects include a survey of the butterfly and moth fauna of Finca Las Piedras and adjacent areas, as well as a rearing study that aims to document the host plants for several focal groups of Lepidoptera.

Example tasks & duties

-Daily care of rearing study, including recording data for immature Lepidoptera, finding & changing host plants, vouchering specimens, etc.

-Searching for new host plant records along trails and in forest plots

-General maintenance and upkeep of butterfly rearing facility & flight cage

-General maintenance and upkeep of host plant shade house

-Survey (i.e., collecting) of the Lepidoptera of the field site & adjacent areas

-Data collection & management

REQUIREMENTS
6 month commitment required (17 June – 13 December, 2019)
Minimum bachelor’s degree in natural or environmental sciences or related field
Knowledge of and experience in entomology and/or field Lepidoptera research
At least basic Spanish (preferred)
Experience working/living abroad, especially in the tropics (preferred)

TRAINING

Upon arrival at Finca Las Piedras, LRAs undergo an intensive, one-week training period. Research Assistants are given an overview of current Lepidoptera-related projects, as well as the methodologies used. LRAs will also be trained informally throughout the duration of their term at Finca Las Piedras.

COMPENSATION

This is an unpaid position. However, all room and board is provided on-site at Finca Las Piedras, 7 days per week, for the duration of the appointment. Work-related local transportation, including pickup from the Puerto Maldonado airport (PEM) or bus terminal, is covered. LRAs are responsible for their international flight to Peru (if applicable), including airfare, taxes, airport fees, flight insurance, etc., and domestic air or land travel to Puerto Maldonado.
