OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Bioenergy and Forest Policy Officer will be part of BirdLife Europe’s policy team and will help ensure that EU policies promoting bioenergy are designed and implemented in a way that ensures delivery of real and substantial GHG emissions reduction, while minimising harm to biodiversity and forest ecosystems.

The policy officer will support and coordinate BirdLife Partnership’s work on these policy areas and represent and promote BirdLife’s views to the EU Institutions, and also help design and deliver successful campaigns aiming to achieve the policy priorities of the organisation.

The policy officer should be available to start from April 2024 for a period of one year, renewable depending on funds.

MAIN DUTIES/WORK PROGRAMME RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain up to date knowledge of the relevant topics and carrying out specific in-depth research where required;
Lead the formulation of BirdLife policy and strategy with respect to the relevant topics and drafting BirdLife positions;
Network with BirdLife partners to promote activities to influence EU decision-making on sustainability standards for biomass and wider bioenergy policies and respond to inquiries as necessary from within and outside the BirdLife network.
Liaise with key players from the EU institutions and other stakeholders to gather information and influence positions;
Collaborate, coordinate and exchange information with actual and potential partners (e.g. Green 10), in particular with Transport and Environment and FERN;
Publicly present and defend the BirdLife positions, at conferences and meetings with industry and other stakeholders, in collaboration with the Agriculture and Bioenergy Policy Officer;
Provide input to general BirdLife documents and processes (e.g. memoranda to Presidencies, reports to Board, relevant web pages, etc);
Represent BirdLife Europe at relevant technical EU committees and working groups.
Help identify opportunities for funding, in collaboration with BirdLife Europe fundraisers.
Contribute to reporting to donors about relevant work areas

EDUCATION/SKILLS AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Have a relevant academic degree (additional work experience may be accepted in lieu of this);
Have at least three years of work experience with EU environmental policy, preferably but not necessarily with NGOs, including analysis and formulation of policy;
Have in-depth understanding of forest ecosystems and land-use issues, and factors and policies that influence them;
Be capable of understanding and presenting, in written and oral form, the key scientific, economic and legal dimensions of the relevant topics;
Have a sound grasp of the operation of EU institutions and EU environmental law;
Speak and write English fluently, with fluency in other EU languages being considered an asset.

Travel requirements: Occasional nights away from home, ready to travel by train (including night trains and long journeys). We have a low-flying policy hence the need for train travels of up to 9 hours.

The Key Responsibilities:

Required skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Education: A Master’s degree in Conservation, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Economics, Forestry, or a related field.
  • Experience: Significant relevant experience in project/program management within the conservation sector, including significant experience in Africa.
  • Skills: Exceptional leadership, strategic planning, and networking abilities; proficiency in fundraising and proposal development; strong communication skills; and the capacity to work effectively under pressure.
  • Knowledge: A deep understanding of forest and biodiversity conservation, especially within the African context; familiarity with conservation finance mechanisms; and experience with GIS/remote sensing preferred.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel frequently, up to eight weeks per year.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required, and working proficiency in French is highly desirable.

In the Pacific, BirdLife is working to secure Pacific Island birds and other native biodiversity by addressing key threats. Of these, invasive alien species are a leading cause of biodiversity loss also, affecting livelihoods and the Pacific way of life. In response the BirdLife Partnership is taking an integrated approach to managing invasive species, to benefit Island biodiversity, the lives and livelihoods of people and strengthening climate resilience in an equitable and socially inclusive way. Assessing the impact of this work is essential to integrating learning, successes, and the ongoing development, of the Pacific Island Restoration Programme (PIRP).

BirdLife is seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) Coordinator, based in Suva. The role reports to the Pacific Island Restoration Programme Manager.

The MEL Coordinator is responsible for leading the development and implementation of MEL across a diverse portfolio of biological and social indicators and national and regional projects. The INSPIRE project forms a significant part of this responsibility and includes developing and leading the implementation of an MEL plan with integrated biodiversity, habitat, ecosystem services, economic, cultural, climate resilience, gender equity, social inclusion and capacity-building indicators.

Summary of Key Accountabilities:

PIRP MEL Technical Support

• Strategically lead the design and implementation of MEL within PIRP projects across a range of environmental, economic and social development, capacity and climate resilience activities and indicators.

• Provide MEL technical expertise on data collection methods, information management, analysis, interpretation and partner capacity building.

Capacity Development

• Increase Partner and stakeholder capacity to technically implement and sustain MEL programmes

PIRP MEL Management

Manage MEL priorities through the development of work plans, budgets, and project reporting

Strategic Development

• Lead the development of an over-arching (regional) MEL strategy to assess and guide the ecological, socio-economic, capacity and climate adaption impacts of the PIRP.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

The successful candidate must have the following qualifications, skills, and experience:Biological sciences graduate preferably with a relevant postgraduate application and field research expertise in either tropical island ecology, invasive species, or the social development sector with environmental experience.
An advanced level of technical MEL ability with extensive experience in field data collection, analysis, and data interpretation in biodiversity conservation or other environmentally linked social development, and or climate adaptation disciplines.
Experience in leading MEL programmes across biodiversity, environmentally linked social development, GEDSI, climate adaptation and or capacity-building activities.
Knowledge of invasive species effects and management solutions for Pacific Island birds, and indigenous ecosystems, livelihoods, and climate change for subsistence rural economies.
A team person with the ability to plan and work strategically, proactively identify, and solve problems, meet deadlines, and deliver outcomes.
An understanding of Pacific Island cultures, with the ability to share knowledge, train and build MEL capacities across diverse civil society, government and technical stakeholders.
Well-developed oral and written skills with the ability to present technical information and complex concepts to a range of audiences in a clear and compelling way.
Demonstrated competence in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of applications the use of remote IT systems, and cloud-based platforms (Zoom, Teams etc.).
Willingness to travel throughout the Pacific Islands region for two to three weeks at a time and up to three months annually.Application Process:

The BirdLife Partnership is the world’s largest conservation partnership and the internationally-acclaimed authority on the status of birds, their habitats, and the issues affecting their survival. BLSA has special links with the BirdLife partners in Africa, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in the UK.
BLSA is looking for a qualified and knowledgeable Flyway & Migrants Project Manager to support BirdLife’s East Atlantic Flyway Initiative (EAFI) Coordination Group with the implementation of its conservation and species monitoring projects along the East Atlantic Flyway in Africa.

Each year many millions of shorebirds migrate from northern breeding grounds in Eurasia to wintering areas in western and southern Africa. These birds rely on a chain of high-quality coastal and inland sites to feed and rest. Many shorebird populations along this flyway are in strong decline. The BirdLife partnership undertakes to monitor birds and sites, identify conservation priorities and increase capacity for conservation along the East Atlantic Flyway in Africa. The Flyway & Migrants Project Manager will manage a project dedicated to support regional and global conservation initiatives aligned with the BirdLife International EAFI and the RSPB’s Flyway & Migrants Programme.


The Flyway & Migrants Project Manager will be required to maintain strong relationships with the BirdLife Africa Secretariat, BirdLife partners in Africa, and with the RSPB. The Project Manager will assist the BirdLife EAFI Coordination Group with the development and implementation of the EAFI strategy. With a focus on southern Africa, the Project Manager will assist with the identification of threats to the priority bird species and sites, the implementation of East Atlantic Flyway species action plans, the delineation of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and identification of area-based safeguarding mechanisms including Other Effective area-based Conservation Mechanisms (OECMs). S/he will also engage in the design and implementation of priority migratory wader and landbird species monitoring projects and fundraising for priority projects primarily in the southern part of the East Atlantic Flyway. The Flyway & Migrants Project Manager will commit to BLSA’s vision and mission (available at https://www.birdlife.org.za/who-we-are/about/), and be willing to work collaboratively with other organisations, both regional and international, to further the bird conservation cause.

Primary Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Flyway & Migrants Project Manager will include, but not be limited to:
• Implementing a BLSA EAFI Project Strategy (with short-/immediate-, medium- and long-term objectives).
• Supporting BirdLife’s EAFI Coordination Group with the implementation and revision of the BirdLife EAFI project strategy.
• Developing, reviewing, implementing and ensuring successful execution of EAFI projects, strategies and priorities.
• Supporting the RSPB in its objectives to prioritise key sites (KBAs) and countries along the East Atlantic Flyway, including species and site threat identification, site safeguarding (OECMs) and associated species research and monitoring.
• Unlocking and catalysing interest in KBAs in southern Africa, and subsequent identification, delineation, protection and monitoring of these sites.
• Assisting the EAFI Coordination Group with fundraising for the implementation of priority EAFI projects.
• Nurturing key relationships with existing donors, BirdLife Partners and other key stakeholders in the region (such as the SADC Secretariat).
• Increase the awareness of the importance of migratory birds through promotion of World Migratory Bird Day and other key events.
• Aside from the primary EAFI-related responsibilities, also work with the Regional Conservation Programme Manager towards establishing key conservation projects in southern Africa, including projects in Transfrontier Conservation Areas.
• Provide support in the development of an avitourism route within the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area.
• Provide ongoing support to the work of the Convention on Migratory Species Avian Working Group.
• Supporting the Regional Conservation Programme Manager to explore innovative ways to advance BLSA’s Regional Conservation Programme strategic objectives in the African region.
• Liaising with and maintaining key partnerships with the RSPB, the BirdLife Africa Secretariat, BirdLife partners, relevant African government departments, non-government organisations, academic institutions and other strategic role players.
• Working collaboratively across BLSA’s conservation programmes.


Inherent Requirements
Inherent requirements for the position are:
• MSc degree in natural sciences (or an applicable post-graduate qualification)
• Managerial experience in a similar environment, with proven experience in stakeholder engagement and management, financial administration, data management and all other related duties and responsibilities.
• Proven ability to liaise and collaborate with donors, funders, government officials, and other key stakeholders on a regional level.
• Knowledge of African countries’ environmental legislation and relevant international multi-lateral environmental agreements.
• Knowledge of key IUCN knowledge products about protected and conserved areas, KBAs and OECMs.
• Proven ability and experience in the design, implementation, coordination and management of complex conservation projects, cutting across science and implementation.
• A proven track record in successful fundraising, identifying donor prospects, donor cultivation and grant writing.
• Code 8 driver’s licence.

• Extensive knowledge of Africa’s birds and the main threats to these species and their habitats.
• Proven scientific and analytical skills.
• Proven knowledge about spatial prioritisation, protected areas, particularly privately protected areas, and conservation areas.

GENERAL
The successful candidate will report to BLSA’s Regional Conservation Programme Manager.
The position is ideally based at BLSA’s Head office (Isdell House, 17 Hume Road, Dunkeld West) in Johannesburg, but other locations will be considered.
The nature of the position requires the incumbent to sometimes work after-hours and over weekends and, at times, may involve extensive travel.

· To advance effective approaches to address the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation,

· To develop and promote effective approaches for large-scale, long-term governance and financing of forest conservation and restoration with a strong focus on the voluntary carbon market.

The ideal candidate will have

· Relevant professional experience, preferably in forest conservation, sustainable agriculture, rural development or a similar field;

· Very strong understanding of the drivers of tropical deforestation, the options to address these;

· Track record of senior programme coordination and financial management;

· Experience developing projects and building up programmes through strategic planning and fundraising;

· Proven ability to lead on complex projects involving multiple stakeholders across various sectors, geographies and cultural backgrounds;

· Proven ability to communicate, promote and raise resources for conservation work;

· Strong communication, negotiation and team building skills, and the ability to work with and influence key stakeholders and decision makers;

· Experience working in developing countries, and in-depth knowledge of at least one tropical region a strong advantage;

The goal of this internship is to facilitate activities related to the Flyways, Species and Forests Programmes in the Americas. Working jointly with the Conservation Officer and Forest Programme Manager assisting in several key activities related to project implementation, workshop and event logistical organization, and developing communicational materials for the three programmes.

Working closely with the Forest Programme Manager, you will be expected to balance your support tasks between the Species, Flyways and Forest programmes.
Conservation Investment Plans: Two plans for the conservation of migratory and resident birds will be developed by the end of 2022 (Chocó and Caribbean Slope). Support in the logistics and organization to implement workshops to build both documents based on the Open Standards for Conservation Methodology.
Global events such as the Global Big Day. Support in the logistics for online events.
Private sector engagement: The Forest Programme is currently building a strategy for private sector engagement with companies in Latin America and the Caribbean. Intern will perform research on relevant companies in the region to establish target private sector entities and refine our outreach strategy, will further develop an existing database of companies in the region, and will develop powerpoint presentations and letters to assist in outreach actions.
Mapping and storytelling for priority forest landscapes: Support build communicational tools (i.e. programme brochure, ArcGIS Story Map, project scorecards) for the Forest Programme’s top three priority landscapes in the Americas: the Atlantic Forest, the Gran Chaco and the High Andes. This will include collecting and collating geographic data and audio-visual materials, producing maps, working on at least one ArcGIS Story Map, and writing accompanying Story Map text.

The ideal candidate will:
Be a fourth year university student of biology, ecology, geography or another related field.
Be familiar with GIS and/or Google Earth mapping software and processes, aware of strategies and challenges in the field of biodiversity conservation, deforestation and reforestation trends.
Have the ability to coordinate a wide range of diverse tasks concurrently and priorities effectively to meet deadlines. Ability to act often with minimal supervision, but also work in a team.
Have excellent interpersonal communication skills including ability to explain often complex technical issues in an understandable way to a variety of internal and external audiences.
Have the ability to network effectively to maintain good relationships with existing collaborators, forge new collaborations, and help raise awareness of BirdLife’s work and vision.
Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish is essential.

Overall purpose of the internship

The selected intern will work in the Flyways team, providing support a range of tasks with a focus on the implementation of BirdLife GGW plan.

Responsibilities:

1. Review national GGW reports to identify FACI and their work in countries, identify and map SSGs and their activities in countries where we have BirdLife partners
2. Assist partners to identify overlap activities and GGW national Agencies
3. Assist partners to analyse and map stakeholders involved in biodiversity monitoring in their countries
4. Support BirdLife partners in the development of national plan for GGW

Competencies

Qualifications: Natural science and natural resource management,

• A minimum degree (BSc), in any appropriate discipline related to natural science, natural resource management, project management.

• Knowledge on biodiversity monitoring; field experience in conducting field surveys, data analysis and compilation of scientific reports and GIS/Remote Sensing.

Personal and social skills:
• Fluency in oral and written French and English
• Experience in facilitating meetings and/or workshops

• Experience in the non-profit or international development sector is a plus;

Internship period:

BirdLife International is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to support its scientific work on migratory birds, with a focus on mitigating the impacts of energy infrastructure on birds. The position will be based at BirdLife’s global headquarters in the David Attenborough Building, Cambridge, England.

BirdLife is the world’s largest conservation partnership and a globally recognised leader in bird conservation science. Through our network of 117 national Partners, we are committed to finding practical and sustainable solutions to environmental problems that benefit both nature and people. BirdLife works actively with governments and the energy sector to ensure that the environmental impacts of renewable energy expansion are fully considered and minimised. With our partner organisations, we have developed a range of decision-support tools and guidance materials to aid the environmentally appropriate deployment of energy infrastructure.

The successful applicant will be involved in developing avian sensitivity mapping tools, which use geographic information system (GIS) approaches to identify areas where conflict between birds and energy infrastructure is likely. They will also research and review literature on the impacts of energy development, and other issues relating to migratory birds and their flyways, for inclusion within reports and guidance material. As well as liaising closely with a diverse array of stakeholders and collaborators, by email and in person, they will also organise workshops, meetings and overseas trips. While the principal focus of the work will be to support renewable energy expansion by promoting of best-practice spatial planning and authoritative science, the applicant will also have the opportunity to contribute to BirdLife’s broader science work on migratory species and flyways.

Selection criteria:

The RSPB is one of the leading members of BirdLife International, a global partnership of more than 120 NGOs around the world working together to conserve birds and biodiversity. The BirdLife East Atlantic Flyway Initiative (EAFI) is a partner-led initiative that seeks to strengthen the collaboration for the conservation migratory birds in the flyway. Members of this initiative join efforts in identifying and addressing major threats to migratory birds, strengthening the capacity of weaker Partners along the flyway and taking bold actions based on BirdLife's local-to-global approach to conservation.

The RSPB has played a central role in developing the structure of EAFI, including putting in place a clear strategy to guide its priority work. We are committed to continue playing a leadership role along other BirdLife Partners on the EAFI Task Force as a contribution to the delivery of the BirdLife's Flyways Programme.
This position is to manage the RSPB's Flyway Programme work in certain countries, initially in Northern, Central and West Africa. This includes partner support, organisational capacity building, fundraising, conservation project management, and advocacy.

You will need to have extensive experience of the region and work experience in NGOs and organisational development. You must be able to work under minimal supervision and have excellent diplomatic, communication and negotiation skills. You will be expected to spend a significant number of nights and weekends overseas each year, the majority of which will be unaccompanied.

You will be a member of the RSPB Flyway Programme Team and participate in establishing its objectives and achieving its goals. The role may require providing support to other activities of the Global Land Department, the Global Conservation Directorate or the wider RSPB upon request. The post requires regular reporting to the RSPB, external policy makers and donors.

The ideal colleague should have experience living and working in relevant part of the Flyway; a good track record in developing funding proposals and managing conservation projects implemented through NGOs especially in Africa. Good knowledge of NGO governance and administration is essential. English will be the main working language for this post.

The ability to speak another international language spoken along the Flyway would be an advantage.

Salary starting at

£25,463 to £27,585 per annum. Applicants should expect under normal circumstances to receive an offer at the bottom of the advertised range.

Marine Programme Coordinator

• Location: Dakar, Accra or Nairobi in Africa
• Full time: 40 hours per week
• Contract: 2 year fixed term
• Salary: gross monthly 3,700 - 4,100 Euros pro rata plus competitive 12% pension benefit

Job Overview
As the Marine Programme Coordinator, you will lead the Marine Programme of the BirdLife Africa Secretariat in collaboration with the BirdLife International’s Marine Programme (BIMP). You will manage and provide strategic guidance to staff in the Africa Marine Unit and lead the development and implementation of the marine projects. You will coordinate with other BirdLife programmes to promote seabird conservation, primarily with the Invasive Alien Species and Preventing Extinctions programmes.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead and coordinate the development and implementation of the BirdLife Marine Programme
• Facilitate collaboration and harmony of Africa Marine programme with wider BirdLife International’s Marine Programme (BIMP)
• Lead, manage and motivate a team of staff for delivery of the Marine Programme in Africa
• Facilitate the coordination, delivery and growth of the marine objectives and capacity of the BirdLife Africa Partnership, including expanding capacity for marine IBA work in the region
• Develop and manage the large scale marine project, including ongoing projects in West Africa, IKI Strong High Sea, GOBI IKI project in the Western Indian Ocean and the Common Oceans project as Co-Project Executive
• Promote and communicate the objectives, goals and achievements of the BirdLife Africa Secretariat Marine Programme at a regional and international level
• Identify and promote the development of multilateral projects and agreements to advance the objectives of the BirdLife Africa Secretariats Marine Programme within Africa
• Coordinate with other BirdLife programmes to promote seabird conservation, primarily with the Invasive Alien Species and Preventing Extinctions programmes

The ideal candidate will have
• Advanced university degree in natural sciences and their practical application
• Demonstrate knowledge in marine science and conservation
• Strong communication skills and the ability to promote BirdLife to senior level stakeholders in international organisations, government, private sector and civil society
• Ability to write professional articles and give presentations to international audiences
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office package
• Strong leadership and managerial skills
• Proficient in statistical tools for scientific analysis
• Fluent in English, additional French language skills would be advantageous

Project Manager, Oil & Gas Project

BirdLife International is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced individual to manage a regional Oil & Gas Project in West Africa. As a core staff member within the BirdLife Office in Dakar, you will undertake a range of duties associated with improving environmental performance, particularly in the oil & gas industry in West Africa.

Key responsibilities will include:
• Manage project related to BirdLife International’s work on offshore oil & gas developments in West Africa.
• Support team’s engagements in West Africa, particularly on information management and bird and biodiversity safeguard.
• Deliver successful conservation outcomes for BirdLife International in its work with businesses, with a focus on offshore oil & gas developments in West Africa.

GENERAL DUTIES
• Manage and coordinate a large project working to improve environmental safeguards in the offshore oil & gas sector in West Africa.
• Engage with BirdLife Partner NGOs and corporate entities to identify sustainability opportunities, particularly related to offshore and near-shore developments in West Africa.
• Conduct due diligence and facilitate collaborative projects that address biodiversity objectives of strategic value to both parties, including initiatives that align with BirdLife's conservation programmes, and corporate commitments to biodiversity.
• Engage with BirdLife Partner NGOs and business partners to facilitate collaborative partnerships that address biodiversity objectives of strategic value to both parties, addressing both species and sites of importance to BirdLife.
• Seek opportunities to raise the profile of the oil & gas project through appropriate networks, publications and events.

Required skills, experience and qualifications:
• Postgraduate degree in natural science or in a relevant field of study.
• A proven track record of developing and managing conservation projects; experience in collaborative NGOs and business projects is a strong advantage.
• Knowledge of oil & gas industry and/or corporate sustainability would be an advantage.
• The ability to remotely manage consultant and teams in the achievement of their specific projects across specific lead areas within the programme.
• Fluency in French and English essential, ability to work in Portuguese is desirable.
• Willing and able to travel; ability to drive in all countries. An ability to travel up to 10 weeks in any one year may be required.

Salary & benefits:
Commensurate with experience and qualifications and in accordance with BirdLife International, Africa Division terms and conditions.
• Gross monthly salary of EURO 3,000 – 3,500, plus pension and other benefits
• Length/duration of this position: 3 years (renewable)
• Working hours: Full time 40 hours per week
