Animal Caretaker Mammal Department
(temporary for 32 hours from 1st November 2023 till 1st May 2024)

AAP (Animal Advocacy and Protection) is a European animal welfare organization dedicated to the welfare of exotic animals. It is our mission to end their suffering by rescuing animals in need and advocate for better laws and regulations.

Due to maternity replacement at the Mammal Department we are looking for an enthusiastic animal caretaker for a temporary contract for 6 months. If you are interested, we invite you to apply!
What are you going to do?
· You are responsible for the daily care of the animals at the Mammal department.
· In practice your work will largely include cleaning, feeding, observing, providing behavioral enrichment and assisting in the rehabilitation of the animals.
· You will monitor the general behavior and health of the animals.
· Maintenance work according to agreements and instructions.
· You will work according to AAP (safety) procedures, protocols, policy and work instructions.
· You will be training and guiding a number of volunteers and trainees.
· As a team you work independently and we expect you to be a good team player as well as being able to work independently.
· Administrative tasks are part of your work.
· You are managed by the Team Leader of the department.

What do you bring?

· Minimum MBO level 3 (education level NLQF3/ EQF3 or higher).
· Experience in working with exotic mammals in captivity is essential and experience in taking care of primates is a plus.
· Good physical condition and ability to work under stress.
· Prepared to work weekends and public holidays.
· Capable of working independently as well as being a team player.
· Taking initiative.
· Discipline to work with protocols and work ethics.
· Prepared to share knowledge and information.
· Competent in English, both oral and written.

Animal Caretaker Chimpanzee Complex (24-32 hours per week)


For two permanent positions in the Chimpanzee Complex we are looking for a motivated, passionate animal caretaker for 24 hours and 32 hours per week. If you are interested, we invite you to apply!

The Chimpanzee Complex consists of two departments:
A permanent lifetime-care-centre for ex lab chimpanzees that are infected with HIV, SIV and Hepatitis C. These chimpanzees are not sick but potentially infectious and therefore require special care;
A chimpanzee resocialization unit, temporary intensive care where newly arrived chimpanzees will learn to live in a group again. When the chimpanzees live in stable social groups they will move to other permanent facilities.



What are you going to do?
You are responsible for the daily care of our chimpanzees.
In practice your job will largely include cleaning, feeding, observing, providing behavioural enrichment and assisting in the rehabilitation of the animals.
You will be guiding and training a number of volunteers and students.
You monitor food and water intake and the general behavior and health of the animals.
Administrative tasks are part of your daily routine.
You will be personally responsible for some department wide projects.
You carry out easy maintenance work according to agreements and instructions.
The team is international and self-coordinating. You will work closely with other animal caretakers, forming part of a team of 10 people.
You will work according to standard (safety) procedures, protocols and a hands-off policy.
The Team Leader of the department will manage you.

8% Holiday allowance on the gross annual salary.
24 vacation days per year on a full time basis.

What do you bring?
Affinity with the goals of AAP.
An accredited Animal Care or animal related qualification (education level EQF3 or higher) is required.
Minimum 1 year experience in working with primates in captivity is essential.
An Article 12 or 13 Certificate (Law concerning Animal Experimentation in the Netherlands), which allows you to work with laboratory animals, is preferred.
Good physical condition and ability to work under stress.
Capable of working independently as well as being a good team player.
Discipline to work according to protocols and work ethics.
Good at taking initiative and capable of setting priorities.
Prepared to share knowledge and information.
Competent in English, both oral and written (English Common European Framework level B1).
Prepared to work 1 weekend day per week and some public holidays.
Capable of working with relevant computer software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc).
Competencies for this job: Flexibility, accuracy, collaboration and planning and organization.

The work and goals of AAP are to improve, in a professional manner, the welfare of abused or neglected primates and small to medium sized exotic mammals from all over Europe. This is achieved by providing shelter for animals from the illegal trade, circuses or private individuals. For most of the animals we find suitable homes worldwide in reserves, zoos, or in our own permanent shelter.


AAP is also actively and strategically involved in animal welfare issues by influencing European policy and decision-makers in this field and working together with professional groups at home and abroad. Furthermore, AAP is an international authoritative knowledge centre.


AAP carries out this work from their 2 locations, one located in Almere (The Netherlands) and one in Villena (Alicante, Spain). In total, we employ about 115 paid staff and more than 220 volunteers. The Spanish department is AAP Primadomus and is located at the foot of the Sierra de Salinas, one of the most important natural protected environments of Villena. AAP distinguishes itself by having an enormous passion and a professional, open culture. Our core values, accessibility, dedication and inventiveness form important guidelines of our culture. In April 2015 AAP Primadomus started rescuing big cats. The Big Cat Department consists of three buildings with extensive outside enclosures able to house up to 50 animals.


For the Big Cat Department in AAP Primadomus (Spain) we are now looking for an enthusiastic:


EXPERIENCED CARETAKER BIG CATS
(32 HOURS PER WEEK)


Your role

As an experienced caretaker you are responsible for the daily care of the lions, tigers, leopards and other wild cats housed in our rescue centre. The practical work consist mainly of cleaning, feeding, observing, providing behavioural enrichment, assisting the work of our veterinarian, animal training and assisting in the rehabilitation of the big cats. You will be part of a small team of experienced caretakers working according to standard procedures and a hands-off policy. You will guide other less experienced caretakers, trainees and (foreign) volunteers, undertake a number of administrative tasks and be flexible enough to work Saturdays or Sundays. The department’s team leader will direct you.


Requirements
Affinity with the ideals and goals of AAP
Minimum of 2 years of experience in the husbandry of with big cats
Preferably experience with big cat positive reinforcement training and social introductions
Experience with other large carnivores will be an advantage
Capable of writing and implement working instructions and procedures
Good understanding of field-specific exhibit requirements
In good physical shape and able to handle stress
Capable of working independently but also as a team player
Prepared to share knowledge and information
Competent in both oral and written English
Capable of working with relevant computer programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

Your salary based on relevant working experience is between € 1.009,- and € 1.220,- gross per month (x 14 payments) based on a 32 hour working week, with the possibility to grow each year according you development.
