Background 
The mission of the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) is to improve the survival of the remaining wild chimpanzee populations and their habitat, thereby helping to safeguard the behavioral diversity of this fascinating species. WCF's philosophy is threefold: to implement education, conservation and research projects for and by the African people. WCF Liberia works in three main areas to preserve key populations of wild chimpanzees: 1) Sapo National Park, 2) Grebo-Krahn National Park, 3) Krahn-Bassa Proposed Protected Area. Furthermore, WCF is active in the Taï-Grebo-Krahn-Sapo forest complex between Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire, representing the largest block of the Upper Guinea Forest Ecosystem, a global biodiversity hotspot. Regular monitoring of animal populations and threat assessments are a priority for improving management and targeting interventions. Ecological monitoring is one of the flagship activities for conservation and has been carried out for almost 20 years by WCF teams, and since 2015, an adapted method based on camera trapping is ongoing. 

Job description 
Support, training, and development of ecological monitoring in WCF's intervention areas in Liberia. 

Tasks and main activities 
The main activities will be carried out at the WCF office in Zwedru, southeastern Liberia. The Biomonitoring Expert will be expected to perform the following tasks: 
- Supervise WCF biomonitoring work in Liberia 
- Train WCF teams and partners in data collection and analysis
- Oversee the management of databases of each survey 
- Support report writing for the different environmental monitoring projects in collaboration with the project leaders 
- Support the search for program funding 
- Contribute to relevant scientific publications 
- Actively collaborate with local biomonitoring staff, WCF Regional biomonitoring expert, WCF Liberia Country Director, WCF Regional Director, WCF President, WCF representatives, partner institutions, and government officials. 

Qualifications/Experience 
This position is aimed at a qualified and experienced individual in the field of ecological monitoring. 

Qualifications 
- PhD/MSc in Ecology/Biodiversity/Environment/Biology or equivalent; 
- Previous professional experience in the field is essential; 
- Experience in ecological monitoring projects; data collection and report writing; 
- Ability to write reports in English 
- Excellent skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 

Profile / Desired skills 
- Strong listening and communication skills; 
- Good interpersonal skills and team spirit; 
- Ability to synthesize information and have excellent written and oral expression skills in English; 
- Strong interest in biodiversity conservation and the protection of natural resources in the context of a protected area;

Volunteer Research Assistant (RA) for biomonitoring in at the Taï Chimpanzee Project (TCP)


We are looking for a research assistant to place camera traps in the research area of TCP to collect data for a biomonitoring study to identify the biodiversity in the territories of the wild chimpanzees in the Taï National Park, Côte d’Ivoire. TCP is a long-term research project conducting research on many aspects of chimpanzee biology and conservation (www.taichimpproject.org).

Responsibilities include:The research assistant will receive an initial training of one week at the Institute for Cognitive Sciences (ISC) in Lyon, France, by members of TCP on the data collection methods and health and safety protocols. After the initial training, the research assistant will travel to Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa. The RA will be responsible to place camera traps on the pathway system, maintain the functioning of the cameras (exchanging batteries and SD cards), and store all the data safely. The RA is locally supervised by the TCP project manager and remotely by a team of experts.

Qualifications include:The research assistant should have a Master in Biology, Psychology or Anthropology with a strong interest in behavioural ecology / animal behavior. Field experience and knowledge of behavioural data collection will be of advantage.Living conditions are very basic. Internet connection is not reliably present. Living under remote and tropical conditions, living and working together with the same people whether one likes them or not, requires stress resilience, excellent social skills, and professionality in the work. Working with the chimpanzees is also physically demanding, so excellent physical and psychological conditions are conditional. The research assistant needs to speak English AND French, and needs to be able to work independently after the training in the forest.

Compensation and training:We offer the initial training of about 1 week (depending on existing knowledge and experience) by experts from the Ape Social Mind Lab at the ISC in Lyon, France. Afterwards we expect a tenure of 12 months in the Taï National Park. The research assistant receives free accommodation and a compensation of 500 € per months for living expenses, insurances, etc. After the successful tenure we reimburse the international flights from Lyon to Abidjan and back as well as visa costs (to a max of 1000 €).
This project a cooperation of the Institute for Cognitive Sciences (CNRS UMR 5229) in Lyon (F), the Helmholtz Institute for One Health in Greifswald (D) and the Evolution of Brain Connectivity Project at the Max Planck Institute EVA in Leipzig (D).

JOB DESCRIPTION
Project Coordinator & Research Expert Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS) was founded in 1995 by Bala Amarasekaran together with the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL). Everything TCS does starts with the chimps and transitions into wildlife conservation, research, climate change mitigation, advocacy, law enforcement, youth and women empowerment, community outreach, eco-tourism, environmental education and livelihood support initiatives. Previous studies have recognized the Outamba-Kilimi-Madina-Oula (OKMO) transboundary landscape in Guinea and Sierra Leone as a hotspot for endangered species such as the western chimpanzee (CR), African forest elephant (CR), hooded vulture (CR), giant ground pangolin (EN) and flora species such as Nymphoides guineensis (EN) and the endemic to Guinea Dilophotriche occidentalis (VU).The present 1 year project supports ongoing conservation initiatives (EU-Funded OKKPS PAPFor project) that were born out of the government will in both countries. WCF and TCS collaborate together on this project, with WCF as main applicant and TCS as co-applicant. In addition to support the creation process of the Penselli-Soyah-Sabouyah National Park in Guinea, this project aims to enhance habitat regeneration, conservation, and biodiversity in the Outamba-Kilimi-Madina-Oula trans boundary landscape of Guinea and Sierra Leone. In order to develop and coordinate the operational management of the forest landscape complex of OKMO, the project is recruiting a Project Coordinator in Sierra Leone, under funding obtained from the WABiLED, and the mandate given by Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS) and the Government of Sierra Leone.

OBJECTIVE
The Project Coordinator & Research Expert will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the implementation of all project activities (community work, research, education, finance and logistics) to improve the management of the Outamba-Kilimi-Kuru Hills landscape in Sierra Leone.

THE TEAM The Project Coordinator & Research Expert will work closely with TCS Outreach staff, staff on the current EU-funded OKKPS PAPFor project incluiding staff from WCF, these includeTCS: Conservation Manager, Field Manager, Assistant Field Manager, Research Manager
OKKPS SL: Community Conservation Manager, Logistics and Finance team, GIS Officer, Community Field Officers, Ecoguards, NPAA Guards
OKKPS Guinea: WCF Project Manager, WCF Special Projects Manager, WCF Financial Director, Ecoguards, OGPR Guards

MAIN ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Contribute to the development of the OKMO project’s strategies in Sierra Leone
 Coordinate a wildlife survey using systematic linear transects and camera traps to gain information and confirm the importance of the conservation value of the zone. WCF and TCS will carry two complementary, standardized, and harmonized methods of wildlife monitoring within the OKMO landscape.
 To enhance law enforcement in the landscape using the implementation of monthly surveillance and anti-trafficking patrols by community ecoguards in collaboration with the national authorities (NPAA in Sierra Leone).
 Plan the effective management of wildfires in the landscape.
 Promote forest landscape restoration through Natural Ecological Regeneration (NER) approach with a conditional adaptation of the Moyen Bafing National Park (MBNP) a model developed by WCF in Guinea.  Design and implement different outreach activities that help to create awareness for the local villages, including radio broadcasts, focus groups conducting regular awareness sessions.
 Support the local governance with the involvement of all socio-professional structures and Committees.
 Ensure the supervision of all socio-economic studies and the diagnosis of the local communities’ resilience to climate changes.
 Ensure good communication between the project and the representatives of local communities.
 Support the data collect and the monitoring and evaluation of activities related to community development and involvement in Sierra Leone.
 Support the writing of field reports following a standard template;
 Support the development of competitively strong proposals and concept notes in coordination with the development team.  Ensure the synergy between the actions of her/his program and the other programs of the OKKPS project;
 Regularly exchange with colleagues from other WCF and TCS projects and bring and share her/his expertise.
 Contribute technically to the preparation and organization of office activities: oral presentations, government and community-based meetings, consolidation of the terms of references before validation by the hierarchy.
 Support the writing and publication of the OKKPS project’s results in Sierra Leone;
 Help with the writing of field and meeting reports and make recommendations.
 Write monthly and quarterly reports of activities and submit them to the hierarchy on time.
 Write articles to be posted online on specific Media.
 Communicate with her/his immediate supervisor.
 Ensure the supervision and the quality of the terms of references, the production and monitoring of budgets, and the writing of activity reports.
 Regularly produce activity reports related to her/his program and share results with her/his immediate supervisor.
 Assist in forest landscape restoration through a Natural Ecological Regeneration (NER) approach with a conditional adaptation of the Moyen Bafing National Park (MBNP) model developed by WCF in Guinea.
 Working closely with 26 project ecoguards, subdivided into field teams, to patrol across the OKMO landscape in Sierra Leone;
 Working closely with rangers from the National Protected Area Authority, and assigning rangers to the ecoguard field teams, to jointly patrol across the landscape in Sierra Leone.  Providing regular training for all ecoguards and rangers patrolling in the landscape on the use of SMART, GPS devices, camera traps, recces, and other survey design methods.
 Planning different research surveys in collaboration with the WCF team involving the collection of human and wildlife data within the landscape;
 Providing law enforcement training to all ecoguards and rangers in collaboration with the National Protection Area Authority (NPAA) to ensure the conservation of the landscape.  Planning joint field missions with WCF to undertake joint patrols in both Guinea and Sierra Leone with all ecoguards and rangers assigned to the project.
 Inputting research and biomonitoring data into suitable software to facilitate analysis;  Analyzing research and biomonitoring data and building the capacity of other team members to do the same.
 Working closely with the GIS officer to extract and report on data-driven conclusions.  Inspecting sites to ascertain the appropriateness of existing conditions.
 Conferring with project beneficiaries and support staff to evaluate uptake, pitfalls, and areas necessitating expansion.
 Working closely with the Logistics Officer to ensure procurement activities and logistics procedures for purchasing, inventory, and equipment management are implemented and adhered to.
 Revising and creating novel implementations that cover shortfalls in extant initiatives.

EXPERIENCES AND SKILLS
Qualification–Masters / Ph.D in science or a university degree in Rural Development / Sociology / Agronomy / Conservation or any other similar field;
At least 3 years of professional experience in rural sociology, rural development, participative mapping, surveys, structuring of local communities;
At least 2 years of experience in the management of natural resources involving local communities within a national or international NGO;
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet and medias (social network, websites, site web, etc.).PROFILE / DESIRED SKILLS
Have strong listening and communication skills;
Have good human relation skills and team spirit;
Have excellent skills for synthesis, and for written and oral expression; Be able to guarantee the confidentiality and discretion and be able to represent the NGO at the local level;

RENUMERATION

The Research Assistant will need to contribute to creating a comprehensive database on chimpanzee call acoustics and by extracting calls from recordings and handling acoustic data. The research would ideally take place in Portsmouth, although there are possibilities for remote working. Previous research experience in psychology/biology or a related field will be essential and an understanding of methodological issues in research will also be critical. Familiarity with acoustics and animal behaviour is not required, although helpful. Training will be provided. The Chimpanzee Complex consists of two departments:
A permanent lifetime-care-centre for ex lab chimpanzees that are infected with HIV, SIV and Hepatitis C. These chimpanzees are not sick but potentially infectious and therefore require special care;
A chimpanzee resocialization unit, temporary intensive care where newly arrived chimpanzees will learn to live in a group again. When the chimpanzees live in stable social groups they will move to other permanent facilities.



What are you going to do?
You are responsible for the daily care of our chimpanzees.
In practice your job will largely include cleaning, feeding, observing, providing behavioural enrichment and assisting in the rehabilitation of the animals.
You will be guiding and training a number of volunteers and students.
You monitor food and water intake and the general behavior and health of the animals.
Administrative tasks are part of your daily routine.
You will be personally responsible for some department wide projects.
You carry out easy maintenance work according to agreements and instructions.
The team is international and self-coordinating. You will work closely with other animal caretakers, forming part of a team of 10 people.
You will work according to standard (safety) procedures, protocols and a hands-off policy.
The Team Leader of the department will manage you.

Coordinador de proyectos de conservación en África

The Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) is an international NGO established in several countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea and Liberia. WCF has been in operation since 2000 for the conservation of chimpanzees and other biodiversity in West Africa. One of WCF’s main target areas is the Taï-Grebo-Krahn-Sapo Forest Complex, the largest remaining relatively intact forest block that spans across the Ivorian and Liberian border, encompassing various protected areas (Taï National Park and Cavally Classified Forest in Côte d’Ivoire; and Sapo National Park and the newly established Grebo-Krahn National Park in Liberia) and identified conservation landscape corridors.

WCF has recently been awarded a grant from TetraTech for USAID’s West African Biodiversity and Climate Change (WA BiCC) program to “Strengthen Multi-Stakeholder Management of the Taï-Grebo-Krahn-Sapo Transboundary Forest Landscape between Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire”. The 28-month program feeds into WCF’s long-term mission of enhancing the survival of the remaining wild chimpanzee populations and their habitat, and covers conservation programs that include biomonitoring, law enforcement, environmental education, research, land-use planning, alternative livelihood schemes, ecotourism and capacity building. Emphasis is placed on using an evidence-based approach to the program and supporting transboundary collaboration between stakeholders in Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia.

Job Description:

We are seeking a full-time Transboundary Project Coordinator to ensure the implementation of the program and to deliver on project objectives, with support from the Liberia Country Director based in Monrovia and the West African Representation Director based in Abidjan. The Transboundary Project Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination between the two countries and their respective field offices in Zwedru (southeast Liberia) and Taï (southwest Côte d’Ivoire), ensuring that project activities are implemented and reported on in a timely manner. Project activities that the Project Manager will be responsible to ensure implementation of include: Development and supervision of socio-economic and demographic surveys, livelihood support for local communities, biomonitoring programs across 5 sites of intervention; training of local partners in biomonitoring, law enforcement, SMART, GIS, remote sensing, awareness raising actions, protected area management, development of national strategies for biomonitoring and law enforcement, with emphasis on SMART and digital data collection. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the Monitoring and Evaluation of the project and ensuring deliverables are reached. The Transboundary Project Coordinator will work along side a team of 50 full-time staff in both countries and an additional 27 part-time staff and will be based in Monrovia, with regular travel to Abidjan and the field offices and sites in both countries.

Salary and benefits: Salary is dependent on experience. A stipend for lodging is provided, as well as an annual return airfare. Vaccinations and insurance are not covered.

Main Responsibilities:
Lead the implementation of planned project activities, ensuring they are in accordance with with the WA BiCC program objectives and project agreement
Consult, communicate and coordinate regularly with TETRATECH/WA BiCC and projects partners
Ensure project activities are implemented and completed in a timely manner
Develop and coordinate national and transboundary activities with the WCF team, partners and stakeholders, in conjunction with the Liberia Country Director and West African Representation Director
Manage, support and coordinate allocated project staff
Ensure financial management of project funds in accordance with WCF and WA BiCC procedures
Prepare project reports for donors and government partners in a timely manner in accordance with WCF and donor procedures
Prepare annual work plans and budget forecasts and support the field team to provide similar monthly plans, to ensure the smooth running of field activities
Represent the WCF in meetings/workshops, both nationally and internationally, that relate to the project

Qualifications / Experience:

Required:
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in conservation project management or a related field (preferably in an NGO)
Minimum Masters level degree in conservation or a related field
Proven project management skills and/or monitoring and evaluation skills
Proven financial management skills (forecasts; budgets; financial control)
Proven team management and leadership skills
Excellent computer skills with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office
Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (oral and written)
Fluent in French (oral)
Driver’s License

Preferred:
Relevant experience in West Africa
Experience with USAID funded projects and procedures
Understanding of current conservation issues in in West Africa
Computer skills including GIS, DISTANCE, Access, etc.
Conservation field experience, preferably in a tropical forest habitat
Experience in training and capacity building
Flexibility in your work schedule
Experience in 4x4 driving

PhD in sociality and social cognition in chimpanzees (Germany/Côte d'Ivoire)

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology unites scientists with various backgrounds (natural sciences and humanities) whose aim is to investigate the history of humankind from an interdisciplinary perspective with the help of comparative analyses of genes, cultures, cognitive abilities, languages and social systems of past and present human populations as well as those of primates closely related to human beings.

TOPIC: SOCIALITY AND SOCIAL COGNITION IN CHIMPANZEES IN THE TAÏ NATIONAL PARK, CÔTE D’IVOIRE

We are offering a PhD position working on questions of sociality, incl. hormones, and social cognition in wild chimpanzees. The position will start January 1, 2016, and will require several prolonged field seasons (9 months each) at the Taï Chimpanzee Project, Cote d’Ivoire.

Our general interest is to understand the effects of sociality and social cognition on fitness in chimpanzees. We are looking at proximate mechanisms and at ultimate effects. We will accept proposals on any question in the realm of sociality and social cognition.

Qualification and requirements

MSc (or comparable degree) in Biology, Evolutionary Anthropology or Evolutionary Psychology. Good knowledge in evolutionary biology, animal behavior and ecology are crucial for a successful application. Previous observations and detailed behavioral data collection on wild mammals are of advantage. The PhD candidate will need to work independently in a remote and physically demanding tropical forest habitat. Good social skills are important to work and live amongst a group of international colleagues with different cultural backgrounds.
The successful candidate is fluent in French and English and has some management experience. Previous experience with field work will be beneficial to the application.

Salary / funding
Supported by a MPI EVA PhD contract. In addition the successful candidate will write a research proposal to apply for grant money.

Start and term of appointment

Starting January 2016, or as soon as possible afterwards, the successful applicant will observe chimpanzees for several field seasons in Tai. Tenure of the position is three years (+ one year extension).
