1. The BIOPOLIS Association is launching an international call for PhD graduates to carry out research activities, under an uncertain term employment contract, in accordance with the Labour Code, with an expected duration of 12 months. This notice is intended to fill one (1) post of Junior Researcher (Reference BIOPOLIS 2024-44), to carry out scientific research activities within the scope of the BIODIVERSA+ INSPIRE project - ‘ INtegrated Spatial PlannIng across REalms for biodiversity conservation and human development in a context of change’, funded by Biodiversa+, the European Biodiversity Partnership under the joint call BiodivProtect 2021-2022, and co-financed by National Funds through FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (DivProtect/0008/2021, doi 10. 54499/DivProtect/0008/2021) to contribute to the spatial planning of the conservation of the Tagus river basin and adjacent coastal area, taking into account multiple objectives and dynamic conditions.

2. Applicable Legislation

Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of August 29th, amended by Law 57/2017 and Regulatory Decree No. 11- A / 2017 which approved the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (RJEC); Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law 7/2009 of February 12, in its actual form.

3. Pursuant to article 13 of RJEC, the tender selection panel is formed by: Silvia Carvalho (Researcher at BIOPOLIS/CIBIO-InBIO; President of the Jury), Susanne Tanner (Researcher at MARE; vowel), and Virgilio Hermoso (Investigador da Estación Biológica de Doñana, vowel).

4. The workplace shall be at Associação BIOPOLIS/CIBIO – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Rua Padre Armando Quintas nº7 | 4485-661 Vairão, PORTUGAL, and may involve travel in Portugal and abroad in service or representation of contract entity. Semi-remote work possibilities will be considered.

5. Monthly remuneration to be paid is that set by subheading a) nr.1 article 15 of RJEC and article nr 2 of the Regulatory Decree nr. 11-A/2017, corresponding to level 33 of the Tabela Remuneratória Única, approved by Order no. 1553-C/2008 of December 31st, i.e. 2.294,95 Euros.

6. Application can be submitted by any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) holding a doctorate degree in Biology, or other related fields, and a scientific and professional background that aligns with the specific activities described below. In case the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 October, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of work contract.

7. The tender admission general requirements are those defined in the previous point 6, and additional specific requirements are:

I. Previous experience in R programming;

II. Previous experience in the analysis of biogeographic data in a spatial context, using geographic information systems (GIS) or the R programming language, with a particular focus on species distribution modelling;

III. Familiarity with spatial conservation planning tools, such as Maxent or Zonation;

IV. Solid publication record in the fields of biogeography and/or ecological modelling

V. Proficiency in written and spoken English.

8. Pursuant to article 5 of RJEC, the selection is to be made based on the evaluation of the scientific and curricular career of the candidate.

9. Scientific and curricular career evaluation focuses on relevance, quality and up-to-datedness:

I. of scientific, technological, cultural or artistic production in the last five years, considered most relevant by the candidate;

II. of research activities, fundamental or applied science, developed in the last five years, considered of higher impact by the candidate;

III. of knowledge extension and dissemination activities developed in the last five years specifically related to the promotion of culture and scientific practices, as deemed most relevant by the candidate.

IV. of activities of science management, technology and innovation programs, as well as experience in observing and monitoring the scientific and technological system or higher education, in Portugal or abroad.

10. The five-year period mentioned above can be extended by the panel, if requested by the candidate, whenever the suspension of scientific activities is reasoned by socially protected grounds like paternity leave, long-term serious illness, and other legal situations of unavailability to work.

11. Evaluation criteria are the following:

The evaluation of the CV of the candidates, in particular the scientific merit and research experience will take into consideration the elements presented for the last five years of activity falling within the scope of the specific areas of the tender and will be performed according to the following criteria:

11.1 Integrated assessment of the curriculum trajectory of the candidate, based on an overview of their scientific merits, namely:

I. overall scientific coherence of the CV – 10%

II. diversity and quality of scientific indicators, including relevant published peer-reviewed articles in the specific areas of the announcement (see point 1) - 10%

11.2 Relevant experience, proved in CV, in:

I. Programming in R (20%)

II. Analysis of biogeographical data using geographic information system tools and species distribution modelling (GIS) (30%);

III. Conservation planning tools (10%)

IV. Writing scientific publications (20%).

12. In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. This will be aimed at obtaining clarifications about the curricular elements and additional information, as well as to evaluate the attitude profile and motivation of the candidate. The final score of each jury member is obtained by the following assessment: 90% scientific and curricular career evaluation and 10% interview.

13. The candidates’ final classification system shall be given based on a scale 0 to 100.

14. The panel shall deliberate by means of roll-call vote justified under adopted and disclosed selection criteria, with no abstentions allowed.

15. Minutes of panel meetings shall be executed and include a summary of all occurrences of said meeting, as well as of all votes casted by the members and respective reasoning.After selection criteria application, the panel shall prepare a sorted list of approved candidates and respective classification.

16. The panel’s final decision shall be validated by the leader of the institution, who is also in charge of deciding about the hiring.

The tasks

• Applying, within the framework of an established protocol, the techniques for the preparation, characterisation and sequencing of nucleic acids; 
• Performing routine molecular biology experiments (nucleic acid extractions, high molecular weight DNA extractions, PCR, multiplex PCR, quality control of nucleic acids, construction of DNA/RNA libraries for high-throughput sequencing);

The team 

The Balearic Biodiversity Centre (www.centrebaleardebiodiversitat.uib.es), at the University of the Balearic Islands gathers a team of researchers, technical staff, facilities and equipment whose motivation is the generation of knowledge about the rich natural environment of the Balearic archipelago and its biodiversity, the conservation of reference natural history collections and associated data. The CBB consists of four units: the Genomics Unit, the Natural History Collections Unit, the Data Management Unit and the Training and Outreach Unit. The person recruited will join the Genomics Unit but is expected to contribute to the establishment and development of the CBB as a reference in biodiversity studies, offering multidisciplinary services to the scientific community at regional and national level and being a strong partner in international initiatives.

Qualification requirements and competences

• Degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry or similar
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of techniques frequently used in the Centre (DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, quality control of nucleic acids, construction of DNA/RNA libraries).

• Ability to adapt an experimental protocol or equipment procedure manual according to the needs of the moment.

Job Announcement

A new research project on

“Restoration of tropical rainforest in degraded landscapes”

invites applications for one postdoctoral position in Conservation Biology beginning in mid 2023 for a period of 3 years.

The project (acronym: UpScaleR) is funded by a grant from the Foundation UniScientia to the Technical University of Darmstadt (TUDa), Germany. The fixed-term positions will be implemented at the Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA) in Quito in close collaboration with TUDa and Fundación Jocotoco.

UpScaleR aims at understanding the dynamics of natural forest recovery from agriculture and degraded land, comparisons with active tree plantations and the contribution of frugivorous vertebrates to tree dispersal. The research will be conducted in and around the Buenaventura Forest Reserve in southwestern Ecuador run by Fundación Jocotoco. The reserve successfully restores and protects a unique tropical forest in the western foothills of the Andes and is home to a particularly diverse flora and fauna including many endemic species. We will study the seed dispersal of tree communities by birds and/or mammals (plant-frugivore networks) in formerly deforested areas, focusing on seedlings, fruit traits and fruit-dispersing animals (especially birds, potentially bats and other mammals). We aim to compare tree and forest recovery across sites with different degrees of forest cover in the surrounding, and aim to unravel the importance of dispersal limitation and the forest matrix for recovery success. This involves extensive monitoring and identification of trees, seedlings, and birds or possibly bats or other mammals. A good level of taxonomic knowledge in plants and/or vertebrates is thus highly desirable for a successful application.

The UpScaleR project aims to inform conservation, forest restoration and management and will be conducted closely together with Fundación Jocotoco. Together, we offer an excellent, international, research environment and research training both at the UDLA, TUDa, as well as in the Research Unit “Reassembly” in North-West Ecuador to which this project is tightly linked. (UpScaleR is an extension – “upscaling” – of Reassembly in a forest dominated landscape context to Buenaventura with a more degraded forest landscape). This project framework thus involves lively collaboration and networking with many scientists, colleagues and PhD candidates from Ecuador and Germany. Both scientists will also visit the two labs in UDLA (their main host institution) and Darmstadt for some time. Employment as a researcher will be at UDLA at their conditions and competitive salaries.

The postdoctoral position is aimed at experienced scientists that have completed a PhD (in botany, zoology or ecology or related disciplines). Applications from any country are welcome, but candidates from Ecuador or other Latin American countries have a large advantage. We expect the postdoc to work together with, and co-advise, a PhD candidate (who has already been selected in a previous call). Both UpScaleR scientists (the postdoc and PhD candidate) will spend many months during the first two years in the remote study area to conduct field work, experiments and plot selection in collaboration with the local staff of Jocotoco. Field work experience in remote areas such as tropical forests and good physical conditions are essential in addition to scientific qualifications, good writing skills in English and communication skills in Spanish. German language proficiency is not required.

2 Two PhD Funded Positions in Conservation Biology/Restoration Ecology at the University of Bern, Switzerland


The Division of Conservation Biology at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution, University of Bern, Switzerland, offers 2 PhD positions within our research programme: Restoring grassland biodiversity: from degraded, species-poor to integral stable-state ecosystems

The research programme was launched in 2018 with the objective to develop and evaluate the effects of current and novel grassland restoration methods for converting existing species-poor grasslands into biodiversity-rich, stable-state ecosystems. It comprises two modules: 1) a lowland module that experimentally tests pro-active restoration methods for hay meadows; and 2) a mountain module where passive restoration methods are investigated for enhancing the biodiversity of intensified grasslands.

The successful PhD candidates will work either in the lowland or in the mountain module. Both experiments include a proper control, are carried out at the field-scale, i.e. with a given restoration treatment being randomly attributed to a whole field, and benefit from baseline data. Candidates will collect field data in order to monitor biotic and abiotic environmental responses to the experimental manipulations using a series of metrics for biodiversity (plant and invertebrate species richness, diversity indices, functional traits, community analyses, etc.), as well as hay productivity and quality.

This multiple taxonomic group approach is necessary to embrace the whole ecosystem complexity, unveil underlying mechanisms and recognise possible antagonistic responses. Ultimately, the goal is to deliver evidence-based optimal grassland restoration policy guidelines.

Candidate must hold a MSc degree, show a strong interest in agro-ecology and conservation, and master modern analytical techniques. Knowledge of grassland indicator taxa would be advantageous though not prerequisite. English literacy is important, while knowledge of German and French would represent a real asset, notably for dealing with farmers and authorities. Start: 1 May 2023 (or as soon as possible). Duration: 3-4 years. Salary according to SNSF rules. The PhD student will have to contribute to teaching and will be in charge of some minor administrative duties.

Your profile:
A relevant university education with a completed doctoral/PhD degree and a strong potential in research. Experience with conducting population genomics analyses is preferred but not required. Exceptional organizational skills and strong ability to accomplish tasks independently. Teaching or supervision experience required. Excellent spoken and written English is required.

With the Wyss Academy for Nature, we are starting an ambitious freshwater conservation biology project with a focus on fish. Working initially at the scale of the largest Swiss catchment, the Aare, home to more than 60 different species of fish, we want to go all the way from field ecology, niche modelling and projections of range shifts under climate change to identifying priority areas for biodiversity conservation, and designing measures to mitigate predicted and recover past losses. As implementation partner, the Swiss Fisheries Competence Center will develop applications of such measures initially in a test region. The project is supported by the Wyss Academy for Nature at the University of Bern in partnership with the Canton of Bern and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN/Bafu). If successful, the project may continue for up to eight years, with the goals of upscaling projections to other catchments of Switzerland and a fully fledged mitigation program.

The Aare catchment contains several of the large perialpine lakes, each of which has endemic species of coldwater fish, several of which have already gone extinct. It also has many mountain rivers with environmental gradients stretching from the arctic-alpine to the temperate climate zone, including one of the most pristine braided rivers left on the North face of the Alps. We have an extensive data set on distribution records for most species of fish in Switzerland and many environmental variables. Our goal is to complement this data with additional dense sampling of fish and environmental variables across the entire Aare catchment. Our recent work has uncovered old cryptic species as well as postglacial ecological species within the broad category of taxonomic “species” currently in use in management. Whenever possible we will do niche modelling and change projections at the level of these evolutionary significant units (ESUs). We will work with and add to our large collection of voucher specimens and tissue samples covering many populations of most Swiss fish species. We will develop data rich niche models for all species/ESUs of fish and also for some key aquatic invertebrates. We will combine the niche models with locally resolved climate and land-use change projections to predict habitat gains and losses and identify hotspots of expected biodiversity loss. We will use the results to develop mitigation strategies, components of which will be explored initially in a test region, in close collaboration with the Swiss Fisheries Competence Centre, the Wyss Academy for Nature, the Canton Bern office for the environment (LANAT) and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

We are hiring a technician to support a team of postdoctoral scientists. You are in charge of the sampling. This includes electrofishing and snorkelling in streams, netfishing, diving and ROV operations in lakes, processing of samples and genetic lab work (barcoding and RAD sequencing). You are also in charge of obtaining sampling permits. Employment as technician/senior technician depending on experience.
Qualifications: MSc or PhD in fish biology with relevant field experience and strong technical skills. Social skills and proficiency in German/Swiss-German are required for interactions with fisheries administrations and stakeholders.

We are hiring 3 Postdocs with 3 different profiles:

1. Fish ecologist, evolutionary or conservation biologist to co-lead the field work with emphasis on sampling, identification, integrative taxonomy, and ecology of fish. Employment at Postdoc/senior Postdoc level depending on experience. Qualifications: PhD in ecology/taxonomy/systematics with excellent knowledge of fish, fieldwork, population genetics, phylogenetics, good understanding of integrative taxonomy and excellent analytical skills. Social skills are required for interactions with stakeholders. Some knowledge of German/Swiss-German is an asset but not absolutely necessary.
2. Aquatic ecologist, evolutionary or conservation biologist to co-lead the field work with emphasis on ecological and environmental data collection and invertebrates. Employment at Postdoc/senior Postdoc level depending on experience. Qualifications: PhD in aquatic ecology/taxonomy/systematics with excellent knowledge of aquatic systems beyond fish and excellent analytical skills. Social skills are required for interactions with stakeholders. Some knowledge of German/Swiss-German is an asset but not absolutely necessary.
3. Ecologist or evolutionary biologist with strong modelling skills to lead the niche modelling and projection of population dynamics and range shifts under climate and land-use change. Employment at Postdoc/senior Postdoc level depending on experience. Qualifications: PhD in ecology, conservation or evolutionary biology with strong background in ecological niche modelling and/or projections of biodiversity under climate change scenarios.

Your responsibilities include field work and data collection (position 1 and 2), data analysis, writing papers and publishing in leading journals in the field (all 3 positions). Provided appropriate skills, one senior Postdoc is expected to take on the responsibilities of overall project management. The group works on the ecology, evolution and conservation of freshwater fish with a strong focus on the fish of the Alpine region and the African Great Lakes. The Postdocs and the Technician in this project will function as a project team within a much larger team of ecologists, evolutionary biologists and conservationists. The group’s working language is English and fluency in speaking and writing is required. Knowledge of German is also required for the field technician. The Estación Biológica de Doñana is an institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). EBD has close to 200 employees, including 44 researchers, postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, field and lab technicians, and administrative personnel. EBD has several unique aspects:

PhD in Animal Conservation Biology, Uppsala University (Sweden)

The fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) causes the disease Chytridiomycosis and is believed to be one of the major causes for recent global declines of amphibians. Bd was first found in Sweden in 2011. This studentship is aimed at elucidating the relationship between Bd infection and fitness in natural populations of Swedish amphibians. The objective is to determine the extent of Bd infection in Swedish amphibans and whether resistance differs among species and populations.
We seek a bright and highly motivated student who ideally holds an M.Sc. or equivalent in a relevant topic (e.g. population-, evolutionary- or conservation genetics/ecology). Experience of working with conservation genetic techniques such as MHC-genetics, sequencing, and genotyping would be advantageous, but full training will be provided. The ideal candidate will also be able to work both independently and as part of a team. A high standard of spoken and written English is required.
The student will be based at the Department of Ecology and Genetics (Animal Ecology) at the Evolutionary Biology Centre (EBC) at Uppsala University (http://www.ebc.uu.se). PhD position in quantitative ecology is available at the Department of Biology, NTNU

The fellowship is for up to four years including 25 % teaching duties. The fellowship is linked to the Centre for Conservation Biology, NTNU (http://www.bio.ntnu.no/pbc/).

The purpose of the project is to study temporal and spatial variation in
population dynamics using large data sets covering a wide range of taxa. Our
aim will be to obtain a better understanding of how changes in the
environment, e.g. due to climate change, will affect long-term viability of
populations and species.

The student will through the PhD acquire expertise in quantitative ecology,
applications of population models and use of advanced statistical methods.
The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary research group.
