We invite applications from teams of early-career leaders worldwide who are addressing global conservation priorities at a local level ⏰ Applications must be submitted online by 18 October, 2024.

The selected award-winning teams will receive a project grant of up to US$15,000 - PLUS training, mentorship and continuous support through our extensive alumni network.

Key eligibility requirements:

🤝 Teams must include at least three people
🌱 All team members must be early-career (i.e. have no more than five years' work experience in conservation)
👉 Team members must be nationals of the country in which the project will take place (though one non-national can be included, if clearly justified)
🌍 Projects must be based in an eligible country (see the full list of eligible and ineligible countries in the detailed guidelines on our website)
🐅 Projects must focus on the conservation of 'at-risk' species such as those designated as DD, VU, EN or CR by the IUCN Red List
📅 The project duration must be between 3-12 months

La Fundación Biodiversidad del Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico ha convocado nuevas becas para formarse en sus diferentes áreas.



Un año más, publicamos una beca para formarse participando en el Proyecto Red Emprendeverde (REV) del Programa Empleaverde y en otras actuaciones dirigidas a apoyar a personas emprendedoras del Área de Economía y Empleo Verde, cofinanciadas por el Fondo Social Europeo (FSE).



La REV es una herramienta estratégica del Programa Empleaverde+ que desde 2011 impulsa la creación y consolidación de empresas verdes y el reverdecimiento de otras empresas, sirviendo de puente entre los emprendimientos y otros actores públicos y privados del ecosistema.



Actualmente es una de las mayores redes de apoyo al emprendimiento verde con una comunidad, de más de 11.000 personas y otras 106.000 que la siguen en RRRS, que comparten valores comunes y el objetivo de impulsar negocios más sostenibles.



La REV en 2024, con la cofinanciación del Fondo Social Europeo +, comienza una nueva etapa donde evoluciona para contribuir con nuevas actividades a la revolución de las capacidades que conlleva la transición ecológica justa, impulsando de una forma más eficaz el emprendimiento verde con impacto positivo. Además, con la cofinanciación del Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional va a impulsar nuevas actuaciones especializadas para generar espacios de encuentro para mejorar la transferencia e intercambio de conocimiento y experiencias entre profesionales de administraciones públicas, academia, ONG y sector privado con el ecosistema emprendedor que sirvan para identificar y proponer retos y soluciones emprendedoras basadas en problemas y necesidades reales, de infraestructura verde, restauración ecológica y bioeconomía.

The Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) is pleased to announce the 2023 Graduate Research Excellence Grant (GREG) R. C. Lewontin Award competition. These awards offer up to $2,500 USD to assist students in the early stages of their PhD programs. These grants are part of the Graduate Research Excellence Grants award program.
Eligibility

Only PhD students in their first two years of their programs are eligible. Eligibility can be confirmed by the advisor or graduate director stating that the student is an early-stage doctoral student. Previous applicants to the GREG Rosemary Grant Advanced Award are no longer early in their programs, thus are ineligible to apply to the GREG R. C. Lewontin Early Award.

Student applicants must be members of SSE, and are advised to join SSE, if not already members, as soon as possible to facilitate their applications. To join, go to: https://payments.evolutionsociety.org/joinsse/.
SSE offers reduced or free membership fees for researchers in 152 countries and territories through the Global Membership Assistance Program.
Students who identify as racial or ethnic minorities, either in their country of origin or their country of residence, are eligible for free 2-year memberships through the SSE Membership Award.
Advisors who are SSE members can purchase 1-year Gift Memberships for their students for $10 USD.

Previous awardees of either GREG award may not re-apply. Previous applicants to the GREG R. C. Lewontin Award who were not selected for funding are welcome to re-apply if they still meet the other eligibility requirements.

This award is not limited to students in the United States.

Students do not have to be enrolled in an evolutionary biology program to apply, but proposals must address a topic in evolutionary biology.

Funding

Funding is not limited to any particular aspect of research (but see FAQs below). Funds can be used to collect preliminary data (to pursue additional sources of support) or to enhance the scope of their research beyond current funding limits (e.g. by visiting additional field sites, or working at other labs). Recipients are not required to use the awarded funds by a certain time, and may deviate from any timeline described in their proposal.

Students should confirm that the proposed work is outside the scope of other funding held by either the student or their advisor.

Awards will range from $1,500 - $2,500 USD.

Indirect costs may not be charged to this award.


How to apply

Your research proposal, budget, and a letter from your advisor must be included in your application as a single file in .pdf format with one-inch margins (= 2.5 cm) and 12 point font.

The file must include: Research proposal, describing objectives, methods, significance, and schedule, (max. two single-spaced pages including literature cited and any figures and tables);
Budget (1 page; no justification necessary, just a clear budget);
Confirmation of eligibility as a signed letter from the thesis advisor or graduate director. This should include confirmation that the applicant is in the first two years of their Ph.D. program.

Note: This letter is *not* a letter of recommendation; only include the information requested.

Research Proposal

In your research proposal, focus on convincing the awards committee of the importance of the question, how the funds will allow you to reach certain objectives, and how these objectives fit into your overall thesis schedule, while also demonstrating that the research is sufficiently independent that funds from your mentor cannot be applied.

Please note that these proposals are not meant to be prescriptive, and are not indicative of what proposals will be funded in the 2023 R. C. Lewontin award cycle. They are only meant to be examples of the structure and language used in previously successful proposals. These proposals are posted with permission of the authors. NOTE that these proposals only include the proposal and budget. Your proposal should also include the confirmation of eligibility as a signed letter from your thesis advisor or graduate director.

Structure and length guidelines:

Background (250-500 words)
- Start with the big picture: What is the context of your proposed research? What is already known about this area of study?
- Summarize previous research in this field: What findings will your work build upon? What are the gaps in our knowledge that your research will try to answer?

Research Objective (100-150 words)
- State your specific hypothesis: What is your research question? What will you learn from this study? How will it address a gap in our knowledge of this field?

Methods (250-500 words)
- Data collection: What data will you collect, and how?
- Data analysis: How will you analyze your data?
- Connection to research objective: How will collecting these data allow you to answer your research question?

Significance/Impact (150-300 words)
- How does this research fit into your overall dissertation?
- What effect will these findings have on the field?
- How will this grant help you achieve your research goals?

References
- References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the proposal.

Other notes:
- Use first-person singular pronouns (I, me, my, not we, us, our) to describe what you will do.
- Define any jargon terms that people outside of your specific area of research may not know.
- If possible, have someone else proofread your proposal to check for grammar and spelling errors.

Ocean Storytelling Writing Grant

This writing category builds on the legacy of our previous photography grants and is dedicated to supporting a diverse generation of emerging conservation storytellers. While we don’t expect all applicants to be writers with a marine focus, we are specifically looking for writers who can tell conservation stories about the ocean. Whether they describe marine animals themselves, or fisheries, or the communities whose lives are intertwined with the life of the sea, a writer’s words can inform, transport, enchant, endear and persuade.

Successful grantees will receive a paid assignment to cover a conservation story under the direct mentorship of the Storytelling Grant team. We particularly wish to support early career and emerging storytellers and aim to encourage new voices with fresh perspectives and writing approaches, so although applicants must be already committed to writing, they should have no more than five years of professional experience in any writing-related discipline. We encourage women and applicants from underrepresented communities to apply for this opportunity. Applications will be accepted both directly via open call and through nomination.

APPLICATION PROCESS 

The Ocean Storytelling Writing Grant application process consists of a one-stage online application. Applicants are required to answer a few questions and submit a short feature-style story (1000 words) and a completed set of short answers (100–200 words each) in the application form.
Only one application will be accepted from any one applicant.
If an applicant has any other current SOSF grant, they cannot apply for a new grant.
All applications will be reviewed by the Ocean Storytelling Writing Grant judging panel and require final approval from the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
If successful, the SOSF Grant agreement between the Foundation and the applicant must be sent back by the deadline. This agreement cannot be modified.


PRIZES 

Three winners will be selected for the grant.
Each winner will receive a US$2,000 cash prize and will be given a paid writing assignment to document an SOSF-supported marine research or conservation project. He or she will take an all-expenses-paid trip to visit that SOSF project anywhere in the world to complete the assignment. The SOSF has funded more than 400 projects in more than 85 countries and each winning writer will be assigned to tell one of these stories.
The grantees will be mentored by Dr Helen Scales (marine biologist and bestselling author), Swati Thiyagarajan (conservation journalist at the Sea Change Project) and Dr Lauren De Vos (SOSF science writer). Dr James Lea (CEO of the SOSF) and Jade Schultz (SOSF content manager) join the panel as judges.
All winners will be given the chance to showcase their published marine conservation story assignment.

Department of Botany Travel Awards are presented annually to support the study of collections in
the United States National Herbarium. Typically, about four awards are made, each with an
allowance up to 4000 USD. Preference is given to students working on tropical plants. 

Cuatrecasas Award. This award commemorates the late Dr. José Cuatrecasas, who was associated
with the U.S. National Herbarium for over fifty years. He dedicated his career to the study of the
high elevation flora of northern South America, and he monographed or revised a variety of
neotropical angiosperm genera. 

Lyman B. & Ruth C. Smith Award. This award is intended to provide career development
opportunities for young scientists. The fellowship was created to honor the legacy of the late Dr.
Lyman B. Smith and his wife Ruth C. Smith. Dr. Smith, former Curator of Botany at the U.S.
National Herbarium, monographed several neotropical angiosperm families and contributed to
several flora projects of South America; his wife’s support was instrumental in his success. 

Harold E. Robinson & Vicki A. Funk Award. This award is restricted to the study of Asteraceae.
It honors the late Drs. Harold E. Robinson and Vicki A. Funk, both former Curators at the U.S.
National Herbarium, who devoted most of their careers to understanding the systematics and
phylogeny of this large and diverse family, especially in the Neotropics.

Convocatoria de becas de apoyo a la investigación

El Parque Natural del Alt Pirineu, a través de su Observatorio de Investigación, ha ideado una convocatoria de becas de apoyo a la investigación para captar proyectos de investigación en el ámbito del Parque. El Parque impulsa esta iniciativa conjuntamente con el Instituto para el Desarrollo y la Promoción del Alto Pirineo y Arán (IDAPA) y el Centre d'Art i Natura de Farrera, con la colaboración de la Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera. El objetivo de estas becas es generar conocimiento científico de proximidad en el ámbito de las ciencias de la Tierra, ciencias de la vida o ciencias sociales, y poner en valor el legado natural, cultural y social del Parque. Al mismo tiempo, este conocimiento servirá para mejorar la gestión y conservación del Parque a partir de una base científica más sólida, y también para divulgar el conocimiento generado en la sociedad local.

La convocatoria de becas recibe el nombre de "Salvador Grau i Tort", en homenaje a quien fue el principal coordinador de la creación del Parque Natural del Alt Pirineu durante el periodo 2001-2003, y que murió en 2016. Fue responsable del Servicio de Planificación del Entorno Natural de la Generalidad de Cataluña, y ejerció un liderazgo técnico clave para el diálogo y la concertación con los agentes del territorio para que el Parque Natural pudiera ser realidad el 1 de agosto de 2003. Al mismo tiempo, impulsó la cooperación e integración del conocimiento científico en la gestión de los espacios naturales protegidos a través del sistema de información del patrimonio natural.

El proceso de presentación de solicitudes estará abierto del 1 al 30 de junio de 2022 y la resolución se prevé para el mes de julio. En caso de ser seleccionada la solicitud, la beca cubrirá total o parcialmente los gastos de alojamiento y manutención de los beneficiarios durante la estancia en el Parque, así como otros gastos derivados de la investigación. El alojamiento podrá ser en el Centre d’Art i Natura de Farrera, o bien en cualquier otro alojamiento de la zona del Parque en función de las necesidades de la investigación. En caso de que el proyecto de investigación requiera hacer uso de laboratorios para conservación, tratamiento o análisis de muestras, la beca incluirá el acceso a los laboratorios e instalaciones del centro MónNatura Pirineus que la Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera tiene en Les Planes de Son (Pallars Sobirà).

Las solicitudes serán evaluadas colegiadamente por una comisión formada por miembros del Equipo Gestor y el Observatorio de Investigación del Parque, el Instituto para el Desarrollo y la Promoción del Alt Pirineu y Aran y el Centre d’Art i Natura de Farrera, de acuerdo con las prioridades de selección y criterios establecidos.

Se prevé que esta primera convocatoria tenga continuidad en un futuro para favorecer que el Parque Natural del Alt Pirineu se convierta en un destino científico y un referente en el traspaso de información entre la comunidad científica y el equipo gestor.

MSc/PhD Scholarships, The Wildlife Institute, Beijing Forestry University, China.

Beijing Forestry University (BFU) is currently offering funded positions for international students willing to study in China, under the Chinese Government Scholarship Scheme. Scholarships (both full and partial) are available for suitable candidates who wish to study for an MSc/PhD degree in the Wildlife Institute (WI) under School of Nature Conservation, BFU from September 2019.

WI was founded in 2008 with the goal of providing evidence for wildlife conservation and management within China and internationally. As a university based research unit, WI-BFU carries out interdisciplinary scientific research in fields such as wildlife ecology, evolution, conservation and wildlife management. WI has a strong focus on research and conservation of endangered feline species such as snow leopard, leopard, clouded leopard and tiger as well as symbolic terrestrial species such as Asian elephant and Bactrian camel. Projects in WI range from high plateau desert ecosystem in northwest China to tropical forest ecosystem in southwest China. In addition to an integrated network within China, such as State Forestry and Grassland Administration, China Wildlife Conservation Association, Vanke Public Welfare Foundation, WI has built strong international collaborations with the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, University of Oxford (WildCRU), Rocky Mountain Research Station, U.S. Forest Service, University of Southampton, IUCN and is in close collaboration with PANTHERA, Marwell Wildlife, WWF and ZSL. Through undertaking collaborative research, academic exchanges and the mutual cultivation of postgraduate students, WI has strengthened its international status and furthered its development as a well-known wildlife institute in China. Currently there are four PhD and two MSc international students who come from US, UK, Italy, Paraguay and Mongolia working in WI. Five international students (three PhDs and two masters) have graduated by the end of 2018.

MSc/PhD study possibilities in WI will ideally focus on the following aspects: Ecology and conservation of mammals, especially wild felids and their prey; Conflicts between large carnivores and human beings; Ecosystem services and management within and beyond protected areas; Landscape genetics and molecular ecology, while students with molecular background will be preferred and prioritized.

A full scholarship will provide:

· University fees (tuition, laboratory and learning materials, bench fees)

· On-campus accommodation (double room)

· Stipendiary living allowance (MSc: 3,000 RMB and PhD: 3,500 RMB per month)

· One-off settlement costs for relocation to China

· Comprehensive medical health insurance

As part of the Research Services team you will proactively contribute to the growth and development of research activity in the Kew Science Directorate. You will play a pivotal role in developing and critiquing proposals with researchers, providing detailed advice on how proposals can be strengthened to provide compelling cases for funding.

Through your experience you will be familiar in undertaking horizon scanning of opportunities for research support together with the strategic targeting of funding sources, thinking creatively in matching Kew's unique collections, databases and scientific expertise with new opportunities as they arise.

The successful candidate will have extensive grant writing experience and exceptional communication skills.

Qualified at least to degree level in a scientific discipline (or related discipline) with experience of working in a scientific environment.

Depending on the skillset of the applicant, we will consider this as either a full or part-time role with potential for some offsite working.

The salary will be £30,981 - £36,941 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

3 becas de 3000€ para viajes de estudio en áreas protegidas europeas

Investing in young professionals working for Protected Areas

Each year the EUROPARC Federation, with support from the Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S., awards three Alfred Toepfer Natural Heritage Scholarships to promising young conservationists, who are committed to working for the benefit of Protected Areas. The aim of the scholarships is to enhance international cooperation and to advance the quality, innovation and European dimension of Protected Area management.

Each scholarship is worth €3.000 and enables successful applicants to undertake a study visit on a particular theme to one or more Protected Areas in a European country. After the trip, the scholars are expected to present the Federation with their findings and a report. These reports are made available to EUROPARC members, as they are full of interesting facts on observation and solutions to common Protected Area management issues.

You will find all the reports since 2007 in our library.

The scholarships enhance international cooperation and the advancement of quality and innovation, and promote the European dimension of Protected Area management.

Every year themes of study visits are announced by EUROPARC and the application needs to ensure that the studies being proposed will address these themes.

Categories

This year, the categories open for applications are:

1. Biodiversity and Climate Change– Importance of values of N2000 sites and protected areas on reducing impacts of climate change and implementing the EU Biodiversity Strategy

2. Sustainable Development in Protected Areas – contribution to a resource-efficient, green and competitive low-carbon economy

3. Opportunities for Health and Well-being in Protected Areas – Contribution of protected areas to safeguard the European citizens from environment-related pressures and risks to health and wellbeing

4. Parks for People –Approaches and strategies to address local communities and how to involve particular groups into activities or management of protected areas

Candidates should indicate which theme they are choosing in the application form and explain their motivations.

Hasta el 20 de marzo permanecerá abierta la convocatoria de Becas Fundación BBVA dirigidas a titulados universitarios latinoamericanos para la realización del Máster en Espacios Naturales Protegidos en su edición de 2018.

Se trata de un programa de becas destinado a ofrecer una formación universitaria altamente cualificada en torno a los espacios naturales protegidos y su conservación, accesible desde trayectorias académicas y profesionales muy variadas, y que aspira a cubrir tanto el conocimiento de los sistemas naturales como las técnicas de manejo y los modos de intervención en el entorno socioeconómico.

Beca de formación en materia de tratamiento de información de residuos, suelos, ciclo del agua, calidad del aire y cambio climático (Logroño, España)

La beca tiene por objeto el tratamiento de la información ambiental recibida en materia de calidad ambiental y planificación en el ámbito de residuos, suelos, ciclos de agua, calidad del aire y cambio climático.

Beneficiarios
Ingeniero superior, Licenciado en Ciencias Ambientales, Biología, Geografía o titulaciones equivalentes. La fecha de finalización de los estudios no podrá ser anterior en más de tres años a la de la publicación de la convocatoria de la beca.

Cuantía económica y duración

El montante de la beca es el resultado de sumar doce mensualidades económicas de 1.122 euros (de lo que después se deducirá la cuota de su contribución a la SS y las retenciones de IRPF correspondientes), más los 422,88 euros correspondientes a las doce mensualidades de cotización a la SS que aporta el Gobierno de La Rioja. Es decir, la suma de doce mensualidades de 1.157,24 euros.

Abarcará el período comprendido entre el 1 de julio de 2016 y el 30 de junio de 2017. El becario se incorporará como tal a la unidad asignada para la realización de la formación en la fecha indicada en la resolución de concesión, interpretándose la no incorporación injustificada en dicho plazo como renuncia a la beca concedida.

El período máximo de duración, podrá prorrogarse, a propuesta del tutor de formación designado por la resolución de convocatoria, sin necesidad de nueva convocatoria por un segundo período hasta completar un máximo de 3 años, contados desde la fecha de incorporación, siempre que existan disponibilidades presupuestarias y el desarrollo de la formación del becario lo requiera o aconseje.

Técnico de campo en el ártico (Alaska, USA)

Have you ever wondered what’s it like to conduct research in the Arctic? You don’t have to wonder for long. I am offering a full-time temporary position located at the Toolik Field Station in Toolik Lake, AK, in June, July, and August 2016. During this time, you would be staying at a remote field camp, assisting arctic ground squirrel research. A stipend of $2,000 will be provided, but you must cover your own transportation to the field site. As a technician, your duties will include, but are not limited, to the following:
• Conducting population surveys of arctic ground squirrels, including locating
and indexing burrow networks and confirming presence or absence
• Assisting the handling and tagging of ground squirrels
• Conducting vegetation assessments
• Maintaining good working relationships with other scientists at field
station to support the goals of research

The ideal candidate is dependable, curious, and enthusiastic, doesn't mind
working in physically-taxing situations for long hours, and loves to be
outdoors in rugged conditions.

Ultimately the goal of the research is to understand the interaction of
climate change and arctic ground squirrel activity. This research is part of a
broad research program to understand the impacts of climate change on wildlife
based out of the University of Massachusetts and the Department of Interior
Northeast Climate Science Center under Dr. Toni Lyn Morelli.

Becas en biomedicina (USA y España)

La convocatoria internacional 2015 M+VISION COFUND de ayudas para personal investigador en imágenes de biomedicina en Madrid y Boston se publicó el pasado 14 de mayo y podrán presentarse solicitudes hasta el 15 de junio.

La Consejería de Educación de la Comunidad de Madrid convoca diez ayudas destinadas a especialistas en investigación avanzada en imagen biomédica. Esta convocatoria se enmarca dentro del programa M+VISION que cuenta con la colaboración del Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) y que está cofinanciado por el Séptimo Programa Marco de la Unión Europea.

Inicialmente, las ayudas consisten en 12 meses de beca que pueden ampliarse con hasta 24 meses de contrato, si se cuenta con una organización de acogida (universidad, centro de investigación, hospital o empresa), radicada en Madrid, que contrate en el segundo y tercer año a los investigadores. Las organizaciones de acogida contarán con una cofinanciación de hasta el 57% para la contratación del investigador.

La cuantía de las ayudas es la siguiente:
-              Beca (primer año): 43.000 €/año
-              Contrato (segundo y tercer año): Coste empresa de 65.000 €/año
-              Gastos para investigación (durante los tres años): 2.300 €/año
-              Gastos para viaje (durante los tres años): 3.300 €/año

Se convocan dos modalidades de ayudas en función del tipo de movilidad que contemplan:
-              Modalidad incoming (7 ayudas): los tres años de la ayuda se desarrollan en España.
-              Modalidad outgoing (3 ayudas): los dos primeros años de la ayuda se desarrollan en Estados Unidos y el tercer año en España.

Requisitos de los candidatos

-              Investigadores doctores o con al menos cuatro años de experiencia investigadora a tiempo completo equivalente, a contar desde la obtención del título que formalmente le habilita para iniciar los estudios conducentes a la obtención de un doctorado
-              Que tengan los estudios y la experiencia investigadora requerida en campos relacionados con la imagen biomédica
-              Que cumplan los requisitos de movilidad exigidos para la modalidad de ayuda seleccionada:
-              Modalidad incoming: en el momento de la solicitud, el solicitante no debe haber residido o llevado a cabo su actividad principal (trabajo, estudios, etc.) en España durante más de doce meses en los tres últimos años anteriores a la fecha de finalización del plazo de solicitud.
-              Modalidad outgoing: en el momento de la solicitud el solicitante debe ser residente en España y no debe haber residido o llevado a cabo su actividad principal (trabajo, estudios, etc.) en los Estados Unidos de América durante más de doce meses en los tres últimos años anteriores a la fecha de finalización del plazo de solicitud.
