The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Wild Genes team are looking for a dedicated Genomics Technician (Conservation Genetics). Based at Edinburgh Zoo, the team uses genetic data to inform the conservation of 10-15 species annually. This role will involve performing a range of molecular techniques to deliver quality data to the Wild Genes analysis team. Reporting to the Senior laboratory technician, you will be expected to maintain an organised laboratory environment and co-ordinate your lab work on multiple conservation projects. You will be expected to work closely with any students utilising the genetic lab; the analysis team; and our biobank. It is a full-time permanent role working 37.5 hours per week.

Who we are looking for:
The successful candidate will hold a BSc in a relevant scientific discipline or job experience in a relevant scientific role. They will need knowledge of standard molecular genetic laboratory techniques, be able to communicate well with visiting researchers/students, have experience of PCR based molecular genetic techniques and experience of DNA extraction.

Salary
The position sits within Band D (£26,610 - £30,592 Per Annum)

Contrato de dos años como asistente de investigación en biodiversidad de anfibios y reptiles de Melanesia 🐢🐍🦎🐸

Western Melanesia (including New Guinea) sits at the crossroads of Asia and Australia and is one of the most interesting, puzzling, and understudied hyper diverse regions on Earth. Clarifying how tectonic movements have sundered or joined different Melanesian landforms in the past several million years is key to understanding the origins of this biotic diversity. The Research Assistant will generate data to help us investigate how the diversity and evolutionary history of the five major geological landforms that comprise most of western Melanesia have impacted evolution of that region's biota and to identify those ancient insular landmasses critical in the origin of lineages that colonised and radiated across New Guinea, Australia, and/or insular Asia. The project will use herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) to address these evolutionary questions. The research will help to replace the outdated, unidirectional "out-of-New-Guinea" model for origins of Pacific biodiversity with a more dynamic and nuanced understanding that ancient, yet under-appreciated, land areas in Melanesia have long been important in shaping biotic evolution in the broader region. The project will use a combination of traditional sequencing methods alongside ultra-conserved elements from fresh and historic museum samples (aka archival DNA) and analyse these data with respect to new geological models to be generated by a project partner.

We are seeking to appoint a research assistant to help study the Origins of Western Melanesian Diversity on a 24 month, fixed-term contract. This project is funded by a joint NERC-NSF grant to Dr Simon Maddock (University of Wolverhampton, UK) and Dr Fred Kraus (University of Michigan, USA). The position will be based in the School of Sciences at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. You will possess the skills and knowledge to generate high-quality molecular sequence data.

You will have completed an MSc in biological sciences or an equivalent subject and have experience of molecular and phylogenetic methods. You will be responsible for generating sequence data (Sanger and sequence capture), analysing data, co-supervising lab work by undergraduate and postgraduate students, and, if interested, disseminating research. Good communication and organisational skills are essential attributes.

We wish to appoint a research technician to work on the NERC-funded project “Living at the edge: causes and consequences of individual variation in a changing world”.

The project studies the effects of landscape fragmentation on behaviour, physiology, morphology, life history and related traits (and their covariation) in a forest-living ground beetle species using individuals living at an edge of a habitat and those at a core. The project combines both experimental and correlative approaches and applies a wide range of methods in the field and laboratory. These range from enclosure experiments, translocations, radio- telemetry, and behavioural and physiological assays.

You will be supervised by Dr Wiebke Schuett (Project Lead) and Prof Jeremy Niven (both School of Life Sciences) and will work closely with other members of the research team, including a postdoctoral research fellow and a PhD student.

Candidates would ideally have a BSc in animal behaviour, ecology or an allied biological science. We expect a highly motivated, talented, well-organised and meticulous candidate with experience in behavioural observations and excellent team-working ability. The candidate will have a background in one or more of behavioural ecology, insect physiology, evolution and/or ecology. Holding a Masters degree, having previous experience in collecting data in the field and/or of insect behaviour, in conducting physiological assays, in insect husbandry, and/or in genotyping is advantageous. Holding a driving license is desirable.

Following its mission to analyze and document biodiversity in earth system dynamics – to serve science and society, Senckenberg fosters curiosity-driven and application-oriented research. In Senckenberg at Frankfurt we seek to fill the position of a Curator of Marine Invertebrates (m/f/d; tenure-track, full time).

We are looking for an internationally recognized invertebrate zoologist with an excellent research record in integrative taxonomy, systematics, evolutionary and/or ecological research on marine invertebrate organisms. The ideal candidate will apply modern approaches, using innovative methods to unlock scientific information from museum specimens, e.g. through imaging approaches (e.g. CLSM, μCT, environmental SEM) and/or molecular analysis.

The position will include responsibility and oversight for permanent scientific collections of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt, and preference will be given to candidates with experience in a relevant organismal group that aligns with existing collection strengths. In particular we are looking for candidates with an expertise in polychaetes, echinoderms, corals or sponges. Outstanding scientists working on other relevant taxa are also encouraged to apply. The associated, comprehensive and globally scientifically important collections of marine invertebrates at Senckenberg date back to the early 19th century and comprise scanning electron microscopic-, dry- and alcohol-preserved materials. Collections resources also include an excellent specialist library and digital archive.

Entomología, fotografía y colecciones zoológicas: trabaja digitalizando imágenes de abejas

UC Santa Barbara's Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration is offering a Digital Imaging Assistant (Lab Assistant II) position as part of the Big-Bee project (http://big-bee.net), a newly funded US National Science Foundation Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections initiative to understand bee declines via specimen image digitization and trait analysis. Over the course of three years, we will create over one million high-resolution 2D and 3D images of bee specimens, representing over 5,000 worldwide bee species, including most of the major pollinating species.We will develop tools to measure bee traits from images and generate comprehensive bee trait and image datasets to measure recent and deep evolutionary patterns.The Big-Bee network of participating institutions includes thirteen US institutions and partnerships with US government agencies. We will develop novel mechanisms for sharing image datasets and datasets of bee traits that will be available through an open, Symbiota data portal called the Bee Library. Reporting to the Director of the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara, the Digital Imaging Assistant will collaborate closely with the Director to lead the digitization of bee specimens from natural history collections at UCSB via 3D and 2D imaging. They will help develop novel methods in imaging and anatomical trait measurement, including crowdsourcing measurements via the Notes From Nature community science platform. Applicants for this position are expected from various disciplines because of the cross-cutting nature of the work, and applicants from entomology, media arts, engineering, digital arts, biodiversity data science, museum curation, or related fields are welcome. Job responsibilities include:
  1. implement imaging and processing workflows for 2D & 3D specimen imaging;
  2. evaluate results to determine scientific accuracy;
  3. organize, manage, and preserve digital files, including raw data, metadata, and derivatives;
  4. coordinate undergraduate imaging and research internships;
  5. create training and outreach materials in specimen imaging;
  6. assist in the overall coordination of the Big-Bee network;
  7. and perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred candidates will also demonstrate:
  1. knowledge of basic principles of photography;
  2. knowledge in insect morphology;
  3. knowledge about natural history collection databases, particularly Symbiota, and biodiversity data sharing;
  4. comfort with diverse software tools (Adobe) and online collaboration platforms (Google Documents, Slack, GitHub);
  5. writing and understanding of a scripting language (Python, R);
  6. the ability to meet a high level of production on a daily basis and work in a fast-paced, multi-project and dynamic environment;
  7. the ability to drive project completion on time and in a detailed manner, as well as self-motivation, intelligence, and strong work ethic;
  8. excellent organizational skills, good communication skills including writing and verbal;
  9. comfort with handling small delicate objects.
The person will join a research group focused on biodiversity data science and entomology. They will work closely with Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration Director, Dr. Katja Seltmann, who also has a background in media arts. The position is based at the University of California, Santa Barbara but includes cooperation with colleagues at other institutions. Opening of a permanent research position "Aquatic community ecology under global change" at INRAE Lyon, in the EcoFlowS team (https://ecoflows.inrae.fr/) of the RIVERLY research unit (https://riverly.inrae.fr/). 

Position description:

The RiverLy research unit combines hydrology, hydraulics, ecology, ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry to understand the ecological functioning and dynamics of river networks and guide their management. More specifically, the EcoFlowS team explores multi-scale eco-hydrology to understand and quantify ecological responses (eg. populations, communities, ecological processes) to different habitat proximal variables (eg. hydrology, hydraulics, sediments, temperature, dissolved oxygen, contaminants), natural or under human influences. This knowledge is used to support the management of river networks, including their biomonitoring and restoration. 

In the EcoFlowS team, you will model community responses (including taxonomic, functional or molecular approaches) to global change to develop innovative strategies to manage and protect river networks. In line with the scientific project of RiverLY, your research will integrate the local-scale effects of habitat drivers identified through mechanistic approaches into large-scale (from regional to international) models of biodiversity and ecosystem responses to environmental stressors associated with global change. You will test theoretical hypotheses from community ecology integrating the most recent conceptual (eg metacommunity theory, spatial ecology) and methodological (eg spatial statistical modelling, process-based models of dispersal) developments. You will quantify resistance and resilience capacities of aquatic communities to global change, accounting for the dendritic nature of river networks and their natural (eg drying) and anthropogenic (eg dams) fragmentation. To do so, you could use existing regional (eg LTER platforms, Water Agencies), national (eg French Biodiversity Office) and international (eg open-access databases) datasets, as well as the rich datasets available at EcoFlowS (eg Rhone river restoration monitoring, intermittent rivers database, glacial streams).

In RiverLY, your research will interact with other disciplines from the different research teams to integrate the ecological effects of various physical and chemical environmental factors. Thanks to this multidisciplinary context, you will lead projects to conserve, restore and manage riverine biodiversity under global change in line with national and EU legislations. Last, you will contribute to animating, programming and evaluating research within local research groups, as well as developing regional, national and international collaborations.

Requirements:
  • Holding a PhD in aquatic ecology
  • Strong international postdoctoral experience in modelling biological community responses to global change. 
  • During your career, you combined taxonomic, functional and/or molecular approaches from catchment to national or international scales, preferably on aquatic macro-invertebrates, but open to other biological groups such as fish. 
  • Skills in statistical modelling and data mining, you like working in a very collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated leadership abilities in multidisciplinary and highly visible projects.
  • You are fluent in English and must hold a long-time international experience abroad.

Both of these projects have staff, consumables, and sequencing funding for the next 5 years, so would suit postdocs interested in at least a 3 year commitment.

The successful candidate may start as soon as possible, preferably before May 2021. The salary will initially be provided for three years, with possibility of extension for another three years. Plants are living in a microbial world and with the threat of herbivores. However, it remains unclear how herbivores and microbes jointly shape plant evolution in nature. In this DFG-funded project, the candidate will lead a team in the Plant Adaptation-in-Action group to address this challenging question using an interdisciplinary approach.

During the course of the project, the candidate will mature his/her scientific skills and develop independence in project planning and management skills. In addition, the candidate will gain the opportunity to improve their leadership skills by leading a research team consisting of one PhD student and several MSc and BSc students. Requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a doctoral degree, or equivalent thereof, in biology, evolutionary genetics, bioinformatics or computer science. The candidate is expected to design, conduct and organize large scale field experiments and analyse large amount of next generation sequencing data, in particular, metagenomic data, with high degree of independence. Thus, a background in bioinformatics, evolutionary genetics and metagenomics is required. Applicants must demonstrate experience in statistics, metagenomics, data analysis and microbiology. Experience with field work, plant-microbe interactions or plant-herbivore interactions are a plus. Our group consists of people of various nationalities and teamwork is essential for all projects in the group. Therefore,
excellent communication skills, as well as proficiency in spoken and written English are expected. Good knowledge in German is a plus.

The Palaeogenomics group (https://www.animal-palaeogenomics.com/), led by Prof. Laurent Frantz, is a newly formed group, part of the Institute of Palaeoanatomy, Domestication and the History of Veterinary Medicine, within the Department of Veterinary Medicine. Our group is broadly interested in evolutionary genomics, archaeology, conservation biology and sustainable agriculture. We exploit the power of ancient and modern genomics to contrast current patterns of genetic diversity to those in the
past: this allows us to track evolutionary processes including artificial selection, extinction, speciation and domestication through time.

We are looking for a Laboratory Manager to facilitate the efficient operation of the ancient and modern DNA laboratories within the group. The contract is for an initial 1 year but is renewable for an additional 4 years, with the potential for longer-term extensions. The post-holder will lead the management and operation of the modern and ancient DNA facilities, sample processing, ancient DNA extraction, library preparation and sequencing. Additional roles include purchasing, shipments, safety
and general organization, training members and visitors of the lab in established workflows, and interaction with other scientists, students and technicians. The post-holder will also have the opportunity to be involved in research projects and publications, as well as to purse their own research ideas.

Role:
  • DNA extraction from biological substrates, and genomic library preparation.
  • Improvement of laboratory techniques through in-house optimization and innovation, and implementation of new advances and best practices.
  • Training other scientists in laboratory workflows.
  • Provide support for sample organisation including handling, shipping, managing internal databases, legal documentation and curation.
  • Assist with general administrative duties within research group, alongside other staff.

The successful candidate will work closely with the members of the data and wider science teams to develop and validate state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools and processes for sequence-based biodiversity data. Topics of current interest include data quality assurance, taxonomic assignment, and phylogeny-informed approaches for Illumina MiSeq metabarcoding data. Future work may focus on alternative technologies and approaches such as metatranscriptomics, shotgun metagenomics, and nanopore sequencing. The CLOVER project aims to inform farmers operating in Lombardy on good practices to reconcile agricultural activities with nature conservation. Thus it will be possible to preserve, restore and enhance agro-ecosystems.The research fellow must collaborate in the demonstration actions of the project for: management of paddy field and dynamic on farm conservation of Marsilea quadrifonia; management and mowing of wet meadows; management of paddy field and sowing of Lindernia procumbens; management of the minor irrigation network and spring restoration; economic enhancement of farms operating within the Natura 2000 network.
The research fellow will also have to continue morpho-functional studies on plant traits of alpine species compared with Apennine populations and will have to continue the development and processing of the data collected on climate change in the previous monitorings carried out by the University of Pavia.

Purpose

The project aims at understanding the impact of marine microplastic pollution on the ability of the ocean to export carbon from the surface to the deep ocean with a focus on zooplankton-plastic debris interaction. The main purpose of the role is to explore how the characteristics of plastics alter as a function of exposure to the marine environment; the vertical distribution and export of plastic over daily and seasonal timescales, and the role of zooplankton as vectors of plastics through the water column.

Work will encompass marine biogeochemical, biology and microplastic particle analysis and will include two multidisciplinary field campaigns (in the Southern Ocean and Mediterranean Sea), in which the post-holder will be involved in manipulative experiments and shipboard instrumentation and moored platforms deployment.

Qualification

PhD in marine environmental ecology or equivalent experience.

  • Contribute to the preparation and planning of CUPIDO research activities

The Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) in Berlin is looking for a quantitative scientist with a proven track record in dynamical modelling of wildlife populations and communities in space and time. Specifically, they are looking for a BioStatistician with strong background in one or several topics such as network theory and analysis, dynamic species interaction models, expertise in the analysis of animal (re-)location data and data integration techniques. The candidate is supposed to support in-house projects with statistical advice and develop an own research agenda. The position also welcomes support in teaching duties.

Prerequisites:

The Department of Ecological Dynamics focuses on understanding ecological dynamics in space and time and across gradients of human-altered environments. The Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig seeks a Head for the Centre of Molecular Biodiversity Research as a joint appointment of a chair in Molecular Biodiversity Research (W3) of the Museum and the University of Bonn. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Department of Biology, and the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) - Leibniz Institute of Animal Biodiversity are looking for a head of the Centre for Molecular Biodiversity Research (successor to Prof. Bernhard Misof) at the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig(Bonn), jointly appointed as Chair of Molecular Biodiversity Research (W3) by the University of Bonn and ZFMK. The ZFMK is a foundation under public law and member of the Leibniz Association. As an institution, it contributes to the research and conservation of global biodiversity, conducts taxonomic and molecular biodiversity research, documents and analyzes evolutionary and ecological biodiversity change and engages in public communication on biodiversity change and its potential causes. The ZFMK is an internationally renowned research institute for terrestrial and freshwater zoology and houses the Centre for Molecular Biodiversity Research, which is unique in Germany.

The ZFMK is looking for a strategically thinking and integrative scientist with international standing as head of the center who will further develop molecular biodiversity research as a bridge between basic research and applied biodiversity research at an internationally excellent level. Applicants should have leadership experience and must meet the requirements for a professorship (habilitation or habilitation-equivalent performance).

Scientific excellence and expertise should be evident, for example, in the fields of:
  • phylogenomics and its algorithms,
  • comparative/evolutionary genomics and its method development,
  • bioinformatics,
  • species-based molecular or computational biodiversity research.
We expect
  • applicants to demonstrate successful international networking,
  • substantial acquisition of third-party funding,
  • and the development of a future strategy of the center including the molecular lab and HPC infrastructure.
It is desirable that applicants are familiar with collection-based science.

Seven working groups with different expertise are cooperating in the Centre for Molecular Biodiversity Research. These range from bioinformatics, method development in phylogenomics and comparative genomics, comparative genomics of vertebrates and insects, evolutionary genomics, to molecular laboratory method development. In addition, the center operates the central molecular laboratory and the HPC cluster of the ZFMK. The new head of the center will have the opportunity to carry out research in an outstanding research environment, and cooperate with a young, dynamic and motivated team.

The University of Bonn, as one of the few Excellence Universities in Germany, offers an outstanding intellectual research environment. The Department of Biology at the University of Bonn and especially the Department of Zoology cooperate intensively with the ZFMK. The common research focus lies on the interaction between environment, phenotype and genome as a basis for an understanding of evolutionary as well as ecological biodiversity change. The W3 Professorship Molecular Biodiversity Research will be integrated in the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Ecology; the professorship will be filled for an unlimited period of time; the appointment will be based on the leave of absence model ("Jülich model"). The reduced teaching commitment of 2 SWS should be provided in the international Master's programme OEP Biology. The membership status of a professor can be granted.
