Leibniz Institute for Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) is looking for a scientist to fill the tenure track position of a Curator (m/f/d) for Crustacea in Hamburg starting July 1st 2021

We expect the candidate to:
  • hold a PhD in zoology or related areas, preferred with focus on Crustacea,
  • have experience in the curation of scientific collections,
  • be a designated expert in the taxonomy and biology of Crustacea,
  • have a strong publication record with a focus on evolution, taxonomy and systematics of crustaceans,
  • acquire substantial third-party funding,
  • support the scientific community in this field as well as their societies,
  • promote LIB-internal teamwork and external collaborations,
  • have a vision of future work in the field, and promote novel ideas for collection-based research.
The candidate will work in Centre for Taxonomy and Morphology and contribute to the ongoing development of LIB as a globally leading institute for the study of biodiversity change. As curator, the candidate will take responsibility for substantial crustacean collections housed by LIB in Hamburg. This includes collection care, service to the scientific community, development of the collection, digitization activities, and collection-based research, with special emphasis on taxonomy.

LIB provides research labs for molecular and morphological work, from imaging to genomics. The successful candidate is expected to work on a sound theoretical basis, to build up an independent research group, to apply an array of appropriate modern methods, to integrate into existing and future in-house collaboration, to contribute to teaching at the university, and to take part in self-administration

Leibniz Institute for Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) is seeking a Collection Manager (m/f/d) in Hamburg. The Collection Manager will play a central role in the implementation of high standards of curation, accessibility, digitization and protection of collections at LIB in Hamburg, in collaboration with curators and technical staff of the collections and the biodiversity informatics group at LIB.

We expect the candidate to
  • hold a university degree in biology, at least at the MSc level,
  • have working experience with scientific collections, preferably collection management (e.g., loan services, maintenance, pest control),
  • be familiar with pertinent legislations (such as the Nagoya Protocol, CITES) to support curators in the permitting process,
  • have practical experience with collection databases,
  • implement with the curators standards for documentation and security of the collections,
  • collect, curate, document, provide, and archive collection-related data and statistics (e.g. for reports, inquiries,and webpages),
  • engage in existing and participate in developing future concepts of digitization and collecting strategies,
  • participate and represent the collections in international and national digitization initiatives and collection networks,
  • help manage infrastructural collection development,
  • have excellent social, communication and organizational skills and the ability to work in teams as well as independently,
  • be fluent in English and preferably versed in a broad range of office, productivity, and database software applications.
The candidate will work at LIB Centre for Taxonomy and Morphology, Hamburg and contribute to the ongoing development of LIB as a globally leading institute for the study of biodiversity change.

Leibniz Institute for Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) is looking
for a Biodiversity Informatics Scientist (m/f/d) in Hamburg.

Biodiversity Informatics, within which the position is situated, develops research data infrastructures for LIB. Research data infrastructures primarily comprise all data from the collections and related research. This also includes data from genome research and biodiversity monitoring. Major goal of biodiversity informatics at LIB is the development of new tools, based on semantic web technologies, for the management of research data, e.g. to facilitate AI-based annotation and discovery of the data. The infrastructure makes the data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), scales with Big Data.

The main tasks of the biodiversity informatics scientist will be to advance the digitization of the natural history collections, contribute to the further development, expansion and usability of LIB's Digital Collection Catalogue (see e.g. https://collections.zfmk.de) in a national and international network of natural history collections, and to train scientists in digitization and management of specimen information. Research activities follow the goals of biodiversity informatics at LIB and promote new ideas for biodiversity informatics on a national and international level.

Your work tasks include
  • support in the digitization of collections (data acquisition, data transfers between databases) according to the digitization strategy at LIB (https://doi.org/10.20363/ZFMK-APP.DigitizationStrategy_V_1),
  • development and improvement of tools for collection-based research data acquisition, management, and dissemination based on the FAIR principles,
  • monitoring of data flows, consistency check of data packages, and troubleshooting,
  • training in the use of the databases, consultation of custodians and technical staff,
  • development of own, and participation in overarching research projects at LIB. 
Required knowledge and experience include
  • studies in life sciences or studies in computer science, ideally with work experience,
  • programming experience,
  • experience with design and implementation of databases,
  • knowledge of SQL and a scripting language (e.g. Python),
  • cleansing and harmonization of data, e.g. with OpenRefine.
Desired qualifications are
  • experience in working with natural history collections,
  • practical experience with collection databases, ideally DiversityWorkbench,
  • knowledge of data standards relevant to the field of natural history collections (DwC, ABCD, BCO).
