Beca de investigación de campo para trabajar con bonobos

About the project:
The BonDiv project (www.bondiv.org) is accepting applications for 2 research fellowships located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (https://bondiv.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/BonDiv-Fellows-Description_202301.pdf). The BonDiv project is a large-scale collaborative research project that aims to investigate and document bonobo intraspecific diversity, allowing for simultaneous study of multiple sympatric species. While current plans are for up to 5 sites, the project aims to expand up to 30 sites within the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Research sites are located in exceptionally remote regions, with no (or very little) internet connection (but with access to a satellite communicator).
Each site will accept two people with complementary expertise: a Congolese person with expertise in working remotely within the local culture and a Fellow with relevant scientific knowledge. The fellowship appointment will have a duration approximately 15-16 months and will begin with a training workshop in Kinshasa, DRC, in May 2023, followed by 13 continuous months at the respective field site, and finalized with data management and a second workshop in Kinshasa. We encourage all fellowship candidates to familiarize themselves with their country’s travel advisories before applying. Be advised, that all activities will fall within the geographic range of the bonobo, comprising the provinces of Tshuapa, Tshopo, Mai-Ndombe, Equateur, and Maniema.
About the Fellows:
Under the mentorship of local experts and the PIs Martin Surbeck, Erin Wessling, and Hjalmar Kuehl, each fellow will benefit from gaining valuable fieldwork and applied conservation experience, including data and sample collection that will contribute to the scientific understanding of the bonobo ecology including food availability, prey species, other sympatric wildlife, climate, and the relevance of human impact. Other learning opportunities will include the conducting of social surveys and the collection of a multitude of organic samples to support genetic, pathogen, diet, metabolomics, and isotope analyses of the bonobo ecosystem.
In order to standardize the methods of camera trap data collection, Fellows will be receiving training to refresh knowledge and gain first-hand experience with the installation of remote video cameras and subsequent regular revisits for maintenance and data download. Building upon the skills acquired and refreshed in the workshop, the fellow will then practice data collection, data entry, sample storage, and monthly reporting of progress and results in the field.
Along with the first-hand research data collection and analysis, fellows will also gain experience with other aspects of project management including hiring field assistants and reporting back to the PIs and the coordinator on budgetary and fieldwork status updates.
Those individuals who would be the best fit for the fellowship may have a combination of the attributes below:
undergraduate degree in biology or a related field
conversational competency in French and English
6 + months of fieldwork experience, preferably in remote areas of the tropics
to be proficient with email communication, MS Excel, and Word
good interpersonal and communication skills
experience working with an international team
communicate clearly and regularly via remote connections with coordinator/directors
comfortable to live and work in a context and culture potentially significantly different than your own
willing and able to live away from developed areas, isolated and with minimal living conditions (no plumbing, electricity, or housing) in extremely remote locations
experience with GPS, camera traps, and biological sample collection
proficiency with Cybertracker, QGIS, BaseCamp/MapSource
Expectations of conduct for Fellows: - respectful to members of local communities and wildlife - honest and accountable communication with project management - no drug use (including alcohol) allowed in camp or during working hours - sexual and/or gender-based harassment of any type will not be tolerated - failure of any of these points will be grounds for immediate dismissal at your own expense.
About the Fellowship:
This fellowship will offer:
unique opportunity to gain field experience in the central African rainforest with the world’s least-known ape species
fellows will receive rigorous training and gain proficiency in diverse research and scientific methods relevant for careers in applied conservation and ecological research
all expenses covered, including visa, roundtrip flights to Kinshasa (DRC), transport to/from the site, and lodging and food during the project
all necessary equipment to perform diverse sets of research
scientific contribution recognized in publications using samples or data that fellow collected
$450 monthly per diem to cover incidentals
The following will be the responsibility of the Fellow:
health insurance that covers emergency repatriation and liability, including COVID-related illness
vaccinations required for entry into DRC prior to departure, and any medications recommended for remote field work, including malaria prophylaxis
clothes, shoes, and personal field equipment (a suggested list of these items will be provided)

Convocatoria de becas de apoyo a la investigación

El Parque Natural del Alt Pirineu, a través de su Observatorio de Investigación, ha ideado una convocatoria de becas de apoyo a la investigación para captar proyectos de investigación en el ámbito del Parque. El Parque impulsa esta iniciativa conjuntamente con el Instituto para el Desarrollo y la Promoción del Alto Pirineo y Arán (IDAPA) y el Centre d'Art i Natura de Farrera, con la colaboración de la Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera. El objetivo de estas becas es generar conocimiento científico de proximidad en el ámbito de las ciencias de la Tierra, ciencias de la vida o ciencias sociales, y poner en valor el legado natural, cultural y social del Parque. Al mismo tiempo, este conocimiento servirá para mejorar la gestión y conservación del Parque a partir de una base científica más sólida, y también para divulgar el conocimiento generado en la sociedad local.

La convocatoria de becas recibe el nombre de "Salvador Grau i Tort", en homenaje a quien fue el principal coordinador de la creación del Parque Natural del Alt Pirineu durante el periodo 2001-2003, y que murió en 2016. Fue responsable del Servicio de Planificación del Entorno Natural de la Generalidad de Cataluña, y ejerció un liderazgo técnico clave para el diálogo y la concertación con los agentes del territorio para que el Parque Natural pudiera ser realidad el 1 de agosto de 2003. Al mismo tiempo, impulsó la cooperación e integración del conocimiento científico en la gestión de los espacios naturales protegidos a través del sistema de información del patrimonio natural.

El proceso de presentación de solicitudes estará abierto del 1 al 30 de junio de 2022 y la resolución se prevé para el mes de julio. En caso de ser seleccionada la solicitud, la beca cubrirá total o parcialmente los gastos de alojamiento y manutención de los beneficiarios durante la estancia en el Parque, así como otros gastos derivados de la investigación. El alojamiento podrá ser en el Centre d’Art i Natura de Farrera, o bien en cualquier otro alojamiento de la zona del Parque en función de las necesidades de la investigación. En caso de que el proyecto de investigación requiera hacer uso de laboratorios para conservación, tratamiento o análisis de muestras, la beca incluirá el acceso a los laboratorios e instalaciones del centro MónNatura Pirineus que la Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera tiene en Les Planes de Son (Pallars Sobirà).

Las solicitudes serán evaluadas colegiadamente por una comisión formada por miembros del Equipo Gestor y el Observatorio de Investigación del Parque, el Instituto para el Desarrollo y la Promoción del Alt Pirineu y Aran y el Centre d’Art i Natura de Farrera, de acuerdo con las prioridades de selección y criterios establecidos.

Se prevé que esta primera convocatoria tenga continuidad en un futuro para favorecer que el Parque Natural del Alt Pirineu se convierta en un destino científico y un referente en el traspaso de información entre la comunidad científica y el equipo gestor.

Empieza tu propio grupo de investigación en biodiversidad y evolución en el Museo de Historia Natural de Suecia

The Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) is hiring a tenure-track researcher in Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), within the field of biodiversity and evolution. The appointed researcher will receive a start-up package of 17 M SEK, which includes funding to establish their own independent research group.

The NRM (www.nrm.se) is a major research institute with state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated laboratories that enable high-quality research on a broad range of natural history topics. The museum is located in Stockholm, which by many is regarded as one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, and is home to a vibrant scientific community with several leading research institutes, including the world-leading research infrastructures at the Science for Life Laboratory, nearby Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology.

The research position is funded by the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), which is a 12-year initiative funded with a total of 3.1 billion SEK from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (for more details, see www.scilifelab.se/data-driven). The DDLS Fellows will be recruited as independent group leaders at the respective host institution, and will have the opportunity to link up with other local research groups as well as the within the national DDLS programme.

Each DDLS Fellow will receive a recruitment package of 17 MSEK, which is meant to cover 5 years of his/her own salary, two PhD students andtwo postdoc positions, as well as running costs. The Fellow positions are tenure-track, and the universities/organizations will assume the long-term responsibility of their support as tenured faculty.


RESEARCH TOPIC

DDLS in biodiversity and evolution concerns research that takes advantage of the massive data streams offered by techniques such as high-throughput sequencing of genomes and biomes, continuous recording of video and audio in the wild, high-throughput imaging of biological specimens, and large-scale remote monitoring of organisms or habitats. This research subject area aims to lead the development or application of novel methods relying on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or other computational techniques to analyze these data and take advantage of such methods in addressing major scientific questions in evolution and biodiversity.

More specifically, at the NRM this research will be aimed at developing a deeper and dynamic understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem change, and to enable predictions on environmental change on global and local ecosystems. The scientific topics comprise the development and evolution of life, biodiversity, human evolution, environmental research or landscape ecology. From a methodological perspective, examples of such research include analyses of large-scale data within phylogenetics, population genetics or metagenomics, as well as image analysis or research on morphological and distributional data.


ELIGIBILITY AND ASSESSMENT

In order to qualify for the DDLS Research Fellowship, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree in Sweden or an equivalent degree from another country. The position is primarily aimed at applicants who have received such a degree no more than eight years before the deadline for applications.

Since the DDLS Fellowships are aimed at early career researchers, having completed a PhD degree within the last eight years will constitute an important merit. During the selection process, special attention will also be given to research excellence within the field of DDLS in biodiversity and evolution. The applicants will also be evaluated on the basis of the planned research within the subject field, as well as experience in leadership and student supervision and track record in obtaining research grants.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The candidate will be employed as researcher until further notice, but no longer than five years. The contract may be extended under special circumstances, such as due to sick leave or parental leave. The successful DDLS candidate will be offered the choice to be employed at the department within the museum that best fits the candidate’s research profile. The museum’s life science departments are Bioinformatics and Genetics (BIO), Botany (BOT), Environmental Research and Monitoring (MFÖ),
Palaeobiology (PAL) and Zoology (ZOO).

The DDLS Fellows at NRM will, upon a successful evaluation of their project, be offered the opportunity for their employment to be transformed into a permanent researcher position financed by NRM. Researchers employed at the NRM, including DDLS Fellows, also have the opportunity to apply
for promotion to full professor

Ikerbasque - the Basque Foundation for Science, has launched a new call offering 20 positions for postdoctoral researchers. These positions are financed by the Basque Government and the host institution where the researcher will develop his/her research: therefore, the acceptance letter of the host institution is mandatory.

These five-year Fellowships are directed to promising young researchers; they are intended to offer a track towards a PI role and independent research. The selected Fellows should be able to acquire the necessary skills for a research leader role. Ikerbasque is committed to offer a long-term career to the research community: Fellows in their 5th year can be assessed for a permanent position.

The applicants must have their PhD completed between 1/1/2010 and 31/12/2018.

Applications from women are especially welcomed. The eligibility period will be extended under special circumstances such as maternity.
