Job posting ref. #01-22014

For over 200 years the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung represents one of the most relevant institutions investigating nature and its diversity. Currently, scientists from more than 40 countries conduct research in the fields of biodiversity, earth system analysis and climate change in seven Senckenberg Institutes across Germany.

Following its mission to analyse and document biodiversity in earth system dynamics – to serve science and society, Senckenberg fosters curiosity-driven and application-oriented research. In Senckenberg at Frankfurt we seek to fill the position of a Bioinformatician

This position is funded by a five-year project designed to combine cutting edge technology for studying both the anatomical and genomic basis for evolutionary novelties in molluscs, and test whether genomic novelties are more strongly associated with armour and shell morphology or rather physiological adaptations that allow the invasion of new niche spaces.

Your job would be to provide bioinformatics capacity especially in de novo genome assemblies of mollusc species.

Your tasks:
  • Genome assembly and annotation of mollusc species that are sequenced via the LOEWE TBG and external partners using state-of-the- art sequencing technologies and compute infrastructure
  • Support other members of the research group working on morphological features to identify specific research questions
  • Perform independent research in collaboration with other members of the research group, the LOEWE-TBG, Senckenberg Ocean Species Alliance, and external collaborators on molluscan genomics
  • Perform comparative analyses of resulting genomes including for phylogenomics
Your profile:
  • Master degree or equivalent training and experience in bioinformatics / computational biology, genomics or a related area; a PhD degree in these fields is an advantage but not strictly required
  • Experience with shell scripting and Unix tools
  • Previous experience in genomics, genome assembly and/or annotation using non-model organisms, preferably molluscs
  • Familiarity with measures of genome assembly data quality and completeness, troubleshooting, screening data for contamination
  • Genuine curiosity and interest in nature, the oceans and their inhabitants, and especially molluscs

What can you expect?
  • An interesting and challenging task in a dynamic and stimulating team of researchers, technicians and communicators
  • Excellent benefits and work-life balance: Flexible working hours – dual career service – leave of absence due to family reasons – parent-child-office – annual special payment – company pension scheme – Senckenberg badge for free entry in museums in Frankfurt – leave of 30 days/ year
Senckenberg supports equal opportunity for men and women and places an emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women and under-represented groups. Qualified women and other under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Part time options are available. Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference.

Senckenberg is a globally connected institute. The working language within this project is English. Frankfurt is a vibrant, international, culturally diverse city and one of the world’s travel hubs. We welcome candidates from all nations and will provide support with your relocation process.

Location: Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Volume of employment: 100 % full-time position (40 weekly working hours)
Type of contract: Employment shall start as soon as possible and will be limited for a two-year contract
Remuneration: According to a German public service collective agreement TV-H EG 13

Postdoc taxonómico combinando filogenética y microscopía/morfología de hongos

Oferta compartida por Nuria

We offer a 2-year postdoc position within a project financed by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative.

The project aims to improve the knowledge about the species diversity in the order Atheliales and to sort the species into a taxonomic system based on evolutionary relations. A special focus will be given to the genus Athelia for which previous studies have identified difficulties to delimit species based on morphology. The position includes evaluating species boundaries using molecular methods and to evaluate any morphological differences based on those analyses. It will therefore include field work to collect material, and to search for new species within the order, and contact with herbaria for loans of materials. It includes lab work for extraction and amplification of DNA and also morphological studies including microscopy, and depiction of morphological characteristics. Since the present classification into genera often do not represent evolutionary relations, the classification will be revised which will require phylogenetic analyses.

Requirements
PhD degree in biology or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in biology. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree less than three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
The applicant should have experience from field work, working with biological materials, generating and analyzing DNA data and performing and interpreting phylogenetic analyses. The applicant should be fluent in both written and spoken English, and have experience of writing scientific texts in English.
The applicant should be able to work independently, but also work well in groups and be able to give and receive constructive criticism.

Additional qualifications
Knowledge in fungal taxonomy and description of species is desirable. Especially knowledge and practical experience of corticiod fungi and Swedish conditions.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, 24 months. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 2022-07-01 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
Find more details here, and submit your application through Uppsala University's recruitment system.
Please submit your application by 4 of April 2022, UFV-PA 2022/545.

3 plazas de postdoc en temas relacionados con biología evolutiva del desarrollo.

Oferta compartida por Nuria

The Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, German, is a traditional university with a strong research profile located in central Germany. It is a university that covers a wide range of disciplines. Research is focused on the areas Light-Life-Liberty. Our university collaborates closely with research institutions, research companies and renowned cultural institutions. With around 18,000 students and more than 8,600 employees, the university plays a major role in shaping Jena's character is a cosmopolitan and future-oriented city. The Institute for Zoology and Evolutionary Research conducts modern zoological research with a comparative evolutionary perspective. The research topics range from entomology to functional vertebrate morphology, comparative developmental biology and animal physiology.

The Hejnol Lab invites applications for 2 Postdoc positions and the Olsson Lab seeks 1 postdoc. The positions are to be filled with 3 Research Assistants (PostDocs) in Evolutionary Developmental Biology of animals (f/m/d) commencing on 01. April 2022.

The Hejnol Lab offer several projects that range from genomic analysis, morphology, to advanced comparative developmental biological approaches of non-model organisms. We combine advanced methods in molecular biology, genomics, electron- and light microscopy, and single cell-omics to study a range of marine and limnic non-model organisms. The projects will connect the genotype-level of organisation with the phenotype and compare the results using the comparative evolutionary approach. The postdocs are expected to use existing technology and moving the implementation of modern techniques to non-model species forward. It is expected to solve current questions in animal evolutionary biology that relate to the evolution of cell types, organ systems, developmental pathways, physiological processes, and the interaction of the organism with the environment. A large list of interesting evolutionary modifications including developmental, physiological, and morphological traits in non-vertebrate species is available to be studied, and choices can be influenced by the preference of the postdoc. Active contribution in teaching and outreach, e.g., through the Phyletic Museum is expected. The mission of our groups is to understand how nature's fascinating phenotypic diversity has evolved and how genomic, cellular and developmental changes led to this diversity. The work in the Hejnol lab includes bioinformatic and embryological work. Since the Principal Investigator Andreas Hejnol is also director of the Phyletic Museum the lab actively contributes to its outreach activities. English is the working language in our lab.

The Olsson Lab works on comparative developmental studies of the head in vertebrates. The focus has so far been on amphibians and fishes, but the postdoc is of course free to work on other organisms. Main questions include the transition to biphasic and terrestrial life cycles and the evolution of novelties associated with these transitions. Techniques used includes fate mapping, gene down- and up-regulation and gene editing. Three-dimensional reconstruction of embryonic and larval anatomy using confocal microscopy, microCT and the synchrotron at DESY - in addition to histology - is central to our research, as is standard methods such as clearing-and-staining, antibody-staining and in-situ hybridization. Depending on the seniority of the candidate, the degree of independency can be increased with the opportunity to attract own funding, design own courses and develop an own research path. The independency will be visualised by e.g. own webpage. Further, the opportunity for a habilitation will be provided.
