2 PhD positions in Marine Ecology and Marine Microbiology

For a joint project within the framework of “Bioacid II: Biological Impacts of ocean acidification (phase II)” the Helmholtz Centre of Ocean Research GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany and the Christian-Albrechts University, Kiel, Germany seek highly motivated and excellent candidates owning a Master’s or Diplom degree for the following 2 PhD positions in Marine Ecology and Marine Microbiology starting September 1st, 2012 (provided funding is granted). The 2 PhD projects are part of the Bioacid II benthic consortium which will investigate in joint and interdisciplinary mesocosm experiments the biogeochemical, genetic, physiological, evolutionary and ecological impacts of multifactorial climate change on benthic communities. More detailed information can be found at www.geomar.de/en/research/fb3/fb3-eoe/fb3-eoe-b/. Candidates should have a good knowledge in written and spoken English is expected. 1. Interaction between intraspecific genetic diversity and environmental stress in early life-stage macroalga (Geomar, Kiel) The focus will be on the two-way interaction between intraspecific genetic diversity and environmental stresses in early life-stage Fucus vesiculosus. The candidate will expose experimental populations of different genetic diversity levels to single and combined stressors and evaluate stress sensitivity at the population level The candidate should have a background in marine ecology and/or evolutionary ecology. 2. Biofilm restructuring and refunctioning (CAU, Kiel & Geomar, Kiel) This project will assess the shifts in microbial community compositions on the macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus in response to various combinations of stressors using molecular tools. The respective consequences for the macroalga associated with its microbiota and microalgae as well as potential adaptation strategies will be elucidated in close collaboration with the other projects. The candidate should have a broad background in microbiology and microbial ecology; knowledge on molecular tools and bioinformatics are welcomed. For more information contact Dr. Inken Kruse (ikruse@geomar.de, position 1) or Prof. Dr. Ruth Schmitz-Streit (rschmitz@ifam.uni-kiel.de, position 2). This is a part-time position (TVöD 13, minimum 50%) and cannot be split. The position is available for 3 years. The 2 institutes are equal opportunity employers and encourage female scientists and scientists with disabilities to apply.
