Tenure Track Position in Integrative Population Biology

Field and Location The Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Oulu announces a tenure-track opening for a researcher in Integrative Population Biology (IPOB). The position is located at the Department of Biology, and IPOB is a researcher community intending to develop population biological research broadly. The four integrative research challenges of IPOB are A. functional biology of adaptation, B. ecological interactions and evolutionary conflicts, C. phenotypic and genetic adaptation in temporally and spatially varying environments, and D. statistical modeling from genes to the community level. The research themes of the tenure track researcher are expected to cope with these challenges, and the research plan should specifically describe the integrative aspects of the applicant´s theoretical and empirical research. The tenure track position is open to highly talented researchers who hold a doctoral degree, have excellent potential for a successful scientific career, and can b roadly co-operate among biologists in the context of IPOB. The successful applicant of this call will be placed at the level of Associate Professor in tenure track system and is expected to qualify as Full Professor after 1-2 five-year periods. Career advancement on the tenure track is based on regular performance assessment that measure the candidate’s merits in all these areas. Required qualifications are following: Associate Professor: When appointing a person to the position of an associate professor the applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria: - Publications on an international level: dissemination, quality of the publication forums, references to the publication - Active role in the research training - Acquisition of additional funding - Working in more than one research facility during one’s career (in most fields represented at the University of Oulu this signifies working abroad) - An active role in the international scientific community - Acknowledgements and awards The position of an associate professor is initially a fixed-term position for five years, but a continuation period may be granted or the position may be made permanent. Being granted continuation for the position requires meeting the above-mentioned criteria as well as successful research work as indicated in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines. Salary The salary of the appointed researcher will be based on the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary of the appropriate tenure track level, supplementary salary bill be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3 % of the basic salary level for the post. The salary thus being roughly 4000 - 5300 euros per month for an associate professor. Assistant and associate professorships have been established to promote the careers of junior scientists. The initial appointment is for three or five years, respectively, with the possibility of renewal for an additional period and promotion of an assistant professor to an associate professor and an associate professor to a permanent position as an associate or full professor. The full professorships are permanent with a possibility for a promotion to a distinguished professor position.
