Postdoc in Evolution and Resilience of barrier island systems (Portugal)

A postdoctoral grant is available to conduct research within the Project EVREST - "Evolution and Resilience of barrier island systems", at CIMA – Universidade do Algarve.

Location: CIMA (Centre for Marine and Environmental Research), University of Algarve, Portugal

Scientific Domain: Marine Sciences and Earth Sciences

Position: Post-Doctoral fellow

Qualifications: PhD degree in Geosciences or Marine Sciences; experience in processing spatial data and management of GIS platforms; background in coastal sedimentary processes. Preference will be given to researchers with experience in numerical modelling.

Job description: The candidate will be working within the project EVREST – Evolution and Resilience of barrier island systems, ref. PTDC/MAR-EST/1031/2014. The main objective of the project is to identify barrier resilience mechanisms, quantify timescales of environmental change and evaluate scenarios of barrier evolution. The candidate will be required to analyse spatial data (e.g. aerial photographs, LIDAR survey) and create a GIS platform. Spatial data will be analysed together with time-series of hydrodynamic variables, to construct a global representation of barrier system processes and trends. Numerical modelling will be used to define future scenarios. Dissemination of results will be undertaken to the international scientific community, as well as to the general public. Expected outcomes from this job are (1) development of a GIS database; (2) characterisation of the eco-geomorphological evolution of the barrier system; (3) scenarios of future evolution under several types of impacts; (4) scientific publications; and (5) development of materials for dissemination to the general public.

Grant: Minimum duration is 6 months, renewable until the end of the project (May 2019). Monthly income of 1,495 euros.

Selection criteria: 1. Qualifications (0-5 points); 2. Experience in above mentioned data processing (0-6 points); 3. Publication in academic journals (0-5 points); 4. Interview (0-4 points). A first evaluation of candidates will be made on the basis of the first 3 criteria. The best candidates will be called for an interview (in person or video-conference).

Juri: Ana Matias; Óscar Ferreira; Ana Rita Carrasco; Teocharis Plomaritis (alternate).
