Two PhD Studentships

Mucosal Immunology and Neuroscience
University of Sheffield

starting October 2004:
Applications are invited for two research studentships available for 3 years from October 2004, within the University of Sheffield. One project is based within the Oral Neuroscience Research Group and under the direction of Professor Fiona Boissonade, Professor Peter Robinson and Dr David Andrew, aims to investigate the role of uninjured primary afferents in the initiation of trigeminal neuropathic pain. Research training will be provided in the areas of immunocytochemistry, quantitative histology and electrophysiology. Applicants should hold a dental degree or a degree in physiology, neuroscience or a related discipline. The second project, in mucosal immunology is within the Oral Health and Disease Research Group under the direction of Dr Paula Farthing, Dr Simon Whawell and in collaboration with Dr Peter Kilshaw at the Babraham Research Institute Cambridge. The project will use contemporary biochemical, cell and molecular biology techniques to investigate the interaction of oral and skin keratinocytes with specific subsets of T cells important in autoimmunity, tumour and graft rejection. Applicants should have at least an upper second degree in biological science or a related subject.

The successful applicants will be part of an expanding and thriving research community based in the School of Clinical Dentistry in Sheffield which received a 5 rating in the last RAE.

Award: Fess at the home student rate and a stipend of £10,500 pa.
