EDITOR of the Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State

This is a one-year position with possible extension, located in either Albany or Ithaca, NY. Incumbent will work directly unnder supervision of Milo Richmond with overall guidance from a technical group comprising the Breeding Bird Atlas Steering Committee. Functions will include: editing with a co-editor the content, quality, and technical accuracy of the Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; solicitation of artwork and species accounts, review of species accounts with corresponding artists and authors, and compilation of the entire manuscript for delivery to the publishers. Also, review of galley proofs for accuracy, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Track and enter revisions to a database which will be updated regularly. Work directly with publishers to assume timely delivery of the finished product. As co-editor the incumbent is expected to work collegially and be sensitive and responsive to the needs of our partnering professionals which includes the Federation of New York State Bird Clubs, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Department of Natural Resources and Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University as well as, the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, and National Audubon Society of New York.
Emphasis will be given to effective written and oral communication, ability to meet deadlines, and maintenance of a productive, collegial working relationship with a co-editor and a Breeding Bird Atlas Steering Committee which represents the above partners. Qualifications Bachelor s degree; 2 or 3 years of experience or equivalence in Natural Sciences with a preferred emphasis in ornithology or related discipline (e.g. biological sciences, forestry, wildlife management, conservation). Experience with information management, in both digital and printed formats, familiarity with mainstream computer applications software including word processing and publishing software spreadsheets is also required. Incumbent must be able to work independently. Must be personable, flexible, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and oral). Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize, develop an effective working relationship with a wide variety of practicing resource professionals. Must be able to work within a team setting yet remain focused on the over task of preparing accurate data-based copy for publication. Travel is required so must possess a valid driver s license.
