The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is an internationally recognized research and teaching unit. The department covers Aquatic Sciences, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science and Technology. The department houses the Finnish Center of Excellence in Evolutionary Research and part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Virus Research. The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology unit in the Department of Biological and Environmental Science at the University of Jyväskylä has a long and strong tradition in experimental hypothesis testing. The unit is arguably one of the world.s leading groups in experimental evolutionary ecology, and the rigorous testing of evolutionary hypotheses in the unit has had an impact on evolutionary biology worldwide. As a result, evolutionary ecology has been an important strategic area of research at the University of Jyväskylä, as evidenced by two recent Centers of Excellence (Evolutionary Ecology, 2000-2005 and Evolutionary Research, 2006-2011) and two Academy Professor positions funded by the Academy of Finland.

The department is currently seeking to recruit staff to the following position:

* University researcher in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, starting from 1 December 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.



The university researcher is expected to conduct and supervise research in theoretical ecology and evolutionary biology. The successful applicant will be expected to have a strong background in mathematics and ecology, evolutionary biology, and genetics. Ideally the research strengths of the applicant will bridge our unit.s active research in evolutionary ecology and evolutionary genetics. A focus on theory will facilitate collaboration between our existing research groups, enhance our joint research with international colleagues and allow us to continue to make significant contributions to science. We also encourage persons with theory-relevant experimental research background to apply this position. A successful candidate is expected have a PhD degree in a relevant field and post-doctoral research experience with excellent records in scientific research and supervision of research. A long-term commitment to the position is vital. The tasks include teaching responsibilities at the advanced level up to 10% of the working hours.

This position is first filled for a 5-year period with the expectation that by the end of the term the candidate will have demonstrated eligibility for an open-ended contract. In such cases the fixed-term contract can be extended to be open-ended up to professor level upon further external evaluation. An especially highly qualified applicant can be offered an open-ended researcher or temporary professor contract directly, with corresponding responsibilities. The Faculty will appoint an external referee to assess the qualifications of the top candidates.

A professor is expected to have a PhD, high level scientific qualifications, records in directing research programs and in educating undergraduate, graduate and PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers, as well as records of international cooperation in his or her field of expertise.

The salary system in the University of Jyväskylä consists of a basic work demand level and a personal performance evaluation. The job demand for a university researcher ranges between levels 5-7 (2636,80 - 3589,46 EUR/month), and for a professor between levels 8-11 (4,176.45 - 6,091.80 EUR/month). Based on personal performance, this can be supplemented by up to 46.3%.
