2 positions for biologists working with sea turtles (Florida, USA)

Clearwater Marine Aquarium (Clearwater, FL) is accepting applications for 2
positions: Sea Turtle Biologist and  Associate Sea Turtle Biologist. Further

POSITION TITLE:  Associate Sea Turtle Biologist

REPORTS TO:  Manager Sea Turtles & Aquatic Biology

SUPERVISES: None

EXEMPT OR NON-EXEMPT: Non Exempt

PERCENTAGE OF FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT:  100%

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to lift minimum 50 pounds, be comfortable in
water, work in extreme weather conditions (hot, humid, rain)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

    Associate Biologist will assist in all aspects of the Sea Turtle &
Aquatic Biology Department, including sea turtle nesting.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


 Assist in the care of resident sea turtles including: food preparation,
exhibit maintenance, water quality, animal records and routine medical care.
Assist in the rehabilitation of sea turtles including all aspects of animal
medical care, medical records and release.
 Follow all Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC) requirements for all aspect of
sea turtles, knowledge of permitting and reporting for FWC.
Demonstrated ability to educate the public about the impact of lighting,
beach debris, habitat destruction, and marine pollution with regard to sea
turtles.
 Assist in the life support systems and water quality
Training volunteers and interns.
Assist in veterinary procedures.
Assist in sea turtle and marine mammal stranding events.
Participate in scientific sea turtle research projects that may be identified
Assist with exhibit upkeep and enrichment design

EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS


Scuba and CPR certifications required
BS degree with emphasis on Biology, Environmental Science or Zoology
Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft office
Strong people skills
A team-oriented attitude
Minimum 1 year in Animal Care/ Rehabilitation
Must hold a valid Florida drivers license

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

To care for all the animals within the Sea Turtle & Aquatic Biology
division, Train other staff members and volunteers in the daily
responsibilities within the department. Conduct public presentation to
educate our guests about our animals and our mission.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


Assist in all aspects of sea turtle nesting including: surveys, nest
relocation, caging, hatchling release, nest monitoring and inventory and
staff/interns/volunteer training and supervision.
Assist in the care of aquatic animals including: food preparation, exhibit
maintenance, water quality, and routine medical care.
Assist in the rehabilitation of sea turtles including food preparation, tube
feedings, injections, wound care, and blood draw.
Maintaining paper and computer records for all areas in the department.
Capable of identifying species of aquatic animals including but not limited
to fish, invertebrates, sea turtles etc.
Capable of identifying marine fish diseases and initiate treatment as
prescribed by the veterinarian
Demonstrated ability to educate the public about the impact of lighting,
beach debris, habitat destruction, and marine pollution with regard to sea
turtles.
Must be able to conduct all water quality testing, life support operations
as well as training staff/volunteers in the proper testing techniques and
operations
Understand  husbandry procedures and the use of behavior modification on
aquatic animals
Assist in advanced veterinary procedures as needed.
Assist in sea turtle and marine mammal stranding events.
Work both individually and as a team
Participate in scientific research projects related to aquatic animals

EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


BS degree with emphasis on Biology, Environmental Science or Zoology
Experience with Sea Turtle Nesting
Minimum 3 years experience in related field
Must possess a valid Florida drivers license
Strong people skills
A team oriented attitude
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a nationally recognized SCUBA and
CPR certificate within one year of employment
