A Ph. D. position at the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB) is available to a highly motivated student who wishes to investigate processes regulating cell division. When animal and plant cells divide their nuclei undergo dramatic changes. The nuclear envelope that encloses the cell’s chromatin disassembles to allow proper segregation of the chromosomes to the daughter cells by the mitotic spindle. Subsequently, the nuclear envelope reforms around the decondensing chromatin. Each of these steps is very important for genome stability and for the cell to function. The focus of the Ph. D. project will be to identify and characterize genes essential for mitotic spindle assembly and nuclear envelope formation using the nematode C. elegans as biological model system.
The project will be supervised by myself as senior researcher under the Ramón y Cajal programme and is to be carried out in the laboratory of Dr. Cayetano Gonzalez at the PCB. The laboratory and the PCB harbour state of the art equipment and core facilities including confocal microscopes, which are fundamental to the project.
A background in molecular biology, cell biology or biochemistry is preferred although candidates with degrees in other life sciences are invited as well. Funding is available for three years; nevertheless candidates are encouraged to obtain personal fellowships.
