The UNEP/GEF Project "Reversing environmental degradation trends In the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand" is the first major collaborative project involving seven countries bordering the South China Sea and the direct execution of activities by some 45 key national institutions and organisations.
A senior scientist from the region is needed to assist the Project Director in ensuring successful development of the regional Strategic Action Programme, supporting national action plans and execution of demonstration site activities.
Duties and responsibilities : Under the overall supervision of the Director, UNEP Division of Global Environmental Facility Co-ordination, the incumbent will assist the Project Director in planning and management of project activities, including: assistance in financial planning and management; regional co-operation and collaboration; liaison with country focal points; and day-to-day management of the Project Co-ordinating Unit. Education and experience
Advanced University Degree, preferably a PhD, in Aquatic Environmental Science with relevance to the tropical marine environment; at least ten years professional work experience; demonstrated management competence and capacity to perform well in inter-governmental meetings, and regional meetings of experts and government officials. Diplomatic skills and familiarity with the environmental cultural and economic context of the region are required. Fluency in written and spoken English is required; a knowledge of one or more of the languages of the participating countries an advantage.

Salary within the UN L-5 range minimally starting at US$69,437 (single rate and US 74,743 (dependent rate) but exact starting point depends upon qualifications and experience.
