Are you interested in the development and application of novel analytical techniques at the borderline between physics, surface science and biology? We are looking for a motivated student to join our efforts in the framework of a PhD project.

The research team is interdisciplinary. We combine new approaches of surface bio-functionalization and novel biophysical characterization techniques to investigate fundamental biological questions.
The team is part of the CIC biomaGUNE, a young research center for biomaterials in San Sebastian, which offers excellent working conditions and has been recently equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, including atomic force, confocal, and electron microscopes, a variety of surface-sensitive (QCM-D, SPR, ellipsometry) and spectroscopic (ATR-FTIR, fluorescence) techniques.

The project: Many cells surround themselves with a gel-like and sugar-rich coat. We aim to understand the physical principles that underlie the structure and function of these pericellular coats. The PhD-project will focus on the characterization of the forces inherent to such coats. Modern techniques such as atomic force microscopy (AFM) and microinterferometry (RICM) will be adapted and used to characterize purpose-designed model systems of the pericellular coat. Experimental results will be confronted with polymer theory as well as results on living cells.
The applicant will get intensive training in novel methods of surface functionalization, including artificial lipid membranes, as well as in modern analytical techniques, such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), microinterferometry (RICM), quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) and ellipsometry.

The applicant should have keen interest to work in an international and interdisciplinary research team. A background in physics or related fields and skills in computer programming are required. The working language is English. The project can be started immediately.

Interested? Please send an informal application together with a CV and a transcript of your university record to Ralf Richter (rrichter@cicbiomagune.es).
